If I'm not mistaken, for the Chicopee Braves is that basically Ebbets Field?

AROUND THE TOWN IN THE IPA
CRYSTAL LAKE SKIPPERS (aka Crushers 2002-2051) Owner: Flood Family Casino Enterprises GM/Manager: Duncan Welch Crystal Lake is the largest lake in Ruthlandia, situated in the southeastern corner of the country. The town, Crystal Lake, is located on a spit of land at the southwestern corner of the lake from which it got its name. Crystal Lake is south of Valka and just 25 miles across the lake. Belair Beach, San Dimas and Grand City are also close by. Crystal Lake is a polyglot town of 77,000 people who march to the beat of a different drummer. Crystal Lake is best known for its liberal politics. Think of San Francisco in the United States for a comparable culture. Environmentalists, Jesus Freaks, Rock 'n' Roll enthusiasts in a fairly free society. Locals claim they are not liberal, they are libertarians. Critics counter that residents aren't libertarians, they are libertines. European tourists compare the town to Amsterdam, but not quite as notoriously liberal. One thing for sure Crystal Lake is a mecca for tourism. It's a wide-open city where anything goes. It's a party-goers' paradise. The lowlands around the town are more properly classified as bogs. Glacial activity 10,000 years ago scooped out what would become Crystal Lake and dumped quite a moraine when retreating, forming the land that was settled in the late 1800's. The area never really did grow population-wise because of the swampy terrain. That's all changed. Crystal Lake was a planned town and came into being in the early 1920s when John William Flood began developing it. It was intended to be a summer resort getaway for the wealthy to escape the dog days of summer before the invention of air conditioning. It is laid out on a grid with north-south streets given names based on trees in alphabetical order (Aspen, Birch, Cedar...) and east-west streets given numbers (First, Second, Third...) and called avenues. Crystal Lake has always been a footloose and fun-loving town. in the 1920s, during the brief Ruthlandian prohibition experiment, they ran speakeasys and night clubs. In the 1950s, they built casinos. Present day Crystal Lake is a little Las Vegas. It's a party place. A tourist's paradise with little or no industry. Getting around Crystal Lake is pretty easy to do. The town was built around an electric traction trolley system that takes people everywhere. The town never adapted to the automobile, which is practically prohibited by ordinance today. It is a biker and walking society, that espouses pollution-free air, exercise and health. The baseball team has been in business in some form for more than 100 years. The original team name was the Crushers. It comes from a 1921 letter from the team owner to his manager on his vision for building the club. John William Flood wrote to the first ballfield manager Andy Capson: "I don't like watching a bunch of dandies or young boys prancing around the basepaths like thieving fools. Bunting is for the birds. I want to see men crush the ball." Hence, the Crushers were born. John William Flood IV owns the team now. He changed the team name to Skippers in the 2052 seasons. John William makes his money in the casino business and is rather indifferent about day-to-day baseball operations. Since he's getting up in age, he has been concerned about his legacy. He's been examining the Green Bay Packers business model closely and is seriously considering willing the club to the people of Crystal Lake. The Floods have always been shady characters. John Williams Flood II was considered a scamp, regularly testing the will of the ABA commissioner in the days of the company leagues. John Williams Flood III was too busy developing real estate to break the rules like his ancestors did. The team had and deserved its somewhat unsavory reputation in the amateur league days. The famed Islandian slugger, Herman "Baby" George, the most prolific home run hitter in the annals of Islandian amateur leagues, was the first manager of the Crystal Lake Crushers. When it comes to hitting a baseball, Baby George is "Mr. Baseball" in the Islands. There has never been anyone quite like him. George was a bon vivant and literally in a class by himself. George began as a pitcher and was a very good one, but his hitting prowess soon converted him into a fulltime position player. He holds the all-time career homer mark in the industrial leagues. He turned out to be a pretty darn good manager, too. And the fans loved him in Crystal Lake for his savoie-faire attitude and his 2 Pro Cup Trophies. George retired at age 90 in 2047 and turned the GM and managerial reins over to Duncan Welch, who starred for the Crushers from 2017 to 2029, helping them win 6 pennants and 2 Pro Cups (2020 and 2022). In 20 seasons Welch was a career 350-255 with a terrific 2.78 ERA. He was especially good in the postseason, compiling a superb 17-5 mark with a 2.50 ERA in 27 starts. Welch was elected to the Islandian Pro Alliance Hall of Fame in 2056. He skippered the club for 15 seasons, won 2 pennants in '58 and '59 and even nabbed the 2058 Pro Cup Trophy, the third time in the team's history. Paul Dillon is the present manager of the Skippers. He was quite a hitter in his 18 years with the club with a lifetime .323 BA, 2850 hits, 170 homers, 1215 RBIs and 1410 runs scored with 413 stolen bases... Dillon was a 3-time All-Star and the 2034 Rookie of the Year. He has had only modest success in his managerial tenure. The Crystal Lake Crushers amateur and industrial teams played in John William Flood Stadium in the 1920s. The name was shortened to JWF Stadium by the press and the public over the years. A new ballpark, Lakefront Stadium, was built in 1985 by the town council. Lakefront Stadium is located right at the water's edge on Crystal Lake. Fans get a magnificent view of the lake. On game days, the best way to get to the ball park is by taking The Traction to the stadium or by sailing up to the marina. The food is typical baseball fare that tries to cater to both tourists and to the whole Earth Day crowd. The hot dog is a foot-long kosher dog served on a dark brown wheat roll. The beers are local microbrews and all claim to be genetically-modified organism free. In his day Baby George was known to enjoy a lot of hot dogs and a few refreshing brews during the games. Lakefront Stadium (1985) Capacity: 10,500 Dimensions: Left Field Line - 340' Left Field - 370' Left Center - 405' Center Field - 400' Right Center - 381' Right Field - 370' Right Field Line - 340' |

