Analysis

The 14th week of the season featured quite a lot of movement from the top to the bottom. With 2/3 of the season now done, the playoff spots are starting to see some haves versus have nots.

Goodneighbor (#1) returned to the top spot after dropping a spot last week. The Hancocks started the week well, outscoring Oberland (#20) 18-1 in the two-game series. However, the boys in orange dropped 2 of 3 to Warwick (#16) on the weekend. Despite the "down" week, Goodneighbor still holds a one-game lead over the Party Boys for the CBO's top record.

FHE (#2) is the hottest team in the CBO and now in a first-place tie in the Railroad League with Vault 81 (#6). The Yao Guai used dominant pitching in going 5-0, winning by scores of 2-1 and 8-1 over Atom (#21) and then completing their sweep of Roxbury (#23) in a week where they were supposed to win all five.

Nordhagen Beach (#3) remained in the third spot with a 3-2 week. They whipped up on the blue cold Adamantium (#14) with a 12-2 advantage but dropped 2 of 3 at home to their usual whipping bags, County Crossing (#19).

Fort Hagen (#4) dropped from the top spot this week after a 2-3 week. The Silver Shroud started the week by dropping two at home to Easy Town (#8). Then they won the first two against Sunshine Tidings (#22) before dropping the Sunday game.

Concord (#5) jumped four spots to claim the last spot in the Top 5. By going 4-1 on the week, the Radstags sit at three games behind the Shroud in the Institute League. Concord downed Salem (#9) in two games and then beat Lexington (#17) in the last two games of the series.

Quincy (#18) was the biggest faller, down seven spots, after going 0-5 to extend their losing streak to seven games. The Gunners dropped their two to Egret (#10) at home before losing all three at the Cat's garage.

Team Power Rankings

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1635995367

Analysis

And the final stretch begins as teams have just 30 games to go on the season. Before discussing the BNN rankings, we want to point out that we see eight teams still realistically alive in the NCA and six in the SCA. See the end for who is currently in and what we think will happen in the final 30 in the last six weeks.

Concord (#1) is in new ground, earning their first-ever #1 ranking in CBO history. They have won 7 straight and 9 of 10 to jump Fort Hagen (#8) for the Institute League lead. The Radstags handled Easy Town (#7) and Lexington (#19) in a five-game road sweep.

Goodneighbor (#2) is still the CBO’s best team, record wise, but the hot Stags drop them down a notch. The Hancocks did not have a great week, going 2-3, with a sweep loss to Diamond City (#6, 5-0 this week) and a 2 out of 3 weekend over

Vault 81 (#3) also jumped up in the rankings thanks to a 4-1 week, with just a Sunday loss against Oberland (#16). Otherwise, the Dwellers beat up on Quincy (#17) and won the first two over the T-51s.

Nordhagen Beach (#4) is still the top team in the North Charles but dropped because of a 2-3 week. After splitting the series at Sunshine Tidings (#22), the Party Boys dropped two of three against the NCA’s bottom team, Finch Farm (#23).

Jamaica Plain (#5) slipped into the Top 5 after Fort Hagen’s (#8) drop. The Red Rockets moved up one spot despite only a 3-2 week. With a split at Roxbury (#24) and winning 2 of 3 at Warwick (#18), the Rockets are in a solid 2nd place spot in the Minutemen League.

FHE (#12) plummeted from their great rise with a week just the opposite of what they had been doing. In other words, the Yao Guai could not buy a win this week, the only CBO team to lose every game this week.

Current playoff rankings in the NCA:
1. Nordhagen Beach (BL)
2. Concord (IL)
3. Fort Hagen (IL)
4. Easy Town (BL)
5. Salem (BL)

Realistically alive:
1. Starlight (IL) – 1 GB of wildcard
2. The Slog (BL) – 1 GB of wildcard
3. Abernathy (IL) – 3 GB of wildcard

Doubtfully alive:
1. Lexington (IL) – 5 GB of wildcard

No chance:
1. Finch Farm (BL) – 15 GB of wildcard
2. Sunshine Tidings (IL) – 13 GB of wildcard
3. County Crossing (BL) – 7 GB of wildcard

