Sunshine Tidings has shown improvement, barely missing the playoffs last year after finishing last or nearly last every other season of the full CBO. They lost the 2nd-place tiebreaker to the Lady Killers last year for the last playoff spot.

I'm not sure there is anything special about them, but rookie Baktu DaWell, who was a monster in the BYDL but not projected to be great, has been lights out so far. I actually cannot figure that one out in my analysis of the OOTP engine. He hit 37 home runs with Wattz his only season in the formed BYDL. He got drafted 2nd overall, though scouts projected him to be drafted lower. And he hit 39 homers last season with Rocky Narrows in the GBRL. Yet OSA does not see greatness in him. I think I must have bumped up his potential because I thought it was crazy that he was putting up monster numbers and not getting any respect. He is currently a 26 overall but has 6 homers and 18 RBI while batting .338 in 18 starts.

You know, now would be the time, with Spring Training IRL, but I really should check if the projections IRL are any better than OOTP's in game projects, because I always, always, always find OOTP is just terrible at preseason projections. Granted, I'm not saying it's an unrealistic game. Oh no, I think it models strength quite well... just the numbers it puts out when it's giving you what it claims is going to be a prediction are always just the worst.

Eden Meadows

Grognak the Barbarian, The Inspector, Manta Man, Mistress of Mystery, and the Silver Shroud vroom across the screen. Dr. Brainwash and his army of De-Capitalists blast their commie weapons at the heroes in costume. The scene is intense as The Inspector is overwhelmed before Grognak vanquishes the foes with his axe.

The fog is light, allowing viewers to visit vending booths to chew on their popmaize and swig from the Captain's Blend and view the silver screen to watch the Unstoppables become heroes of the night on Mount Desert Island. The settlement of Eden Meadows, once a large drive-in theater, is now a bustling settlement of Harbormen, synths, settlers from the Commonwealth, and former tenants of the Church of the Children of Atom.

Eden Meadows Cinema before the repairs

The biggest draw to the area, of course, is the theater. People from other settlements on the island make large booking for space where they set up tents and spend sometimes days watching all the offerings at the dual screens of Eden Meadows. The latest release as part of the HCU universe is the first Unstoppables movie, Unstoppables I: Dr. Brainwash and His Army of De-Capitalists. It is the first feature-length viewing of the HCU and has followed 10 shows starring different HCU characters.

The 11 total video offerings play on loop with some other films from present and before the Great War. For the HCU, the following have been released since the first show in November of 2297:

Silver Shroud: No Nose - now called Season 0
Grognak the Barbarian Season 1: In the Lair of the Virgin Eater
Vault Boy Season 1: Underground Life
Mistress of Mystery Season 1: The Boston Killer
The Inspector Season 1: Killer at Kiddie Kingdom
The Adventures of Captain Cosmos Season 1: The Legendary Run
Silver Shroud Season 1: The Mechanist
Manta Man Season 1: Voyages of the Deep
Drake Tungsten, Chrono Cowboy Season 1: High Noon at Dry Rock Gulch
Grognak the Barbarian Season 2: The Ruby Ruins

Eden Meadows has vowed to be the one-stop area of Mount Desert Island for the biggest entertainment names. Pre-War stars Gilda Broscoe and Keith McKinney have visited for viewings and venues for some of the showings of their movies, including one in which they starred together, Empire on the Nile.

The cast of the Unstoppables has also made several appearances at HCU-sponsored events at Eden Meadows. Outside of Starlight in the Boston area, Eden Meadows has become the voice of cinema in the Northeast.

BNN Weekly Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

Feature Story: Defending Champs Clawing Way to the Top

There was little doubt that the talented defending champions, the University Point Deathclaws, was a talented bunch. What has been surprising is that they are pulling away from the rest of the Minutemen League early in the 2303 season. One major reason is their ability to score runs via the long ball.

The Lead: 53 HR

With their 53 home runs, the Deathclaws lead the CBO in home runs with the next best being Vault 81 with 47. Warwick is next with 44 and the NCA's most powerful team is Sunshine Tidings with 43.

