  • Hitting coach Jay Bell and Team Trainer Todd Tomczyk have decided to part ways with the team.
  • I put a lot of effort into trying to bring Jay Bell back as he is a Pittsburgh favorite and I liked his approach. However, Jay has no interest in returning. He would like to spend some time with his family and then evaluate his career as a major league coach. Good luck Jay.
  • I decided to look through the minors and see if there were any coaches buried in the organization. I found Terry Pendleton in single A I immediately promoted him to be our Major League hitting coach. Terry has a slight problem as he tends to favor veterans but I know he know he has spent his life in baseball and has a lot of knowledge to pass on.
  • Next on the list was finding a team trainer. Tomczyk has decided with the change in leadership he would like to find work elsewhere. So I offered a 3 year $70K contract to Mark O'neal. He has a history of working well with arm injuries so we hope he signs within the next few days.
  • The Manager's position at AAA Indianapolis was open and one of the first men interviewed for the job was Joey Cora. This was a guy that all through his playing days people had talked about how he'd be managing some day. He's all ready a great fielding instructor so it didn't take long for me to offer him a 3 year deal for 80k per.
  • I was surprised to get a call from Jay Bell later on in the week. It turns out he just cant be kept away from the game. He informed me though that he understands that we have all ready promoted TP to be our hitting coach and that he would actually prefer to work in the minors developing young talent. So I made Jay an offer to be our hitting coach at single A Jamestown. I offered him a hefty salary (100k for 1 yr.) but I know all of the young players will benefit from having Jay around.
  • Lastly, we offered Jack Howell the hitting coach job at Rookie League Bradenton. He is a little inexperienced but he knows hitting and we hope to hear back from him soon.
