Walkers news: August 30 -- Milwaukee 4, St. Louis 3

Tied 1-1, Milwaukee scored three times against the St. Louis bullpen in the bottom of the seventh inning and went on for a 4-3 win at Miller Park. The River Walkers had tied the game in the top of the seventh on Mark Herman's lead-off homer off Crushers relief pitcher Antony Barrowcliff. Milwaukee then ripped the St. Louis bullpen for three runs in the bottom half, all of the scoring coming with two outs. Jose Flores got things going with a one-out single off reliever Kyle Smarr. Jim Carr then reached on a fielder's choice for the second out. A single by Mike Lamoureux put runners on first and third and brought Chris Willett into the game. He wasn't good. Andy Burhoe greeted Willett with a two-run double making it 3-1. Willett then issued back-to-back walks to Danny Gutierrez and Arnold Hammond to load the bases. Steve Ricca made it three free passes in a row, as Burhoe scored to make it 4-1. The Walkers did score twice in the top of the eighth against Tony Lujano. But that was the end of their offensive output. Crushers starting pitcher Matt Wailzer handled the first four innings, not allowing a run. He struck out three and walked one. After that four relievers, Caleb Walker (1.2 IP), Barrowcliff (1.1), Lujano (1.0) and David Arara (1.0), combined to close out the game for Milwaukee. Barrowcliff (2-2) earned his second win, and his fourth blown save. Araya improved his save total to 29. |

Milwaukee built itself a 4-0 lead over the first four innings and never trailed as the Crushers downed St. Louis 9-7 at Miller Park. The win was the second in a row for Milwaukee to complete the three-game series. Much of the damage came against River Walkers starting pitcher Agustin Perdomo, who gave up seven runs on 12 hits over just 5.2 innings. The Crushers scored single runs in the first and second innings and than two in the fourth to go up 4-0. St. Louis got back into it with a pair of runs off fifth, but the Crushers tallied three times in the sixth -- Andy Burhoe with a two-run single off Alex Rios, who walked in the inning's third run -- to push their lead back to 7-2. A three-run top of the seventh by St. Louis -- Manuel Coke led off with his 40th homer of the season off Caleb Walker -- made it a game again at 7-5. An inning later, Coke connected on an RBI double off Curt Donaldson to make it 7-6. But Milwaukee tallied twice in the bottom of the eighth -- Steve Ricca drove in both runs with a single off Brett McVey -- to put the Crushers in front 9-6. St. Louis did get a run in the ninth -- Gabriel Hagan with a pinch-hit RBI single off Dave Araya -- but Milwaukee still came out with the win. The Crushers had 17 hits in the game. Burhoe was 3 for 5 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Gutierrez was 3 for 3 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBIs. Ricca was 2 for 5 with a double, a run scored and two RBIs. Jose Flores was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. Crushers starting pitching Pablo Maldonado lasted 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out six and walked five. Miles Kipp finished the fifth inning and worked a scoreless sixth. Kipp (3-3) would earn his third win of the season. Walker (0.2 IP) and Chris Faidley (0.1) combined on the seventh when the Walkers scored three runs. Curt Donaldson allowed a run in the eighth. Araya earned his 30th save despite giving up a run. |

Player of the Month: Manuel Coke -- The 26-year-old outfielder batted .369 with 12 homers, 27 RBIs and 26 runs scored in 29 games. He got on base at a .412 clip and slugged .766.
Starting Pitcher of the Month: Kevin Hrdlicka -- The 27-year-old right-hander went 3-0 in five starts with a 2.73 ERA. He pitched a total of 29.2 innings, during which he struck 36 and had a 1.01 WHIP. Mark Herman connected on a two-out single off Grand Rapids reliever Gabe Hayes in the bottom of the 11th inning to score Tony Urbalejo with the game-winning run as St. Louis defeated the Traders 3-2 at Busch Stadium (2006). The River Walkers' Nick Shaw had led off the inning with a single. He was replaced by Urbalejo, who stole second and third. With two outs, Herman then lined a shot into left field to bring him home with the winning run. The game had been tied since the top of the seventh when Grand Rapids tied it. Zach Simon singled with one out off River Walkers starter Kevin Hrdlicka. A single by pinch-hitter John Del Gaudio off reliever Chris Willett moved him to third. A wild pitch scored Simon to even it at 2-2. Hrdlicka worked 6.1 innings, allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out seven and walked one. A parade of five relievers combined to finish the game for St. Louis. Willett got just one out in the seventh and McVey came on to finish the seventh and record the first out of the eighth. Leo Hermosillo got the Walkers out of the eighth without allowing a run. Closer Craig Fritzler pitched two scoreless innings. Carlos Hernandez (1-0) worked the 11th to set himself up to earn the win. |

