The Philadelphia Athletics took care of business against the Detroit Tigers today at Briggs Stadium behind a solid pitching performace by Bobby Shantz. The ace lefty picked up his league leading fifth victory pitching a complete game scattering four hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Loser Virgil Trucks (4-3) gave up 11 hits in eight innings, but struck out seven.
The A's scored two runs in the first, one in the second, and finished their offense with a solo home run by George Shuba in the 7th. The home run was Shuba's second on the year. Elmer Valo continued his quest for most valuable player going 3 for 3 with an RBI.
Phildelphia hopes to hand the first place Tigers a fourth straight loss and sweep the brief two-game set Saturday before heading to St. Louis.
