2013 Player by Player Analysis: Infield
C Russell Martin The veteran backstop tied for second on the team in hits (143) and was third on the team in HR (21) and RS (76). Russell ended up with a final line of .272/.340/.439 and provided stellar defense all year long. Martin is entering the final year of a 2 year deal and if he can match the production from 2013 then we feel pretty confident about our catching situation.
C Michael McKenry Did a serviceable job as a back up in limited playing time. .200/.272.371 was the final line but added a little pop with 7 HR and 26 RBI. McKenry did not make an error in any of the 39 games that he appeared in. He made $505K last year and is do a bit of a raise through arbitration because he is a super 2 player. We'd like to keep Michael around but we think he may have some value on the trade market and we are open to offers.
1B Gaby Sanchez Hit pretty well working in a platoon at first base last year. His final line was .284/.349/.418. He had 9 HR 36 RBI 42 RS. I'm wondering if at age 30 Gaby could work these numbers out through a whole season and get back to the production levels he had in 2010-11. It is one option that we are considering.
1B Garret Jones Has kept his power numbers up as he worked in a platoon at 1B and filled in in the outfield last year. The final line was .276/.343/.491 with 18 HR and 59 RBI. Jones made $4 mil. last year and is entering arbitration so he's do for a raise. He could be a trade chip if anyone were interested but he does provide power in the middle of the line up which we are lacking so I wouldn't mind keeping him around.
2B Neil Walker Put up very solid numbers in 2013 with a line of .286/.359/.454 with 16 HR 70 RBI and 81 RS. Walker signed a $ 4 mil. one year extension, buying out his first arbitration year. I am seriously considering buying out the rest of his arbitration years but I'll need to free up some budget room first.
3B Pedro Alvarez Led the team with 28 HR and also in RBI with 91 the downside though was his .208 BA and .278 OBP. Pedro is going to be 27 next season and should be entering his peak years. He has an affordable contract for next season ($750K) so we'll continue to let him grow and hope new hitting coach Terry Pendleton has a positive effect on him.
3B Brandon Inge Played very fine defensively as a back up 3B however his batting line was .218/.294/.342. Made $1.25 mil. last year and he is heading into free agency. We just don't have the budget room to pay more for a light hitting back-up 3B so he'll be hitting the FA market this off-season.
3B Josh Harrison Batted .278 in 36 AB with a HR and 4 RBI. Posted great numbers in AAA Indianapolis with a line of .325/.368/.442. We know what Harrison is capable of and he will most likely fill in at 2B and 3B in 2014.
SS Clint Barmes Was the defacto starting shortstop getting more time there than anyone else and playing stellar defense. His line was .230/.289/.330 with 5 HR and 36 RBI. We might make an 1 year offer to Barmes if we can get a significant discount from the $5.5 mil. he made last year.
SS John McDonald The 39 year old shortstop was given 148 at bats posted a line of .142/.189/.230. He hits free agency this winter and won't be returning to Pittsburgh.
