Background to the Background
I began OOTP'ing back in 2012 or thereabouts. As Winter Storm Linus was dropping a bunch of snow on the Midwest, I was quick simming from 1901 to present with real MLB franchises and fictional MLB players. I remember booting up a save and wondering which fictional player would become the "Babe Ruth" of the sim and so on. That was super interesting to me. I could play through 100 years of quick simmage in a single night, watching the eras change the flavor of the baseball being played. One standout fictional player I remember was named Dave Swint--a true slugger with 700+ HR and someone whose career I was eager to follow. He has nothing to do with the current thread, just making a point that my earliest memories of OOTP involve running quick sims as described above.

After that, I had an on-again/off-again relationship with OOTP as I got more involved with roster editing in console baseball games such as MLB The Show. I would create franchise threads, usually rebuilds, on Operation Sports (Astros, Twins, Padres, A's, Marlins). For a few years in the mid 2010's, I was also deeply involved with producing a custom roster set called the "OSFM Hybrid" roster for MLB The Show along with Willard76 and Teeds on the Operation Sports forums. I realized that I spent more time editing (much more time) than actually playing, so console baseball games got put on the back burner.

As I started kicking OOTP around again in 2019 and 2020, I developed a taste for MLB expansions where I'd set up a +2 expansion, rearrange the divisions, beg for custom artwork (usually in the retro logos thread...thanks Txranger and knuckler), spend a week getting everything set up to my liking and then...kind of lose interest.

Then, COVID happened and I got into some of the Discord communities around Perfect Team from 2020 to 2023. I was anywhere from free-to-play to a miniature whale, and my Fighting Frogs would regularly be found in diamond league or perfect league, and in a friends league called DLL "Diamonds Legends League," which was founded by Walnut33. There was also dropping bits in the Twitch chat when DRC and YourKidnies would stream their weekly Perfect Team affiliate show on Thursday nights. That previous sentence probably will not make a lot of sense unless you also were pretty far into Perfect Team at some point! I was probably addicted to silver tournaments for a little bit there

As Perfect Team ran its course and I couldn't really keep up with the volume of messages and content in the PT Discord anymore (and maintain a full-time job and fitness and semblance of a social life, which I opted to do), I ended up getting involved in a pretty competitive online league (but one that didn't sim every 30 minutes) called TGS "The Grandest Salami," which was founded by Chimaera. I ran the Detroit Tigers for about 16 in-game years, after the original GM faded out immediately after the inaugural draft. I stepped down about a year ago in real life--we never won anything but were usually pretty competitive. And it was a lot of fun.

The next chapter as I've purchased OOTP27? Well, that brings me to this thread on OOTP Developments Forums. My aim here is to establish a long-running thread to chronicle an MLB+2 expansion with more details below...

Background
Now that I've shared my "bona fides" for doing an OOTP Dynasty here, what exactly do I have in mind? This MLB+2 expansion involves the addition of the Carolina Pines to the NL and the Utah Canyons to the AL. The thinking is Carolina (either Charlotte or Raleigh, I chose Raleigh) and Salt Lake City are two of the frontrunners for the next MLB expansion. So, I will be taking on the Carolina Pines as a GM-only/God Mode type of thing whereas the Canyons will be AI-controlled along with the other MLB franchises. The hope is this thing goes for decades in game and the Pines and Canyons will be linked like the Rockies and Marlins or the D'Backs and Rays.

There won't be any coaches, managers, support staff, or scouting. In my experience, it becomes a bit of an advantage when stacking all of the best trainers, coaches, scouts and so forth and the AI needs a little help to make things interesting. I will be doing the GM stuff (generally with the most restrictive settings), dev lab stuff, watching the games, and chronicling anything I find interesting about the league.

Now, I don't have the talent that a lot of the modders on here have, but I am happy with the fact that I've created the artwork for both the Carolina Pines and the Utah Canyons, logos/uniforms/ballcaps, using some of the fine free programs available on the forums.

The settings have been plugged in, the minor league affiliates have been created, a 32-team, 4 divisions worth of 8 teams schedule has been located, and the expansion draft has been run...we will meet the expansion teams in a bit more detail in the next post.

Alright peeps... After a close game with the Phillies... We have 1 more game left with them. Can we take the series? After a call up with Ward, He's been a great fill for Kyle Tucker. (Traded)
In 25 ABs, He has 6 hits, 3 Hrs, 5 RBIs. He's playing great defense and also coming in clutch in game changing moments. Miguel Vargas FINALLY hit his first HR of the season. Hunter Brown Struggled with his first game 3.1 Innings, giving up 4 ERs with 2 ks.

