54-44 Royals lead AL Central at All Star Break

4 Attachment(s)
Ten games above .500 and a 5½ game lead in the AL Central is a nice place to be for the 2031 Royals (54-44) but all is not as perfect as it would seem. A run differential of just +14 tells a tale of a team exceeding it’s expected record by 4 games, with divisional rivals a lot closer in performance than the standings suggest. That first half performance by predicted record would have the Royals in the midst of the Wild Card battle in the American League.

This mixed performance was highlighted when All Star selections came around, the Royals halving their representation. Wen-Hui Pan (1 IP, 1H, 0R) was selected for his first All Star appearance, while Bobby Witt Jr. (0-1, 1E) made his 4th as the American League dispatched the National League 11-3.

Attachment 1016062

Once again, the Royals have had an up and down season, winning months followed by .500 months so far. The bats have been quite ‘Royal’ with a strong ability to hit offsetting the failure to hit many balls out of the park. Third in hits, and 5th in average and OBP, hasn’t translated into runs yet, the team sitting 9th in the AL in runs scored with only 104 HRs hit so far this season.

The bullpen continues to be one of the best in the business with the 3rd best ERA in the AL although the starters have slipped back in 2031, down to 9th with a 4.51 ERA. The defence remains elite in Zone Rating, and the team has already struck out over 1000 batters (1010, 1st). Letting opponents walk (11th) and giving up HRs (10th) has been a problem they will hope to address over the final third of the season.

Attachment 1016061

Jonathan Gerew’s (92 wRC+) bat hasn’t quite matched his 2030 to date but he is close enough to league average that his plus catching is more than acceptable. Dave Holcombe (86 wRC+) has struggled a little more but a walk rate of over 10% helps to keep innings alive.

Luke Adams (68 wRC+) has been the loser from Jeremy Rogerson’s (98 wRC+) emergence at 3B as it has seen Isaac Paredes (128 wRC+) moved to 1B, where his bat has been strong even if his glove is a big downgrade on Adams.

Nick Loftin (-60 wRC+) was hurt in the 7th game of the season, and won’t be back until late September. Gregory Barrios (92 wRC+) has been the everyday replacement and has shown some improvement on previous years. Surprisingly he has not been strong defensively, and neither has Kiyotake Takenake (59 wRC+), who was called up after his strong Spring but has really struggled and this, his age 30 season, may be his only time in the Big Leagues.

Rogerson has only been league average but is a strong defender and the Royals have trust in his bat to come through in time.

Bobby Witt Jr. (116 wRC+) started the season slowly but a .387 OPB in June has him back on track and rewarded with his 4th All Star appearance.

Hunter Owen (119 wRC+) leads the Royals with 25 HRs from the DH position, slugging at a .510 rate.

The Royals centerfield moves over the offseason backfired as, after Sheng-En Lin (68 wRC+) got hurt prior to the season, Cristhian Vaquero (58 wRC+) got hurt in the first game of the season and missed 7 weeks. MiL FA signing Dominic Fletcher (59 wRC+) was called up and, while his bat has been cold, his 7.3 ZR demonstrates his worth to the team.

Wyatt Langford (87 wRC+) has not been the bat needed by the Royals and his $10m contract for 2032 is not looking attractive for the Royals at this point and could see movement ahead of the trade deadline.

Jimmy Goodman (162 wRC+) has missed time and that probably cost him an All-Star nomination as he approaches 200 PA for the season with a .335/.444/.525 line. Will Gasparino (218 wRC+) has been excellent in minimal PA, while Matthew Etzel (100 wRC+) just keeps coming back for more and this time has been league average.

Attachment 1016060

Mason Barnett (122 ERA+) has been solid again over his first 20 starts, striking out 25% of batters he faces with a 1.11 WHIP. In his contract year, he is probably pricing himself out of a Royals extension.

Cade Townsend (107 ERA+) has been even more dominant when it comes to strikeouts (31%), while leading the innings count (115.2) for the Royals.

Drew Beam (102 ERA+) is part of 25% strikeout club with a FIP under 4 at 3.89 while Aidan May (90 ERA+) was league average as a 5th starter before getting injured just before the All-Star Break. Marcos Paz (103 ERA+ in relief) will take his place to start the second half of the season.

The big question is what to do with Chase Burns. His return from injury has not gone well; while he has come back with strong strikeout number (10.1 K/9), he is walking over 10% of batters with a HR rate of 2.4/9 which is unsustainable. The Royals will be buyers when it comes to the Starting Rotation approaching the Trade Deadline.

The bullpen continues to be a strength for the Royals, although this year has been a tale of feast and famine.

The feast comes from Yusuke Matsumura (327 ERA+), David Hagaman (197 ERA+), Isaac Morton (168 ERA+), and All-Star Wen-Hui Pan (144 ERA+). Frank Mozzicato (121 ERA+) was also good before missing three weeks.

The famine comes from Raimon Gomez (89 ERA+) and MacKenzie Gore (71 ERA+) while Humberto Trujillo has just been called up but had a tough first outing! Extra arm Sheng-En Lin (96 ERA+) has been league average, giving useful innings when needed.

Trades

The Royals didn’t make any trades at the All-Star Break but did make some internal changes to try to keep momentum going as they enter the final stretch of the season.

2029 1st Round pick Billy Mumaugh (1.326 OPS AAA) had to come up as he had destroyed AAA hitting. Gasparino was somewhat unlucky to be the man to be sent down but could return if the right deal can be found for Langford.

