Yankees obliterate Rangers in ALCS
The Yankees regular season success against the Rangers pitching staff seemed to magnify during the playoffs. The Yankees collected an astounding 24 runs on 38 hits in a 3-game sweep of the Rangers.
The Rangers had a glimmer of hope for the series in the third game, when they led the Yankees 7-1 after 4 innings. But the Yankees bats came alive again, propelling New York to a 10-9 win and a series sweep.
The World Series thus matched up the Yankees against the defending champion Reds. The Yankees bats cooled and their pitching faltered as the Reds swept the Yankees in mostly one-sided games that featured great hitting by the Big Red Machine, especially 2B Joe Morgan.
Executive Manager Riley Payton had the following to say about the post-season, "I'm proud of the way our guys battled to take the AL West pennant. That is something they can never take away from us and this was a season the fans will remember."
"As far as the Yankees, I don't know if I've ever seen a team hit the way they did. For the most part, we did not have costly walks, errors or mental mistakes that led to their offensive explosions. They just got hit after hit after hit after hit. It's like we were their own personal batting cage. The media says we got wore down by the long pennant race and the Yankees were fresh. I'm not sure if that is true. We were ready to play and the Yankees just flat beat us. Their catcher Thurman Munson is a game-changer ... he shuts down the running game entirely and is the only catcher that can do that in the majors. Also, our best left-handed hitter, Ben Oglivie, got hurt at end of the season and it proved to be a major liability. We needed his left handed RBI ability versus their right-handed starters. So it was a bad matchup for us and on top of that we didn't play or pitch well. The wheels came off. But we'll be back strong in '75 I believe."
"The Yankees are a formidable team and work hard for their success. That being said, I'll admit it was a little nice to see the Reds destroy the Yankees the way we just got destroyed. It seems like the Yankees used up all their hitting on us and left very little for the World Series!"
