The Pittsburgh Burgers were the inaugural Players League Champions, but they did so in an unconventional way. With only one division the second place Burghers finished the season with an 82-58 record, eight games behind the heavily favored Brooklyn Ward Wonders. But the Players League Championship pitted the first and second place teams against each other in a best of 3 series.
With an offense led by Jake Beckley (.301/.385/.414) and a strong rotation featuring Harry Staley (32-11, 2.09 ERA) and Andrew King (24-18, 3.29 ERA), the underdog Burghers not only knocked off the Ward Wonders, but swept them in two straight games.
