The New York Billion Dollar Lineups scored just five runs in three games in Houston. Now, they also gave up only six runs on the way to dropping two of three and I would have expected fortunes to be reversed, but then again, what's left of that 'stros lineup? Not a whole lot.
I was playing a round with my Raccoons while watching this from the archives and the Raccoons were getting roflstomped by the New York Crusaders. Couldn't help but snarl at random Mets poking at the dish why they couldn't get the damn offense going...!? *Awkward* Sunday off day today, and unless I'm crazy enough to watch their 4:40 ET (??) first pitch against the Fish on Wednesday, I won't see the Metsies again until next weekend. With summer time in effeft for everybody now, that's 10:40 pm my time. But we know I'm crazy, so... :) |
Factoring in the games currently in progress, the Billion Dollar Lineup Mets now have the fewest runs scored in the league. :)
Merry Christmas! |

Speaking of not aging well, ol' Amazin (getting close to) 69 compensated for having one of only 6 free DirecTV games (I actually HAVE gotten rid of Extra Innings this year) hidden away on Apple by downloading it after the fact Friday night, but the basketball surfeit made it impossible for me to view it on Saturday, and since the FOX game wasn't available in my "local" (193.6 miles) to Atlanta area, I figured I would just record the FOX Sports 1 rerun on Sunday morning, and take comfort in that there was no Sunday game (insanity!) and so I would have time deal with them both later. So, the weekend's fun over with, today I watched Wayne and Train call the action on Friday (don't know if I can really get behind Randazzo's "And this Juan is outta here!" for Soto's blast, but at least I saw it) and then watched a few innings of the FS1 replay before discovering that the idiots actually put the final (depressing) score on the ticker and spoiled the game for me…and then, having completely Metsed myself out, I completely forgot that the bizarre off-Sunday meant that there was a game tonight, and didn't flick over until the 8th, missing what was apparently a good bit of fun. So for my 6 precious Mets games, that's one only on download, one spoiled by the Idiots at FS1, and one blanked on by this Idiot, right here. Sigh. (I mean, I can probably download anything I want down the road, but I doubt I'll keep that up for long, honestly. I'll just wait for the joy that is FOX and ESPn and TBS and the few precious times that MLB airs an SNY telecast.) ETA: Oooh, a salami for Peeeeete! Dang, I missed it. ETAA: Holy spit! Gary just admitted he used to be a compulsive horse-player! Didn't see that one coming! (I guess that's why when Ronnie said [wrt to Gary giving up dairy] "you have no vices any more" last season, Gary almost audibly rolled his eyes? Huh.) |
As soon as the Mets send me to bed, they showed the Fish that we're not the Pirates and beat them into the ground. Typical!
Of course a Peeeeeete Grand Slam makes me very giddy on the inside! :D ... and even on the outside! (scary grin) :) The Fish CF pawed a Torrens F8 over the wall :p:p The unlucky pitcher facepawing in agony made it even funnier. Lindor has a new baby boy, which means he now has more new kids (1) than base hits (0-11) this season. :woohoo: |
Good news! Manaea is out until "late May/early June"!
("Good news" in the sense that, this being the Mets, Manaea might have spontaneously combusted, instead.) Kodai Ghost-Fork makes his first start of the season and Keith notes that he wasn't throwing the forkball much in spring training and he mostly pitched against minor-leaguers. Now some might argue that the Fish qualify as such, but when Xavier Edwards leads off with a double in the RF gap and Kyle Stowers follows by hitting one waaaaaay up the berm in CF before Kodai has even thrown a forkball, it's…not the best omen. Kodai gets the #3 hitter on a grounder to Vientos, then throws Matt Mervis a forkball that Mervis smashes hard behind 1B…but Peeeeeete makes a nice diving stop and throws to Senga, covering, for the out. The SNY truck is so excited that they start playing the "end of the inning" music…even though this is only out #2. It's going to be one of those games, isn't it? Sigh. (Kodai does get the third out and Nimmo homers in the 2nd, so that's good, at least.) Also, I didn't know that Paul Blackburn was on the Impaired List (I thought perhaps he wasn't in the rotation because he's…Paul Blackburn), but he is. As noted in the article linked above, he started throwing yesterday, and may be ready to pitch when his 15 days are over. https://media1.tenor.com/m/bvFLtERUC.../yay-buffy.gif (Damn, getting that image to show up was tough. Meanwhile, Lindor got his first hit of the season [RBI single] and tied things up.) |
I try to find solace in the fact that at least we're not the Barves (0-6).
Today is the day of the stupid-late game (for me). Tempted despite their 2-4 shenanigans. |
2-4? Unless they played a game I missed on Sunday, the Mets are only 2-3. And today's game is the EARLY one (4.30 ET/10.30 CET), so I'm a touch confused.
Not that this is any different from normal, but still. |
2-4 was my bad. Either my two paws or my brain cells (just as many) were still a-zzz. They're 2-3.
Or maybe I saw something in my crystal ball but I must shush now. |
I'm off to taunt the Yankees thread! I'm off to taunt the Yankees thread!
I mean, justification, seriously. |
When I said that I had seen enough of Brett Baty at third base, I didn't quite mean to put him at second base.
|
You realize, I trust, that you could have simply stopped that sentence at "I've seen enough of Brett Baty" and avoided all that confusion?
|
When I said that I had seen enough of Mark Vientos at third base -
Period. |
Mets beat Fish, 6-5 in 11 innings. Not that they didn't have a bazillion chances to win it in due time, if not a decent time (for me).
(checks the clock) Yeah well, it's not like I'm gonna get much zzzzz now anyway, so why not rant for five minutes. First, Big Pete gets an A with a star today. 3-for-4 with a big-*** homer, two doubles, all RBI's in regulation, and a walk in the 11th that turned into the deciding run in the end, and also some rather spiffy defense including a glove-first plunge into first base to get an out on D. Second, Huascar Brazóban got his first career save because for some reasons we tried to lose the game with Boom-Boom Diaz in the eighth (!) but didn't, and Brazóban got the last two outs when Alex Young had already set fire to the team bus. But, oh-boy, oh-boy, oh-boy-oh-boy! The rest of that silly team! Clay Holmes is hard to watch and didn't last five innings, although he was thoroughly undermined by ludricous defensive decrepitude far beyond what you'd expect even from the Mets on getaway day in the Teal Palace. Vientos, Baty, and Taylor all had their clownshoes on and did their royal best to throw the game away, and two of them even more than once. Given that at one point all three of them were also threatening to lose their superficially valiant battle to even bat for a decent room temperature (Taylor got a hit late, while Baty was thankfully disposed of when he became the free bogus runner, and Vientos was just all-out **** cakes) - maybe it wouldn't be the worst idea to clone Pete into a couple more infielders with average D that can actually whack the ******* baseball? Lindor and his puny, *puny* $341M contract are also having another one of his patented bottomless starts to the season. I hear he had his tire fire game with the glove yesterday, so he's not gonna get a passing grade. Soto didn't do a lot (right or wrong), and I have already forgotten who we had in left because my brain has shut off now. And Winker is and always will be a Stinker. Although I'll tolerate him if he hits .280 with 25 homers. Which he's so far not on a good trajectory for. Thanks to the replay center for getting the call on that horrendous Baty throw to the plate right. Whoever the Mets catcher was at that point (we used all of them), had to make body movements normally reserved for owls to dig that one out and slap it on the wrist of that face on the Miami Ghastlycolors - who was initially ruled safe at the plate for what woulda been the losing run, except that Angel Hernandez has retired and the people in the TV room can now actually use their ******* eyeballs to see that he got the out by the barest bit of contact. Yay, Mets, 3-3 and looking all hollow under that Billion Dollar Payroll... I am so tired. |
Doesn't sound like fun. (I exited after 9, of course. That's it for the free preview…I'll have to download the home opener.)
Speaking of the Mets starting seasons against Canadian sides, have some brief video of the 1969 Mets, losing on Opening Day to the newborn Expos, 11-10. The ineffective Tom Seaver is seen, but not video of Montreal relief pitcher Dan McGinn taking Tom (not-so-) Terrific deep for the first Canadian dinger in MLB history. |