YESTERDAY IN THE IPA
The Islandian Times Tuesday, September 17, 2019 Pro Cup Begins Tomorrow, Defending Champs Turon Favored The IPA Pro Cup playoffs get started tomorrow afternoon with the Elite 8 Series. The 8 division champions will be pitted against one another in the first round of the postseason. 6 of last year's participants are back again in another quest for the Pro Cup, symbolic of professional baseball supremacy in Islandia. Turon is the defending champion and is favored to repeat, but it will have a tough path to get through Ozarka and Rolling Hills, two very potent Tycobbian challengers. Rocky Rapids is the pick in the Ruthlandian Union, but it faces three fine teams in Eastshore, Taranto and Claxton. Most baseball analysts say the field is wide open with no clear-cut favorites. Only three times in Pro Cup history has the team with the best regular-season record managed to win it. Colfax did it in 2010, Far Mountain in 2012 and Turon last year. It is also rare for the favorite to win the crown. In the Ruthlandian Elite 8, two powerhouses face up right away. The Rocky Rapids Snappers will host Eastshore in a best-of-seven series. The Snappers won the match-up last year and then lost to the unheralded Ancona Elephants. Two heavy-hitting teams tangle in the other RU match-up. The Taranto Tars will be at home against the Claxton Diamonds. Taranto has one of the highest-scoring team in IPA history and the Diamonds are not far behind them. The Eastshore-Rocky Rapids victor is expected to reign supreme in the Ruthlandian Final 4 because of better pitching. Last year's Pro Cup winner Turon takes on the Luxora Zorros in the Tycobbian Elite 8. The Z's took them to 7 games last year. So the Typhoons know to be wary and not over confident. Nothing is a cinch in the playoffs. Many times in the past, underdogs have done well. Volusia (2001), Middlefield (2005), Wynnamac (2008) and Kenwood (2014) are examples of lowly-rated clubs that won the Pro Cup. The first two games will be played at Typhoon Stadium in Turon. In the other TU series, Rolling Hills Reds will be at home hosting the Ozarka Naturals. It's the Reds first postseason appearance since 2003, a gap of 16 years. |

