The Philadelphia Athletics defeated the New York Yankees Sunday afternoon 6-5 in 11 innings. The A's led early behind the sturdy pitching of Bobby Shantz, but the Yankee bats awoke in the later innings as they stabbed Shantz with three runs in the 7th and then tied the game in the bottom of the 9th forcing the game into overtime. The A's were able to pull it out in the top of the 11th off the bat of center fielder Sam Chapman. Chapman hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out off New York reliever Bob Porterfield (1-1). Bob Hooper (2-0) picthed two innings and got the win for Philadelphia in relief.