Down 1-0, Grand Rapids jumped on St. Louis starting pitcher Xavier Wigfall for five runs in the top of the sixth inning and the Traders went on to defeat the River Walkers 6-3 at Busch Stadium (2006). Josh Shuler set the tone for the outburst when he led off the inning with his 15th home runs of the season. The Traders kept going from there as Jake Klingenstein drew a walk followed by a single from Edwin Palos. Zach Simon then got down a bunt, moving the runners to second and third. That also chased Wigfall from the game. Ron Cox took over the Walkers. He gave up back-to-back RBI singles to pinch-hitter Sal Rendon and Ricarda Santillan, before pitcher Victor de Leon got down a bunt to put runners at second and third with two outs. Alex Rios then got the ball for St. Louis. Bruce Herrera greeted him with a triple on a 3-2 pitch to make it 5-1. The Walkers did draw within 5-3 with a pair of runs in the seventh off the Grand Rapids bullpen. The Traders got one of those runs back in the eighth when John Del Gaudio connected on a pinch-hit double off Carlos Hernandez. Del Gaudio scored on a Herrera single. de Leon (13-7) earned his 13th win by going 6.2 innings, during which he allowed two runs on seven hits. He stuck out four and didn't issue a walk. Carlos Sanchez finished the seventh for the Traders. Fernando Maldonado and Josh Hertel wrapped up the game with scoreless innings. Hertel notched his second save. |

Scoreless through five innings, Grand Rapids tallied twice against St. Louis rookie starting pitcher Juan Farias in the top of the sixth inning and the Traders went on for a 3-1 win at Busch Stadium (2006). Norman Mackey got things going for Grand Rapids with a one-out single off Farias. The rest of the damage came with two outs. Jake Klingenstein pushed Mackey across the plate with a double. Edwin Palos then made it 2-0 with a single. The Walkers got their lone run in the bottom of the sixth. Nolan Gorman drew a one-out walk from Traders starting pitcher Mark McDougall. He scored when R.J. Gomez followed with a double. Grand Rapids reclaimed its two-run lead in the top of the seventh against the St. Louis bullpen. Back-to-back errors to open the inning -- first by first baseman Nick Shaw and the second by second baseman Tom Porter -- put two on board for the Traders. Mackey later scored Chris Jensen with a two-out single off Alex Rios. MacDougall (10-6) went 5.1 innings, he gave up one run on six hits. He struck out nine and walked three. Matt Ray finished the sixth for Grand Rapids. Josh Hertel and Fernando Maldonado worked the seventh and eighth, respectively. Closer Mike Webb opened ninth but gave way to Chris Patton after allowing a single to Mark Herman and a walk to Manuel Coke. Patton struck out Nick Shaw to end it and earn his second save. The Walkers struck out 13 times. |

St. Louis starting pitcher Ming Xiang gave up a two-run home run to Grand Rapids in the fourth inning and to Edwin Palos in the seventh to power the Traders to a 4-2 win at Busch Stadium (2006). The win was the third straight for Grand Rapids to close the four-game series. A scoreless game, the Traders' Bruce Herrera led off the top of the fourth with a double. Shuler followed with his 16th home run of the season. The River Walkers tied it with single runs off Grand Rapids starter in the fourth and fifth. It didn't stay tied for long. Jake Klingenstein doubled off Xiang with one out. Palos then powered a 1-0 pitch 399 feet over the wall in right field for his 26th homer of the season a 4-2 Grand Rapids' lead. Traders starting pitcher Rafael Pina went 5.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked three. Gabe Hayes finished the fifth for Grand Rapids. After that, it was shutout out innings from Carlos Sanchez, Matt Ray and Mike Webb to close the game. Webb earned his 37th save. |

Manuel Coke led off the bottom of the 12th inning with his `42nd home run of the season to give St. Louis a 5-4 win over Green Bay at Busch Stadium (2006). The homer came on a 1-1 pitch from Mallards reliever Chris Chrzan. When it landed in the bleachers in right-center field it had travelled 398 feet. Green Bay had taken a 4-2 lead in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by pinch-hitter Alberto Landaverde off River Walkers reliever Victor Rosiles. St. Louis tied it in the bottom of the inning when Daniel Lopez hit a two-run homer off Frank Friluli. Lopez had just been called up from AAA Memphis and was playing in the majors for the first time in over a year. St. Louis starting pitcher Agustin Perdomo lasted 4.1 innings. allowing two runs on four hits, before exiting the game with an undisclosed injury. He struck out two and walked two. Rookie Allen Almon made his major league debut and got the second out of the fifth before exiting after issuing a walk. Rosiles finished the fifth, worked the sixth, giving up the two-run homer to Landaverde, recorded the first two outs of the seventh. Frank Jimenez got the final out of the seventh. After that, it was Alex Rios with a scoreless innings and closer Craig Fritzler and Carlos Hernandez both with two scoreless innings. Hernandez (4-0) netted the win. |

