Doc goes a couple better, as Turkey Stearnes starts his 1964 campaign off nicely with a 2 HR game.

And Doc is at it again a few starts later.

After a disappointing 1963 for both club and player, the Canaries will be looking for more of this from Junior.

April 1964 Recap

A fairly even start across the board, although the Stallions have had another sluggish start, 7-17 to this point. Atlanta has also begun slowly, down in the cellar in the South Division at 9-15. Meanwhile, Carolina has ridden a 9-game win streak to sit atop the East.

Milestones
  • 100 HR: Mickey Mantle; Willie McCovey

Other Observations and Points of Interest
  • Joe Williams closer at Los Angeles.
  • CC Sabathia closer at Connecticut.
  • Sandy Koufax closer at Seattle.
  • Babe Ruth starting in RF for Washington.
  • Gaylord Perry gets just his second PBL win.
  • It takes 18 games and 65 AB for Johnny Mize to hit his first HR of the season. For Willie Mays, those numbers are 21 and 71.

Yikes. Rafa Palmeiro leading the slaughter with 2 HR and 8 RBI, Ed Delahanty with a NW-record 6 runs scored. Doc White with yet another shutout.

The Lizards on the right end of this one, as El Diamante Negro one-hits the Colonials for his 4th win of the year.

No shutout, but still a thing of beauty from Satchel, continuing his dominant start to the season.

May 1964 Recap

Still tightly bunched in all 4 divs, with Boston's 4 games the widest margin. After early pitching dominance, the bats seem to be waking up.

Milestones
  • 100 HR: Barry Bonds, Aaron Judge, Mike Trout
  • 100 saves: Bill Donovan, Bobby Mathews, George Cuppy

Other Observations and Points of Interest
  • Willie Keeler hits just his 2nd PBL home run.
  • Despite being 3rd in the SE with a 361 BA, the Grays decide to put Babe Ruth as the v LHP side of a platoon in RF with Pete Rose. This is reversed by month’s end.
  • Hilton Smith into the rotation at Portland.
  • Joe Williams back into the rotation at Los Angeles, Zack Greinke closer.
  • Harmon Killebrew hits his first PBL HR. He’s had just 91 career AB.
  • After a “lost” 1963 in which he slashed just 224/271/308 with 3 HR in 158 AB, Miggy Cabrera is back to his best and is into double-figures for dingers already this season.

Monthly Award Winners

Northwest League
  • Batter – Ted Williams (Connecticut): 373 / 2 HR / 18 RBI
  • Pitcher – Greg Maddux (Boston): 5-1 / 1.04 / 46 K / 52 IP

Southeast League
  • Batter – Willie Mays (Virginia): 309 / 10 HR / 26 RBI
  • Pitcher – Mike Mussina (Virginia): 5-1 / 1.48 / 34 K / 42.2 IP

Weekly Award Winners
  • 4th: Rafael Palmeiro (Boston) / Jose Cruz (New Orleans)
  • 11th: Mickey Lolich (New Jersey) / Charlie Gehringer (Indianapolis)
  • 18th: Bill Terry (Connecticut) / Johnny Mize (New Orleans)
  • 25th: George Sisler (New Jersey) / Willie Mays (Virginia)

Fernando has never gone close to repeating his outstanding rookie season form, and yet has been more than serviceable in the time since, with his career record currently sitting at 52-38 (most wins for the franchise) and his 2.89 ERA translating to a healthy 121 ERA+.

Outings like this, however, show what he is truly capable of on his day.

His side's strong start has quickly petered out as they resume their near-habitual spot at the foot of the North Division, but Cannonball is having another excellent season. The Rainiers are closer this season - just 7 games back of the Stags - so all hope is not lost just yet and performances like this will tell them they can compete on their day.

All rise...

Not as frequent an occurrence as one might expect with all these big bats on show. Maybe because of all the golden arms at the other end of the equation...
