Week 9

When it rains it pours! A Morton salt week for this team going a perfect 0-7.Including one game where behind Mudcat Grants strong 7 innings and Ike Delock's 1 inning of shut out ball in relief the Arrows carried a 7-1 lead into the top of the 9th only to have the levee Break and the Cincinnati Redlegs score 11 runs to win 12-7. We are now an astoundingly terrible 4-17 in the month of June. I love expansion teams!

Season Finished

Hello all, the 1958 Season is finished. Seems I didn't set the roster expansion and Trade deadline dates and they both happened on June 26th! SO I just simmed out the season, we lost 111 games and thank goodness for the Memphis expansion team we weren't the worst in the league!

NL Batting Title Belongs to Kuenn
Monday, October 6th, 1958
Batting titles are tough to come by. It takes a lot of talent, hard work, consistency, few slumps, good health and a little luck. Harvey Kuenn of the Cincinnati Redlegs put it all together this year and led the NL with a .331 batting average (196-593). The Redlegs third baseman played in 148 games, ending the season with 26 doubles, 10 triples, 9 home runs, 87 runs and 77 RBI. "When you work hard, good things happen," Kuenn explained to reporters after winning the coveted award. "Slumps happen to everyone, but you won't break out of one without hard work. I think that's one of the prime reasons for my success this season."
White Crowned AL Bat King
Monday, October 6th, 1958
1958 was a banner season for Bill D White of the Detroit Tigers. The 24-year-old first baseman had the highest batting average in the AL with a .351 average. White notched 165 hits in 470 at-bats to take the crown. He also hit 25 home runs, drove in 85 runs and scored 83 times, while playing in 113 games.

1958 Draft

Archers select McCovey

Memphis selection of Bob Gibson 1st overall left Indy no choice but to select Willie McCovey a pick that almost guarantees Orlando Cepeda will be in LF next year provided the Archers can get Willie signed!

Archers make a deal to acquire Gil Hodges, Joe Adcock became available with the drafting of McCovey and Moving of Cepeda to LF. Adcock won't be happy sitting the bench and only plays LF/1B...Hodges can play C/1B/3B/LF/RF and should get his share of PT in most of those places especially 3B and RF.

Archers go out on a limb in a deal for a little used 24 year old named Roberto Clemente. Trading Promising Rookie Pitcher Ted Bowsfield and 26 yr old Bud Black for an under developed 4th year Clemente.

Indy Brass are hoping Clemente develops more as a hitter , his fielding alone will get him a starting role on the Archers in RF.

No place for the Archers to go but up! McCovey will hopefully give you another power bat in the lineup! After 43 wins, will be interesting to see what your owner's expectations are for this season!

7-4 April, Hopes are High in Indy!

After starting 0-3 things looked bleak in Indy, but a strong finish and a 7-4 April, including 2 consecutive Shutout's by Lou Brissie have Indy fans clamoring that they are ready for the Big Time!

Are Gamblers Ready for Big Free Agent Splash?
Thursday, April 30th, 1959
Don Bessent told a small gathering of reporters this afternoon that the fans in Reno "really get behind you" and would be "a pleasure to play for."

Trouble is, Bessent hasn't got a deal with Reno yet, leading to speculation that the 28-year-old could end up in a new home next year.
Brissie Pitches Shutout
Wednesday, April 29th, 1959
It was a long day at the plate for the San Francisco Giants. They never did figure out Lou Brissie and were shut out 3-0. The Indiananapolis hurler baffled them the entire game, yielding no runs and 4 hits in a very well-pitched outing. Brissie also totaled 1 strikeout and 1 walk in the game.
Latest Injury News for Mays
Tuesday, April 28th, 1959
The medical report is in: the injury that has kept San Francisco center fielder Willie Mays out of action since 04/26/1959 will sideline him for another 6 weeks. The 27-year-old Mays, who has a bone spur in his elbow, said he heals quickly. "I'll be back soon," he said, "and I'll pick up where I left off. "

This year Mays is hitting .435 with no home runs and 3 RBIs to his credit. He has gotten on base at a .500 clip and scored no runs.

Injury filled May see's 10-18 mark.

With injuries mounting and no less than 3 starters hitting the DL, Gold Glover SS Chico Carrasquel and newly acquired Gil Hodges along with a MR and 2 back-up's we are down to our 4th string CF and our 10-18 record for May reflects that. The silver lining is Cepeda is his usual self hitting .303 with 9 HR and 21 RBI , he also is the league leader in by far with 17.

Willie McCovey is living up to his top billing earning Rookie of the Month for June.SP Lou Brissie while leading the league in walks is still scorching oponnents with a 2.09 ERA and Sophomore Jerry Casale is pitching very well.

9-19 Month of May brings more injuries.

CF Marv Rackley,SP Mudcat Grans, MR Jack Harshman and SS Roy Smalley Jr join 4 other on the DL. McCovey and Cepeda continue to have success But they can't do it alone. Clemente's .257 Ave is a disappointment and Aparacio has hit a paltry .164 in the leadoff slot in May.