Walkers news: Sept. 6 -- Elbow injury ends Perdomo's season; Cisneros recalled from AAA Memphis
The St. Louis River Walkers have placed starting pitcher Agustin Perdomo on the 60-day injured list after he left their 5-4 win over Green Bay in the fourth inning with an injury.
After the game, Perdomo was diagnosed to have bone chips in his throwing arm and was placed on the 60-day injured list. Perdomo is not expected to be able to throw for six months. Signed in the offseason as a free agent, Perdomo had gone 8-9 with a 3.51 ERA in 28 games/27 starts in his first season in St. Louis. The 31-year-old right-hander pitched a total 166.0 innings, during which he struck out 93 and had a 1.35 WHIP. He will be replaced in the rotation by right-hander Miguel Cisneros who is coming off a back injury which has had him out since late June. In 15 starts this season, Cisneros has gone 5-6 with a 3.51 ERA. He pitched a total of 89.1 innings, during which he struck out 58 and had a 1.19 WHIP. |

Green Bay's Alberto Landaverde hit a three-run homer off St. Louis starting pitcher Kevin Hrdlicka in the top of the third inning, snapping a 1-1 tie and powering the Mallards to a 6-1 win at Busch Stadium (2006). Jordan Lawlar opened the inning with a single and when Devon Reyna walked there were two runners on bases for Landaverda. He took a strike, but on the second pitch from Hrdlicka he unloaded smashing it 361 feet over the right-field wall for his 27th homer of the season and a 4-1 lead. With Hrdlicka still on the mound, the Mallards added their final two runs in the sixth. Hrdlicka retired the first two batters but then gave up three straight singles to Victor Solano, Jackson Miller and pitcher Matt Loest. Loest's single drove in Solano. He stayed in to face Jordan Lawlar, he doubled scoring Miller to make it 6-1. Loest (10-6) worked 5.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits. He struck out one and walked one. Jason Pappas finished the sixth and worked a scoreless seventh. Chris Chrzan handled the eighth and got the first out of the ninth. The final two outs went to Alex Duarte. |

Manuel Coke hit a two-run home run off Green Bay reliever Matt Rodriguez in the bottom of the eighth inning, snapping a 2-2 tie, and lifting St. Louis to a 4-2 win at Busch Stadium. Joe Allen had drawn a one-out walk in front of Coke. Coke then smacked a 2-2 pitch 410 feet over the left-center field wall for his second homer of the game and his 42nd of the season. The 2038 NL MVP had also hit a solo shot off Green Bay starter Erentso Tello in the sixth to make the score 2-0 St. Louis. The Mallards tied it with two runs in the top of the eighth against St. Louis starter Xavier Wigfall. Wigfall hit Brady House to open the inning and then walked Sal Valdez. Brett McVey replaced Wigfall and got a strike out of Savion McMullan. But pinch-hitter Victor Solano connected on a double to tie the game. Despite not getting a decision Wigfall pitched as well as he has in a while, he worked seven innings allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out six and walked one. McVey (5-1) got the win after Coke's homer put St. Louis in front in the bottom of the inning. Craig Fritzler gave up two hits but no runs in the ninth for his 21st save. |

Trailing 2-1, St. Louis scored three times in the top of the seventh inning and went on to defeat Dayton 5-2 at Camden Yards (1992). Mike Vaughan got the River Walkers rolling with a one-out walk from Pilot starting pitcher Rob Reed. Reed then exited the game after allowing two runs on three hits over 6.1 innings. He also had struck out nine and thrown 106 pitches. Luis G. Helton took over for Reed and proceeded to walk the next two batters to load the bases. There would be a combined 12 walks in the game, six by both teams. Pinch-hitter Mark Herman then put St. Louis in front with a two-run single. Daniel Lopez followed with another single, making it 4-2. The Walkers added insurance run in the eighth, an inning where Dayton reliever Elvis Pool walked two batters, Nolan Gorman driving it in with a two-out single. Walkers starting pitcher, rookie Juan Farias, went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. He struck out five and walked four. Victor Roisles (1-1) struck out the only batter he faced yet earned the win. Chris Willett worked a scoreless seventh. Leo Hermosillo (0.2 IP) started the eighth. Alex Rios (0.1) finished it. Craig Fritzler posted his 22nd save. |
