Second crash in last three games. This one a little different than the others, the timing was a bit different. Other crashes sound would cut out and there'd be a click, sound would come back, an instant later screen goes black and reboot begins. This one was the same but after the click the sound came back but the game stayed on the screen for 4-5 seconds. I thought it was going to come out of it but after the longer delay, same old crash.

here's the trace...

Just had another crash to reboot. Did not have time to play yesterday so this is a crash on the same game, though I don't think that has anything to do with it. Too many other random crashes for this one game to be a cause. Aug 5th loaded in Fast Springs, tonight in Steam. Aug 5 crashed in 8th inning, tonight before the first pitch could be thrown. Maybe with the shorter trace file and no action having taken place it will narrow it down?

edit to add: Forgot to say, I still have only had this issue while playing OOTP. Before I noted I'd played Rome Total War 2 and Panzer Corps 2 without issue. FWIW, today before playing OOTP I played "F1 2018" for a couple of hours without issue.

Thanks.

Thanks for the update. Just to let you know, I'm on vacation for a couple weeks and Matt's on vacation for a week or so, so it'll probably be a bit before we have a chance to check into this any more for you.

Ok went from Aug 7 'til today the 17th without a crash. Probably somewhere around 25 games between my historical Steam game and my on-going Cubs game in Fast Springs. Crash today was Fast Springs.

Windows beep, black screen, silent for a moment, game sound comes back for a few seconds, then goes to reboot. Late in the game, 8th inning or so, but this time during a play. I think(?), sometimes it happens so fast, but I believe the runner was still in motion. Before it has always come between plays.

Don't know if we'll ever find the cause but at least I'm able to play for stretches of time.

Just had another one. I'm thinking I'm going to have to live with this and hope v22 doesn't do it. I had one on Saturday I didn't report as I screwed up and lost the trace file when I restarted OOTP. On this occasion I was monitoring the cpu, gpu, and system temps as the 3d game played out. Nothing unusual with those.

Today's crash was a fast one. Made one change in my lineup during the "game preview". Hit start game, heard ambient, sounds, saw the field, heard the beep, followed by black screen (still with sound), on to reboot. No "action" had taken place and the speech to text had not yet started the game introduction.

And the trace file..

I don't see anything directly. At this point, I would suggest the main things to try would be to ramp down the 3D settings and see if you can get to a point that it stops happening.

If you go to the setting menu on the entry screen, and go to the 3D tab, I'd suggest turn down all the various settings. So probably most of all, make sure the framerate is capped in the 30-60fps zone, and you can try turn down stuff like the audience detail and animations, and see if anything there helps this out. The nature of 3D games means that it can spike quickly if a play suddenly decides to chew everything up, so it's not necessarily that things will slowly grow until it topples over.

Wish I could be of more help, but that's all I can see for now.

I appreciate your help Matt and understand you can't always have an answer for every system out here. I'll keep tinkering with settings and see what happens. Thanks for looking over the trace file and your thoughts, much appreciated.

Well try as I might I can no longer play OOTP. Made it through playoffs of my last season by quitting after every 4th inning and then resuming the game so as not to lose any progress. Most times this worked.

Now in spring training and made it through 8 games with the quit continue tactic. Even with that I've only completed 2 games start to finish. Most times it crashed and it took one or two more tries to get through 9.

Today I loaded up, crossed my fingers and it now crashes every time. First game, once on the 3d screen, crashed before I could even hit enter to play the first AB. Occurred to me that I'd never tried windowed mode. Tried that and crashed again after two batters. Went back to full screen and tried again. Got to 3 1/3 innings and crashed to reboot again. One last go and didn't make it through the first inning. Time to give up

OOTP is the only application that crashes on my machine. NBA2k, the new 2k golf, F1, the new Panzer Corp, DDS Pro Basketball, FM games all run fine along with all other apps like Paint Shop Pro etc. I'd trade any of those crashing all of the time to have OOTP.

My only hope is v22 going 64 bit somehow magically fixes it but... I'm not hopeful. Been playing the same dynasty since 2002, this is heartbreaking. I love my OOTP world.

Just needed to put some closer on this thread and start the wait for spring and v22 I guess.

Do you have integrated graphics in your system as well as a dedicated graphics card?

I wonder what would happen if you switched to using the integrated graphics and tried playing out a game with those, even just for troubleshooting purposes? Because for sure this seems like a graphics/3d related issue that I do not think will be likely to change with the 64 bit version.

Thanks Lukas for your thoughts. Unfortunately there is only the graphics card. Yeah, kind of grasping at straws hoping next years 64 bit version would make a difference.

While I considered the card, with all other apps running without issue I was thinking that wasn't it, but worth the time to investigate. When I get time I may pull the card out of my old computer, put it in the new one, and see what happens. With new gen cards out and the holidays it could be awhile before I can even get a replacement. Hopefully the old card fixes it and keeps me running for awhile until cards become available at realistic prices again.

Thanks again for your input.

Update to this thread,

My new computer finally crashed to reboot using another app. It also crashed once while using Chrome with a video editor software running. Since this finally eliminated OOTP as the only cause I contacted the manufacturer and my computer is currently in their repair center. Unfortunately that is in Texas so who knows when it will come back.

I know compared to the suffering there it is really a non-issue. Let those poor souls get their lives back to normal, I can wait. I only state it so it's understood a final "it's fixed" from me may not come for awhile. If the weather hadn't gone to hell I would have expected it back by now and this would have been a final post.

I do want to thank everyone at OOTP that went to great lengths trying to find out what was going on. I can imagine in their minds they were thinking it wasn't an OOTP issue but, even then, they continued to work with me and went above and beyond in doing so.

For now I've moved my game back to my old pc and continue on.

Thanks again everyone