Current playoff rankings in the SCA:
1. Goodneighbor (ML)
2. Vault 81 (RL)
3. Jamaica Plain (ML)
4. Diamond City (RL)
5. FHE (RL)

Realistically alive:
1. Egret (RL) – 2 GB of wildcard

Doubtfully alive:
1. Quincy (ML) – 4 GB of wildcard
2. University Point (ML) – 4 GB of wildcard
3. Oberland (ML) – 6 GB of wildcard
4. Warwick (ML) – 8 GB of wildcard

No chance:
1. Atom (ML) – 11 GB of wildcard
2. Roxbury (RL) – 15 GB of wildcard

I'm not a bandwagoner, I swear, but the Radstags rising up the rankings are least providing some drama and making our favorites actually have to fight for it.

ayaghmour2 11-04-2021 02:37 PM

Lot of good races as the season gets closer to the end. No division leader leading by more then five should make for an exciting finish!

I'm rooting for the Stags to at least make the playoffs since they have never been there. They have not been County Crossing bad in their history, but all but one year they have finished at or one place away from last.

Teams to never make the playoffs:
Concord - Highest finish in their league: 3rd
County Crossing - 6th
Jamaica Plain - 3rd
Roxbury - 3rd
Salem - 3rd
Sunshine Tidings - 3rd
University Point - 4th

You've probably addressed this, and I recall the answer being "no", but I'm going to ask again because I think it might have changed since I originally asked, but do you edit the field dimensions for any teams? It's sort of a related question, as sometimes I wonder if field dimensions can have an effect on success, or at least anecdotal evidence from some of my saves might suggest it does though I don't have enough "proof" to really say one way or the other so I'm more or less just at the level of being "curious".

The only two I recall were the Great Green Jewel (Diamond City and obviously since it is Fenway Park) and Valentine Detective Agency Field (Starlight).

State of Affairs

Now that we are in the final month (season end on 2 September), we can take a look at what we know, what we think we know, and what we do not know.

What we know:

The 50-win teams are going to make the playoffs. No, none of them have clinched a spot. However, unless any of those teams both collapse and a team currently on the outside gets really hot, they are going to be in.

Goodneighbor and Nordhagen Beach both stay consistent with occasional low spots. For example, both are 5-5 in their last 10. That gives Concord and Vault 81 current opportunities to seize the #1 seed in their associations.

FHE's Joe Rathmann is on the most direct path to the CBO Player of the Year award. The former Goodneighbor reject has emerged in the last couple of years as a full on star. His 7.0 WAR is far and away the CBO's best. Even with other players having good seasons--Oren Gep, Ben Pawlak, Aesed Hayjen, Tom Jones, Barker Cocoa, and Biter Trout, to name a few--Rathmann has been tearing up the league with hits, walks, and stolen bases, becoming a run-producing machine.

Roxbury's Beachboy Nut is going to lead his team to success one day. One the CBO's worst team with other stars waiting in the wings, Nut is 12-6 with a 2.26 ERA in 21 games started heading into the last month. His 12 wins represent 42.9% of the Rad Sox's victories on the season.

What we think we know:

Speaking of good seasons, Diamond City's Oren Gep looks to be the 2300 home run champion. Not only that, but the defending champions have nudged their way back into relevance after having a rough first half of the season, mainly because of an 8-14 May. Gep is helping a poor hitting-great pitching team stay in contention, leading the Swatters in the team Triple Crown (.361/33/75).

Nordhagen Beach is going to be tough to beat at any level. They hit, they pitch, they defend. No game is an easy one against the Party Boys, and no team in the North Charles Association can get past them without a fight. Tommy Beach (6-2, 2.55) is close to coming back from his injury rehabilitation. Then it is probably all go for the Boys.

What we don't know:

Easy Town seems to be a contender and sit just three back of the Party Boys, but their big trade before the deadline has gone boom. Looking to better their 8th-best Starters and Bullpen ERA, the Assaultrons went out and got outstanding pitcher Quentin Malone from the University Point Deathclaws. In just his second start with his new team, though, Malone tore his rotator cuff, ending his 2300 season. It was a big blow to the championship pursuits in Easy Town.