The Islandian Times Sunday, September 22, 2019 2019 IPA Elite 8 Series (best-of-seven) Ruthlandian Union Taranto Trounces Claxton 7-2, Wins Elite 8 The Taranto Tars bats were just too much for the Claxton Diamonds as they finished them off in five games in the RU Elite 8 Series... The Tars trounced the Diamonds 7-2 in game 5 at Avalon Stadium in Claxton behind the solid 6-hit pitching by Yuri Dozhenko, a 43-year-old right-hander... Taranto clubbed losing pitcher Tom Dahl (0-1 18.00) for 6 runs in just 5 innings...the Tars racked up 10 hits and were paced by homers by RF Augie Marshall (.400) and LF Arnie Kennedy (.227)... Tar 1B Pietro Skrmetta (.389) had 2 hits and drove in 2 runs... Taranto will now advance to the RU Final 4 against the Rocky Rapids Snappers, who knocked off highly-rated Eastshore in four games. Ozarka won game five 1-0 and captured the TU Elite 8 Series four-games-to-one to move ahead to the Final 4 against the winner of the Luxora-Turon series... It was the second shutout of the series by 35-year-old Nawajuk (2-0 0.00), who only allowed 5 hits, struck out 3 and issued only 1 walk... 25-year-old Gaudet (0-2 2.25) was almost as good... He surrendered only 1 run on 5 hits, fanned 6 batters and walked 2 in defeat... Nawajuk also blanked Rolling Hills in game two 6-0 on 4 hits. |

Mercado was roughed up for 5 runs and 5 hits, although only 2 were earned... Defending Pro Cup champion Turon will now have to whip powerful Ozarka to get a chance to repeat... The Tycobbian Final 4 will begin on Wednesday in Turon. |
YESTERDAY IN THE IPA
The Islandian Times Tuesday, September 24, 2019 RU And TU Final 4s Start Tomorrow There were no real postseason surprises this time around. All of the clubs in the Ruthlandian and Tycobbian Unions Final 4 are ones forecast to be there. There are no underdogs or Cinderellas this season. Defending Pro Cup champion Turon is a slight favorite to win it all for the second straight year, but it will surprise no one if Taranto, Rocky Rapids or Ozarka are crowned the winner. The teams are very evenly matched. The 2019 IPA Final 4 gets underway tomorrow afternoon with Rocky Rapids hosting Taranto at Snapper Stadium in the clash for the Ruthlandian Union title. In Tycobbia it will be the Turon Typhoons being challenged by the Ozarka Naturals at Typhoon Stadium. The questions in the RU Final 4: Will Rocky Rapids strong staff be able to hold back the booming bats of the Taranto Tars? Can Joe Anderson (23-11 2.63), Junior Noland (20-11 3.08) and Don Chaney (17-13 2.83) cool off the red-hot Tars? Will the modest-hitting Snappers feast on the mediocre Taranto hurlers? Will Paul Shelton (.340/46/153/124), Carl Johnson (.312/29/91/100) and Rob Barton (.304/8/70/106) be outnumbered and outscored by Augie Marshall (.319/40/130/111), Denny Radke (.327/14/101/87), Ed Miles (.287/27/96/117), Phil Buckner (.314/11/79/133) and Arnie Kennedy (.303/29/80/103)? The key will be how well Tar pitchers Randy Pitri (8-3 4.32), Yuri Dozhenko (17-11 4.22) and Jimmy Mosley (15-16 4.61) can stop the Snapper batters? Taranto sustained a serious loss when ace Angelo Zinacola (21-9 3.94) came down with a tender shoulder after his last start and will be out for a few days and may miss several starts. Doctors say he might be recovered for games six and seven, if the series goes that far. Baseball pros are picking the Snappers to win because of the strong pitching and solid hitting. In the Tycobbian Final 4, Turon gets the edge in pitching with Nicky Engstrom (22-9 2.02), Shane Farmer (24-10 2.02) and Ted Farentino (19-13 3.67) favored over Ozarka's Benny Osterman (19-13 3.25), Yuka Nawajuk (19-13 2.78) and Howard Hutch (19-7 3.39). At the plate it's a toss-up between the Typhoons Clyde Kingsford (.339/54/151/127), Dominick DiCaprio (.306/22/108/86) and Mac McCurnan (.279/25/89/93) and the Naturals Andre Dumas (.277/34/100/84), Benny Rousseau (..308/28/89/74), Ken Mayberry (.347/6/62/105) and James Couch (.352/12/52/75). Forecasters are going with Turon's pitching and playoff experience, but not by much. Ozarka is a fine ball club, too. |

