RHP Jason Grilli Lost the closers job early in the year but still led the team with 82 appearances. Grilli finished the year with 15 saves 17 holds and a 4.42 ERA. Jason's problems center around his control. He's due to make $4 mil. this season and we are hoping he can get back to being a dominant pitcher at the back of our bullpen.
RHP Chris Perez Acquired mid-season from Cleveland and pitched really well after arriving in Pittsburgh. For the season he pitched 69.1 innings notching 21 saves with a 3.63 ERA. We know there's quite a bit of value here but Perez made $7.3 mil. last year and is due for a raise through arbitration. We need to create some budget room and feel that he could be expendable.
RHP Chris Leroux Had a terrible last 2 months of the season to bump his ERA up to 5.27 in 70 IP earning 12 holds. Leroux has an affordable contract and will be around next year however he will have to compete for a spot in spring training.
RHP Jose Contreras Had an awesome month of June which brought down what otherwise would have been highly inflated season numbers. Finished the year with a 4.05 ERA 73.1 IP including 4 holds. Contreras is a free agent and were not looking to give the 41 year old a free agent type contract.
LHP Tony Watson Finished the season with a 3.26 ERA over 58 IP and notched 9 holds. Watson had a 1.47 WHIP which may have been inflated by his .340 BABIP. Tony was one of our most consistent relievers and were hoping he continues that trend as he has an affordable contract.
RHP Bryan Morris Had a pretty solid season that included 3.42 ERA over 52.2 IP. He had a worrisome.266 BABIP which may suggest that his numbers could trend upward next year but he will be given a chance to compete for a job in the spring.
RHP Jared Hughes Posted solid numbers that inclued a 3.14 ERA over 28.2 IP with 4 holds. We are hoping the big right hander can put it all together for a big season next year.
LHP Mike Zagurski The minor league journeyman posted good numbers in his short stint in the big leagues. Zagurski pitched 7 innings and posted a 1.23 ERA in 2013. We are in need of at least one more lefty for the pen and Zagurski will be given the opportunity to win the job.
RHP Jeanmar Gomez Gomez pitched 3.2 scoreless innings in 2013 and is definitely a candidate for a bullpen spot for 2014
