I simmed ten seasons to give the league some history and I will take over the team with the worst record in that ten year timeframe.

The Northeast Baseball League was founded in 2000 and has teams located as north as Quebec City all the way south to Washington DC. Every state in the Northeast (including Maryland, Delaware and DC) as well as the provinces of Quebec and Ontario are represented in this league. There are 36 teams with two subdivisions, three divisions per subleague and six teams per division. A lot has happened in the ten years I’ve simmed so it’ll be good to run through that the best I can next.

From 2000-2009 there were nine teams who won a title, and only the Albany Firebirds can claim a second title after their impressive 4-1 NEBL championship series win over the Long Island Express to end last season. Parity has been a key to this league thus far and every year, we can expect many surprises. Let’s run through the Northern League first!

Northern League Frontier Division

The Frontier Division consists of three American teams and three Candian teams. The Ottawa Renegades have been the most consistent team in the division, making the playoffs from 2000-2007 and winning the inaugural 2000 NEBL title and losing the title in 2002 to the Atlantic City Aces.

The Maine Guides have also found success, making the playoffs in half of the first ten season of the league and winning the title in 2007. The New Hampshire Rock Cats have found some recent success and have also made the playoffs five times

Montrιal and Quebec City each have a playoff appearance but both Quebec teams have been beaten pretty badly by Ottawa, their cross province rival throughout the decade. The Burlington Black Bears round up the division as they are one of the few teams who’ve never sniffed the playoffs in their history. They’ve come a couple of games short in 2006, 2008 and 2009, but they’ve still yet to break through their drought.

Northern League Lakes Division

The Lakes Division also consists of an even split between Canadian and American teams but these are out by the Great Lakes. This is the only division in the league that does not have a championship winning team in it, both Buffalo and Toronto made the finals but lost.

The upstate NY trio of Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo have all had success, each making the playoffs 4-5 times in their history. The start of the league though was very memorable for how bad the Buffalo Chargers were. They lost 211 games in their first two seasons and there was a lot of talk in the Nickel City about the team’s futility. Luckily for them, the Chargers finally made the playoffs in 2006 and have made it every year since, while winning the division twice.

The Toronto Kingfishers have been the most successful of the three Canadian teams, making the playoffs five times and making a finals appearance once. The two other Toronto metro teams have not been as lucky. The Brampton Thunder have made the playoffs twice and the Hamilton Hammers have made the playoffs once in 2008. I think Hamilton has some talent that can compete soon, but Brampton has been in a long rebuild since 2003 that they’ve never truly gotten out of.


Northern League Patriot Division

The Patriot Division consists of southern New England and one surprise upstate NY team that is tough to categorize. The Boston Silvers and Albany Firebirds have completely dominated this division, with a combined 14 playoff appearances and nine of the ten division titles. Albany has been the more successful of the two, being the only team with two titles. Boston has had a ridiculous run though as they made the playoffs every year from 2000-2008 but missed them last year in a tight race. Sadly for them, they have no championships and have only made it to the NEBL championship once. The Ottawa Renegades had their number basically every year to start the league. From 2000-2004, they met every year in the playoffs and whil Boston won two series, two of the Ottawa wins were lost in the LCS. Just brutal, so that’s a big rivalry to watch,.

The Cape Cod Anglers and Worcester Huskies have had more recent success as both got their first playoff appearances in 2008 and 2009, and Cape Cod finally broke the division dominance of Albany and Boston in 2009.

Hartford and Providence are two of the four teams in the league’s history that have still not made the playoffs. Both teams have had their really bad stretches but they’ve also both come close in tight years but just could not overtake Boston or Albany. I think Hartford could get close one of these next couple years but it’s hard to imagine after all this time. Both were in consideration for me to take over but they still have not been as bad as the team I picked in the Southern League.

Los Angeles, CA -- In an unprecedent, Major League Baseball has announced that they will be pausing their 2028 season to allow professional baseball players to participate for the first time in the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad.

In a joint statement from MLB and the MLBPA, commissioner Rob Manfred said, “This is a something that the league and players have wanted for a long time. Along with the World Baseball Classic and the growth of the U18 tournament since 2027, we’ve seen baseball take great steps globally. And now, we’re going to have the best players in the world playing in the best tournament in the world.”