Joe Anderson (3-0 2.57) held the big Tar bats at bay, permitting only 4 hits with 6 Ks and 4 walks... only 2B Ed Miles (.429) did much damage with 2 hits, including a homer and 3 RBIs... meanwhile Rocky Rapids rocked Randy Pitri for 5 homers and Pat Pappas for one... 1B Don Timmons (.375) cracked 2 into the bleachers and batted in 4 runs, giving him 5 homers and 12 RBIs for the postseason... and RF Tiger Noland (.300), SS Joel Williams (.148), 2B Paul Shelton (.281) and CF Carl Johnson (.353) all connected for the distance... The Islandian Times Tuesday, October 2, 2019 Pro Cup Rated Toss-Up, Snappers Slight Edge Over Nats Both Pro Cup participants have really earned it. Rocky Rapids had to beat two very talented teams in the Eastshore Elegants and the Taranto Tars to capture the Ruthlandian crown and the Ozarka Naturals had to overcome the fine Rolling Hills Reds and the defending Pro Cup titleholder Turon to win the Tycobbian championship. The baseball prognosticators see this year's title clash as a toss-up between two very gifted and evenly-matched teams. Rocky Rapids has a little better pitching than Ozarka, while Ozarka get a slight edge in hitting. The experts are forecasting a whale of a series and that the Snappers will win in seven games. The deciding factor was home field advantage. That's how close it will be. Both clubs won 97 games in the regular season. The league commissioner decided to give the team with the best playoff record the home field advantage. Rocky Rapids swept both of its series and was 8-0, while Ozarka was 8-3. YESTERDAY IN THE IPA The Islandian Times Tuesday, October 8, 2019 Snappers Anderson Pro Cup MVP Rocky Rapids 32-year-old southpaw Joe Anderson was even better in the playoffs than he was in the regular campaign. Anderson, a 3-year veteran in the IPA, was picked the Pro Cup Most Valuable Player for 2019 by The Islandian Times. Anderson led the Snappers to the title with a sparkling 5-0 mark and a 1.94 ERA. During the regular season Anderson was 23-11 with a 2.63 ERA. Anderson won in a landslide over three of his mound teammates. Junior Noland was a very distance second in the voting with a 3-0 record and an outstanding 0.67 ERA. Don Chaney, another starter, was third. He posted a 2-0 record and a fine 1.67 ERA. Closer Milt Baker finished fourth with a 1-0 mark and 3 saves in 5 relief appearances. Baker didn't allow a run in 7 innings in the playoffs. YESTERDAY IN THE IPA The Islandian Times Sunday, October 13, 2019 Brewster Best Skipper In RU Eastshore's Killer Brewster has won the RU East flag for the past four years and got passed over most of the time for the Manager of the Year honor, but not this season. The Islandian Times presented the accolade to Brewster today in Eastshore. He guided the Elegants to the best record in the RU with a 97-57 record, which was tied with Rocky Rapids for the most wins. This is the second time Brewster has won the top skipper award. He also took it in 2016. The Snappers Ryan Noland was a close second. His Snappers racked up its third straight RU West pennant. Taranto's manager Tommaso Lazzorda also had a fine season and wound up third in the balloting. Lazzorda managed to lift the Tars up ahead of Ancona and Far Mountain in the RU North. Lazzorda squeezed enough pitching out of the Tars to win the division flag with a 90-64 record. RH Reds Christianson Deemed Top TU Manager The last time the Rolling Hills Reds made the Pro Cup playoffs was in 2003. Last year they were fifth in the standings. This season the Reds climbed up to first place and took the TU West title and won the Manager of the Year Award for Matty Christianson. Rolling Hills ended the year with an excellent 93-61 mark, the third-best record in the TU. Christianson was also selected top TU skipper in 2007. Finishing second in a close vote was Huroko Uchiyama of the Ginza Ninjas. Uchiyama's club shot up from 7th to second this season, outdone in the TU South only by perennial power Turon. Winding up tied for third in the best skipper poll were Turon's Whitey Richburn and Ozarka's Joe Mac Carney. Richburn was atop the TU South for the fourth successive year and topped the league with a 99-55 record, while Carney piloted the Naturals to their fifth division crown in a row with a fine 97-57 mark. |

Got back home Saturday evening... ain't no place like the good old USA... even with all of its problems... it is really good to be home.
Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Poland and Germany are nice places to visit and might be wonderful places to live... but I'm glad to be home in the good old USA... yep, it is true -- there ain't no place like home. |
Good to have you back, EC. :eatpop:

