Dat Gon' Hurt
While the Cuban Stars West are enjoying one of the best starts to a season in Eclipse League history (13-1 as I post this), their East-side brethren get a whuppin' put on them by the American Giants, with Luis Marquez and Jose Abreu each dropping a nickel of RBIs on them.

Markham Up
Johnny Markham becomes the 9th EL player to reach 200 career wins, with CC Sabathia still atop the career leaderboard just one W away from 250.
Plenty set to reach this milestone in oncoming months, and I reckon we'll see one or more of the top boys on this list eventually reach 300. |
April 1981 Recap
Eclipse League A typically enthralling start to the 1981 EL season, with some of that early craziness settling down in the latter part of the month. The Crawfords are the main surprise after such a dominant 1980, along with the Athletics, but it is only early. Monthly Award Winners

Out of the Shadows: Dicta Johnson
Fair to say Louis Johnson has a bit of an image problem. His nickname was "Spitball" (no idea how or when "Dicta" came into the mix), while the first sentence in Jim Riley's rather threadbare entry for him reads, "This spitballer pitched a no-hit game for Rube Foster's American Giants in 1913...". Not that the term had quite the pejorative context back then that it does now, but still, it does all seem a tad accusatory all the same.
Although he played for 10 different clubs over his 15 seasons in the various Negro Leagues of the early 20th century, Dicta is mainly associated with the Indianapolis ABCs, with whom he spent roughly half his career. Seamheads puts his lifetime record at 85-75 with an ERA+ bang on league average, while EC allocates him almost 16 WAR in his updated MLEs. BBRef lists him as an outfielder as well as a pitcher, a fairly generous designation given his career 163/244/212 slash line over a total of 529 at-bats. He also managed on occasion in 1922-3, but never in a full-time capacity. With his official weight listed at 60 kg (he was 5'7"), there wasn't much of Dicta, and while he is known to have been born in Elizabethtown IL, no details are known of his demise. In the EL, Dicta is currently playing his fourth season for the poor old Lincoln Giants, who drafted him 26th overall in 1977. His record to this point is 42-52, while he has struggled to keep the runs down, with his lifetime ERA+ an unhealthy 82. He is only 24 at the time of writing and looks to have some improvement in him from here. We'll keep an eye on whether or not that comes to pass over oncoming seasons. |
CCL for CCS
CC Sabathia continues to pace the pitchers with regard to the Wins leaderboard, notching his 250th against the BGs. With age settings skewed older in this league, I don't see any reason why he can't get to 300 and beyond. He is currently in his age-34 season.
|
Generation Gap
Another pinch me moment in this wonderful universe as ShoTime and Satch go mano e mano at opposite ends of their career. Still, the old bull gets the better of his rookie opponent this time as the red hot Grays continue on their merry way and the Athletics' struggles persist.

As Easy as A-B-C
No idea what is happening over at Riverside Park, with the ABCs franchise seemingly in utter disarray. An EL-worst 17-32 record and already 17 GB Detroit, last or near enough to in almost every meaningful metric, it's just a shambles. This humiliation by the AGs is merely the latest in what looks to be an unmitigated disaster in progress.
|
May 1981 Recap
Eclipse League Plenty going on around the EL as the Motown Stars and Grays clearly look the dominant clubs this season. Detroit in particular are looking fantastic and you have to like their chances of defending their 1980 title. Things are incredibly tight over in the FC with both races looking like they'll hold our interest until the end. Along with the ABCs (see previous post), Hilldale is really struggling, as are the Crawfords and most surprisingly of all the Black Yankees. Still plenty of games to rescue their seasons but they wouldn't want to mess about too much more from here on. Monthly Award Winners
Points of Interest
Transit League Baltimore already has a stranglehold on the FRC American, while after their unexpected playoff run last year the Cubans have reassumed their traditional spot in the cellar. At least they had that brief flit of light; the Habaneros are dead last again and never even got that. Monthly Award Winners

The Other Yordan
The Black Barons are producing another typically feisty season, and offseason acquisition Yordan Alvarez is one reason why. This fine game moves him to the top of the EL HR list with 16. The BBs might not get to play with the big boys at the end of the year, but they'll keep them all honest along the way, as they almost invariably do.

He's taking his time doing so, but there's no doubt Manny Machado is improving year-on-year and looks set for his best season yet (nice timing as he enters his arb years...). However it plays out, it will be memorable for this game alone.