Mumaugh’s performances since joining the Royals have been sensational and the Royals took the risk and signed him to a long-term contract (11 years, $167m, $20m max.) as they called him up to the Majors.

2028 1st Round pick Tim Storer (114 OPS+) was also summoned from AAA; while he hasn’t had quite the hot bat of Mumaugh he offers elite defence and replaced Kiyotake Takenaka.

Both players become the first from their respective Royals draft classes to be called up by the Royals.

The final move ahead of the restart was MacKenzie Gore being sent placed on waivers and Colin White (2026 7th Round) was promoted from AAA. White had been lost in the Rule 5 Draft but SF released him at the beginning of June.

Prospects Watch

Attachment 1016075

Attachment 1016076

Billy Mumaugh, who had to repeat AA ball, had a fantastic first half of the season, putting up over 6 WAR at AAA to earn his promotion, after hitting the June AAA Hitter of the Month Award. Tim Storer wasn’t quite as effective but 3.6 WAR in just over half a season sees him make the same leap.

J.J Pangia is knocking on the door and has been joined at AAA by Danny Petty who has managed to stay healthy and put up over 5 WAR at AA level. Mike Hoffer has been promoted with him after winning three Pitcher of the Month Awards in a row at AA. With William Schmidt already in AAA, it is a pitcher laden prospect team which will likely see at least one of them promoted before the season is over. On the hitting side, trade acquisition Luis Gotay put up 7.4 WAR at AA so moves to Omaha to finish up the season.

Further down, Curt Bogan took A+ batters for 3.1 WAR, and won the April High-A Pitcher of the Month Award, to gain his promotion, alongside Eddie Baquerizo, who was slightly less effective but still too strong for A+.

Juan Zubia and Enny Mijhail Van Dyke are making solid progress after multiple seasons in Rookie ball and they are joined in promotion by Ian Gordon, all three moving up from A to High-A ball.

2027 Draft

The Royals had the 32nd pick in the 2031 draft, a draft lacking in top end, developed college players that would fall to the Royals. The Royals decided it was worth having a year away from their standard approach and selected high school, 18-year-end Marquis Foggie {profile} with their first round pick. More likely to stick at 3B than SS, Foggie projects to have plus contact and plus-plus power and gap power.
  • Round 2, Pick 36 - Kansas City Royals: SP Chris Arington, age 18 out of high school – a 6-pitch starter with a potential 80-50-55 profile, his slider, curveball and change up all have the potential to be plus-plus.
  • Round 3, Pick 23 - Kansas City Royals: 3B Toby Demkowski, age 21 out of college – a 70 arm, paired with potential plus power with above average contact and eye and a good 40-contact, 40-power base to work from.
  • Round 4, Pick 27 - Kansas City Royals: SP Chris Norvell, age 21 out of college – a potential 65-50-55 profile with a plus-plus slider and curveball as part of a 4-pitch arsenal. 40s across the board are a good base for Norvell.
  • Round 5, Pick 28 - Kansas City Royals: SP Mike Dryer, age 18 out of high school – only three pitches (but all strong with a plus-plus slider, fastball, plus changeup) but a 70-50-50 potential profile if he develops.

Demkowski and Norvell will start in A ball, along with 7th round pick SS Eric Baldwin, and 12th, 13th, and 14th round Relievers Josh Bear, Luis Rosas, and Jeremy Daley. The rest of the class will begin in Rookie ball.

Zach Masteller was the prize in this draft class, the Mets securing what will likely be their starting SS for a decade! The first five picks of the draft were:
  • Round 1, Pick 1 - New York Mets: SS Zach Masteller, age 22 out of college
  • Round 1, Pick 2 - San Antonio Avalanche: SS R.J. Frank, age 18 out of high school
  • Round 1, Pick 3 - Pittsburgh Pirates: SP Josh Dering, age 17 out of high school
  • Round 1, Pick 4 - Toronto Blue Jays: CF Mike Isham, age 21 out of college
  • Round 1, Pick 5 - Los Angeles Dodgers: 3B Dan Crowell, age 21 out of college

2031 Player Evaluation

3 Attachment(s)
A first World Series appearance since 2015 is a season to celebrate for the Kansas City Royals, even if defeat at the final hurdle stings in the immediate aftermath. Only the second time the Royals have made the playoffs three years in a row, and back-to-back AL Central pennants for the first time since 1984-1985 are all causes for optimism and there is a feeling of positivity amongst Royals fans!

Attachment 1016968

The team’s success was built on a much-improved batting line up to complement a typically strong pitching performance. A Top-5 offence in terms of hits, strikeouts, and batting average is not a new experience in recent times but adding in a Top-6 slugging percentage and extra-base hits made all th difference.

On the pitching side, the bullpen was typically strong (top 3 AL) although the starting rotation faded in the second half of the season (4.49 ERA – 9th). Leading the league in strikeouts is now an annual rite and keeping opponents hits (1st) and average (1st) to a minimum showed the dominance of the performance. The defence stood up too, finishing 2nd in both defensive efficiency and zone rating.

Attachment 1016967

Catchers

The class of 2027 Catching tandem of Jonathan Gerew and Dave Holcombe combined to offer strong defence with Gerew offering a league average bat (7th best Catcher with FRM >0). Holcombe struggled with the bat, and will need to show more in 2032.