Nuka News Update

All the news you need about Bradberton and Nuka World

by Evan Guy

4 August 2300

Nukaworld Drowned in Quantum

It's a Quantum day, and Quantum Nukalurks and Quantum Nukalurks B president Lizzie Wyath is celebrating in style.

"Quantum and vodka," she slurred. "I don't plan to wake up until Wednesday."

The A team overcame a 3-2 deficit against the Cherry Ghoulrillas to take the series four games to three in the second ever Nuka Series. 3B Com Slurp, traded to the Nukalurks in the winter from the Warwick Mirelurks, lurked in the starpen all series, capturing the MVP. Slurp was 15 for 33 (.455) with a homer and five RBI. RP Mike Burkhead won games 3 and 4 and followed that up with a save in Game 6.

To top it off, the B squad took it to the Wild B Gatorclaws, four games to two to capture the Nuka B Series. RF Godzilla Oddball was named the MVP of the series after going 10 for 20 (.500) with an RBI. Teammate CF Kell Leek may have been the true MVP, going 7 for 23 (.304) with a home run and nine RBI. SP Greenhouse Caceres went 2-0, winning games 3 and 6 to lead his team to victory.

Featured Series:

Tue 31 July – Concord 9 at Nordhagen Beach 5
With left fielder Dan Erb leading the charge, the Concord Radstags defeated the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, 9-5, at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium. Erb, who is tied for 7th in the NCA in runs scored with 61, was 1 for 3 with a home run and 2 walks. He scored 2 times and drove in 2. Concord has run its win streak to 4 in a row.

The most important at-bat for Concord came in the top of the ninth inning, when right fielder Gene Leftswipe stroked a 1-2 slider to center for a run-scoring triple, putting Concord up, 6-5.

"We'd like to put some distance between ourselves and the rest of the division," said Leftswipe.

Wed 1 August - Concord 6 at Nordhagen Beach 8
Dustin Mart made an impact in the 8-6 Nordhagen Beach win over Concord. Mart, who is tied for 6th in the NCA in total bases with 181, went 2 for 4 with 2 home runs, while adding 6 RBI and scoring twice. With the win, Nordhagen Beach raised its record to 53-32.

Mart had a game-changing home run in the bottom of the eighth. On a full count fastball from Freedom Williams, he banged a 3-run home run to right, giving the Party Boys a 8-6 lead. It was the 25th home run of the year for Mart.

"It wasn't our best performance," said Mart, "but a win in this league is nothing to sniff at."

Team Power Rankings

Analysis

There are three teams that have yet to lose a game in August. One is at the bottom of its league in Atom (#17), moving itself into a position to escape the bottom spot in the Minutemen League.

The other two occupy the #1 and #2 spots in this week's Power Rankings. Those teams also happen to be league mates in the Brotherhood League trailing the team tied for the top record in the CBO, the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys (#5).

Currently on a seven-game winning streak, the Easy Town Assaultrons (#1) are just one game back of Nordhagen Beach. The Assaultrons were lucky to get both Sunshine Tidings (#22) and County Crossing (#21) this week.

Salem is #2, pushing its way through Starlight (#15) and Finch Farm (#23), helping to eliminate the Four Leafs from playoff contention in the process. The Witch Hats have now distanced themselves in the playoff race with just 20 games to play.

Concord (#3) is still hanging on atop the Institute League, two games up on Fort Hagen (#7). The Radstags did not have a great week, going 3-2 with a split against the Boys and a two-win weekend against the Chemists.

Vault 81 (#4) occupies the top place in the SCA, going 4-1 on the week. The Dwellers topped Warwick (#18) in two games and won the first two games against FHE (#11) before dropping the Sunday finale. Vault 81 is now just one game back of the #1 spot in the SCA behind Goodneighbor (#6).

The Boys (#5) round out the Top 5 despite hanging on to the top seed in the NCA. That includes their split in the battle of #1 teams in the NCA and then losing 2 out of 3 at The Slog (#12), including an 11-inning walk-off.

Current playoff rankings in the NCA:
1. Nordhagen Beach (BL)

Featured Series:

Fri 10 August – Nordhagen Beach 4 at Easy Town 11
The Easy Town Assaultrons topped the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, 11-4, in North Charles Association action at Easy Town Field. The standout performance belonged to Easy Town pitcher and Littleton, Massachusetts, native William Radwater. The win boosted Easy Town to 56-35, tied for 1st place with the Boys.