Out of the Shadows: Agustin Acosta
Talk about international men of mystery - other than his sparsely-populated Seamheads entry (and its mirrored BBRef version), I have absolutely no information to share with you about Agustin Acosta. We know he was born in Cuba, but neither where nor when exactly, and have no details whatsoever about his life outside of baseball or death after it.
As for the career bookended by these other termini, it was spent as a 3B and pitcher in his homeland during the first decade of the 20th century, fairly evenly split between Carmelita and Matanzas. Its documented state consists of 137 PA and 36 IP, both conducted with adequate proficiency (110 OPS+, 103 ERA+), but the sample size of which makes definitive conclusions futile. Let's just say that - like The Dude Lebowski - he abided, and leave it there. The game imports him as a pitcher, and a poor-hitting one at that, but one with decent enough skills as a moundsman. For the EL, those skills were good enough to get him picked 21st overall by the Crawfords in the 1976 Draft. They have remained good enough for him to amass just on 20 rWAR in the 4+ seasons since (along with two ASG appearances), and were good enough for him to be tied in with Willie McGee and traded away for one of the league's big guns in Leon Durham at the end of the '79 season. So far, 1981 hasn't been his best season but let's see if he can turn things around as we pass through the halfway mark and beyond. As always, we'll keep tabs on him along the way. |
Deep Digging Detroit
As you'll see in the imminent monthly update, it has been an ordinary stretch for the MoStars in recent weeks. But they show the requisite heart in this 20-inning monster that might help put things back on track. Good to see things working out better in this timeline for poor old Tim Anderson...

Out of the Shadows: Fred Bell
It can't be easy being the lesser-known, less-talented brother of an absolutely blinding star. Ask Tommy Aaron, Billy Ripken. Poor old Cloyd Boyer had Ken and Clete to deal with. So it was for Fred Bell, elder brother of James - the legendary HoFer more commonly known as "Cool Papa".
Fred was born in 1903, the year before CPB, in Starkville MS. The two of them came into the league almost concurrently, with the younger brother a year ahead, and actually were teammates for a couple of brief stints at the St. Louis Stars. "Lefty", as Fred was known, reputedly had a fine fastball but could never tamp down his wildness - not unlike baby brother. The big difference for them was that James could hit and, apparently, outrun the wind. (Or, as the Gospel according to St. Satchel claimed, light.) Fred was no rabbit at the plate, slashing 268/336/437 over his short career according to SH, but that led nowhere and he was out of the game by 1927, just as baby bro was getting started. Funny how the worm turns. Up to v24, OOTP simply didn't like Cool Papa. In virtually every save I've had him a part of he has struggled to hold his ratings, as is the case here. To the extent that there is a decent enough chance that Fred will outshine him in the EL. Drafted 7th overall in the '76 Draft by his current club, Fred has split time between the top and second tiers throughout his career, being deployed as a two-way player over that period. At the time of writing, he has just over 3 WAR combined between his hitting and pitching stats, with his work on the mound the more successful element of his game so far. As IRL, it is his control that has been problematic despite him racking up plenty of Ks - his career K/BB is just 1.5. Still, he scrubs up OK and with that hitting profile thrown in should see continual interest in his services over the seasons - unlike Cool Papa, who has seen little recent action and enjoyed only sporadic success over his EL career, with a total of 21 bWAR that doesn't look like it's going to move much for the remainder. We'll keep tabs to see if Fred can turn the tables on his brother in this timeline. |
July 1981 Recap
Eclipse League Still just the Grays doing it easy, with plenty in store for us from the other three by the look of things. Fascinating to see the Dodgers leading the FC American with their Pythag at +6 and their run differential marginally in the red. Does this mean they've been lucky or have some improvement in them? We shall see. Meanwhile, by dint of a 9-14 July (that followed a 13-13 June), the MoStars now find themselves a handful of games in arrears and forced to chase the Buckeyes. This should be a fantastic battle between two quality clubs. And finally I think it's really only a two-way go in the FC National, with the Barons soon to drop off the leaders, although they are busy in the trade market and seem ready for a fight. KC is its usual manic self, mixing brilliance with bedlam, but if they can sort themselves out they are as good as any club on their day. Monthly Award Winners