Under the Radar Trade: Jordan Diaz and 1 prospect for Tyler Freeman..

7 game win streak... Lets fackin gooooo!!!!

We also TRADED KYLE TUCKER!!!!

Kyle Tucker, Willie Santos, and Pablo Ramirez
for
Hunter Brown (Houston retains 70% of Contract), Francisco Frias, Cam Smith and $42,000,000

In the Off-season, We signed Tucker as a trading chip...
2 years $75,000,000... with and opt-out clause of year 1...

We promoted Ryan Ward to take Tuckers spot and, in his 1st game... He went deep... He was also able to play some good defense to show us. We never needed Tucker.

As for Brown, Frias, and Smith... We are waiting to assign them to their roles. Once time expires...

Smith is already in the minors.

Nick Bitsko will be getting the ball for us against Cleveland. This Bitsko first start of the season. He's coming off an injury, and he is a Rule 5 pick of ours.

In the year 2000, as part of MLB's rapid expansion to 60 clubs, 4 final teams were added to the map, one in each of the 4 major leagues, to bring each to a total of 15. The Northeast League added the Norfolk Navigators of Norfolk, VA; the Central League added the Austin Violets in Austin, TX; the Western League added the San Bernardino 66ers of California's Inland Empire; and the Atlantic League added our Jacksonville Anchors to the First Coast. The Anchors have played 26 seasons now, and had a fair amount of success for a modern expansion franchise, but have just fired their manager and GM after a very disappointing 2025 season. So, we're taking over as GM!

About the League
This version of MLB contains all the teams from my thread in the Mods forum, with an alternate history that dates from 1903. I'll get into plenty of that as we go, but here are some of the broad strokes:

The most successful teams in World Series terms are the New York Highlanders (18), Boston Minutemen (12), Buffalo Beacons (7), and St. Louis Spirits (7). I would normally play as St. Louis, my home team, but they've been a little too successful for my taste - too easy to win there. Three other teams have won six titles. 37 of the league's 60 teams have won the World Series at some point in their history, and 23 have not (including Jacksonville).

Speaking of the Spirits, they are the top team in terms of overall historical wins, with the Brooklyn Kings, Minutemen, Chicago Blues, and Highlanders rounding out the top 5.

The most interesting thing about the league, from my perspective, is having four subleagues. This is not actually possible in OOTP natively, but I make it work with a pack of custom schedules that I wrote a few years back. I will be making some awards decisions myself (OOTP will not pick 4 MVPs, for example), and arranging the playoff bracket manually to match how it should go according to the rules I've set out.

At times I will probably mention the "Original 16". As in the real MLB, there was a long period of time where just 16 teams in two leagues contested everything. The league expanded in 1948, 1955, 1960, 1965, 1968, 1975, 1982, 1989, 1995, and finally in 2000, with between 2-8 expansion teams at each stage. The 1960 expansion marked the introduction of the 4-subleague format, as 8 historical teams from the west coast were absorbed, as if gobbling up the classic PCL.

Each league, like the AL and NL we know, has three divisions of 5 teams each, with divisions labeled North, Central, and South (though not always divided strictly on those lines). The playoff format is similar to that used by MLB in my childhood (the 90s and 2000s). Division winners qualify, as well as one wild card from each league, and division rivals cannot play one another in the first round. The division series round is also expanded to 7 games rather than 5. Once the four leagues have crowned their champions, the bracket is re-seeded with the best league champion playing the worst, regardless of which in-game subleague they play in. This does mess up the History pages in-game sometimes, but that's worth it for me.

About the Atlantic League
The AL contains teams from the eastern parts of the Midwest and the South. The division alignment and 2025 standings look like this:

In the playoffs, the top-seeded Lakers were upset by New Orleans in seven games, while Memphis beat Tampa in six. The Lions then easily took down the division rival Crescents in five games to win the AL championship for the first time in their history (since 1995). Due to upsets in every league, Memphis was the top seed in the League Champions round, and defeated the lowest seed, the Western League champs from Las Vegas, in five games. But they fell to the team of destiny, the CL champion Austin Violets, who became the first team from the 2000 expansion class to win it all.

The most historically successful clubs from the AL are Cleveland and Louisville, who are two of the aforementioned teams that have six championships, while Detroit has 5 and Pittsburgh 4. Those teams all were part of the Original 16, as was Cincinnati. The team that has won the AL championship the most times (1960-present) is New Orleans with 10, but they have only converted those 10 appearances in the "Final Four" to one World Series trophy, in 1987.