The two leaders in jacking up the Claws' power numbers are their two biggest stars in RF Tomas Jones (.378/10/27) and 1B Barker Cocoa (.336/9/18). While he has struggled to hit well this season, SS Austin Engill (.202/8/14) has contributed to the home run totals. In fact, the 27 combined home runs for those three players is more than four teams' totals: Egret (19), Fort Hagen (23), Lexington (26), and Oberland (26).

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1680441223

University Point's starting eight have all hit at least three home runs, including eight-hitter CF Jukebox Luttrell who hit a career-low eight homers in 2302. His three home runs give him 120 for his career. LF Kory Richardson (.149/4/15) has had the poorest start to his career, much lower than what he produced in 2302 with .236/26/67. If his average and power bounces back, then the Claws will be in even better shape. Three backups have combined to hit eight more home runs in SS Chris Recore (.421/3/8), LF Bill Chaney (.316/2/6), and C Hope Scrapper (.462/2/5).

News and Notes: This year's hitter race for the Red Rocket Rookie Awards looks to be a great one with some exciting players making their debuts this season. The leaders in the NCA and SCA are RF Baktu DaWell (Sunshine Tidings) and 1B Homestay Lovetap (Warwick), respectively. DaWell has a .306/.410/.576 line with six homers, 15 RBI, and 19 runs. He leads the CBO rookies in batting average and OBP, and he leads the NCA rookies in those two categories, home runs, RBI, SLG, OPS, WAR, runs, total bases, extra-base hits, ISO, OPS+, WPA, and wOBA. Lovetap has a line of .287/.405/.653 with 11 home runs, 22 RBI, and 22 runs scored. He leads CBO rookies in home runs, RBI, SLG, OPS, WAR, runs, total bases, walks, extra-base hits, ISO, OPS+, WPA, and wOBA. Other rookies that have stood out so far include SS Father Franetzki (The Slog, .306, 12 RBI, 12 R, 2 SB), CF Camp Costello (The Slog, .256, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 6 R, 1 SB), C Silvam Fourteen (The Slog, .233, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 9 R), RF Chris Knickerbocker (Fort Hagen, .290, 1 HR, 14 RBI, 6 R), RF Cansit Kellogg (Abernathy, .316, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 7 R), RF Rick Pickle (Egret, .252, 9 RBI, 9 R, 32 hits), and RF Gin Kwon (Warwick, .232, 5 HR, 14 RBI, 11 R). The only rookie pitcher in discussion for the Red Rocket Rookie Award is FHE's SP Taco Lavergne (4-2, 2.96, 8 GS, 4 QS, 48.2 IP, 25 BB, 25 K).

Analysis

University Point (#2) as featured above has taken its lone blemishes in May (back-to-back shutouts at the hands of #1 Roxbury) to win eight-straight games and move up a spot in the Power Rankings. Those two losses (8-0, 9-0) were followed by sweeps of Warwick (#24), Oberland (#20), and Quincy (#21), giving the Claws a 6-0 start in Minutemen League play.

Speaking of Roxbury, the Rad Sox have boosted themselves to the best record in the CBO at 25-7. Like the Deathclaws, the Sox have gone 8-2 in their last 10. After sweeping University Point, the Rad Sox won 2 of 3 over a hot Vault 81 (#7) team, swept the Mirelurks and then won 2 of 3 at the T-51s.

County Crossing is at #3 after having their first struggles in a 10-game stretch, going 5-5. The Bloodbugs, who still lead the Brotherhood League by 7 games over Nordhagen Beach (#6), was able to win only one series in their last four. County Crossing split with Abernathy (#15), lost 2 of 3 at home against the Party Boys, split with Sunshine Tidings, and then won 2 of 3 at The Slog (#22).

FHE remains at #4 with its Railroad League rival, the Diamond City Swatters taking up the 5th spot. For the Yao Guai, that 4-spot is thanks to a 7-3 stretch in their last 10. The Yao Guai swept Goodneighbor (#10), won 2 of 3 over Egret (#23), split at Jamaica Plain (#18), and then won 2 of 3 at the Ninjas.

The Swatters moved up despite going only 4-6 in their last 10. Those include a split with the Cats (#13), losing 2 of 3 at home versus Oberland, splitting at the Gunners, and then losing 2 of 3 at the Dwellers.

Vault 81 (#7), Sunshine Tidings (#8), and Fort Hagen (#9) all made big leaps up, while Atom (#13), Abernathy (#15), and Finch Farm (#19) made the biggest drops.