Infield

Isaac Paredes (128 wRC+) moved to everyday 1B in 2031, despite his lack of height being a risk (definitely an OOTP 1B only). A 2.1 ZR with the 6th best wRC+ amongst first basemen make this a very successful move. His 35 HRs (8th) and 119 RBIs (5th) were both Top Ten Royal seasons. A Free Agent, the 32-year-old is looking for $19m for four years, so will likely be signing a lucrative off season contract elsewhere. Luke Adams (59 wRC+) was the loser in the infield merry-go-round and he struggled in the 200 PA he made during the season. A tough decision might be needed with him eligible for the second year of arbitration.

Nick Loftin missed virtually the whole season with his knee giving Gregory Barrios (73 wRC+) the chance at a full season at 2B. He failed to take advantage with a below average bat to go with a pedestrian 1.2 ZR. Entering his second year of arbitration, he is definitely on the block this offseason. Kiyotake Takenaka (59 wRC+) spent some time in the big leagues before the All-Star Break but didn’t produce enough to retain his place.

Jeremy Rogerson (118 wRC+) made the third base his own in 2031, a 3.5 ZR making him a Top-5 3B across the league.

Bobby Witt Jr. (121 wRC+) was a Top-5 SS but, for the third time in five seasons, missed significant time – this time post-concussion syndrome ruling him out of the final 6 weeks of the regular season and the post-season. His 4.4 WAR was enough to take him to 2nd on the All-Time Royals list, his highest spot in a host of Top-10 categories he now features in for the Royals.

Hunter Owen (116 wRC+) had another 30+ HR season; with 130 in 3½ seasons the Royals are likely to try to accommodate him for the 3032 season despite his lack of defensive flexibility as he approaches the Top 10 all-time list for the Royals.

Tim Storer (111 wRC+) and Jake Adolphus (135 wRC+) both spent time near the end of the season with Storer doing a great job in what proved to be an audition for the potentially vacant Shortstop position. Adolphus has the defensive skills to make it in the big leagues but doubts remain over his bat with only his gap power seen as average or above by the Royal’ scouting team.

Outfield

Wyatt Langord (82 wRC+) struggled throughout the regular season and would have been traded for the right deal at the trade deadline. However, he came up clutch (154 wRC+) in the postseason securing a second post-season series MVP award. The emergence of young hitting outfielders for the Royals mean he will be back on the block over the offseason ahead of his final year of contract.

Will Gasparino (217 wRC+) and Matthew Etzel (100 wRC+) both took some At-Bats in LF; with Gasparino the more likely to be seen come opening day in 2032 but Etzel proving his bat can play at the MLB level.

Dominic Fletcher (66 wRC+) was signed as a Minor League Free Agent and was only called up when Cristhian Vaquero was injured on opening day. However, despite not hitting at all he still managed almost 1 WAR, proving the importance of an elite CF, recording the 5th highest ZR in all of baseball. Looking for 4 years at $4m, the fragile 34-year-old is optimistic at best but the Royals will circle round during the off season.

Billy Mumaugh (137 wRC+) and Jimmy Goodman (152 wRC+) are the future for the Royals outfield. Both players are signed through the 2040 season and Royals fans are rightly excited for the decade ahead. One left hander and one right hander is a nice complement, and with both showing strong slugging ability (.516 and .530 respectively) the two draftees could provide the power the line up has been missing over the first few years of Stewart’s tenure.

Sheng-En Lin (55 wRC+) struggled massively with the bat and the Royals may prefer to have him as a full time reliever in 2032, taking the field in emergencies or as a defensive corner outfielder.

40 Man Roster

Braylin Tavera (97 ERA+ AAA) was the only 40-man batter not to take an AB in the big leagues in 2031. The Royals front office have lost trust in Tavera after his failed attempts and would love to get something back for a player with a plus eye and some development according to their scouts.

Starters

Mason Barnett (122 ERA+) had another great season for the Royals, his 4.3 WAR (17th best in 2031) taking him to 6th on the All-Time Royals list while recording another top ten season for Opponents Average (9th - .217), giving him four of the top ten. Extending him was an owner goal but another 6 years at $20 for a 30-year-old is not a risk the Royals are willing to take. They will make a QO and will either welcome one more season or take the draft pick.

Cade Townsend (106 ERA+) was the breakout pitcher for the Royals, adding 4.3 WAR while striking out 227 (4th highest Royals single season) batters at the rate of 11.1 per nine innings (1= Royals all time).

Drew Beam (86 ERA+) regressed in 2031 but still offered over 2 WAR across his 33 starts and adding his name to the Royal Top Ten list for strikeouts/nine (10th – 9.2). Entering his 2nd year of arbitration, the Royals will have a decision to make. Initial thinking is that the Royals will not have both Beam and Barnett pitching for them next year but will probably have one.

Aiden May (95 ERA+) is a perfect fifth starter, or would be if he could offer a few more Quality Starts (.323). 2.2 WAR is in line with his first two years as a Royal and a repeat in 2032 would be ideal, especially if he could get closer to 160 innings than the 152.1 IP in 2031.

Marcos Paz (192 ERA+) as a starter moved to the Starting Rotation at the All Star Break, pitching 12 games with a 1.02 WHIP. A full season repeat in 2032 would be ideal for the Royals.