August

An 8-20 August has us in the hunt for the #1 Pick again, just 4 games ahead of Memphis! The Al expansion teams seem to be fairing better than the NL with records of 54-68 (Reno) and 50-72 (California City). Marv Rackley has landed himself on the DL again this time he'll miss the rest of the season. 1959 is almost over and that's fine with us!

Carson Bigbee Fired as Milwaukee GM
Thursday, October 22nd, 1959
BNN reports today that general manager Carson Bigbee of the Milwaukee Braves has been relieved of his duties.

No word yet on who will be taking over the reins.
Krakauskas Latest HOF Legend
Thursday, October 22nd, 1959
There is a new statue in the 1958 Expansion League Hall of Fame.
It belongs Joe Krakauskas.
The star pitcher was inducted this past weekend. All it took to get there was 255 wins.

"I always dreamed of being a 1958 Expansion League player, but I never dreamed of being in the Hall of Fame," Krakauskas said, "I could have never envisioned myself standing next to my childhood idols and yet here I am. And to the Hall of Famers sitting behind me, I am truly humbled and in in awe of standing here in front of you."

In his career the 44-year-old Krakauskas posted a record of 255-191 and fanned 2387 batters in 4021 innings with a 3.51 ERA.

At times Joe Krakauskas fought back tears as he thanked his family and close friends for sticking by him when he had to overcome some difficult personal problems.

Summing up his years on the diamond, Krakauskas offered a hopeful message to the large induction crowd.

"I care for this game with my heart and soul. I dedicated my life to being the best pitcher I could be. You leave me humbled and grateful for this honor. I'd like to leave an offering of a message of hope. That is, with the grace of God, you can change your life, whoever you are."
First Baseman Installed in Hall of Fame
Thursday, October 22nd, 1959
Enshrinement beckoned for Phil Cavarretta, as he was inducted into the 1958 Expansion League Hall of Fame today. Cavarretta, who played many of his 2585 games at first baseman, was an outstanding hitter and batted .308 over his career and swatted 172 home runs. Baseball's newest legend collected 1335 RBIs and scored 1577 runs during his illustrious career.

But while he was class act on the field, it was off the field where Phil Cavarretta shined the most. He quietly integrated himself in his team's community, selflessly donating his time and money to various causes. The press was largely unaware of his charity and Cavarretta never made a fuss about it.

"I played a child's game for many years and this game brought me fame and fortune," Cavarretta explained during his ceremony. "For some people, it's enough, but my mother raised me to realize that money doesn't make a person great. Being good at a game doesn't make a person great. Helping those in need and giving of yourself selflessly is what makes a person great. And that's what I have tried to be my entire life: great, both on the field and off of the field."

The 1959 Draft is here

Giants, Gamblers Confirm Trade
Sunday, November 1st, 1959
The San Francisco Giants swapped 33-year-old left fielder Bob Cerv for 29-year-old reliever Billy Loes of the Gamblers after what Reno officials would only characterize as "difficult" negotiations.

Cerv has batted .266 for his career with 706 hits, 80 doubles, 45 triples, 105 home runs, and 418 RBIs.

Loes has appeared in 150 games in his career, picked up 13 saves, tossed 271.2 innings and posted a 10-16 record. He has a lifetime ERA of 3.91.
Detroit Tigers, Orioles Agree to Trade
Sunday, November 1st, 1959
In a move that has left many fans wondering, the Detroit Tigers have traded 32-year-old left fielder Bob Nieman to the Baltimore Orioles. In return, the Tigers receive 34-year-old shortstop Wayne Terwilliger.

During his career Nieman has compiled a .289 batting average and collected 690 hits, 91 home runs and 330 RBIs.

In 828 games, Terwilliger is a lifetime .267 hitter. He has knocked in 198 runs, scored 234 times, hit 23 home runs, walked 199 times and has an on-base percentage of .349.
ML News: First-Year Player Draft
Sunday, November 1st, 1959
For the newcomer to professional baseball, today's amateur draft is a rite of passage. Every young player in the country is filtered through the draft pool, assessed, reassessed, scrutinized and run through several mock drafts even before they get to the real thing. But on draft day, once you've been picked, you have a shot to do what so few men in history have done, become a 1958 Expansion League ballplayer. Memphis, Indiananapolis, California City, Reno and Kansas City will have the first five picks. The top ten players, as rated by BNN, are:

1. Phil Regan, 22 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
2. Steve D Barber, 21 year-old starting pitcher out of college.
3. Tony Gonzalez, 23 year-old center fielder out of college.
4. Joe Torre, 19 year-old catcher out of high-school.
5. Willie Davis, 19 year-old center fielder out of high-school.
6. Floyd Robinson, 23 year-old right fielder out of college.
7. Don Mincher, 21 year-old first baseman out of college.
8. Ron Santo, 19 year-old third baseman out of high-school.
9. Dick McAuliffe, 19 year-old shortstop out of high-school.
10. Ray Sadecki, 18 year-old starting pitcher out of high-school.