August 1981 Recap
Eclipse League We are set for a big finish to the 1981 EL season, with three of the four races still very much in play. Of those, the WC National continues to be the most fascinating, with the Buckeyes and MoStars hanging onto each other like a couple punch-drunk heavyweights at the end of a particularly vicious prizefight. Detroit will have to get it done without OF Henry Cruz, who is done for the year thanks to an ACL tear. The FC National race is the closest of all as we enter September, with the West and Monarchs tied for first and the Black Barons still hanging in there. Meanwhile, the BGs have made a run for it in the FC American and now we have to see whether the RGs and Dodgers have the legs to go with them. Brooklyn, in particular, looks just about ready to crack. Monthly Award Winners

Notes from the Transit Lounge: end of 1981 TL regular season
Harlem makes a long-awaited return to post-season action after winning it all in 1971 and going close the year after. Theirs was the closest-run of the four races, with Indy, Baltimore and Chattanooga each having a fairly cushy ride to the playoffs. It looks a very evenly-matched finale to this season.
64 is the new clubhouse lead for homers, set finally by Bobby Marshall this season - an even more amazing feat given his nearest rivals had 30! Freddie Guzman also sets a new SB mark with a whopping 112, while Pumpsie Green's 124 walks are a new high as well. https://i.imgur.com/mfmnwe5.pnghttps://i.imgur.com/ZcfjMxq.png https://i.imgur.com/nmtknRH.png https://i.imgur.com/b6NXsZb.png Of the four finalists, only the Black Sox - WS losers in both 1971 (to the Stars) and 1976 (to the Choo-Choos) - are looking for their first title. |

Out of the Shadows: Who Are Frank Duncan?
The screenshots above are the results you get from BBRef and Seamheads, respectively, for FRANK DU... Yep, as anyone even vaguely familiar with Negro League baseball knows, there are Frank Duncans just running amok in the historical database. So when a twist of fate brought two of them into the Eclipse League universe at the same time, I thought the final OotS feature this year should try to unravel this mess for once and for all. I say this very tongue-in-cheek, of course. it's not all that difficult to follow. Frank Duncan A (let's steer clear of those pesky numbers and "Juniors" here, shall we...) Known as "Pete" or "Rebel", this Frank Duncan shares only a name and no DNA with the other two. He had a long and fairly successful playing career starting in 1907 before a brief stint as a Manager before retiring from both in 1928. Frank Duncan B As per his birth certificate - and this is where a lot of the confusion stems from - his full name is Frank Lee Duncan jr, although his father was not a pro ballplayer. Like his namesake A, B also had a strong and long playing career from 1920 onwards, with the last decade or so spent as a Player-Manager, again with some decent success. He retired in 1946 as a player and '47 as a Manager. Frank Duncan C The son of B and, therefore, officially Frank Lee Duncan III. A pitcher who barely left a mark on the game in the post WW2 years. OK, so as I said, quite a bit more straightforward than it seems on first glance. So let's now put this in an EL context, which means we are only concerned with Frank Duncans A and B, both of who come into the league via the 1980 Draft as curated MLE versions. Frank Duncan A (duncan0003fra) - a corner OF whose pop comes on a bit later in his career - was taken in the 3rd Round (45th overall) by the Bacharach Giants and has been as high as #25 on the Prospects list. He is yet to make the bigs, biding his time at Columbus in the TL, where he put together a fine rookie season, hitting 301 with 6 HR and 47 RBI, and was named to the Futures Game. Given the BGs' small-market status, one would presume that Frank A will see action at the parent club sooner rather than later. Frank Duncan B (dunca02fra) - a glove-heavy Catcher / first-baseman who imports as "Frank Duncan jr" - signed as a minor league FA in 1980 with the Buckeyes franchise. His prospect peak was #75 and he has split his debut season between the big and little Cleveland clubs, currently holding down the everyday job at the parent club where he has done perhaps better than expected with the bat (228 / 1 / 47 in 419 PAs) and provided solid defence behind the dish. He may well find himself in the playoffs this year if his lads can get past the MoStars, a battle that has raged all season and seems set to go to the wire. We'll check back in with both along the way, and keep an eye out for Frank C as well. In the meantime, with this being the final one of these this season, here as usual are the career stats of all those covered in this series and still active. |