Bullpen

The Royals bullpen was one or two arms lighter than in previous years. Wen-Hui Pan (119 ERA+) pitched in 70 games, fewer than 2030 but still 4th all time on the Royals list and offered almost 2 WAR. Entering arbitration, the Royals have a decision to make on a $6m+ expected salary.

The other pitchers due for arbitration are Raimon Gomez (106 ERA+), Yusuke Matsumura (185 ERA+) and Frank Mozzicato (133 ERA+). The Royals may believe they can get similar returns to Gomez at a lower cost, while Mozzicato is a popular figure with a low arbitration figure which would seem to provide value for a left-handed pitcher. Matsumura’s arbitration estimate is $8.5m and it seems unlikely that the Royals can retain that salary and Pan’s.

Josiah Gray (236 ERA+) can back to the Royals in a relief role and did a great job in 14 innings of work.

David Hagaman (320 ERA+) was the pick of the bullpen, Sheng-En Lin (154 ERA+) proved he can hold his own as a relief arm, while Isaac Morton (116 ERA+) and William Schmidt (139 ERA+) benefitted somewhat from the Royals’ defensive excellence as their FIP (4.39 and 4.13) was substantially higher than their ERA.

Colin White (101 ERA+) was league average but as a left hander offers the variance that adds value to a bullpen.

2031 Front Office Review

Owner Goals

New year, new goals from owner Sherman.

Attachment 1016969

Heading back to the post-season is in everyone’s plans for 2032, even if it would be the first time in Royals history to reach the playoffs four years in a row.

Stolen bases is a Royals staple and, despite some ability around the ballclub, has not been a success story for the Royals – a noble cause to improve in 2032.

Extending Barnett is unlikely but he will be offered a QO and the Royals will take it from there. Likewise, the end of next year is the deadline for getting more international finds to the Big Leagues which will likely come at least one year early.

The improvement in fan interest to 79 was not deemed sufficient so restarts with a 4-year deadline, expected the same year Sherman wants to be winning a World Series pennant.

Finances

To achieve those goals, and after reaching the World Series, Stewart was excited for the Royals new budget. Looking back, the initial projection at the end of the 2029 season was $210m, which was lowered at the end of the 2030 season to $198m. This was based on expected revenues of $213m and $220m respectively. On the back of a World Series increasing expected revenue for 2032 to $229m, there was widespread disappointment from Royals fans and staff alike when Sherman advised Stewart the total budget would be $162,000,000, with an estimated $60m available for player payroll.

The 26th budget in baseball from the 18th highest revenues and the 24th lowest expenditure will lead to some difficult offseason decisions for the Royals organisation.

Attachment 1016971

Total attendance decreased by 8k, but with the increased ticket price, there was an $85k per game increase in revenue. In an attempt to ensure there is no more drop off, ticket prices will be frozen at 3021 prices.

Personnel

Reaching the World Series was enough to earn a new contract for GM Stewart. At $1.8m the extra $600k was fine reward although a duration of one year did concern some Royals fans who are enjoying the team’s current success.

The Royals said goodbye to two coaches in the off season, with neither High-A Hitting Coach Walter Heckel nor DSL Manager Tommy Helms having their contracts renewed.

However, there were a raft of extensions offered with the Royals happy with their farm system and keen to retain consistency. This did see their staff expenses increase from $6.18m to $7.03m.

A-ball Hitting Coach Ramon Castro was happy in Columbia, so the Royals will go external for both appointments.

Helms departs with a 192-109 overall record, but the Royals felt they could find someone who can offer a bit more development alongside performance.

Minor Leagues
Awards

AA Manager Dan Jones won his 4th Manager of the Year Award in a row, while DSL Manager Peter O’Brien secured his first.

The Royals were delighted to see four drafted players win MiL Awards, taking both the Outstanding Pitched and Most Valuable Awards at AA and AAA level.

Peter O'Brien DSL Manager of the Year
Dan Jones AA Manager of the Year (4 in a row)

Mike Hoffer 2027 3rd Round AA Outstanding Pitcher Award
J.J. Paniagua 2029 2nd Round AAA Outstanding Pitcher Award

Danny Petter 2028 1st Round S AA Most Valuable Player
Billy Mumaugh 2029 1st Round AAA Most Valuable Player

Notable Retirements

There were several draft class retirements amongst the many Minor League Free Agent retirements this year, particularly from the 2025 class.

2022 Class

Neither RF Milo Rushford (18th Round) nor Ivan Sosa (International Amateur) made it beyond A ball before retiring. Both gave good service to the Columbia Fireflies, with Rushford winning a Platinum Stick in CF in 2029, also finishing 3rd in MVP voting that year.

2023 Class

RP Hiro Wyatt (3rd Round) was the only retiree having reached AA ball.

2025 Class

No less than six of the 2025 class departed the Royals organisation at the end of their respective seasons, headlined by AAA RP Brady Jones, who was frustrated in two seasons in Omaha never to get called up to the Major League roster.
  • 6th Round A+ 1B Andrew Fischer 2029 Gold Glove 1B
  • 7th Round AAA RP Brady Jones 2028 A+ All Star; 2nd Reliever of the Year
  • 9th Round AA SP Grayson Grinsell 2027 A Outstanding Pitcher Award
  • 10th Round AA RF Mason Neville 2027 A+ All Star; Platinum Stick CF. 2028 AA All Star; Gold Glove RF. 2031 AA All Star
  • 12th Round A+ RP Chris Arroyo
  • 15th Round A+ 1B Alvin Keels

2026 Class

12th Round pick RP Ben Smith was the only retirement, having reach AA ball.