BNN Weekly Report

This Week in the CBO, BMU, and GBRL

by Nat Wright-Kawolski

1 June 2303

Feature Story: Who Wants the IL?

In three of the four CBO leagues, the first-place team leads the second-place team but five games or more. In the Institute League, however, the last-place team trails by four games.

Fort Hagen currently leads the IL with a 23-19 record, two games better than Concord. Abernathy, Lexington, and Starlight fall in next, all three games behind, and the Sunshine Tidings Chemists are the one team at 19-23. That leads to our feature story question, who wants the IL?

The lead: Ups and Downs and Wait a Minute . . .

When looking at only the runs for vs runs against situation, there are interesting and perhaps misleading numbers. For example, let's look at the numbers of the six teams in the IL and their overall runs rank with the lower numbers being better--'2' is the lowest possible runs sum.

Abernathy - 187 RS (6th), 224 RA (11th), -37 RD, Runs Sum (17)
Concord - 169 RS (11th), 171 RA (3rd), -2 RD, Runs Sum (14)
Fort Hagen - 173 RS (T-9th), 174 RA (4th), +1 RD, Runs Sum (13)
Lexington - 176 RS (8th), 181 RA (7th), -5 RD, Runs Sum (15)
Starlight - 201 RS (3rd), 215 RA (10th), -14 RD, Runs Sum (13)
Sunshine Tidings - 184 RS (7th), 170 RA (4th), +14 RD, Runs Sum (11)

By these numbers, the Chemists should be the top team, followed by the Silver Shroud, Lady Killers, Radstags, Synths, and Adamantium. But Sunshine Tidings is in last place? And it just does not make sense.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1680887115

Based on the numbers, it would look as though the Chemists just cannot pull out one-run games, but they are actually not that bad at 5-7 overall. Then again, a run here and there could make all the different. For example, Abernathy is 7-5 in one-run games, a two-game swing over the Chemists. Likewise, Concord (8-6), the Shroud (10-5), and Lexington (8-8) are all at .500 or above in close games. Only the Killers (3-5) are similar to Sunshine Tidings.

Sunshine Tidings is also the coldest team in the IL, only matching Nordhagen Beach of the Brotherhood League and Warwick of the Minutemen League in the last 10 games for futility at 2-8. Abernathy (4-6) is the only other IL team in the last 10 to suffer a losing record.

Therefore, the answer very well may be Sunshine Tidings for who will take the IL in 2303. But what about Fort Hagen? The Silver Shroud currently lead the league and have been a consistent playoff team, including winning the IL in each of the 2299, 2300, and 2302 seasons.

The Shroud are also the most banged up team in the IL with three star players currently on the injured list: SP Mike Cartrette (2-0, 2.45), 2B Mark Miller (.324/0/6), and CF Ben Pawlak (.349/7/19). Looking at those three guys missing out, you can start to see why Fort Hagen is not already pulling away from their league like County Crossing (BL), University Point (ML), and Roxbury (RL) are.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1680887115

So, who will take the IL in 2303? If we had to place some bets at Easy City Downs, we would go heavy on the Silver Shroud.

Analysis

The 2303 season is now more than 1/3 of the way through, so we can start to see how some teams are already strongly in the hunt and some teams are already out of it.

The Rad Sox (#1) continue to look the most impressive in the CBO with the organization's best record at 33-9 and a six-game lead over FHE (#4) in the Railroad League. The Sox pulled away more from the rest of the South Charles Association with an 8-2 record over their last 10 games, including a split at Goodneighbor (#10), a sweep at Vault 81 (#12), a sweep at home against Quincy (#21), and a 2-1 series win over Diamond City (#6).

County Crossing comes in at #2 despite going only 5-5 over their last 10. The Bloodbugs started with a sweep at Concord (#11), a 1-2 home series against Easy Town (#8), a split with the Stags, and then a 1-2 road trip at Salem (#16).

University Point (#3) also went 5-5 in their last 10 but maintain the CBO's third-best record. In their last 10, the Deathclaws split with the Yao Guai, won two of three at Warwick (#24), split with the Dwellers, and then lost 2 of 3 versus Atom (#9).

