Rangers complete '73 Amateur Draft, get Winfield

The Rangers completed their first amateur draft, picking 5th in each round, under executive manager Riley Payton and acquited the following players:

1) OF Dave Winfield
2) SP Randy Jones
3) RP Max Leon
4) SS Pepe Frias
5) OF Dick Sharon
6) LF Don Castle

The team is continuing to work on contract agreements for the rookies.

Also, the team agreed to to a trade with Oakland, sending reliever Steve Lawson to Oakland for OF Bobby Darwin....

In the RRL, the Boston Red Sox won the 1972 World Series titles, sweeping the Dodgers 4 games to none to secure the title.

Rangers end season with a 71-91 record

The Rangers ended the season on a positive note, winning their last 5 games despite a rash of injuries to their outfield.

Executive manager Riley Payton said, "We're happy with some of the progress we've made this year. First baseman Don Mincher gets my gameball for the year. He started out a bit slow but really led our team and I hope he sticks around for another year or two."

Valmeyer 7, Bunker Hill 1 (MEBL -- Low Minors)

We couldn't get anything going in this one. We had enough baserunners, but couldn't hit with me on base. Valmeyer SP Al Kline went 7.1 innings for the win and he led off the 5th with a solo HR. LF Mike Thoday also had a two-run HR in the inning and broke the game open. We'll try for the rubber game tomorrow.

Bunker Hill 6, Valmeyer 2 (MEBL -- Low Minors)

We halted our losing streak at 5. Valmeyer had been playing well, but they didn't today. Their offense was poor and their pitchers handed out 10 walks. 3B Russell McDonald had 4 hits for us and scored twice. SS Mark Goodwin had two hits and two RBI. SP Dustin Watts threw 5 innings of 1-run ball for the win.
