Great Day for Chapman
May 6, 1950 (Saturday) - Philadelphia, PA
W/L record 9-11 (.450), 7th place, 2.5 GB
A breezy day at Shibe park found the Athletics splitting their two game series against the Browns today 7-5 behind the bat of center fielder Sam Chapman. Chapman's three-run homer in the fourth inning off of St. Louis starter Stubby Overmire (L, 0-2) proved to be the decisive offense required for the victory. Chapman also hit a solo shot in the third, and finished with four RBI on the day.

"I've been upset with our team offense this season", said the veteran center fielder. "We haven't been getting the timely hitting we need to win."
When asked about his two home runs today he replied, "I usually do well against Stubby, but today the wind may have helped a little."
Either way, the Athletics will take the win. The team has been in a slump as of late, with a 3-7 record in their last ten games.
Bobby Shantz (W, 3-1) had a rough start allowing five runs in the first three innings and gave up a three RBI triple to Billy Johnson, but settled down nicely in the middle and late innings to get the complete game and win.
The Chicago White Sox come in to town tomorrow for an odd one-day double header. The Cleveland Indians will arrive for a three game series starting Tuesday.