Was hoping MLB Network would help me out with seeing the game live tomorrow, but apparently a number of teams are playing Friday afternoon games. Options are Friars-Scrubs and Redbirds-Red Sox. Ah, well.

Which is the only way to get the Mets to play a Friday afternoon game. |
Odd first-inning thumper for Pete. Off the bat I moaned because it looked like an F9 where the rightfielder doesn't have to vacate his lawnchair, and then it was clearly outta there.
However - that was #229 for Pete, and he's now just one home run away from tying for a spot in the top 300 in all-time homers, a list that conveniently is on Wikipedia and is maintained daily. :p Currently the bottom entry there are Jose Altuve and Rob Deer, tying for 299th. |
Altuve and Deer, now that's a pair!
The download site took its sweet time. The game wasn't up until this morning. Megill is pitching really well. Maybe one day he'll see the 7th inning. [/killjoy] Did not realize that Ronnie wore glasses as a kid. Also didn't realize that we'd lost Jack DiLauro over the off-season. Still doing okay with the 1969 alumni, though SP: Jerry Koosman, Nolan Ryan, Gary Gentry RP: Dr. Ron Taylor, Bob Johnson (2 games), Jesse Hudson (1 game) C: Duffy Dyer, J.C. Martin IF: Ken Boswell, Al Weis, Wayne Garrett, Bobby Pfeil, Bob Heise OF: Cleon Jones, Art Shamsky (looking good!), Ron Swoboda, Rod Gaspar, Amos Otis (oy vey), Jim "Yeah, Surrrrrrrrre" Gosger (If Tommie hadn't left decades ago, we'd have a complete OF set.) So, yeah, 19 is a step down from the 24 we had a year ago, but it's still a decent turnout. (Hope I haven't jinxed the team now…let's get most of y'all to the 60th anniversary, okay?) |
