August 1961 Recap
North Division
Boston’s slide continued apace in August with a 10-18 sectional, and they now find themselves playing catch-up on the other two, as Connecticut and New Jersey both post 16-win months. All three teams still have a bunch of games against each other, so this one looks set to be a cliffhanger, with the Boston-Connecticut series to close out the regular season already looming large. West Division After an early wobble, Portland rallied strongly to go 19-9 for the month. However, the Lizards racked up 20 wins over the same period and once again this is set to be a dogfight to the wire. No real scheduling advantages for either side, and they meet mid-month for their last three contests of the season in what should be a doozie. South Division Won and done, the Firebirds are home. East Division The Arrows have just dropped off the pace a bit, but at only 8 GB aren’t done for yet. The streaky way all four of these sides have played all year means just about anything is possible. I still think Washington will prevail, but I wouldn’t even put someone else’s money on it.
