Okay. This one was a toughie. I worked with the image you submitted and had very little success. Examining the image, it would appear to be an "enhanced" image. I did a google search and located what would appear to be the original source of your attempt. I tried cloning the face and creating the missing section with better if unimpressive result. I recolored it and experimented with the blurring tool in GIMP. Not great but the best I am able to do with it. I hope you can make use of it.

Good job. It is hard to get a good final result when the starting image is so rough. Much of the "magic" you like to talk about is the benefit of having a good starting point as I am sure you have discovered. Best wishes to you with your medical issues.
