White Sox and Tigers

Both ball clubs have two days off as they are both returning from the East coast with Chicago, South side as their destinations. Currently the Tigers have a winning record against each team in the American League.

The Tigers and White Sox begun their critical 3 game series before a paid admission crowd of 5,952. It was the Tigers breaking out to a 4-0 lead but 7 unanswered runs give the Chicago the W.

Game 2 of the 'big series' took on even more importance for the Tigers as with yesterday's loss to the Sox they were verging on losing that shortened space in the standings that they had worked so hard to reduce over the past month. The lead now stood at 4.5 games.

Covey took the mound for the Tigers. He would face 13-3 Reb Russel.

Here is what the bottom of the 9th looked like with the box score and summary to follow:

Next Series

The Sox/Tigers series was actually a 2 game set as Detroit will be playing back to back doubleheaders against Cleveland. A tall task in this era but back in the day....

Aug 19 Game 1

The Tigers travel to Cleveland with the prospect of trying to sweep back to back DH's (aim high, right?) and send Hooks Dauss to the hill to face 'Sad Sam Jones'. True to his namesake, Jones had plenty to feel blue about as the Tigers worked him over relentlessly on their way to accomplishing 25% of their goal over the next two days.

Aug 19 - the nightcap

Detroit's Jean Dubuc was 3-0 with a sub 2.00 ERA vs the Cleveland club and he sailed through the first 3 innings without much effort as the Tigers staked him to a 2-0 lead. But, single runs in the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th were too much for the stalled Detroit offense to overcome. So, the Indians win the nightcap by a 4-2 score behind Lynn Brenton who won his first game of the season (1-0).

The Sox split their doubleheader with the Brownies.

August 20 - Game 1 of the DH

Maybe they thought they could pitch around him or maybe they just flat out lost command of the strike zone but either way 9 free passes issued by Cleveland pitchers paved the way for a 5-3 Tiger win. Ty, the beneficiary of 4 free passes, was cut down once stealing but also was successful 2 times while scoring a pair of runs.

Aug 20 Game 2

21 Game winner Covelski couldn't not hold off the Indians in the nightcap as Cleveland gets the W and split for the day.

The last place A's (40-66) travel to Detroit for a 3 game set. The opener was Sam Crawford's time to shine.

For the second day in a row it was all Detroit Tigers as they rolled over the hapless A's before 5,856 paying customers at Navin Field. Led by a relentless Ty Cobb his 4 hits and 3 stolen bases accounted for 3 runs scored and were enough to defeat the A's alone as the Tigers won 11-2. Jean Duboc notched another W and is now 17-10.

Meanwhile, Joe 'Blitzen' Benz who began the year 4-0 with an 0.55 ERA for the White Sox was being pummeled by Red Sox hitters as Boston took down Chicago 15-5 at Comisky Park.

Aug 23 Standings

Here are the standings for both leagues.
The Red Sox are waking up a bit but a lot of ground to make up on two teams.

The Tigers couldn't make it a sweep in their first home stand since the long east coast road trip as Jim Nabors pitched a complete game for Connie Mack's last place A's. The White Sox handled the red ones to go back up 3.5 games. However, they face the task of back to back doubleheaders against the Yankees over the next two days. Ironically, the Tigers will have back to back doubleheaders against the Yanks next week.

Game ONE of the DH goes to Washington as the Senators take a close one stretching the Tiger losing streak to two. Cobb CS for the 35th time this season vs. 44 successes.

Aug 25 Game 2

Hooks Dauss notched his 19th W of the season by going the distance while Sam Crawford hit a triple and plated 4 runners which made for an easy 10-4 Tiger win. The White Sox were off so the lead is back to 4.5 games.

The Red Sox arrived at Navin Field with a 64-48 record (-10.5 GB). The screenshots tell the story of this extra inning contest. Note Carl Mays is the pitcher of record whose errant pitch sent Ray Chapman to his death in R/L Mays had a reputation for pitching in tight, even hitting batters, and his feud with Ty Cobb was documented in this passage:

Mays had good control for a submariner, but he also was known as a “headhunter” who was not shy about brushing batters, especially right-handers, off the plate; he was consistently among the American League leaders in hit batsmen. His feud with Detroit Tigers great Ty Cobb was particularly intense: In one game, he threw at the cantankerous “Georgia Peach” every time he came to bat, prompting Cobb to throw his bat at Mays, Mays to call Cobb a “yellow dog,” the umpires to separate the two as they tried to trade blows, and Mays to hit Cobb on the wrist with his next pitch. In another game, Cobb laid a bunt down the first-base line so he could spike Mays when the pitcher covered the base.