I've never been on a Viking River cruise. I've been on one Carnival (Victory), 4 Royal Caribbeans (Jewel of the Seas 3x, Freedom of the Seas), and one Norwegian (Gem). |

Wow... you really are a world traveler... we have only been on two Viking tours... several years ago we took a trip on the Volga from Moscow to St. Petersburg... I prefer riverboat tour to the ocean trip... fewer people and much better food... the restaurants on the ocean trip were not that good... but the buffet was fairly good... the food on the Russian trip was outstanding... something good at every meal... not so on the ocean boat. |

BOTH AVOID SWEEPS BY SKIPPERS AND SUNSETS IN IPA FINAL 4 SERIES Yep, the Eastshore Cotton Kings and the Chicopee Braves are still alive and kicking in the Ruthlandian and Tycobbian Titles Series... the Cotton Kings evaded elimination with a 7-6 win over Crystal Lake and the Braves escaped a sweep with an 8-1 drumming of the Summerland Sunsets... game 5 in the best-of-seven series are slated for this afternoon. 2074 IPA Final 4 Series Stars of the Day Attachment 887578 Attachment 887579 Attachment 887580 Attachment 887581 |

Friday, October 18, 2074 SUMMERLAND AND CRYSTAL LAKE QUALIFY FOR PRO CUP SERIES Though the baseball scribes didn't think the Summerland Sunsets and the Crystal Lake Skippers would beat the slightly-favored Chicopee Braves and Eastshore Cotton Kings, they did... and they did it in 5 games. In the 5th games of the series the Skippers edged the Cotton Kings 7-6 to take the Ruthlandian Union crown, while the Sunsets sparkled in an 8-4 victory over the Braves and won the Tycobbian Union title. So now the stage is set for the showdown of all showdowns, the Pro Cup Series... the 2074 edition will feature Crystal Lake seeking its 4th Islandian Pro Cup Trophy... Summerland is hoping and praying they will win their first Pro Cup... it will all come to fruition in the next week... the best-of-seven IPA Pro Cup Series 2074 IPA Final 4 Series Stars of the Day. If I have this correct, Crystal Lake has won 3 Pro Cups and Summerland hasn't won any?
|
Quote:
Summerland made it to the Pro Cup Finals in 2040 and lost a 7-game series to the Radford Bulls... the Sunsets won the first two games and lost the series... they are currently managed by Jayson Hallstrom, one of the stars of the team that season... Hallstrom is a IPA Hall of Fame pitcher with 368 wins and 274 losses and a 2.65 ERA. |

