This league will only be running for 20 years (maybe 21 to allow for three 7-year rotations so all players get to face each other), and its main purpose is to look at the final career stats of all participants. This part is fun, watching it all unfold. But, as a stats nut, it is that final process of individual performance assessment that truly fascinates me. Can't wait to get there. But still want to savour watching the best of the best go about their business on a daily basis, which is why I decided to report each day. Slow burn = big fire!

Asked about his poor performance, Young said "There aren't any easy outs in this league."

"Apart from the door if you keep pitching like you have been," quipped his manager.

The mix of names is so cool. Ex: Tom Seaver as the winning pitcher over Robin Roberts. Mickey Cochrane and Ichiro Suzuki in the same game.

I'm falling out of love with my main save, which I rarely post about. I think the one to supersede it is going to be a full fictional universe created from scratch using rookies from the entire 20th century, probably starting in 1970 and running until 2030. Maybe with a pro/rel included just to make it interesting. Not anywhere near there yet but am already doing some conceptualising of how I want it to look. Should be a lot of fun.

Game of the Week – Sunday, July 30 1961
Connecticut Colonials (59-49) @ Portland Stags (58-50)
Riverfront Stadium – Portland, OR; 10.05 pm PORT: Jim Palmer (8-11, 4.07) CONN: Sam Rice (12-6, 4.70) Hello and welcome to another Game of the Week, I’m your host Nik Hill, and boy do we have a sweet matchup for you tonight here in charming Portland with the home side taking on the Connecticut Colonials. Both sides have had strong seasons to this point and will be among the contenders for post-season action, with the Stags leading the West Division by 4 ½ games and the Colonials trailing Boston in the North by just a couple. Plenty, in other words, on the line tonight for both sides. The Stags have led the West almost the entire season and for most of that looked like they were going to win it comfortably, but an 11-14 June brought them back within range and now they’ve got a real fight on their hands with the Lizards closing fast. The Colonials have had a similar trajectory, except the Beacons caught and then went straight past them when they cooled off in mid-season, and now it is tooth-and-nail between them and the Beacons, between whom a fierce rivalry has already been fermented and cemented. We’re running a bit behind time tonight so just a quite note about the pitchers on duty tonight. Jim Palmer is up for the hosts, and he has gone 8-11 this season. A bit unlucky, if you ask me as some of his metrics look strong. Only 3.9 run support per game has been a factor and the Stags will need to spot him more than that tonight one would think with Williams and Co in the other dugout. The Colonials’ stater is Sam Rice, 12-6 with an ERA of 4.70, and just by way of comparison his Connecticut hitters have given him a full run per game more than his opponent. As always, our reporter Juliana Scott is down in the field and tonight she’s got the man piloting the home side in this inaugural season. Jules, over to you. Juliana Scott: Yes Nik, I’m in the Stags dugout with Manager Walter Alston. Hi Walter, big game tonight hey? Walter Alston: Hello Jules, yes they’re all pretty big from here on in. JS: A great start to the year and as Nik said you looked ready to run away with your division. But you’ve come back to the pack now – how do you settle these young rookies down and get them focused on the task at hand when the pressure amps up like this? WA: Yes, there’s a fine line between too much and too little emphasis on what’s happening. Obviously you want their heads in the game but you don’t want to overplay your hand. That’s when they start getting inside their own heads. So it is a real tightrope walk with no safety net (laughs)! JS: It’s strange – when you look at your stats you’re not really dominant in any one category, just nice and even across the board. Is that something you’ve strived for or has it just panned out that way? WA: Perhaps a bit of both, I mean we don’t want to be too reliant on any one facet of our game in case it dries up, so we’ve certainly been working hard at being well-rounded. But you also have to go with each player’s strengths as well, so it gets taken out of your hands a bit. Most of the time you think you’re controlling the game, the game is actually controlling you. JS: Young Fernando Valenzuela has been a real find for your club. Not just on the field, where he’s done well, but I don’t know that there are too many more popular players in the league right now. WA: Yeah, that’s for sure. But he’s a lovely kid, very down to earth and it just doesn’t seem to bother him too much. He just goes out there and does his thing. The key with Fernando is he learns so much with every game he plays, perhaps more than any player I’ve ever managed before. So you’d think that will hold him in good stead over the long haul. JS: Some big bats to be kept quiet tonight, Williams in particular, but also Larkin has been excellent. How do you approach these types of players? WA: If first base is open then that’s an easy decision (laughs)... Otherwise we’ve scouted them and have ideas on how best to pitch to them, same as all players. You just fail at it more often with the good ones (laughs). JS: Well here’s hoping you don’t fail tonight or for the rest of the season, Walter, thanks so much for taking with us. WA: Anytime – thanks a lot. JS: Quiet confidence exuding from Walter's every pore, Nik. Really looking forward to this one. As am I, Jules, and we’ll be back with all the action after this break. ![]() TOP 1ST The Colonials waste no time, as Freeman doubles and eventually scores on a wild pitch. Connecticut 1, Portland 0 BOTTOM 1ST Connor triples with two out but Mantle can’t bring him in, flying out harmlessly to CF to end the inning. TOP 2ND A leadoff double by Larkin is erased when Kendall GIDPs and the Stags get out of the inning without conceding. BOTTOM 2ND The Stags go down in order. ![]() TOP 3RD Freeman is in the middle of things again when Glasscock singles to keep the inning alive and he bombs one out to stretch the Colonials’ advantage. That’s his 15th longball of the season. Connecticut 3, Portland 0 BOTTOM 3RD Another 1-2-3 inning for Rice, who has started confidently. TOP 4TH Just a single to Larkin. BOTTOM 4TH The Stags rally with two out as Mantle and Campaneris single to put men at the points, but Bell grounds out to end the inning. TOP 5TH Palmer gets his first clean inning of the game. BOTTOM 5TH Another easy frame for Rice. TOP 6TH A two-out Crawford single goes nowhere. BOTTOM 6TH The Stags get just their fourth hit of the game, a single to Magee, but it leads to nothing. ![]() TOP 7TH Three up, three down. BOTTOM 7TH Another two-out rally for Portland comes up short with Hornsby flying out to right with men at first and third to close it down. TOP 8TH The Colonials look to have gone further ahead when Crawford singles with men on first and second, but an excellent throw by Bell mows down Freedman at the plate to prevent the run and end the inning. BOTTOM 8TH The Stags get a break when Evans throws one into the dugout, but can’t cash in and this one look lost. TOP 9TH Mordecai Brown comes in to relieve Palmer and he allows just the hit in a scoreless frame. BOTTOM 9TH Maybe too little too late as Cool Papa Bell cracks a one-out solo shot to bust up the shutout. A Molitor single ends Rice’s night as Eddie Cicotte is called upon to finish it off. He gets the second out but a McPhee error on what should have been a game-ender keeps the inning alive for Sherry Magee, who suddenly represents the winning run. But Cicotte gets him to ground out to short and the Colonials get it done. Connecticut 3, Portland 1 (final). WP: Sam Rice (13-6) LP: Jim Palmer (8-12) POTG: Sam Rice 8.1 IP / 8 H / 1 ER / 4 K. Well the Stags bats failed to support Jim Palmer yet again, and that early Freeman homer proves the telling blow in a game controlled for the most part by the pitchers. Rice was excellent and the Colonials continue on their merry way with the win. Just one more broadcast from us I’m afraid, and we’re not sure as yet when it will be, somewhere near the end of the season in a key game is the plan so keep an eye on your TV Guide for details. Until then, thanks for watching and goodnight.
