BOSTON DESTROYS JOSS, FIREBIRDS FOR GAME 1 WIN

Boston 13 @ Atlanta 6
A wild old start to this series as the Beacons rack up 22 hits – half of them for extra bases – and demolish the heavily-favoured home side. 7 in the 2nd for Boston chases Joss and puts them in the box seat early, and they don’t let up from there. Clarke leads the way as usual, while Vaughn has 4 RBI.

WP: Felix Hernandez (1-1)
LP: Addie Joss (1-2)
  • BOST: Fred Clarke 4-6 / 2 RBI; Arky Vaughn 2B / 3B / 4 RBI; Yogi Berra 2-3 / 3B / 3 RBI; Bobby Doerr, Ed Delahanty 3-6 / 2 2B / RBI.
  • ATLA: Robin Yount, Scott Rolen 2-3 / 3B / RBI.

FIREBIRDS BOUNCE BACK TO LEVEL SERIES WITH COMFORTABLE WIN

Atlanta 7 v Boston 2
A much-improved performance in all regards sees Atlanta even the Series at 1 with a controlled and clinical victory. Ward gives them 7+ and leaves with the game well in hand, while Pee Wee Reese leads the offence with 3 hits and 3 ribbies.

WP: John Montgomery Ward (1-1)
LP: Doc White (1-1)
  • ATLA: Pee Wee Reese 3-4 / 2B / 3B / 3 RBI; Harry Heilmann 3-4 / 2B / RBI; Joe Mauer 3-4 / RBI.

BEACONS HANG ON FOR CLOSE WIN IN SEE-SAWING AFFAIR

Boston 7 @ Atlanta 6
Boston heads back to Beantown with a decisive advantage after going head-to-head in an engrossing Game 3 and finally coming out on top. The momentum shifts a number of times throughout the game before the Beacons go ahead late and close it out by the barest margin. Reese does all he can, but Vaughn is again the decisive factor and the Beacons give themselves an excellent chance to close this out in front of their home fans.

WP: Bob Friend (3-0)
LP: John Clarkson (1-1)
SV: Bert Blyleven (3)
  • BOST: Arky Vaughn 2-4 / 3B / 3 RBI; Stan Hack 3-5 / RBI; Graig Nettles 2 RBI.
  • ATLA: Pee Wee Reese 2B / HR [1] / 2 RBI; Jose Cruz 2-4 / 2-run HR [1]; Cap Anson 3-5 / 2B / RBI; Billy Hamilton 2-5 / 3B / RBI.

ALL TIED UP AGAIN AS FIREBIRDS WIN ON ROAD

Atlanta 7 @ Boston 4
Atlanta squares the series with a controlled win as Billy Hamilton has 4 hits, Robin Yount goes 3-for-5 with 2 RBI, and Joe Mauer knocks in 3. The Firebirds take an early lead with 3 in the 3rd and never really look in danger after that, despite starter Tim Hudson being far from at his sharpest.

WP: Tim Hudson (2-0)
LP: George Mullin (1-1)
SV: John Clarkson (4)
  • ATLA: Billy Hamilton 4-5 / 2B; Robin Yount 3-5 / 2 RBI; Joe Mauer 3 RBI.
  • BOST: Stan Hack 2 RBI; Yogi Berra 2-4 / RBI.

BEACONS WIN EPIC GAME 5 TO GET THEIR NOSES IN FRONT AGAIN

Boston 9 v Atlanta 6
In a game that could have gone either way, the home side finally prevails to take a 3-2 series lead. The bats ran hot from the get-go, with the teams swapping 3-spots early and the middle innings were even wilder, with the Firebirds responding to Boston’s 4-run barrage in the 5th with 3 of their own in the next half-inning. But the hosts creep away again with runs in the bottom 6th and then again in the 8th to finally put the Firebirds away. Arky Vaughn is huge as Boston keeps the possibility of a home clinch alive.

WP: Felix Hernandez (2-1)
LP: Addie Joss (1-3)
SV: Bert Blyleven (4)
  • BOST: Arky Vaughn 2B / 3B / 4 RBI; Joe Tinker 2-4 / 2 RBI; Stan Hack 2-4 / 2B.
  • ATLA: Scott Rolen 3-run HR [1]; Pee Wee Reese 2-run 3B.

