Rangers approaching rubicon of '72 season

The Texas Rangers, at 37-36, are 6 1/2 games back in their division. After a day off, the team is preparing for 6 games in 5 days against Kansas City and California, with both teams sitting above them in the division standings. Executive manager Riley Payton offered the following perspectives on the opportunity to content for a division title:

Rangers trade for Phillies outfielder Lis

Seeking another young right-hand hitter that can get on base, the Rangers acquired first baseman/outfielder Joe Lis from the Phillies for lefty reliever Jim Shellenbach, reserve firstbaseman Danny Walton and minor league pitching prospect Mike Thompson.

The Rangers are currently 35-34 and are six games behind division leader Kansas City.

Bunker Hill 11, Lebanon 5 (MEBL -- Low Minors)

Our best offensive game in a long time. We batted around in the 3rd and 4th innings. SS Jeff Hancock, recently added to the team, went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and drove in 3 runs. SP Zane Brady had another fine start (6 IP, 2 ER) and got the win. We were shaky in the 9th, made a couple errors, and gave up 3 unearned runs.

Lebanon 6, Bunker Hill 2 (MEBL -- Low Minors)

We took a brief 2-0 lead, but Lebanon scored 6 unanswered runs. RF Joe Hill led their offense with 2 hits and 2 walks. LF Herb Parker and 2B Dan McKinley also had 2 hits apiece. The Snow Monsters drew 8 walks to go with their 10 hits and won this one without much trouble. We'll try to pick up the rubber game tomorrow.
