Three new players adorned the 1898 Hall of Fame ballot. The returning players on the ballot were Jim McCormick, George Bradley, Will White, and Cap Anson. The new players were as follows:
Jumbo McGinnis was a three-time 20-game winner and a two time all-star who spent most of his 11-year career in Washington where he amassed 160 career wins.

Dude Easterbrook was a third baseman who spent most of his 12 year career in Detroit. He managed two all-star appearances, a silver slugger, and a gold glove en route to 1391 career hits.

Emil Gross was a catcher in the Chicago Cubs organization for most of his career where he earned five all-star appearances, three silver sluggers, and a gold glove award over the course of his 12 years in the bigs.

Pitcher Jim McCormick won induction in 1898. George Bradley, Will White, Jumbo McGinnis, and Cap Anson earned enough votes to appear on the 1899 ballot. Dude Easterbrook and Emil Gross both failed to earn the requisite 5% to make the 1899 ballot.