As mentioned, FHE is #4 thanks to a strong early season and a 6-4 record over their last 10. After splitting with University Point, the Yao Guai lost 2 of 3 to Oberland (#17), swept the Hancocks, and then won 2 of 3 at the T-51s.

Rounding out the Top 5 is Finch Farm, which trails in the BL by five games but had the CBO's hottest 10-game streak at 9-1. The Four Leafs earned that record by sweeping the Chemists (#20) in two one-run games, sweeping Nordhagen Beach (#19) at home, sweeping the Synths (#14), and then going 2-1 at the Party Boys.

Speaking of the Boys, they are in a dead drop. As mentioned before, they have gone 2-8 in their last 10 and went 9-13 in May to drop them to a current tie with the Witch Hats for 4th place in the BL. Nordhagen Beach has won the BL regular season title all five years of the full CBO with their only non-playoff season coming in the inaugural 2296 BL-only schedule where they went 26-34 and finished in 5th place. We won't pretend to know what owner Emogene Cabot is thinking, but the front office with GM Brendan Kneecapped and Manager Matt "Ballhawk" Getman must be tense right now.

Kind of crazy how close the Institute League is so far. If Finch Farm didn't catch fire all three of the other division leaders would have six or more game leads

The Red Rockets has been really disappointing so far, but at least its still early. And it's a good thing they don't have to catch the Rad Sox. Can't remember a team still in single digit losses come June!

It has not happened in a while! In 2298, Oberland was 33-7 after their first 40 games and 34-8 after 42. They did not lose their 10th game until the 45th game of the season against FHE. Who does Roxbury play in their 45th game? FHE.

Nuka News Update

Reporting on the NWL, NWLB, and APYL Leagues

by Evan Guy

1 June 2303

Cherry, Quartz Hold Advantages in Playoff Race

The Cherry Ghoulrillas and Quartz Star Force sit atop the Nuka World League standings as we complete the second full month of the season. The Ghoulrillas have a two-game lead in a league where the top half and bottom half are easily distinguished.

Leading the way for Cherry is both the offense and pitching. The Ghoulrillas lead in runs scored (193) and runs allowed (141) for a +52 run differential. 1B Carlos Aguilar appears to be the runaway Nuka King favorite on offense, leading the NWL in multiple hitting categories: home runs (19), RBI (42), SLG (.844), OPS (1.233), WAR (2.3), total bases (108), extra-base hits (27), ISO (.508), OPS+ (206), and wOBA (.499). Cherry doesn't have an equivalent for the Nuka Cannon Award, but ace Mike Coombaya (6-1, 2.40) and SP Joe Penaltybox (5-1, 1.79) are having great seasons.

The Starforce are behind statistically to Cherry but still good, ranking 3rd in runs allowed (177) and tied for 2nd with the Quantum Nukalurks for runs allowed (142), a +35 run differential. The Nukalurks are the top power team in the league with 45 home runs, with LF Matt Neddo leading the team with 9. RF Daniel Rousseaux (.354/3/15) and 1B Thinker Brown (.351/5/16) help to generate a lot of offense. Six players each have at least 5 home runs on the season. Pitching has been led by the performances of ace Chris Yao (5-1, 2.68) and SP Travis Sisler (5-1, 2.77). The bullpen has been solid with closer Charles Widmar (11 SV, 2.51) leading the way.

Vim! View

Veracious, Vivacious, Vainglorious Vision of the Vim! Leagues

by Vikky Vail

Rayburn Point, Dalton Farm Eye Titles

The Fog Division's Rayburn Point Patcheyes and the Harbor Division's Dalton Farm Fog Crawlers have used the month of June to break away from the jumbled pack that we saw a month ago.

The Patcheyes currently hold a six-game lead on the Brooke's Head Behemoths in a winner-plays-on, loser-done division race. Rayburn Point's manager, Three O'Clock Johnson, has emphasized the need to pitch well out of the gate. That could not be more evident with the absolutely brilliant performances of fourth starter John Kutner (11-0, 2.33). Ace pitcher Nick Glawe (7-3, 2.62) and third starter Vrabe Swenson (4-2, 2.70) have also shown some ability to win key games, while closer Luke Harpoonman (12 SV, 0.32) has been dominant.