2027 Class

14th Round pick, RP Juan Caraballo retired having reached AAA ball but struggling (76 ERA+) in 2031.

Trades

Infielder Boston Baro, the 2023 8th Round Pick, retired having seen several in-house Royals promoted from AAA ahead of him in 2031. Baro played 48 games for the Royals in 2030, starting 26, but put up a disappointing 63 OPS+ from a .192/.288/.308 line.

KC Top 500 Prospects Performance

Attachment 1016970

It was another good year down on the farm as Holcombe, Rogerson, Paz, Mumaugh, Storer, and Schmidt all graduated to the MLB.

Looking across the list, all the top 15 had good seasons and, with the exception of Jorge Tejeda (International Complex) will all move up in 2032. Alex Duke and Joe Patterson both struggled at Rookie and A ball respectively and will hope for better years in 2032 to get back on track.

Danny Petty unfortunately suffered another season ending injury and doubts are now real as to whether his body will let him play two ways; he will miss most of the 2032 season and his return to AAA will be carefully managed.

Development Lab

The priority of the Development Lab this offseason was to try to lower the fragility of a large number of the higher rated prospects in the Royals system.

Having one development lab for the whole organisation is beginning to feel a little challenging and so from next season, offseason spots will be increased to 12 – with 4 open to 40-man players, 4 open to players in A-ball, and 4 open to Rookie ball.

Pre-Arbitration Extensions & Trades

The first day of the offseason brought some huge news for Royals fans.

Attachment 1019513

[However, in the OOTP world this simply meant that he opted out of the original contract and so now has a four year contract paying $33m in 2032 and 2033, and then $28m in 2034 and 2035. The Royals would have taken a run at re-signing Witt Jr. and, with the budget slashed by owner Sherman, the we will take this as a successful resigning, albeit on a hugely team friendly deal.]

Sunday, November 2nd , 2031
  • SS Bobby Witt Jr. has exercised his contract opt-out.
  • Traded 27-year old 1B Luke Adams to the Seattle Mariners, getting 18-year old minor league CF Joe Wallace and $2,000,000 in cash in return.
  • Traded 27-year old 2B Gregory Barrios and 19-year old minor league RHP Luis Gramajo to the Los Angeles Dodgers, getting 21-year old minor league 2B Chris Maguire, 19-year old minor league RHP Juan Bautista, and $500,000 in cash in return.

Luke Adams enjoyed a couple of successful seasons in Kansas City, although his glove was always more consistent than his bat. A glut of infield prospects at the top of the farm mean that the Royals are happy to thanks Adams for his service and move on. The Mariners offered the best return, $2m in cash to go along with prospect Wallace, a 19-yo OF with a potential 80-grade eye and plus contact and gap power.

Gregory Barrios was in the same situation as Adams – an arbitration eligible player whose glove outshone his bat and had been overtaken by other players in the Royals system. The initial returns for Barrios were not as attractive as for Adams but the addition of organisational piece, pitcher Luis Gramajo allowed the Royals to strike a deal with the Dodgers, $500k plus two interesting prospects, 2028 6th Round pick Chris Maguire (a plus defender at 2B with potential plus contact and power) and 2030 7th Round pick Juan Bautista (a starting pitcher with a potential 50-55-55 profile and a plus change-up as part of a three pitch arsenal).

Thursday, November 6th , 2031
  • Signed 1B Hunter Owen to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $2,900,000.
  • Signed RP Frank Mozzicato to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $1,600,000.
  • Signed SP Aiden May to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $1,650,000.

Saturday, November 15th , 2031
  • Signed RP Wen-Hui Pan to a 1-year contract extension worth a total of $5,800,000.

Thursday, November 20th , 2031
Drew Beam was coming into the second year of arbitration and with several high upside pitchers at the top of the system, the Royals decided to move on from his $5m estimated arbitration 2032 contract. Stewart went back to the Dodgers for another high-prospect infielder, 2028 1st Round pick Steve Carter (a plus 2B defender with plus contact and gap power to go with above average power and eye) in exchange for Beam, 2031 trade acquisition Dan Colligan and MiL Free Agent organisational piece Steve Zampa into the deal.

Tuesday, November 25th , 2031
  • Traded 33-year old minor league 2B Nick Loftin, 18-year old minor league LHP Frank Avalos, and $2,500,000 in cash to the Miami Marlins, getting 24-year old LHP Jake Early in return.

Nick Loftin spent all of 2031 on the IR list for the Royals. The emergence of Tim Storer, and the acquisition of Steve Carter, meantthere was no longer a place on the Royals roster for Loftin and his $5.5m contract. To get off that contract, the Royals sent the Marlins $2.5m in cash and organisational piece Frank Avalos. In return they got starting pitcher Jake Early, a potential 55-50-55 profile, 6-pitch prospect with 3 plus pitches.

Qualifying Offers

Sunday, November 23rd , 2031
  • SP Mason Barnett rejected the qualifying offer
  • 1B Isaac Paredes rejected the qualifying offer

International Free Agents

There was only one International Free Agent of note, Catcher Juan Ramon. His profile was attractive enough for the Royals to take a run, offering a 4-year $89m ($22.4m AAV) contract to Ramon. The Cardinals blew that out of the water, ultimately giving him the 4-years but at $28m per year for a total value of $112m which was just too rich for the Royals.

