Orel Hershiser executed his option year and will e staying with the team. We expected that but certainly hope he bounces back next year.
Minor league players retiring: Jesus Cordova Rafael Ortega Alejandro Morales Terry Maxwell Ed Morgan Alexis White None had ever reached the Majors. We have six players eligible for Arbitration right now. We have decided to not offer Arb to Ernie Riles, Dave Leiper, or Tom Foley. That leaves Ron Gravel, Michael Klinger, and Ed Vande Berg. We are going to see if we can sign them before the Arb hearings. |
Terry McGriff was placed on waivers.

When I said we were drafting 24th, I was mistaken. The Draft Order had not been updated.
It seems we are drafting 7th. At that point, we have a strong chance of getting John Olerud. Could we even dream... of Robbie Alomar? The Draft is VERY deep. I checked the OSA Mock Draft and they have Alomar going at #4 and Olerud going at #6. The Jays get Travis Fryman. I really hope Olerud slips to us. |
Ron Gravel signed a two year contract extension for $2.7m
Michael Klinger signed a one year extension for $370,000 Ed Vande Berg signed a one year extension for $156,000 All three came in at least that what we projected them to get in arbitration, and Gravel is tied up for an extra year. |

DRAFT!
Big day! 1st Round 1. Braves - Frank Thomas 2. Phillies - Ray Lankford (1st surprise. Not Griffey Jr.?) 3. Royals - Roberto Alomar (still no Griffey Jr.?) 4. Yankees - Ken Griffey Jr. (a Yankee? Yuck.) 5. Reds - Moises Alou (holding our breath... one spot left...) 6. Orioles - John Olerud (DAMN IT!) Oh well. So, now who are WE going to take? The mock draft has Fryman dropping all the one to the end and has Delino DeShields the best pick for us. Admittedly, we need middle infield. My scouting Director recommends Ramon Martinez instead. (Ramon Martinez happens to be the only Major Leaguer born the same day that I was.) Immediate rotation anchor according to our scouts. Our picks by Round. 1. We went with our staff... Ramon Martinez, SP from Pacific College. 1 (suppl). Phil Planter - Power hitting OF out of College in New Hampshire 2. Jim Abbott - LHSP with #2 upside 2. (we had back to back picks) Hector Villanueva - C out of Puerto Rico. 3. Shawn Boskie - SP projects to be #5 guy or swingman. Good command. 4. Steve Chitren - RP from Japan. Bullpen filler 5. Paul Abbot - RP projects as solid bullpen contributor 6. Clint Zavaras - RP Zavala's signed immediately. We are negotiating with the rest but feel good about all of them. |
MVP AWARDS
AL - Cecil Fielder, Indians NL - Barry Bonds, Cardinals It is the first time winning for both of them. George Brett came 3rd in voting. |
Ramon Martinez and Phil Plantier both signed.
|
Jack Morris suffered a career-ending injury.
|
The only unsigned draftee we have is Shawn Boskie, and we expect him to sign.
Chance Sanders was placed on waivers. |