Offensively, the Patcheyes could use some improvement, with them being middle of the pack in almost every offensive category. RF Greg De Groot has emerged as the team leader with a .247/12/34 line. SS Jayden Neo is hitting .269/4/18 to help out.

For the Fog Crawlers, they are looking to repeat as division champions. Currently, they hold a three-game led over the Acadia Acadians at the All-Star Break and with 38 left to play. Dalton Farm is also the best overall team, leading the Vim! League in both runs scored (280) and runs allowed (158).

On offense, the Crawlers are led by two heavy hitting players in the middle of the lineup. C C.J. Abney (.335/11/42) is the team leader at the cleanup spot, with third hitter, LF James Darling (.352/9/34) also helping to pack the runs in each game. Four other players on the team have at least seven home runs for the VL's best in RF Mitchel Moore (.245/9/28), 3B Brad McCormick (.276/8/25), SS Chris Huffsettler (.277/7/27), and CF Ramon Delgado (.240/7/27).

For pitching, Dalton Farm just got a big time trade player in SP Phil Cecil, who is expected to be the ace for the second half of the season. In 12 appearances with the CBO's Concord Radstags, Cecil was 0-0 with a 4.79 ERA as a reliever. However, he has had one start with Dalton Farm, a no-decision where he threw 8.0 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Cecil takes the spot of an already dominant pitcher in Chris Gallogly (10-1, 2.45) who slips to the second spot. Cry Baby Uribe (7-3, 2.16) also helps to give the Crawlers a formidable starting rotation. Not to be outdone, the bullpen also leads the Vim! League in ERA with CL Jumbo Cleveland (8 SV, 2.81) considered to be a key part. Sometimes starter Ryan Means (3-2, 1.75) is a bullpen force. Currently injured SP Kyle Hooch (3-2, 4.66) should return to the rotation at some point to move Rick Hat (3-4, 5.28) into the bullpen or down to Huntress Island.

Standings

Looking at what the records "should" be based on runs scored/runs against is one of my favorite things to do, even though I know it's basically a worthless exercise many hate, it's the type of exercise my stats background loves, so I especially appreciate that analysis.

It's definitely not enough of a tell to give the full story on performance. Sunshine Tidings is currently on a five-game losing streak which is the biggest tell of why they are in last place in a close league. Run differential also cannot tell much. For example, in a four-game stretch where they went 1-3, the Chemists won 7-0, and then lost 3-2, 2-1, and 11-9. In that case, their run differential was +3 (19-16) in that four-game stretch but obviously they only had one game that was in their favor. Still, it gives my universe some simplistic calculations to focus on.

A better breakdown may be how their runs allowed stat is deceiving. Overall, they have only the 6th-best ERA and hits allowed. They walk fewer batters than all but Nordhagen Beach (who is also struggling tremendously on offense), but that is the only other stat that gives some information on why they are 2nd in the NCA in runs allowed. Their team is basically better than many of the other teams in not allowing unearned runs (only four unearned runs allowed, fewest in the CBO), bringing down that runs allowed streak. Should their defense begin to struggle, the rest of the IL would distance themselves from the Chemists. So, on paper, they are much better than Abernathy, but their performance has not matched the talent difference. For reference, PAM predicted Abernathy to win only 39 games all season (39-81), whereas PAM had Sunshine Tidings to be just above .500 (61-59), which seems about right. They are OK but still have huge holes compared to the likes of Fort Hagen, Concord, and Starlight in the IL.

I generally like it because it validates me quite often that when my team is having a losing year, it's just a result of how a particular set of events that led to our reality happening are, rather than the team actually being structurally deficient. It's like the sayings go, you have to actually play the games. It's each individual result that matters. But it's also as Captain Picard says. Sometimes you can make no mistakes and still lose, that is not failure, that is life.

Visiting Vim! League Vacation Venues

Acadia

Nestled atop a verdant peak, the venerable observatory of Acadia is a vista that beckons to all travelers seeking refuge and adventure. This idyllic enclave was known as a haven for vagabond synths seeking asylum from the dangers of the Commonwealth.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1681610277

The observatory's terrain is naturally sheltered, and augmented by makeshift walls that keep the virulent fog at bay, ensuring that the atmosphere is clear and vivacious. The interior of the observatory is comprised of three levels, each with its own unique character and verve.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1681610277

On the ground level, visitors will find the telescope dome and control center, presided over by the visionary leaders DiMA and Faraday. As one ventures further into the observatory, they will discover an intermediate level that hosts a vibrant farm and infirmary, a variety of trading posts, and spacious living quarters that are veritably inviting.