Rule 5 Draft

For the first time, the Royals had several players that needed protecting on the 40-man roster. They added nine players ahead of the Rule 5 Draft:
  • 1B Sergio Perales on the secondary (40-man) roster.
  • 2B Jesus Vela on the secondary (40-man) roster.
  • 3B Juan Zubia on the secondary (40-man) roster.
  • 3B Danny Petty on the secondary (40-man) roster.
  • CF Edgar Manzo on the secondary (40-man) roster.
  • P Josh Olaniyan on the secondary (40-man) roster.
  • P Lazaro Espinal on the secondary (40-man) roster.
  • P Nicanor Berns on the secondary (40-man) roster.
  • P Jake Early on the secondary (40-man) roster.

In addition, several teams had approached the Royals with deals for Nasim Nunez. To avoid losing him for free in the Rule 5 Trade, the Royals built a trade with the Atlanta Braves:

In addition to Nunez, the Royals gave up organisation piece (2023 International Amateur signee) Enmanuel Santos. In return, they received $750k and four prospects:

Nicanor Berns – 2024 International Amateur with a 65-50-45 profile with 4 plus pitches. He is lined up for a spot in the bullpen in 2032.
Joe Brown – 2029 16th Round pick reliever with a potential plus-plus fastball and a 60-50-55 profile.
Josh Contreras – 2030 2nd Round pick 20-yo starting pitcher with a plus-plus sinker and three plus pitches, with a potential 65-50-55 profile.
Juan Fonseca – 2029 International Amateur with potential elite 2B defence, 80 power with a plus eye. He will strike out a lot but if he can reach his power potential he could dominate HR charts for years.

The draft itself was uneventful with only one transaction involving the Royals:
  • Drafted SP Jim Porter (5 pitches with 45-50-45 profile with some potential stuff growth) in the 2031 Rule 5 Draft (Round 1, Pick 25, 25th overall Pick) from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

International Amateurs

The Royals signed a four player International Amateur class in 2032, headlined by Venezuelan CF Esteban Medina ($2,500,000). Medina has a potential profile with plus contact and plus-plus power and the ability to play either corner of the outfield.

The rest of the class was made up of:
  • Venezuelan RP Nelson Herrera ($1,400,000): two plus-plus pitches as part of a 80-60-55 profile
  • Dominican RP Alfredo Cadena ($1,000,000): two plus-plus pitches as part of a 75-60-60 profile
  • Mexican CF Edgar Roca ($700,000): above average contact and power, and plus gap power for a corner outfielder with plus speed

All four will spend 2032 in the International Complex.

Offseason Trades & Free Agents

Saturday, November 29th, 2031
Jake Adolphus took the dreaded trip to see a guru. He will reorder priorities, likely to be a negative impact on a player who would have been fighting for a roster place in 2032.

Friday, December 26th , 2031
  • Signed free agent RP T.J. Brock to a 2-year contract worth a total of $3,400,000.
  • Traded 31-year old minor league 2B Kiyotake Takenaka to the Los Angeles Dodgers, getting 25-year old 2B Dan Colligan and $1,000,000 in cash in return.

Brock, a 65-55-50 reliever with a plus-plus curveball, to go with plus fastball and change up signs with a Team Option for the 2nd year.

The Dodgers completed a hat trick of trades involving second baseman, with the Royals taking back Dan Colligan plus $1m for Takenaka, who had failed in the big leagues in 2031.

Saturday, December 27th , 2031
  • Signed free agent SP Mason Barnett to a 3-year contract worth a total of $33,000,000.

Owner goal complete as Mason Barnett returns to the Royals through free agency. Having turned down a one-year Qualifying Offer, the Royals were happy to sign Barnett to a three-year $11m per year contract, with the 2nd and 3rd years as Team Options.

Sunday, December 28th , 2031
  • Signed free agent CF Dominic Fletcher to a 1-year contract worth a total of $2,000,000.

Dominic Fletcher also returns on a $2m contract. The Royals will hope for some development success on their prospect outfielders, but Fletcher provides a fallback option having provided elite defence in 2031.

Departures

Isaac Paredes used his HR-laden 2031 to sign a 4-year contract with the Angels. Fully guaranteed, the contract is worth $66.3m, far more than the Royals were willing to spend.

The fans reacted poorly, dropping fan interest back down to 78. However, the Royals will take a Supplemental 1st Round pick in the 2032 draft.

Financial Situation

Owner Sherman made no changes to the budget in January. However, there was one additional personnel change with Rookie Pitching Coach Joe Testa leaving the organisation. Andy Altemus joins on a one-year contract as the best of some average options.

Preseason & Spring Training

The Royals have their best spring of the Stewart era, going 18-9 to lead the AL Central.

They did suffer several injuries though, some more impactful than others:

Friday, February 20th , 2032
  • RP Frank Mozzicato was injured while pitching. The diagnosis is not yet known.
Sunday, February 22nd , 2032
  • RP Frank Mozzicato diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff, it's a career-ending injury.
Thursday, February 26th , 2032
  • CF Dominic Fletcher was injured on a defensive play. The Diagnosis: sprained wrist. He's expected to miss about 5 weeks.
Tuesday, March 16th , 2032
  • C Dave Holcombe was injured while running the bases. The Diagnosis: sprained knee. This is a day-to-day injury expected to last one week.

