A's win double header
May 21, 1950 (Sunday) - St. Louis, MO
W/L record 17-18 (.486), 6th place, 3.5 GB, Streak W2, Last10 5-5
The Philadelphia Athletics nipped the St. Louis Browns Sunday by consecutive 3-2 scores.
A's catcher Joe Tipton's go ahead two-run home run in the second inning off Stubby Overmire (L, 0-3) was enough to beat the Browns in the first game. Lou Brissie (4-4) pitched six strong innings to pick up the win.
Game two required 13 innings to settle, as Ferris Fain tied the game in the top of the ninth inning with a solo home run off reliever Al Widmar.
The A's had the lead-off runner reach in the 10th, 11th, and 12th innings, but were unable to capitalize. It took a solo homer from Eddie Joost off Dick Starr (1-2) to provide the needed offense in the 13th.
Dick Fowler gets his first win of the season in relief, and starter Joe Coleman was awarded player of the game for a strong nine inning performance allowing only one earned run on six hits and three walks.
The A's are off Monday, and will play the Browns once more before heading to Chicago.
