Sorry for opening this can of worms for you (rust vs rehab time).

Even though it probably causes some headaches for you to share some information sometimes I think it is needed. The players need to understand the mechanincs of the game (but not necessarily the exact formulas).

A question about rehab time...

In real life, does it use up a minor league option year if you send a player to the minors after an injury to get him back to playing shape?

No, time spent with a minor league club on a rehabilitation assignment does not count towards options. It does count as Major League service (since the player is, during the rehab assignment, still on the DL).

Thanks. Then it would seem like a reasonable option to have when a player gets back from an injury. Can a major league player refuse to go down to the minors?

A rehab assignment is not technically a minor league assignment, so no.

This is an interesting discussion. I am a bit surprised that, according to Markus, rust only takes place at spring training and after a long injury, and not throughout the season.

Before now I was never sure if rust existed in the game. Or maybe I knew about it and forgot. I have noticed the greater incidence of injuries during spring training.

In my OOTP play I try to mimic big-league team management, so I will sometimes 'give a guy the day off' and let another quality player take his place, on the assumption that the latter needs to get in some playing time. I also try to get each reliever some work every few days, rather than relying on just my aces.

Based on the performance of my closer this past season, I would have sworn there is in-season rust. In the 2 games he pitched after sitting more than a week he gave up 7 runs in 2 innings. The rest of the season he never went more than 3 days without pitching and he allowed just 1 run in 36 innings. If there isn't rust involved, I don't know how to explain it.

Yeah, but how much Spring Training action is needed to "knock off' the off-season rust? And if a player does not get that amount of Spring Training action, does the rust stay on all season long?

The manual's word that players should "get at least some" playing time in ST is absolutely no help whatsoever.

Does that mean 10 at bats, 20, 30, 50 IP?

5 IP? 10, 20 IP?

Or is it a function of games appeared in ST?

Rust

Each player in OOTP has a certain amount of 'rust' after an offseason. For each at-bat or inning pitched during Spring Training, a player shakes off some of that rust. Therefore, it is important to make sure all your key players get at least some playing time during Spring Training, because rusty players won't perform well.

This is NOT official, just what I do.

For starting pitchers, 20 innings, in groups of 2 and 3.
For relief pitchers, 12 innings, in single inning chunks.
For position players, 96-120 innings, in groups of 4 or 5 innings.