ATLANTA BATS COME THROUGH WHEN NEEDED AS SERIES GOES TO 3-3

Atlanta 9 @ Boston 4
A 7-run 3rd inning by Atlanta ends this contest almost before it has begun and only a late flurry by the home side makes it even remotely respectable. Boston starter Doc White is shelled hard as Hank Aaron stars for the Firebirds, who guarantee themselves at least one more home game in the Series.

WP: John Montgomery Ward (2-1)
LP: Doc White (2-2)
SV: John Clarkson (5)
  • ATLA: Hank Aaron 4-5 / 2 2B / 3 RBI; Cap Anson 2-run 2B; Scott Rolen 2 RBI.
  • BOST: Ed Delahanty 2-4 / 2B.

BEACONS CLIP FIREBIRDS TO GET WITHIN ONE OF WINNING IT ALL

Boston 4 v Atlanta 3
This titanic series takes another turn as the Beacons just hang on for a one-run win behind a strong pitching effort by Bob Friend. The hosts look in control at 4-1 up after 4, but Atlanta keeps coming at them with singles in the 5th and 8th, before Bert Blyleven pitches them to victory with a six-out save.

WP: Bob Friend (4-0) 7 IP / 8 H / 2 ER / 2 K.
LP: Luis Tiant (1-2)
SV: Bert Blyleven (5)
  • BOST: Ed Delahanty 2-4 / RBI.
  • ATLA: Cap Anson 2-4 / solo HR [1]; Billy Hamilton solo HR [1]; Robin Yount 3-3 / 2B.

FIREBIRDS TAKE SERIES TO A DECISIVE GAME 9

Atlanta 15 v Boston 5
Don’t let the lopsided scoreline fool you, the result of this game is in doubt for a long time as both offences get busy early before the pitchers finally rein them in during the middle innings with the home side ahead 9-5. A crooked number in the 8th finally settles things with a 3-run homer by Jose Cruz the big blow. Every one of Atlanta’s lineup has at least one hit with Pee Wee Reese the only one without an RBI in a consummate team performance.

WP: Lefty Grove (1-0)
LP: George Mullin (1-2)
  • ATLA: Jose Cruz 3-5 / HR [3] / 4 RBI; Harry Heilmann 3 2B / 2 RBI; Scott Rolen 2-5 / HR [2] / 2 RBI; Robin Yount 2 2B / 2 RBI.
  • BOST: Bobby Doerr 3-4 / HR [2] / 2 RBI; Ed Delahanty 3-5 / 2B / RBI.

BOSTON TAKES ABSOLUTE CLASSIC IN EXTRAS TO WIN IT ALL

Boston 6 @ Atlanta 5 (13 innings)
Oh. My. Dear. Lord. A fitting way to close out an engrossing series with an epic game that has to be seen to be believed.

The Firebirds jump out to an early 4-1 lead after a 3-run homer by Rolen, but they just can’t put the Beacons away and it ends up biting them on the keister. A pair of RBI doubles to Stan Hack in the 6th and 8th set up a grandstand finish that ends up taking 5 more innings to play out when Fred Clarke doubles in the tying run with one out in the 9th. The teams swap runs in the 12th and, when Boston again takes the lead with one in the top 13th, this time the Firebirds have no answer and Ned Garver closes it out for the Beacons.

Absolutely amazing.

WP: Ned Garver (1-0)
LP: Eddie Rommel (0-1)
  • BOST: Fred Clarke 3-7 / 2B / 2 RBI; Stan Hack 2 2B / 2 RBI; Ed Delahanty 3-5 / 2B / RBI.
  • ATLA: Scott Rolen 2-7 / 3-run HR [3]; Billy Hamilton 3-4 / 2B; Joe Mauer 3-6 / 2B / RBI; Harry Heilmann 3-7 / 2B.

BOSTON WINS SERIES 5-4
SERIES MVP: ED DELAHANTY (BOSTON)

A short break

After I post the awards news, there'll be a wee hiatus as I have decided to add 16 more NeL players, 1 to each team in a Draft as early as it can be scheduled next year with the 1961 standings being the arbiter of who picks when.

Should only be a week or two.

Thanks for following along, hope you're enjoying things - can't guarantee I'm going to be able to top this first season but that won't stop me from trying over the remaining 20!