Descending further down into the depths of the observatory, visitors will find a bustling network of workshops and storage rooms, teeming with vibrant activity and innovative ideas. From the creative minds of the engineers and artisans that call Acadia home, amazing inventions and advancements are being produced daily.

Angry Emogene Calms Down

By the end of May, Nordhagen Beach Party Boys owner Emogene Cabot had had about enough of her team's struggles. Reportedly threatening firing, trading, and verbs we cannot mention here, Cabot told her team in no uncertain terms that winning was the only option.

The Boys responded the past week with a six-game winning streak before falling yesterday to Fort Hagen to break that streak. Now at 25-24, the Party Boys are tied with the Starlight Lady Killers for 5th seed in the NCA with a weekend date with the last-place The Slog Ghouls.

Two parts of the Nordhagen Beach team not working per its usual are the hitting and bullpen. The Boys ae 10th in the NCA with a .247 average with their best hitter being CF Maxx Murtagh (.290). The bullpen is a surprising 11th in ERA at 5.72 with CL Matt Breakball (5.47) standing out for his lack of success. Some within the organization believe that Breakball, not Tom Mannequin should have been the closer traded away to FHE. Mannequin has a 1.48 ERA and has recorded an SCA-best 17 saves as the Yao Guai closer.

Despite their bad hitting, Nordhagen Beach is tied for first with 60 home runs, helping them to a decent 7th in runs scored at 217. RF Jonathan Angelou (15), Murtagh (13), and LF Michael Fogcrawler (11) have hit the most. 1B Dustin Mart and 3B Dirty Dog Sapienza have each hit 7.

Starting pitching also has been doing what it does despite the much lower run support. SPs Beahboy Nut (7-3, 2.25), Ugio Church (5-3, 2.92), and Chet Arthur (4-3, 3.31) always seem to keep the Party Boys in games when they pitch. Tommy Beach (4-6, 4.85) is struggling, but he can pitch a great game here and there.

The bullpen, though, has been an enigma. Along with Breakball, four other relievers have an ERA above 5.00: Ted Iam (11.57), Marc Woodsman (8.44), Handsome Frank (7.20), and Julian Shed (5.14). Longtime Lexington Synth starter, Lawdog Whipple (1-1, 2.63), has been the best reliever for the Boys.

Cabot's rage is not only directed at players. There are questions about the long-term commitment of Mgr Matt Ballhawk Getman and GM Brendan Kneecapped. Both guys are still under 40 and have had success in the organization. However, as Nate Howard usually states, complacency wins you a seat in the stands.

Cabot has probably cooled down now that her Boys are back in the playoff hunt. Should they keep losing, though, some of the Boys may find themselves sharing cell space with Emogene's dad in Parsons State Insane Asylum. Or they just might get fired, cut, or traded.

Feature Story: Puttin' the Nifty Back in the Garage

Two seasons ago, the Atom Cats looked to be near the top of the hill when they faced off against Nordhagen Beach in the Sole Survivor Series. The Cats ultimately fell to the Party Boys in the final, but they were sure they would be back. That didn't quite happen in the 2302 season when they went down in the Play-in Series.

This season did not start out as a championship-contending look, but the Cats are now on an 8-game winning streak, putting them right in the thick of the SCA playoff hunt. At 30-22, Atom now trails first-place University Point by just four games and would be the 4th seed if the playoffs were to begin today. Diamond City is currently a game behind for the 5th spot and Vault 81 is two games behind for the sixth spot.

The power behind the Cats' streak is their offense. Ranked 1st in the SCA in runs scored (285), OPS (.801), wOBA (.353), and Base Running (+6.7) and 2nd in Average (.271), OBP (.362), WAR (13.3), and homers (68), the Cats are hard to get out on offense.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1681947068

The leader of the offense is a surprising reemerging player in RF Melon Sanderson (.309/20/49). Originally a 9th-round pick in the 2296 Inaugural Draft, Sanderson was a five-year starter for the Warwick Mirelurks. After struggling at the start of the 2301 season, the Mirelurks traded Sanderson to the Wild Gatorclaws of the Nuka World League. After just one part of a season there and after leading the NWL with 31 home runs in just 66 games, Atom brought him back to the CBO to finish the 2301 season. He did not find his old success in 2302, but has found magic to start the 2303 season. That includes leading the CBO in home runs and leading the SCA in homers, RBI, runs (51), extra-base hits (30), and ISO (.366).