For the players to appear, Major League Baseball owners agreed to pause the season for two weeks, July 3rd - July 16th to accommodate the time needed for travel and games.

“This is a great show of cooperation between our league (MLB), the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), and the rest of the world. This will grow the game in tremendous ways.”

New York Yankees captain Aaron Judge, a member of the 2026 American team that won the World Baseball Classic, echoed the commissioner’s statement. “We believe in this. We believe in playing a best-on-best tournament, like our friends in the NHL and the NBA. We’ve seen the tremendous crowds for the World Cup in soccer. And being in the Olympics, building on the WBC, this is going to create excitement. These games, being held here in the US, will get kids watching all over the world.”

Judge, expected to be named captain of the squad, will have to wait a few weeks for the rest of the rosters to be revealed.

Live start, synced to July 3, 2026. Below is the roster, the money, and the three paths under consideration. I'm running this as an extreme "real-life" sim and am a very analytics/value driven GM. Annoyingly modern, I know.

Record

We all know the deal here. Finally hitting a downturn (43-46 as of July 3) after 10 straight winning seasons. 9 playoff appearances in 11 years. The weakness of the AL keeps this team in the post-season conversation for now, but this is a fragile group in terms of depth and health. As of today, the playoff odds are in the 20-25% range. I picked this organization because they're in such a fascinating spot right now and I want to be able to control the direction of the franchise over the second half of this decade. I play with OVR and POT off (all individual ratings trait/category ratings on, though).

2026 sits just under the first CBT line ($244M), which is very important to ownership. The drop from 2027 to 2028 is $86.6M - that's Walker, Javier, and other expirations all clearing at once.

The 2028 Problem

Money clears after the 2027 season, but so does quality and depth. Walker and Javier walk. Brown hits his final arb year and gets extremely expensive. Pena, if extended (again, unlikely), gets expensive. Correa and Altuve remain on the books and are impossible to move. Farm system is not deep enough (especially at the upper levels) to backfill for free. Net effect if nothing changes: same core, older, pricier, fewer internal replacements. In other words, big trouble looming.

Three Paths

A - Run It Back. No trades. Extend Pena (Boras client, so good luck). Pick up Paredes' option (he's arb-eligible for one more year regardless). Contend second half of 2026 and maybe 2027. Walk into the 2028 cliff as described above.

B - Sell Yordan High. Trade Alvarez. Surrenders $71.5M in BTV surplus value (the return threshold to break even). Clears $26.8M/year from 2027 on. Reinvest return into young talent timed to arrive around 2028 along with top system prospects like Xavier Neyens and Ethan Frey.

C - Partial Reset. Move Walker, decline/trade Paredes, move rental relievers (Okert, De Los Santos) and Trammell. Keep Alvarez, Brown, Pena. Net surplus given up: $11.6M ($26.6M surrendered in movable pieces, offset by $15M shed in Walker's underwater deal). Retools without touching the top of the roster.

23 of 30 teams within 4 games of a playoff spot as of July 1; means very few sellers. Available talent skews toward pitching (Skubal, Mize, Ryan, Peralta); bats are scarce. This favors selling a bat at a premium over selling an arm into a crowded market - relevant to Path B, since Alvarez could command a massive return.

Pena's market is thinner regardless - not many teams shopping for shortstops right now. May be a better sell in the offseason than at the deadline if we choose that path.

Since my daughter is a MIZZOU Tiger I thought it would be fun to run a dynasty with them. In the SEC, every weekend will be brutal facing the top talent in the nation. Both Mizzou and Kentucky have the lowest budgets in the SEC, so will be fun to see how things progress in Columbia. I will be leveraging AI/Claude for different reports, insights, etc.

The grinder every good team needs. Pettyjohn owns an 80-grade hit tool — the best pure bat-to-ball skill on the team — and almost never gives away an at-bat. A walk-on-turned-everyday-starter from tiny Macon, Missouri, he models his game on Dustin Pedroia: undersized, loud, and impossible to strike out. He coaches a youth travel team in the summers, shoots in the 70s on the golf course, and has led the team in hit-by-pitches three years running because he simply refuses to move.

MIKE MANS
DH · SR. · THE THUMPER
Missouri's designated masher and the highest-graded DH bat in the league. Mans is a patient, damage-doing right-handed hitter from St. Charles who finally gets to focus purely on hitting as a senior. A David Ortiz disciple down to the slow home-run trot, he runs the team's postgame barbecue — a competition-level pitmaster whose brisket has its own Instagram following — and is the clubhouse's resident hype man.