About the Anchors
As mentioned, the Anchors were established in 2000. They had a pretty typical start to a franchise, losing over 100 games in the first two years, but put together their first winning season in 2004 at 85-77, only missing the playoffs by 4 games. The first playoff appearance would have to wait until 2008, where that same 85-77 record was enough to win a weak South division. Their first playoff win would have to wait, though, as they were swept by Cincinnati. The following year, in 2009. the Anchors finally got their first playoff wins, winning the AL wild card that year and upsetting a 106-win New Orleans team in the first round, before losing again to Cincinnati in their first ALCS.

After that, Jacksonville entered another fallow period. Losing seasons followed in '10 and '11, after which the face of the franchise, catcher Joe Mauer, left in free agency to sign with San Francisco. Mauer (2002-11) and his longtime teammate, CF Justin Leone (2001-13), still hold a number of team records. Hard to fault Mauer, who let the Seals pay him $225 million over eight years. He would go on to play for five other teams in his career, but thankfully never came back to play against us in the AL. He only just announced his retirement, so it is actually today (November 7, 2025) that the team officially retired his number 7.

There is one more number hanging beyond the outfield fences at the Grounds, and it is the #22 of Mark Prior (2002-15, 17-18). Prior was the first Anchor to win a major award, capturing the 2006 Cy Young award, and accrued 220 of his 261 career wins in an Anchors uniform. Even in retirement, he is part of the lore of the current roster - with one year left on his contract, management chose to trade him to Anaheim for two young players, including the other contender for greatest player in team history, Aledmys Diaz. (I love it when the most random players you can think of become greats.)

In the mid-2010s, the Anchors started to hit big again on some of their draft picks, and it all came together starting in 2018. Their first rounders in 2013-16 were Kris Bryant, Matt Chapman, Harrison Bader, and Nicky Lopez, who were the four most important players on that 2018 team and a couple years beyond. The 2018-24 Anchors won seven straight division titles, and though five of those came with first-round exits, that run also finally, in 2024, produced Jacksonville's first Atlantic League championship with a six-game victory over Louisville. They would lose in the League Champions' round in six games to eventual champion Syracuse, but these were still new heights for the Anchors.

Unfortunately, 2024 was the end of an era in a lot of ways. Bryant and Chapman were already gone before that, and the likes of Miguel Sano, Ryan Zimmerman, Yovani Gallardo, and Robbie Grossman all departed as free agents, leaving not much behind. When the 2025 season started to go south, Bader was traded to Cleveland (where he joined Sano on a playoff team). Of course, this is the season that cost our predecessors their jobs, and what we now inherit.

No player has been inducted into the Hall of Fame in an Anchors cap, but Mauer, Prior, and Dan Haren have yet to become eligible.

There have been two no-hitters thrown in Anchors history, both in the 2023 season, and by the immortal Frank Herrmann, who I had no recollection of (though Guardians fans might). In this league he is still active at age 40, pitching for Ottawa, and is one of five pitchers tied with a career record 3 no-hitters as he also threw one with St. Louis in 2019.

The 2025-26 Offseason

Here's what needs to be done to prep for the 2026 season:

For one, we have no manager, bench coach, pitching coach, 1B coach, or trainer. I prefer to play GM only and whine and gripe about the decisions my in-game managers make.

We aren't losing that much in free agency, but we already barely have any pitchers to begin with. I've reached out to pending free agent SP Trey Killian about an extension - he wants about $11 million per season to start negotiation & I might go for that.

On the hitting side, there's less to do, but it would be nice to find a half-decent center fielder. We didn't have much at that position after Bader was traded.

I'll run down the current state of the team before I do anything too crazy.

I posted a bit about this project in the General forum because of some strange decisions the AI was making, but thought I'd share the results of my 2026 season (and hopefully beyond!). Overall, things went really well....this team was MUCH better than the real life Mets have been so far, but I'll let you see if it ended in a "Metsian" way or not. I play out every game so I am a true manager, but let the AI David Stearns make all the roster decisions for better or worse.

Here's how the final standings played out-

The only thing you can't see is that the Braves tied the Pirates for the last NL Wildcard spot and Atlanta won the one game playoff to take the spot.

Obviously, it was a great season for the Mets....anytime you have 9 more wins than any other team in the league, things are going well! It was pretty much a wire to wire run and there was never really any question as to whether they would win the Division.

Here’s a look at the players that made this season happen-

Transactions- Where did some of these guys come from?