Other leaders for Atom include SS Jake Doucette (.297/10/32), 2B Rabbit Forest (.313/4/22), LF Jeremy Schoolboy (.293/4/24), CF Earthbound Bussey (.289/5/23), and 1B Will Ashfire (.211/13/36).

Pitching has not driven their success, but the Cats have the 5th-best Starters ERA. Their leader is ace Scruffy Taguchi (5-2, 2.44), with their three other starters sporting ERAs below 4.00: Deedee Martinson (4-3, 3.44), Pete Pembroke (6-3, 3.93), and Bow Rome (8-3, 3.74).

Analysis

Roxbury has secured its spot as the #1 team. The Rad Sox are winning at a .788 clip on the season and went 8-2 in their last 10, tied for the best streak in the last 10 games with two other teams. The Sox started with a split at University Point (#2), won all three at FHE (#5), split with Goodneighbor (#13), and then swept Egret (#24).

Coming in at #2 is University Point with a 6-4 record in their last 10. The Deathclaws were unable to secure a sweep in that stretch but also never lost a series. After facing Roxbury, the Claws won two of three at Jamaica Plain (#21), split at Diamond City (#8), and then won two of three versus Goodneighbor.

County Crossing remains #3 with a 5-5 record in their last 10. The Bloodbugs were swept at Fort Hagen (#6), won two of three at Easy Town (#15), split with Concord (#10), and then won two of three over Finch Farm.

The featured Atom Cats are #4 thanks to their current eight-game winning streak, tying them with Roxbury and Nordhagen Beach (#11) for the best record in the last 10. Atom was swept at the Yao Guai, and then swept at Goodneighbor, versus the Ninjas, and versus the Red Rockets.

FHE moves past Vault 81 (#7) for #5 to give the SCA four of the top five spots. The Yao Guai went 6-4. In addition to the mentions of their first two series versus Atom and Roxbury, the Yao Guai then swept Quincy (#19) in Quincy, outscoring the Gunners 18-1 and then won two of three at the Swatters.

Next week we reach the near-midway part of the 120-game season with teams getting up to 57 games. At 52 games, let's take a look at the playoff picture.

A Hubflower for Magnolia: The Case of the Jilted Lovers

Chapter 4: Crooners and Swooners

That night, I decided to fill my role as the gumshoe on the prowl. I decided being on the scene might help me out a stalker-killer in the midst.

I walked into the Third Rail, the kind of joint where trouble was always brewing. The dimly lit room was packed with characters, each one with a story to tell. The smoky air was thick with tension, and I knew I had to keep my wits about me if I was going to solve this case.

As I sat at the bar in the Third Rail, I couldn't help but notice Magnolia singing on stage. She had a voice like an angel, and the way she swayed to the music made me forget about everything else for a moment. Hell, I imagined I was the real Nick Valentine for a minute there the way my own body reacted to watching her stage act.

But my attention was quickly diverted when I saw one of the guys in the crowd make a move on her. I didn't like the way he was looking at her, and I knew I had to keep an eye on him.

As I scanned the room, I tried to pick out any other suspicious characters. There was a group of men huddled in the corner, whispering among themselves. They seemed to be up to no good, and I made a mental note to keep an eye on them.

There was also a woman at the bar who was drinking heavily and making a scene. She was loud and obnoxious, and I couldn't help but wonder what her deal was.

As the night wore on, I continued to observe the patrons in the Third Rail. Some were just regulars, there to enjoy the music and a few drinks. But others seemed to have something to hide, and I knew I had to stay alert.

Magnolia was on stage, belting out a tune with her sultry voice. She was a real looker, with silky brunette hair and a figure that could make a radstag kick a hole in power armor. As I watched her perform, I saw one of the ghouls in the back corner making eyes at her. He was a shady character, the kind of guy who always had a trick up his sleeve. I had to keep an eye on him.

