Here is a photo of Leroy Haynes as a member of the McKinley High School Panthers in 1962. Leroy was an outfielder in the Cubs organization from 1964 to '70. This image is from his obituary in 2020.

Leroy Haynes

Leroy Haynes did advance to the Chicago Cubs' spring training camp in 1967 as a non-roster invitee.

Thanks for the info. Looking at Leroy's numbers he had power and speed with some decent numbers but never extraordinary. But you have to have talent and potential to stay in one organization for seven years. I wonder if their is a spring training photo of Leroy Haynes in a Chicago Cubs uniform?

Merkle posted one of Haynes in a Chicago Cubs uniform on this thread in 2016, but he has removed it, so I don't feel free to share it. It was part of a group photo taken of the Cubs' Rookie League team in 1964. Perhaps you can find it elsewhere.

The place on this thread where the photo had been is on the link below, posted with a date of 12-19-2016.

He is named in a caption to a photo in the Alexandria News Leader (Sun, Feb 26, 1967 ·Page 10), and there is a player in a Cubs uniform. Not the clearest photo.

Raul Ortega

While besting the bushes for 1972 expansion talent I found these neat looking Venezuelan baseball cards featuring a very obscure player Raul Ortega. So obscure his only baseball reference statistics are a three game stint in the Giants organization in 1970. Playing for Fresno in the California League Raul was 0 for 10 at the plate. Like his cards , no position or defensive stats are listed. It appears he did play several years in his home country... The first card is from a 1964 set and in the one featuring the uniform of the Magallanes Navigantes he appears older.

Listed at 5'7 169 Lbs and as a right handed hitter and thrower I am making the very elementary guess that Raul Ortega was a middle infielder and predominantly a second baseman. Their is also a Baseball Reference of a Raul Ortega playing in the 1970 Mexican League for the Saltillo Sarapes. Again only three games. No position or defensive information . In fact no info at all. Perhaps the same man. Perhaps not. In any event here are the card images of the mysterious Raul Ortega.

If you aren't aware of it, the Trading Card Database might be worth checking out: https://www.tcdb.com/Teams.cfm/sp/Baseball?MODE=SELECT

Yes, a great resource. Thank you!

Cusick 02-24-2025 06:53 AM

The back of Raul Ortega's 1967 Venezuelan card says he was a back-up outfielder and pinch hitter that previous year, although he was equally capable of playing the infield. His baseball-reference entry for 1970 under the Saraperos de Saltillos team of the Mexican League has him pegged as a shortstop, if it's the same player. I found an entry for him with Saltillos in the Mexican League Encyclopedia, which matched B-R.com's .500 batting average for him. But strangely, there was no listing for him in the major alphabetical listing of batters from all teams in the league, where one can usually find the position played.

Rick Underwood

Here is a 1967 card from a Topps Venezuela set featuring Richard "Rick" Underwood an outfielder in the Indians organization who expanded his versatility by picking up a catcher's mitt, He hit the ball well until reaching the AAA level though he didn't embarrass himself, His baseball career ended abruptly in 1969.

I have included a translation of the Espanol on the back of his card.

The Cleveland Indians have him as one of their top prospects to the point that to consider allowing Luis Tiant with Caracas to sign and use Underwood as a catcher. He made his debut in 1965 as an outfielder in Dubuque. This year he served in the military and when he joined the club late he helped out in 2 games as pinch hitter and driving in the tying or winning runs.

Price Thomas

Are there any images/cards of Price Thomas as Brewers minor leaguer. rlumpkin1 had posted photos of Thomas as high school pitcher and hitter. I have found one image of fan created card featuring a slender high school version of Price Thomas as a Seattle Pilot. Apparently he grew to 6'2 190 and was a solid hitter at the A level for 4 years in the Brewers org. His baseball career end at 21.

Thanks in advance.

Rick Underwood

Rick was on the Indians' spring roster in 1967 and 1968.

I did some searching for Price Thomas, but could only find photos of him in high school. Your best bet might be to try writing the library in Danville, Illlinois, to see if they could search microfilm of the local newspaper there.

PinsonHOF 02-26-2025 05:36 PM

Thank you for looking. I appreciate your efforts. Odd how a player and his four year quest can disappear like that. I will try your suggestion.

Looking for photo of Andrew Richard Dustal played in the Reds System. Thank You in advance.