Adam Henderson was 1 for 4 with a walk, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once for Easy Town. The 23-year old catcher had a key at-bat in the bottom of the third. With two out and the bases loaded, he broke a 1-1 tie with a run-scoring walk off Julian Shed. It was his 35th walk of the season.

"Nice to see our side come away with the win," Radwater said after the game.

Sat 11 August - Nordhagen Beach 8 at Easy Town 7, 16 inn
The Nordhagen Beach Party Boys withstood an impressive performance by Easy Town left fielder Jarrett Metalbox to defeat the Assaultrons, 8-7, at Easy Town Field. Metalbox was 4 for 8 with a triple, a double, and 2 singles, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. Nordhagen Beach now has a record of 57-35 with the win.

It could have been a different outcome for Nordhagen Beach, had it not been for Mike Swift, the 22-year old catcher . Swift contributed a run-scoring walk in the top of the 16th inning to put Nordhagen Beach up, 8-7.

"I like the grit of this ballclub," Swift said.

Sun 12 August - Nordhagen Beach 4 at Easy Town 11
The Easy Town Assaultrons beat the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, 6-5. Easy Town pitcher and Longmeadow, Massachusetts, native David Hill led the way. Reliever Jame Functionary picked up the win. His record improves to 1-0. Tommy Beach took the loss. The Assaultrons bumped their record to 57-36 with this latest triumph.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Adam Henderson contributed a big hit for the Assaultrons. With Easy Town trailing 2-1, he hammered a solo home run.

"We had the game right there for the taking," said Nordhagen Beach manager Matt Ballhawk Getman. "But we decided not to take it."

Team Power Rankings

Analysis

The North Charles Association has become interesting as we cruise into the last three weeks of the regular season. There are now two league ties and a tie for the first-ever wildcard spot. On the other side of the Charles, league leaders Goodneighbor (#2) and Vault 81 (#3) could see their leagues wrapped up this week if everything goes right.

Instead of taking on the full Power Rankings in order, let us look at the NCA race. First off, the Easy Town Assaultrons (#1) have now tied Nordhagen Beach (#6) for the Brotherhood League and NCA lead. The Party Boys clinched the season series, 7 games to 5, on Saturday when they edged the Trons in 16 innings. Despite losing 2 of 3, Nordhagen Beach has the advantage over the Trons and would host a one-game playoff for the #1 seed should the league finish in a tie.

With that stated, at 9-1 in their last 10, the Assaultrons are looking like the behemoths of the wastes right now. Despite the devastating loss of Quentin Malone and the overall unimpressive pitching, the Trons are hitting the cover off the ball. They are both a CBO best 8-1 in August and 20-8 since the All-Star Break, showing they are hot at the right time.

In the Institute League, Fort Hagen (#4) was down but not out. Like Nordhagen Beach over Easy Town, the Silver Shroud has already clinched the season series over Concord (#7). Only, the Shroud have dominated, winning 10 of 12 of the games they have played on the season. Moreso that the Trons, Fort Hagen truly is an offensive machine, leading the NCA in every offensive category except homers (4th) and stolen bases (3rd).

The Radstags are suddenly beginning to struggle, winning only one game at home in the weekend series with the Shroud and splitting the midweek slate with County Crossing (#17). The Stags are only 4-4 so far in August, and that has to give pause to a team that has never made it to the postseason.

One week after winning them all, Salem (#11) lost them all, including being swept at home on the weekend by The Slog (#5). That sweep by the Ghouls not only tied them for the wildcard spot, but gave them a 7-5 season series victory over the Hats. The Slog now would go to the playoffs if they started today (and we ignored the game tie-breaker rule). With that stated, The Slog has now won seven straight and look to be what many expected them to be, a tough team able to beat any team at any time.

The Hancocks hold the #1 record in the CBO and probably should be the favorite to win the Sole Survivor Series in 2300, though we have tended to think the NCA will win it. Goodneighbor went 4-1 on the week, splitting with FHE (#14) and then sweeping Quincy (#13).