JASON BASS
CL · SO. · THE CLOSER
A young flamethrower with electric stuff and the occasional case of the yips. Bass missed bats at a near-elite rate as a freshman (75 stuff grade) but walks more hitters than the staff would like — a classic high-ceiling, high-variance closer. From Springfield, he comes out of the pen to his own hand-mixed walk-up track (he DJs under a name no one is allowed to print) and has an elaborate, slightly superstitious routine on the mound. When he's on, the ninth inning is over before it starts.

RUSTY STEWART
C · FR. · BAT-FIRST BACKSTOP
A true freshman thrown into the SEC fire. Stewart can flat-out hit — an 80 gap-power grade jumps off the page — but the receiving and throwing are very much freshman-grade, and how fast he develops behind the plate may decide how steady the pitching staff feels. A farm kid from Sedalia who grew up catching his older brothers in the backyard, he's a Yadier Molina obsessive trying to grow into the defensive half of the comparison.

STRENGTHS, WEAKNESSES & CHALLENGES

Strengths

Premium up-the-middle talent Few clubs in the country can match an A-graded shortstop (Ballard), A-graded second baseman (Pettyjohn) and A-graded center fielder (Bickel). Production at the spots that are hardest to fill is the roster's calling card.

A patient, on-base lineup Ballard (75), Bickel (85) and Mans (60) headline a disciplined group that drives counts and draws walks. Against SEC arms, the Tigers' ability to grind at-bats and steal free bases is a real equalizer.

A true Friday ace Will Olson (97–99) can match any No. 1 starter in the league. A staff with a legitimate horse can steal series openers and reset a tough weekend, and Olson gives Missouri a puncher's chance every Friday.

Veteran, battle-tested core Ballard, Pettyjohn, Olson, Mans, Coffelt, Dunson and Brock are all seniors. This is an old, even-keeled roster that has taken the league's best punch before and won't be rattled by the road environments ahead.

Weaknesses

Light at the corners First base (C+) and third base (B-) don't provide the over-the-fence thump SEC contenders usually carry. The offense is gap-to-gap, not three-run-homer; cold streaks can get quiet in a hurry.
Raw gloves where it matters Freshman catcher Rusty Stewart (35 defense) and center fielder Matt Bickel (25 defense) are bat-first and still developing. Premium-position defense behind a thin staff is a risky combination.

Top-heavy rotation After Olson and high-upside freshman Ken Goins, it's a steep drop to finesse arms Todd Brock (89–91) and Ernie Hyland (86–88). Saturdays and Sundays are where the schedule will squeeze Missouri hardest.

Bullpen command Closer Jason Bass misses bats but issues too many free passes (45 control), and the relief corps leans on velocity over polish — pinpoint lefty Eric Marion (80 control) aside. Tight SEC games will test the margins.

Key Challenges

1. Surviving the SEC gauntlet — projected 11th in a league where 14 of 16 teams rank top-30 nationally. Simply reaching .500 in conference play is a genuine accomplishment.
2. Winning the days Olson doesn't pitch. With a thin rotation, Missouri must scratch out Saturday and Sunday wins behind a freshman and a pair of soft-tossers.
3. Developing three key freshmen — Bickel, Goins and Stewart — on the fly, under fire, in the most demanding conference in the country.
4. Manufacturing runs without power. The Tigers have to run, walk and defend cleanly to win — which puts pressure on the very up-the-middle gloves that are still rounding into form.

BOTTOM LINE
The realistic projection is a 22–23 conference record across the 45-game SEC slate, a tidy 13–2 out of conference, and an overall mark of roughly 35–25 — good for an at-large NCAA Regional bid, most likely a 2- or 3-seed shipped somewhere warm rather than a national host. The ceiling is higher than the seed suggests: a healthy Olson, a locked-in Ballard and a lineup that refuses to give away at-bats is exactly the profile that wins a Regional game or two and ruins a host's weekend. The floor is the bubble — if the corner bats stay quiet and the rotation depth cracks, an 11th-place SEC club can slide from 'in' to 'first four out' in a single bad May. Either way, Missouri is a team nobody in the bracket will want to draw.
