Trade: Scarce For Hall

On Tuesday April 15, 1975 the Cincinnati Reds traded pitcher Tom Hall to the New York Mets for pitcher Mac Scarce.

Cincinnati Falls to LA 2-3

The Reds looked to continue their roll against the Dodgers on Tuesday night in Los Angeles as they scored a run in each of the first two innings. The Dodgers would hold them from there, however, and it would be LA's game the rest of the way. The Dodger's big blow came off the bat of Jim Wynn. In the bottom of the second Wynn, after back to back singles for the LA, planted a ball 417 feet into the left field bleachers. That's where the games scoring would end and the Dodger bullpen of Juan Marichal, Jim Brewer, and Mike Marshall would hold the Reds scoreless for the final 3.1 frames of action. The Reds and Dodgers will be back at it again tomorrow night, as they face one another for game three of this four game set.

The Cincinnati Reds improved to 6-3 wednesday night, but victory did not come without a cost. Joe Morgan belted his first home run of the 1975 season on the first pitch he saw in the first inning off Dodger starter Andy Messersmith. The game remained 1-0 Redlegs until the bottom of the 6th, when a collective gasp in Cincinnati could be heard from LA. After Bill Buckner singled and stole second, Johnny Bench went down holding his arm after fielding a bunt by Dodger Lee Lacy. Bench would leave the game immediately with what he would call later a "sprained elbow". According to Bench he will sit tomorrow and be back in the lineup by Saturday. Sparky Anderson said after the game that he is going to be a little more cautious and that Reds fans shouldn't expect to see Bench back behind the plate for at least a couple weeks. Two batters later, Bench's replacement Bill Plummer missed a fastball that hit him in the mitt. While Plummer scrambled to look for the ball that was directly underneath him Billy Buckner came in to score to tie the game at 1 run apiece. That's the way the game would stay until the top of the 11th. Cesar Geronimo singled, followed by a Pete Rose double, and a Joe Morgan walk that left the bases loaded. Bill Plummer was coming up to the plate 5 innings later with a chance to redeem himself. Plummer didn't disappoint, delivering a sac fly to left field to break the tie and the games scoring drought. Pedro Borbon came on in the bottom half to get the final 3 outs, inducing Willie Crawford into a 4-6-3 double play to end the ballgame and get his first save. The Reds will be back in action tomorrow night here in LA for the final game of the series as well as the final game of this west coast stand.

Reds Embarrassed: Dodgers Claim Series Finale 10-2

The Cincinnati Reds will leave Los Angeles and head back to the Queen City with, no doubt, an awful taste in their mouths. The Reds were flattened 10-2 Sunday afternoon and were pretty dreadful in every aspect of the game. The floodgates creeped open in the bottom of the 4th for the Dodgers when Jack Billingham walked Steve Garvey to lead off the inning who was shortly placed in scoring position by a single off the bat of Willie Crawford. The next batter, Jim Wynn, would float a routine pop-up into left-center that would eventually go for a double due to a defensive debacle by George Foster. Foster's blunder would allow the Dodgers to tie and they wouldn't look back from there. Joe Ferguson laced an RBI triple in the bottom half of the 6th to give LA their first lead. Ferguson would then score on the very next pitch on a ball catcher Bill Plummer just flat out missed. Later in the inning with two outs, another ball that escaped Bill Plummer would advance Ivan DeJesus to third. From there he would score on a single to right by Dodger pitcher Don Sutton on the very next pitch. Plummer, who's filling in for injured Reds' catcher Johnny Bench, looked helpless all night behind the plate, allowing the Dodgers to advance bases at will. A Lee Lacy RBI single later and the Reds were down four runs heading into the 7th, where once again LA would increase their lead. Willie Crawford and Jim Wynn reached base to start the frame, where they would both eventually cross the plate on ground ball outs. After the Reds cut into the lead to make it 7-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Dodgers erupted for three more runs to put the game out of reach. Cincinnati reliever Clay Kirby walked in two runs and gave up a sac fly to Crawford to put the score where it would remain final at a 10-2 stomping at the hands of the Dodgers. The Reds (6-4) will be back in Cincy tomorrow night as they take on the Houston Astros for the first of a four game weekend series that concludes with a doubleheader on Sunday.

Ladies and gentlemen there may be some bad news for the rest of the National League and some good news for the Queen City. Charlie Hustle has come to life. The Cincinnati third baseman entered the game Friday night with a sub .200 batting average. However, in the bottom of the fifth Pete Rose connected with a fastball that whistled into the right-center gap to give the Reds their first run and cut an Astro lead to 2-1. The game remained that way a while until Rose led off the bottom of the 8th with another double. After a Joe morgan walk, Rose was brought around to score thanks to a double off the left field wall by Tony Perez. Morgan then came home to score on a George Foster single up the middle to give the Reds a 3-2 lead heading into the 9th. Rawly Eastwick, who had tossed a perfect 8th came back out for the 9th and immediately surrendered a single to Greg Gross and then a double to Jose Cruz to put 2 runners in scoring position. Reds manager Sparky Anderson had seen enough and made the call to the bullpen for left-hander Will McEnaney. McEnaney walked Rob Andrews to load the bases. He would then induce a ground ball to third base where Pete Rose would stab it and get the force out at home. McEnaney got Bob watson and Skip Jutze to hit twin fly balls to Dave Concepcion and the Reds escaped victorious. The Reds (7-4), will host the Astros again tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 PM EST.

On Saturday afternoon the Reds picked up right where they'd left off on Friday night. George Foster got the scoring started for the Redlegs when he blasted a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second to tie the ballgame at a run apiece. In the third Tony Perez knocked in Don Gullett and Pete rose, who reached on an error and single respectively, when he laced a 2-out 2 RBI double to left field. Then in the fourth, Cesar Geronimo drove in Dave Concepcion with a triple only to be driven in by pitcher Don Gullett on the next pitch to make the score 5-1 Reds. The Reds would hold onto the lead up until the 8th when it was 7-3 now and turn the game over to Will McEnaney and Rawly Eastwick, who each pitched a scoreless inning to shut it down in the 8th and 9th. Cincinnati improves to 8-4 on the season and will be back in action action against the Astros tomorrow afternoon in the series finale.

Reds Route Astros 8-2 in Opener: Geronimo Blasts 2 HR's

Gary Nolan went the distance Sunday afternoon as the Reds thumped the Houston Astros 8-2 in game one of a doubleheader. Nolan scattered seven hits, gave up 2 earned runes, walked none, and struck out two over the course of the 9 innings. In four starts this season the 26 year-old righty is 2-0 with a 0.93 ERA in 29 innings pitched. Nolan received a lot of backing Sunday thanks in large part to the production of new temporary leadoff man, Cesar Geronimo. Geronimo blasted his first two homers on the season, driving in a total of four runs to help improve the Reds record to 9-4.