Friday, October 19, 2074 DARK HORSES VIE FOR CHERISHED PRO CUP TROPHY: IPA SHOWDOWN BETWEEN CRYSTAL LAKE AND SUMMERLAND Looking back a few weeks ago, according to script the Pro Cup Series was expected to be a showdown between Oxford and Eastshore... instead it will be the Ruthlandian Union champion Crystal Lake and the Tycobbian Union titlist Summerland vying for the much- cherished Islandian Pro Alliance Pro Cup Trophy... the top picks to capture the Pro Cup Trophy this year, #1 Oxford, #2 Chicopee and #3 Eastshore have withered in the wind, while the #4 Skippers and the #7 Sunsets have blossomed and survived... the 74th edition of the Pro Cup Series begins in just 3 days... it will open up in Crystal Lake at Lakefront Stadium this Monday afternoon... the hometown Skippers (97-57) will have the homefield advantage over the Sunsets (92-62) in the best-of-seven series... Both teams have played very well at home and on the road in the playoffs this season... Summerland is 4-1 out of town and Crystal Lake is 3-1 at home. Crystal Lake will be seeking its 4th Pro Cup... the Skippers won it in 2020, 2022 and 2058... they also made the Pro Cup Finals in 2027 and 2034, but were defeated by Southport in a 4-game sweep and by North Hills in 6 games... Summerland has never won it... they were beaten in a 7-game series in 2040 by the Radford Bulls... this is just their 6th postseason appearance... Crystal Lake has made the playoffs 13 times in the club's history. To reach the apex of IPA baseball this season, Crystal Lake has had the easier road... they disposed of lightly-regarded Stoner in 5 games and then they took care of the highly-regarded Eastshore Cotton Kings in 5 games as well... the Skippers are 8-2 in the postseason. In comparison Summerland had to beat the Pro Cup favorite Oxford Red Caps... they took care of them in 6 games... then they upended the second-best playoff team, the Chicopee Braves in just 5 games... the Sunsets have proven themselves to be a solid ballclub... Crystal Lake will be favored to win the Pro Cup this year by the press and broadcasters, but Summerland will be the sentimental favorite. Both clubs are quite similar... they depend on the bats to get them by... they are contact hitters and hit for average... they do not depend on the longball... neither Crystal Lake, nor Summerland has strong pitching... Crystal Lake will win if pitchers Lew McGrane (14-4/2.52 ERA), Noel Arboneaux (10-5/2.14 ERA), Lloyd Mason (17-7/3.72 ERA) and closer Val Renfroe (11-10/3.32 ERA/22 saves/89 games) regain regular-season form... only Mason has performed well in the playoffs with a 2-0 mark and a 0.50 ERA in 2 starts... McGrane (3-0/3.25 ERA), Arboneaux (3-1/6.00 ERA) and Renfroe (0-1/7.00 ERA/2 saves/5 games) have struggled in the postseason. At the plate in the playoffs Sammy Silfen (.385/1 HR/8 RBI/5 R/5 SB), Sookie Murphy (.273/3 HR/6 RBI/13 R/5 SB) and Gino Lorenzetti (.265/1 HR/8 RBI/8 R) have done it all for Crystal Lake... the top guns in the regular season were Cookie Garland (.351/20 HR/106 RBI/105 R), Lorenzetti (.310/11 HR/97 RBI/70 R), Vern Gosdin (.294/8 HR/68 RBI/98 R/45 SB) and Jeff Setser (.272/20 HR/98 RBI/105 R/31 SB)... the Skippers really need some more help from the latter group in the Pro Cup Series... they need them to win the Pro Cup this year. Considering stronger opposing teams, Summerland's staff has performed pretty well in the playoffs... Mort Cassidy (3-0/3.21 ERA) has been the most dependable starter... the bullpen has been very good so far with Jason Irons (1-0/0.82 ERA/3 saves/6 games) and Jake Oliver (1-0/1.50 ERA/3 games)... ace Luc Cochrane (17-3/2.45 ERA) has to pitch like he did in the regular season... Cochrane has not been effective in the postseason... he is 1-1 in 4 starts with 4.67 ERA... #3 starter James Marley (9-5/3.78 ERA) and #4 starter Jim Hackett have to do the job better in the Pro Cup Series, too. Summerland's offense has done quite well in the playoffs, sparked by Carroll Coxe (.447 BA/5 HR/16 RBI/12 R/9 SB), Neal Crichton (.239/2 HR/11 RBI/8 R/5 SB), Armin Hauer (.333/2 RBI/7 R/7 SB), Arie Vermeer (.311/2 RBI/7 R/4 SB) and Floris Braam (.294/1 HR/6 RBI/3 R)... Crooner McCollum (.225/1 HR/7 RBI/6 R/2 SB) has been productive, too... the big bats during the season were Crichton (.299/22 HR/96 RBI/82 R/47 SB), Coxe (.261/12 HR/83 RBI/91 R/38 SB), Hauer (.311 BA/2 HR/59 RBI/89 R/53 SB) and Arjen Van Halen (.295/3 HR/65 RBI/91 R). 2074 IPA Pro Cup Forecast: On closer examination, Summerland just might come away with its first Pro Cup Trophy... we're picking the Sunsets to win in 6 games... better pitching and solid bats will do it... Summerland has stood out against some of the top teams in the IPA this season... you have to give them credit for that. Tuesday, October 23, 2074 SUNSETS ROUT SKIPERS IN FIRST GAME OF THE IPA PRO CUP SERIES Playing like a "bats out of hell" the Summerland Sunsets took the first step in their pursuit of their first-ever Pro Cup Trophy by routing the Crystal Lake Skippers 11-3 in the first game of the 2074 Islandian Pro Cup Pro Cup Series... With jg2977's great help and advice, I have greatly increased the enjoyment of the 3D animation by creating custom views.
They are far superior to my first attempts at creating custom camera views. For you who play out the games, I very highly recommend custom views. |
