The winter meetings came and went pretty quietly and its really been a quiet off season so far. Most of the big named free agents are still on the board and there really hasn't even been many rumors flying.

We came away from the meetings pretty happy though as we were able to reach a deal for 27 year old 1B Chris Davis from the Orioles in exchange for 27 year old SS Jordy Mercer. Davis had a batting line of .269/.307/.489 with 30 HR and 84 RBI in 2013 and will start the season platooning at 1B with Gabby Sanchez. Mercer will report to the AAA Norfolk Tides where he will play 2B and bat 3rd in the order. The deal made a lot of sense as Mercer just wasn't in our immediate plans and we were sorely lacking lefties in our line up. It was an extremely difficult decision to take Davis over Allen Craig though as Craig is definitely more of a pure hitter and probably has a higher ceiling than Davis. When it came down to it though my greatest concern was that we would have to get tied into a long term expensive contract and our biggest need was a left handed bat.

We also came to terms on a minor league contract with 19 year old C Charles Moorman. Greg Smith sees a lot of potential in Moorman. He's slightly below average defensively but could be a 25 homer guy with a great batting eye.

We have one outstanding contract left and we are pretty certain the roster is set for the 2014 season. I feel very confident that we have fulfilled all of our needs. I acquired many more players than we have spots for but I like the competition aspect and the depth will help us compete through out a 162 game schedule. I will outline the 40 man roster and what the depth chart will look like heading into spring training in the next post.

Officials for Houston confirmed that they have traded 27 year old reliever Ryan Webb to the Oakland Athletics. In return, the Astros will receive 20 year old minor league centerfielder B.J. Boyd. Webb split the 2013 season between Houston and Miami pitching 61.2 innings going 4-4 with 6 saves and a 2.19 ERA. Webb is the 2nd addition this offseason to a revamped Oakland bullpen and he figures to work in a setup role.

The Brewers swapped 27 year old 1B Taylor Green to the Phillies getting 26 year old reliever Justin De Fratus and 21 year old minor league catcher Cameron Gallagher in return. Green went to the plate 347 times for the Brewers in 2013 posting a .248/.298/.383 batting line with 9 HR and 49 RBI. Green will play third for the Phils and bat somewhere in the middle of the order. De Fratus made 26 appearances for the Phils last season pitching 37.1 innings with a 3.62 ERA. It looks like he'll be competing for a bull pen spot for the Brewers.

The Indians and Rays have come to terms on a deal that will send 25 year old reliever Cody Allen to Tampa Bay for 21 year old minor league CF Granden Goetzman. Allen had a solid 2013 season for Cleveland. Eventually taking over the closer role he made 66 appearances pitching 73.2 innings with 14 saves and a 3.18 ERA. He will be handling the 9th inning duties for the Rays.