But as I scanned the room, I saw other characters who could be up to no good. Whitechapel Charlie, a grizzled old-timer who had seen it all, scanned along with me. He was wiping down the bar with a rag, eyeing the patrons suspiciously. And then there was the couple in the booth near the door. They were whispering to each other, their heads close together. I couldn't make out what they were saying, but something about their demeanor put me on edge.

Magnolia finished her song, and the crowd erupted in applause. As she left the stage, I walked over to her.

"Great performance," I said. "But you need to watch your back. That guy in the back corner has been eyeing you all night."

Magnolia looked over at the guy and shuddered. "Yeah, that’s One-eye Mack, one of the regulars who never says a word or nothing. He gives me the creeps," she said. "Of course, a lot of them do. Thanks for the warning, but I don’t think One-eye Mack is our guy."

I nodded and headed back to my stool at the bar. As I sat down, Whitechapel Charlie floated toward me.

"Detective, Nick! You seem like a man who's looking for trouble," he said.
"Looking for trouble and trying to keep the peace," I replied.

"Well, keep your eyes peeled," he said. "There's some bad blood in this joint." Whitechapel Charlie sighed. “There’s always bad blood in this joint. I’m just happy if they spend their caps and spare the bloodshed.”

I nodded, took a long drag of my cigarette, and scanned the room once more. This was going to be a long night. But I was determined to get to the bottom of whatever was going on in the Third Rail.

As Magnolia began her next song, I kept a watchful eye on the characters in the bar. I listened to Magnolia and ignored One-eye Mack to find other shady characters. Who knew what secrets they were hiding? I listened intently to the lyrics of Magnolia’s song, hoping for some clue to the mystery that was unfolding before me through insight of melody. But for now, all I could do was wait, watch, and hope that I would find the answers I was looking for.

As Magnolia's second song drew to a close, I scanned the room once more, looking again at the suspicious characters. My eyes fell upon a man in a silver fedora, lurking in the corner. I couldn’t see his face, but I could see that he was scanning the room just as I was. He mostly seemed to be keeping an eye on Magnolia. And me. I couldn't help but wonder what his motives were. I couldn’t place him, but he was the most suspicious of all the characters I had observed thus far.

Just as I was about to approach him, another man sauntered up to the stage, leering at Magnolia with a lascivious grin. He whispered something in her ear, and she recoiled in disgust. "I don't have to listen to this," she snapped, glaring at him. But he wasn't deterred and continued to make advances toward her.

The other patrons of the bar didn't take kindly to this behavior, and a couple of regulars stepped in, pulling the man away from the stage. I watched as they ushered him towards the door, but not before he shot Magnolia a furious look. “You will love me!”

As the commotion died down, I turned to one of the other patrons and asked where Ham was. "I heard he's dealing with a bunch of fight upstairs," she replied, gesturing towards the staircase. I nodded, grateful for the information, and made my way toward the stairs to see if I could assist.

As I ascended the stairs, I could hear the sound of scuffling and shouting coming from the street above. My hand tightened around the handle of my revolver, and I steeled myself for whatever lay ahead. At the top, I indeed saw fighting and scrapping, broken bottles of booze peppering the greased streets. The young man who had approached Magnolia was getting roughed up by the regulars and other chaos ensued. I ducked back into the Third Rail sure that my chances of remaining an intact bucket of bolts was in my best interest.

I went back to Magnolia who had not yet begun her next set. At the same time, she sashayed like she always did, almost as though she had forgotten the encounter before. I realized, too, that I had forgotten about the mysterious character in the fedora and looked back to where I last saw him. Neither man nor fedora remained.

“Is this how every night goes?” I asked Magnolia.

“One of the less eventful nights,” she said with an eerie monotone. She had seen much worse than this.

I ended up making a sweep of the joint. Despite all the suspects gathered in a room, no one was such a suspect that he, or she, could be accused of serial killings. Magnolia indicated she was going to finish her array of songs, and I sat back again acting more like bodyguard than detective.

At the end of the night, as Magnolia finished her set, I breathed a sigh of relief. It had been a long night, but I was glad to have kept everyone safe. Well, at least, I had kept Magnolia that way. As I was going to find out, the chaos on the street above was much more complicated.