1981 EL Regular Season Summary
As if to compensate for a lack of it last season, 1981 comes to one of the more dramatic ends in EL history, at least in the Fleet Conference.
With the Grays having cruised to the WCA title and Detroit having finally seen off a dogged challenge from the Buckeyes with a few days to spare, both FC races go down to the final game with the standings as follows before those final contests: The BGs waste their chance with a tight loss at Newark and the RGs make them pay for it with a late comeback giving them a 7-5 home victory over the Grays to force a tiebreaker. Nothing doing in the other division, however, with both teams losing and the West therefore scraping home for their first playoff appearance since 1975 and just third overall. The decider is appropriately dramatic, with AC making amends for its earlier wastefulness in a seesaw 7-5 win that propels them to a first postseason spot since their only previous time all the way back in 1969. An even more amazing achievement given they have done so without Monte Irvin and King Felix Hernandez, both of whom might make it back if they can reach the WS, as well as Walter Ball, who is done for the year. Just to highlight how tight things have been this year, no team either wins nor loses 100 games. Batting titles to Chris Chambliss (353, 1st) and rookie Pedro Guerrero, who hits 332. Birmingham's Keston Hiura fails to drive in a run over his final six games, leaving him tied with Rich Coggins for the single-season RBI record of 136. Johns Mayberry and Beckwith, each with 33, lead the HR list this season. Jim Jeffries leads either league with 21 wins, just one more than Bob Gibson and Gene Collins, who misses the TC by finishing runner-up to Chet Brewer's EL-low 2.92 ERA. Gene has a league-high 313 K, while the most Saves for 1981 are recorded by both Maceo Broadnax and Manuel Godinez with 40. A couple milestones reached late in the year, with Carlos Zambrano the second player (behind CC Sabathia) to reach 250 Wins and Jose Abreu the second player (behind Papi Ortiz) to reach 400 HR. 1981 EL Conference Championship Series
Fleet Conference Cuban Stars West (89-73) v Atlantic City Bacharach Giants (87-76) Best of seven, West with home-field advantage. The aforementioned litany of key injuries (Irvin, Jeffries, Ball) for the BGs skew this otherwise even series toward the CSW, whose big lineup heart might now just be a bit too much for the boys from the Boardwalk, although if all their young talent doesn't get overawed by the occasion then they are still right in this. The BGs acquit themselves admirably, but still find themselves outmanned and outgunned as the West dispose of them in six. Big Papi goes 8-for-24 with 3 HR to win the MVP. https://i.imgur.com/iYOk4Xe.png Weldy Conference Detroit Motown Stars (94-68) v Homestead Grays (92-70) Best of seven, Motown Stars with home-field advantage. The defending Champs will be hardened by a frantic stretch race, while that was not the case for a Grays unit that dominated its division. All the same, this is a top-shelf matchup between to outstanding squads and I'd be surprised if it doesn't go all the way. And surprised I am as the MoStars show in graphic fashion just what a powerhouse they are when they put their mind to it, absolutely demolishing the Grays in five with Jonathan Schoop named MVP. https://i.imgur.com/fFSWoEy.png https://i.imgur.com/2ucv565.png |
1981 Eclipse League World Series
Detroit Motown Stars v Cuban Stars West Best of seven, Motown Stars with home-field advantage. On paper, the 14th edition of the EL World Series looks a mismatch of biblical proportions, even more so with the CSW being without top-line CF Ender Inciarte and having Closer Harry Rhodes being under a bit of an injury cloud. But this is a real bunch of gamers and, with five of their starting lineup going deep 15 times or more this season, they have plenty of ways to beat an opponent. So underestimate them at your own peril. Despite themselves clearly being the EL's glamour club and reigning champs with wall-to-wall superstars at their disposal, I doubt Detroit will see the West as anything other than a dangerous and worthy opponent. They would feel confident they have the firepower to withstand any challenge, but this bunch will be vividly aware of their chance to make history here by becoming just the second club to successfully defend their title, after the 1970-71 Black Yankees. I do believe the MoStars will have to work for the four wins, nevertheless I expect them to lock them down in five or six. https://i.imgur.com/3HsJTB5.png https://i.imgur.com/isD1y0y.png https://i.imgur.com/K5u0N4O.png https://i.imgur.com/8D1awFr.png Well self-praise is no praise at all, but that's pretty much exactly how it goes in this series, with the MoStars winning in six but really being pushed to the limit. A couple of the final scorelines aren't reflective of how close the games are until late flurries by the Detroit bats blow the West out. There's little if anything Cristobal Torriente isn't capable of right now, so winning his second straight World Series MVP is a mere walk in the park for the mighty Cubano.
