March 5th, 1987

We are facing LaMarr Hoyt and the Phillies. Terry Mulholland is going for the Giants.

I led off the game by flying out to Tim Raines in left.

I got the 1st out in the bottom half, grabbing a Juan Samuel grounder.

I then got the 1st out in the 2nd as well, handling a Dwight Evans grounder. The Phils did open the scoring that frame when Bo Jackson scored from 2nd on a Ray Knight single.

Phillies lead 1-0.

I led off the 3rd by popping out to Juan Samuel at 2nd.

For the 3rd straight inning, I got the 1st guy out - this time it was a Ken Jackson grounder.

We tied it up in the 4th when Bob Brenly scored from 2nd on an Alan Cockrell double. I grounded out to end the inning.

Game is tied 1-1.

Terry came out o the game after the 4th, as expected, but he was complaining up a problem with his back. Hopefully it isn't serious.

Mark Clear took over in the 5th. He pitched one and then Pat Perry took over. He gave up two hits out of the three batter he faced and then Nestor went to Frank Williams.

I left the game in the 7th.

We ended up losing 6-2.

I went 0 for 3.

Giants lead 4-0.

Mark Salas led off the 2nd with a solo homer.

Giants lead 4-1.

I led off the 2nd by walking again. With one out I stole 2nd and moved to 3rd on an errant throw. I scored on a Robby Thompson groundout.

Giants lead 5-1.

I got the 1st out in the 4th, grabbing a Salas grounder.

Giants lead 8-2.

I left the game in the 6th.

I walked and scored twice while going 0 for 1 and stealing two bags.

Apparently Terry Mulholland's back isn't a problem. He is just going to take it easy for a bit.

We won 12-1.

March 8th, 1987

Today it is Joe Johnson and the Braves. The Giants are pitching Bruce Ruffin and I am starting at short.

The Giants has Eric Show going. He got in trouble early, giving up a three run homer to Leon Durham in the 1st.

Pirates lead 3-0.

I came up with two out in the 3rd, and Bobby Grich on 2nd. I walked. Mike Aldrete singled, scoring Bobby and sending me to 3rd. The two of us are left there.

I was lifted for a pinch hitter in the 8th.

There was no more scoring.

After the game we found out the team signed 36 year old vet Doyle Alexander. It was a minor league deal, but like all the vets they brought in, they are giving him a shot in spring training.

March 10th, 1987

Once again John Wasem was scheduled to start instead of me and once again I got the nod at the last minute. I am not sure what is going on.

Anyway, Doyle Alexander is getting the start against the Rick Mahler and the Reds.

The Reds got to him in the 1st when Eric Davis singled home Will Clark from 2nd with two out.

I led off our half by grounding out to Wade Rowden at 2nd. Mike ALdrete followed with a s solo shot and later that inning Steve Stanicek scored on a Bobby Grich single.

March 11th, 1987

The Giants have WIllie Fraser facing the Astros and Derek Livernois.

I lead off the game by taking a walk. At 1 &1 they tried a pitch out when I wasn't running, but I guess I strayed a little far so catcher Craig Biggio tried to pick me off 1st. He threw it away and I went to 2nd anyway.
With one out I stole 3rd and then scored on a Steve Stanicek single.

Giants lead 1-0.

I came up in the 2nd with one out and Alan Cockrell on 2nd. I grounded one to Dickie Thon but he made a mess of it and I was safe on his error. Alan moved to 3rd. I quickly stole 2nd. We are unable to cash in.

In the bottom half Jeffrey Leonard hit one deep to tie the game. Later Thon scored on a Tim Jones groundout. I should have gotten the last out but after fielding a Wes Clements grounder I threw it away. Error on me. It was costly as Clements ended up scoring on a Livernois single.

Astros lead 3-1.

They struck again in the 3rd when Glenn Davis scored on a Dave Gallagher double.

Astros lead 4-1.

I came up with two out in the 4th and grounded out to Thon. This time he made the play.

I got the 1st out in the bottom half, grabbing a Clements grounder. Before the inning was up, though, Keith Hernandez scored on a Biggio single.

Astros lead 5-1.

In the 6th Mike Aldrete hit a pinch-hit, two out, two run homer. I was lifted for a pinch hitter after that.

The game ended up going long. We lost 6-5 in 15 innings.

In the 6th we changed thing sup with a Priske - Thompson - Aldrete double play.

I was lifted in the 6th but it was during a 4 run inning for the good guys.

In the bottom of the 8th we got another run as Eddie Milner scored on a Kelvin Torre double.

Giants lead 6-0.

That was the final.

The bad news from the game was Mike Aldrte being scratched with back problems. Word is he will moss the start of the season but should be back in mid-April.

March 22nd, 1987

It is my 19th birthday today. Back home that would mean going out for a drink with my friends. Here in Arizona and even in California the drinking age is 21. How bizarre is that? How hold do you have to be to go to war? Yet you can't have a beer?

Oh well. No big deal. Spring training is more important any way.

Today the Giants (Eric Show) are playing the Reds (Tom Browning).