Bullpen stalwart, and 2021 1st round draft pick Frank Mozzicato suffered a career-ending torn rotator cuff. An ERA of 3.53 (128 ERA+) over two seasons and 119.2 innings should have been the start of a great reliever career for Mozzicato. Fans and front office alike were heartbroken for the very popular home-grown player.

Losing Fletcher for the first week of the season will be an early test for the young outfielders in Kansas City, which may hasten Fletcher’s departure from KC.

Finally, Dave Holcombe’s day-to-day injury was serious in the context of not improving his Strength & Conditioning over the offseason and remaining fragile. As back-up catcher this could prove problematic, and alternative will be sought by the Royals.

2032 Roster Preview

1 Attachment(s)
OSA predicts a great season incoming for the Royals, with an AL-high 96-66 record with a +171 run differential a 7 game improvement on their 2031 prediction. The best record in the AL would of course mean a Royals record-tying third AL Central title in the a row and a record setting 4th consecutive playoff appearance.

Despite starting the season injured, Hunter Owen is predicted to hit 46 HRs, while both Jimmy Goodman (.292/.398/.498) and Billy Mumaugh (.298/.383/.518) make the individual performance list. No pitchers make the list but it will be dominance by committee with the 2nd lowest ERA (3.96) in the AL predicted.

Attachment 1020248

Hitters

Catcher

Despite concerns over his injury proness, Dave Holcombe will start the season backing up Jonathan Gerew at catcher.

Starter Jonathan Gerew (2027 8th Round)
Back Up Dave Holcombe (2027 9th Round)

Infield

Jeremy Rogerson and Bobby Witt Jr. are locks at third base and shortstop respectively and both had good springs ahead of what are expected to be big years.

Jesus Vela and Jake Adolphus struggled over the Spring but will be better for the experience as they head to AAA to open the season while Danny Petty still has a long 6 months of recovery ahead of him.

The excess of quality outfielders in the Royals system means that Jimmy Goodman will start the season at 1B with Hunter Owen back at DH once he recovers from a 5 week injury sustained on opening day.

Steve Carter struggled over the Spring, allowing Tim Storer to retain the starting 2B role heading into the season. Carter will cover across the infield, alongside 1B Sergio Perales, who had a great Spring and will look to continue his progression through the Royals system having hit over .900 last year in Omaha.

1B Jimmy Goodman (2027 1st Round)
2B Tim Storer (2028 1st Round)
3B Jeremy Rogerson (2027 2nd Round)
SS Bobby Witt Jr. (2019 1st Round)
INF Steve Carter (2031 Trade LAD)
INF Sergio Perales (2028 Trade SD)
DH/IR Hunter Owen (2023 4th Round)

It may have come a couple of years late, but Sherman’s owner goal of more homegrown stars has been realised with the starting infield all being drafted by the Royals.

Outfield

Wyatt Langford struggled through Spring but will start in LF entering the final year of his contract.

Dominic Fletcher’s injury allows Luis Gotay to earn the opening day starting spot in CF, with Sheng-En Lin backing up the position.

In RF it will be Billy Mumaugh to start the season, with Will Gasparino backing up the corners.

Matthew Etzel is out of options and will be DFA’ed while 2026 International Amateur signing Edgar Manzo will start the season in Omaha.

LF Wyatt Langford (2028 Trade TEX)
CF Luis Gotay (2030 Trade ARI)
RF Billy Mumaugh (2029 1st Round)
OF Will Gasparino (2026 3rd Round)

OF Sheng-Em Lin (2029 Waivers LAA)

IR Dominic Fletcher 1 week (2031 MiL FA)

Arms

The Royals 2032 starting rotation was locked in at the start of spring training, although it had a new look from previous years. Chase Burns and Drew Beam have both been traded while Cade Townsend has propelled himself to the top of the rotation. Mason Barnett resigned for his 8th season in the Royals starting rotation, while Aiden May is back for his 4th. Marcos Paz starts his 2nd season as a starter and is joined at the back end of the rotation by 2029 2nd round pick J.J. Paniagua. Mike Hoffer started two games to gain some experience and is first up should a replacement be needed.

Fourteen relievers were used by the Royals during Spring Training. With Sheng-En Lin guaranteed a spot due to his ability to cover CF, there were seven spots for thirteen pitchers.

In addition to Mike Hoffer, there were two starting pitchers the Royals had pitch innings over Spring to gain experience but will return to AAA – Lazaro Espinal and Josh Olaniyan.

The Royals have a tradition of sticking by their arms and 2032 would be no different. Wen-Hui Pan, reigning AL Reliever of the Year will start in a stopper role and is joined in that role by William Schmidt. David Hagaman also returns for the 2032 season

Sadly, after a tough 2032 season and a drop in his control, Isaac Morton (8.1 BB/9 over Spring) loses his place and heads to Omaha while Humberto Trujillo and Colin White had struggled in their debut season and still have a lot of growth which they will try to realise in Omaha.

That left one more pitcher to miss out and in a nod to spring performance, it was Jonathan Fleri and his struggle to keep the ball in the park (3.2 HR/9) who was sent back to Omaha.

Four first-year Kansas Royals, therefore, start in the bullpen: Jake Early, Jim Porter, Nicanor Berns, and T.J. Brock, with Jake Early the sole left-handed pitcher.

