Salt Lake City, UT - Smith's Ballpark

The latest in this little project is Smith's Ballpark in Salt Lake City. It claims to have the best backdrop in baseball, and after looking at pictures for the last day, I kinda have to agree.

The park is at over 4000 feet and a little small, so it plays like Coors Field. It's particularly generous to left handed batters.

Also, thanks to eriqjaffe for letting me use his scoreboard in right field. I think it added the right pop to the model.

A little bit later, but here is Dunkin Donuts Park. It's a pretty beautiful stadium with an interesting history - apparently the original contractors were fired after the park opened a year late, and it almost didn't come to pass. I'm glad it did though - it looks pretty great.

The stadium is also on a pretty narrow block, so I spent a lot of time on Clem's looking at Baker Bowl/Shibe Park for inspiration, including the double decker outfield bleachers.

The park plays hitter friendly, particularly because it is so small, and is pretty home run friendly.

Thanks for Dunkin Donuts Park. I live 20 miles from Hartford. Now Chompers and Chew Chew (the mascots) have a place in the OOTP world.

Boise Cascade Ballpark - Boise, ID

This one is actually based off of some concepts for a new minor league park in Boise. I took a few liberties with the structure of the park, but kept the field shape and location.

The park is at elevation, so it plays pretty hitter friendly, especially for left handed batters.

Here's Durham Athletic Park, home of the Durham Bulls. It's technically based on Durham Bulls Athletic Park (turns out they are two separate stadiums), but you know, making things more neutral and all that. The stadium is situated in a mixed use area, which I tried to reflect in the surrounding buildings.

The park plays slightly hitter friendly, particularly with the short walls (only 305 to left, but with a 32 foot barrier there.) In general it is more friendly to righties than lefties.

Thanks! It's a lot of fun for me - I've always been a bit of a ballpark nerd, so it's fun to create stadiums and parks that I (and others) can use. Thank you for your feedback and encouragement in the process. :)

Shaw Park - Winnipeg, MB

Jparker2112 gave me some help in identifying Canadian cities that could use parks, so I'll be mixing them into this process as we go. This one is from Winnipeg - Shaw Park. It's a traditional quarter circle outfield on a pretty narrow block, so I changed the right field side (making it more open air.)

The field plays pretty neutral, with the usual Canadian depression of home runs and extra base hits.

So.... initially I looked at those pictures and was like, I have no idea how those fit together. But, I set off making the stadium ... and then realized it was five different concepts... so I merged some of them together and added a few of my own ideas and, well here you go.

Polar Park follows the outline of Fenway (it turns out that Boston apparently is having all of its minor league stadiums reflect the Boston outfield, which simultaneously makes sense and makes me a bit sorry for all those citizens shelling out to make sure Boston left fielders are marginally better) and the park factors are pretty identical - low homer, slightly batter friendly, lots of doubles, no triples. (Also, thanks again to Eriqjaffe for the hand operated scoreboard.)

Also, I'm going to start a new thread to better organize these stadiums and solicit input from y'all. You can find it here. This expanded well beyond what I thought it would when I started out with Portland last month - thanks everyone for the feedback along the way!

drksd4848 01-11-2019 09:59 AM

I cant believe you actually DID IT!!!!! WOW!!

Seriously, I just tossed the pictures up there half kidding... thinking it's kind of impossible to put that one together. I didn't think you were really going to try it.

I'm amazed!!! Again, OUTSTANDING work. You are a juggernaut with these parks. Can't thank you enough.

http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium...ie_zephyr1.jpg

I kept the open spaces between the levels and the field outline and changed just about everything else, including adding outfield luxury boxes that are meant to evoke a French Quarter feel. Total seats are about 40,000, and it's a pretty pitcher friendly park in real life (I nerfed it a bit), but it will probably be the most pitcher friendly park in your league.

Having been to the Shrine on Airline for a few Zephyrs games over the years, I would say the Shrine is a functional ballpark and nothing more. I have not been back since they rebranded as the BabyCakes, and I live about 45 minutes from the park. That's how unremarkable that park is.

Is the centerfield wall missing?

No - the wall in center field is a chain link fence, which shows up in sketchup but appears invisible in OOTP because of how it renders the stadiums. The team that created the Howard Terminal sketches prioritized a park-like feel, and as such they made the center field wall a see through fence:

In the latest iteration they added the batter's eye in center field, and I haven't added that in yet (or the new bullpens.)

nielsoncp, first off, I want to thank you for your amazing work. I'm using a few of your stadiums, including this one, in my new fictional league and it's really brought my league to life. :flowers:

I'm having display issues with only this stadium, and I'm wondering if you (or anyone else) can help me out. I don't know if it's a problem with the stadium or my settings. The issue is the "sky" appears to "slice" through the background and hide some of the stadium and skyline. I've attached a screenshot showing what I mean - note that there appears to be a hard edge to this, which you can see under the scoreboard near the 10TV logo.

Is this something I need to adjust on my end, or is it part of the stadium file? I'm playing windowed mode, 1920 x 1080.

nielsoncp 05-08-2019 02:48 PM

Thanks for letting me know Boof. I probably won't have a chance to take a look in depth until the middle of June - I have a pretty heavy travel schedule ahead, but I'll try to take a look and figure out what's happening.

I took the field design and location (and a couple other features) from the current home of the Brooklyn Cyclones for this particular stadium. It's 37,500 and plays relatively neutrally.

The park plays pretty pitcher friendly in real life, which is reflected in the model. There is a slight advantage for left handed hitters, particularly with the short wall in left field.

Thanks CD. A lot of the parks in this thread have errors in them - it was part of my learning process at the time. The models are all fixed now, but I decided I didn't want to put the time into fixing all the pictures. At some point I may go back and update, but for now they will stay put.

Clovidequano Dovatha 03-21-2020 10:49 AM

Thank you, fine sir, for the updated information. Keep up the great work, in any case, I hope. I'll be looking for the other parks mainly or totally featuring Low's logos for certain teams I'm going to be adding soon to the relevant dynasty or dynasties, for sure, just so you know. May you and yours all stay as safe and all as possible, in these challenging times. Lord willing, of course, that is. CD out.

Thanks to Silvam, adion and eriqjaffe for all of their work on stadiums - I've been following from afar the last few years and decided to try my hand at one, and the texture databases you all have built up proved invaluable.