3/29/26- Alex Faedo was signed as a minor league FA.
4/5/26- Richard Lovelady was released and ended up signing with Colorado.
7/14/26- Luis Garcia was released....no one else signed him and he has now retired. His numbers aren't shown above (because he retired maybe?) but he was pretty bad.
7/18/26- In probably the biggest deal David Stearns made, we traded minor league P RJ Gordon to the Texas Rangers for P Nathan Eovaldi and minor league P JD McReynolds. Eovaldi did really well for us and we have him for next year as well based on his contract. Gordon wasn't a big loss based on what I can see so if Eovaldi can be a solid #3 pitcher for us next year like he was for his 13 games this season, I am good with this deal.
7/28/26- We traded minor league P Jonathan Santucci to the Tampa Bay Rays for P Kevin Kelly. I'm a bit torn on this one as Santucci seems like he could be pretty good but Kelly is a solid RP and is young enough to help us for a while. He's arbitration eligible and shouldn't cost much so I think this deal was a good one for both sides. Tampa brought Santucci up to the majors already and he didn't fare well....seems like he's not ready to me. We'll see how he develops before really rating this deal, but right now I'm good with it.
7/29/26- I was very interested to see if Stearns could pull off one more big deal to help us make a big push into the playoffs and then he came through with this complete stinker of a deal. We dealt minor league OF Edward Lantigua to the Reds for P Sam Moll. I have no idea why this deal was made. Lantigua is 20 years old and looks like he has some really good potential. Moll is, in a word, AWFUL! He's 34, he stunk in Cincy, he stunk with us (8 Ks and 7 BB!), he got sent down to AAA after no one claimed him on waivers on 8/31 (surprise, surprise!) and now I see we just signed him to an extension for next year worth 1.32 M!! What?? David and I need to have a talk about this one!

I'll go through injuries, awards and other related stuff next.

Keeping a close watch on him. He has under preformed so far, every start. He was dropped to the 5-man spot in the rotation. Might be his last start then getting moved to the bullpen.

We do have some trade proposals out, so let's see what happens...

Opening Day 2026

The first major move I've made as GM of the St. Louis Cardinals is to sign JJ Wetherholt to a 10-year, $102,600,000 contract. I'd like to see him become the club's best second baseman since The Rajah. He possesses rare all-around ability at the position, and I feel that this team is in dire need of a cornerstone player.

All of the Cardinals' impact players are hitters, in my opinion. Though catcher defense is purportedly not as impactful as it once was, I'm sticking Ivan Herrera and his 40-overall catcher defense at designated hitter for now. I've never been to St. Louis, but I saw shortstop Masyn Winn play down in Palm Beach a few years ago. By virtue of his defense, I think he'll stick around as a decent player. Outfielder Jordan Walker's future in St. Louis depends on his performance this season after two dire seasons with the bat (I saw him hit a monster home run to left center at Comerica Park last month.)

Though we're ranked as having the sixth-best farm system on Opening Day, I'm not that confident. Wetherholt will graduate. Pitcher Liam Doyle, the fifth pick last season and the #36 prospect in baseball, is rated as having control problems, which worries me. Many of our other "prospects" are 24-25 y/o JAGs.

The major benefit of sitting in this chair, thought, is that the fanbase is dying for a contender again, ownership is ready to spend, and there's not a single bad contract on the books. The only player guaranteed to be on the team next season is now Wetherholt! Dustin May, Ramon Urias and Ryne Stanek all have team options for 2027.

I'm excited for the opportunity to reshape the St. Louis Cardinals into the National League's model franchise. Matthew Liberatore takes the bump for Game 1...

Unfortunately, our streak ends at 2 :(
We are showing signs of life, but pitching keeps setting us back.
We are going to keep moving forward with our plan and see who sticks... who stays, who goes... Jake Irvin is getting pushed down in the rotation to get different match ups for him. See if it helps. We signed couple players to a minor league deal and seeing who can help. Our last game, our hitters went 39 for 13 and had 36 LOB... 12 walks and 13 Strikeouts.
As for pitching, Ryan Pepiot went 2.2 innings pitched with 7hits allowed, 6 earned runs, with 3walks and 4ks... WTF lol Our Relief Pitchers(4) gave up 11 H, 7 ER, 2 BBs and 11ks in 6.1 IP.

Im feeling like Alex Cora, they bout to cut my ass lol but player are starting to produce.
Offense has come to life.
Team got 21 hits in 49 ABs... It was a fight but we did and won.
Pitching continues to struggle
Jake Irvin giving up 8 runs in 3.2 innings and Will klein gave up 3 runs in 0.2 inning.

We need to figure out If Jake Irvin should continue or go. Hopefully he gets back on pace with last year's performance.
