Neal Clifford, 1930's/40's catcher. Interesting to see him in a Reds uniform. Maybe he had a spring invite or served as a bullpen catcher.

Here's another photo of Conrad Flippen. This one shows his face a bit better. Flippen was a shortstop on the Chicago White Sox spring roster in 1934.
Conrad Flippen was considered one of the top two high school athletes in Arizona in the first half of the 20th century. He excelled at many sports -- baseball, football, basketball, and track. |

Dennis Waite, 1960 Cardinals spring training. BR has him listed as Frank Waite, but he apparently went by his middle name, at least according to the photographer.

An interesting story goes with Dennis Waite. (And yes, the newspapers were calling him Dennis Waite when the Cardinals were demoting him back to the minors from spring training in 1960).
An AP report which appeared in the Rapid City Journal of January 4, 1960, among other newspapers, told of how the San Francisco Giants intended to pick up Dennis Waite from the Cardinals, but mistakenly took his older brother, Powell D. Waite. It was during the winter meetings which began in November, 1959. The Giants, acting for their Class C Fresno Giants, drafted Powell Waite from the Cardinals' Daytona Beach Islanders for $3,000. Frank Dennis Waite had been with Daytona Beach, but he had been shifted to the St. Louis Cardinals 40-man roster on October 12 to protect him from the draft. Once Dennis had been moved up to St. Louis, Powell had been transferred from Wytheville to the Daytona Beach roster to fill the empty space. When the Giants figured out their mistake, they could have un-done the deal, but since it was their fault, they just swallowed it as it had taken place. The Cardinals hadn't meant to deceive anyone. It was all simply a mistake. |