The Dwellers are the quietest league leader in the CBO, but they are still very good. They went 3-2, but the most important of that was winning 2 of 3 at 2nd-place Diamond City (#10). Vault 81 now needs any combination of 5-10 wins and 5-10 Diamond City losses to clinch the Railroad League. Not too bad for a team that needed a play-in game to make their first playoff appearance last season.

Current playoff rankings in the NCA:
1. Nordhagen Beach (BL) - Wins tie breaker over Easy Town (head-to-head)
2. Fort Hagen (IL) - Wins tie breaker over Concord (head-to-head)
3. Easy Town (BL)
4. Concord (IL)
5. The Slog (BL) - Wins tie breaker over Salem (head-to-head)

Realistically alive:
1. Salem (BL) – 0 GB of wildcard
2. Starlight (IL) – 3 GB of wildcard

Doubtfully alive:

Even though it's the usual suspects, I must say, I have a feeling the playoffs are gonna be good this year though. Yeah, the participants may not be a surprise, but with everyone in good form, it means we get to see our favorites at their best, a fair fight, really.

This is the first year where I don't feel like one team is definitely going to win it all. I have not always been right about my thought, but who exactly is dominant this season?

Fort Hagen may actually be the best team, but they don't win as many games as they should. Perhaps a slight spoiler since I simmed ahead to the next week, but Nordhagen Beach and the Shroud "should" be tied for the best record in the CBO right now, according to PAM. Goodneighbor and Vault 81 "should" be tied for the next best record, three games back of the Boys and Shroud.

Yeah, our favorites are on top, but it really is a broad pack that's on top. No one team is really standing out spectacularly, other than singular moments here and there, which is perhaps why I'm having more trouble than usual finding anything productive to comment on. I think once the actual playoff lineups are set that'll change though.

Featured Series:

Fri 17 August – Goodneighbor 10 at Jamaica Plain 8
A good performance from left fielder Bobby Hughey helped the Goodneighbor Hancocks defeat the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets, 10-8. Hughey went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk. He scored 3 times and drove in 2 for the Hancocks. The winning pitcher was Quincy Eloquent. He tossed 142 pitches over 8.1 innings, allowing 7 runs on 12 hits. Earning the save was Matt Lambda. He's now cashed in 1 of 2 save opportunities.

It could have been a different outcome for Goodneighbor, had it not been for Good Don Duck, the two-time Corvega Top Defender Award winner . Duck contributed a run-scoring ground out in the top of the second inning to put Goodneighbor up, 2-0.

"It's always a heck of a lot easier to get to sleep after a win," Hughey told the Goodneighbor Gazette. "I know I'll rest easy tonight."

The win elevated the Hancocks to 60-36.

Sat 18 August - Goodneighbor 3 at Jamaica Plain 6
A good performance from first baseman Cody Flatt helped the Jamaica Plain Red Rockets defeat the Goodneighbor Hancocks, 6-3. Flatt hit 2 home runs, while scoring 3 runs and driving in 4 for the Red Rockets. Doug Dee El was credited with the save, his 25th in 28 tries. Jamaica Plain now has a record of 53-44 with the win.

Flatt contributed a big hit, a 2-run home run, for Jamaica Plain in the bottom of the first. With his team trailing 1-0, Flatt took a curveball from Oscar Chekhemani and stroked the home run to right. His 31st home run of the season allowed the Red Rockets to leap in front, 2-1.

"The team always comes first, so pulling out the win on a day like today is the most important thing," Flatt told a reporter while responding to autograph requests. "Our fans like to come out to see a win, so I'm happy to do what I can to give them that."

Sun 19 August - Goodneighbor 1 at Jamaica Plain 7
Jamaica Plain Red Rockets starter Digger Vadim was on his game, helping his team beat the Goodneighbor Hancocks, 7-1. Vadim picked up the win for Jamaica Plain, going 8.2 innings. He gave up 1 run on 4 hits. He now sports a record of 14-7. The win elevated the Red Rockets to 54-44.

An important at-bat for the Red Rockets came in the bottom of the fourth, when third baseman Mike Van Noord stroked a 3-run home run. That made the score 3-1 in favor of Jamaica Plain. For the day, Van Noord went 1 for 4 with a home run, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once.

"Digger made his pitches," said Jamaica Plain manager Mark Sellsword.