2032 Prospect Preview

3 Attachment(s)
It should be another exciting year for the Royals farm system. J.J. Paniagua, Luis Gotay, and Sergio Perales open the season in the Big Leagues, providing another injection of youth into the team.

On the hitting side, Danny Petty will come back at the end of the system to join Dan Colligan at AAA, while Juan Zubia will be looking to impress at AA and join them during the season. Zubia was the first signing of the Stewart era and there is considerable excitement for a player who has consistently sat in the Top 20 prospects in baseball. 2028 and 2030 3rd round picks Enny Mijhail Van Dyke and Ian Gordon, along with trade acquisition Chris Maguire both join Zubia at AA.

The pitching side sees Eddie Baquerizo, Mike Hoffer, Curt Bogans and Josh Olaniyan all opening in AAA with the hope of breaking into the rotation during the season. It is a top heavy pitching farm and the Royals may be expected to target pitching in the upcoming draft.

The Royals go 16-10 to lead the AL Central after the first month of the season, one game up on the Chicago White Sox and with the best (equal with the Rays) record in the American League. The Brewers (17-8) lead all of baseball, followed by the NL East leaders the Phillies (17-9).

Kansas City Results

The Royals were 7-3 against Division rivals, winning home series against the Twins (2-1) and the Tigers (3-1) and taking two-three from the Tigers on the road.

In AL play, the Royals were swept by the Yankees in New York, before taking two-three against them at home while sweeping AL West leaders the Astros and taking three out of four from the Blue Jays at home.

They lost their only inter-league match-up, losing 2-3 on the road in Miami against the Marlins.

The Royals hitters have been generally strong over the first month with the biggest outlier being Bobby Witt Jr. with an wRC+ of 12. A .217 BABIP suggests (.312 career average) strongly hints at bad luck, with a SO% below 20% adding to that evidence while his 3% walk rate is far below his 9% career average.

Glove-wise, Dominic Fletcher came back from injury and has a -1.8 ZR in 51 innings, although his bat (171 wRC+) made up the deficit this month. Victor Mesa Jr. chose not to opt out of his MiL contract and his is available should Fletcher’s glove not improve.

In the starting rotation, it was the returning veteran Mason Barnett (61 ERA+) who struggled in his first 5 starts while newcomer J.J. Paniagua (176 ERA+) looked right at home, holding opponents to .211 with a WHIP of 1.06.

The bullpen was a mixed bag (with a very small sample size). Nicanor Berns’ walk rate (7.7 BB/9) will need to be monitored, as will William Schmidt’s FIP (5.48), which was covered by his defense (142 ERA+) over the first month of the season.

MLB Standings

The Royals drop into a tie for the lead in the AL Central (with the White Sox) and 4 games back from the AL (and baseball) leading 33-19 Yankees. They Phillies are leading over in the west, a 33-21 record making them the only other team in baseball with a .600+ winning record.

Attachment 1020867

Kansas City Results

The Royals suffer a losing month, going 13-14 with some feeble offensive performances.

Attachment 1020868

Divisionally, it was a Guardians month as Kansas City opened up the month dropping two-three at Cleveland before matching that with a 2-1 home series victory at the end of the month.

Four series on the road vs AL teams made for a tough month, with the Royals beating the Blue Jays (29-25) and the Avalanche (25-29) 2-1 but dropping three-four to the Mariners (27-26) and ending the month getting swept in a three-game series by the Rays (29-25). Getting swept 0-3 at home by the .500 Rangers was disappointing but the AL West bottom dwelling Angels (22-33) were swept to ensure an even home record.

In the only interleague Series, the Royals hosted the 26-27 Cubs and took the series 2-1.

Kansas City Team Statistics

Attachment 1020869
Attachment 1020870

Two months into the season and the usual story of a stronger pitching corps versus batting core is true in Kansas City. However, two areas of concern/frustration are defense and stolen bases – one which has dropped from its usual AL-leading position, while the other has regressed despite a strategic tweak to make what is a reasonably quick, base stealing team more aggressive.

It was Will Gasparino (-52 wRC+) with the cold bat in May, albeit it from a very limited sample size, while Bobby Witt Jr. (99 wRC+) has started to come around with a league average month, although with a poor defensive month. Tim Storer (132 wRC+) continued his great start to the season with 7 HRs in the month pacing a .558 slugging %.

Steve Carter (-2.2 ZR) will have to have his defensive assignments carefully managed while Sheng-En Lin (-1.1 ZR) has struggled covering SS on occasion and learning on the fly.

Roles reversed in the starting rotation in May as Mason Barnett (100 ERA+) was back to league average (albeit with a walk rate of 10% that warrants review) while J.J. Paniagua (68 ERA+) struggled through his 6 starts, giving up 8 HRs, and four games with 4+ runs.

In the bullpen, Nicanor Berns (63 ERA+) has not been able to lower his walk rate and will be given a rest in Omaha, but William Schmidt (147 ERA+) had a better FIP (3.35) as part of a bullpen that is generally firing well.

Jonathan Fleri (0.98 ERA AAA) has excelled at AAA and, having not given up a single HR across 18 innings (something he struggled with in the Spring), earns the recall in place of Berns.

Sunday, May 30th , 2032
Traded 34-year old CF Dominic Fletcher to the Toronto Blue Jays, getting $500,000 in cash in return.

Losing Paz for over a month was a disappointment for the fragile pitcher, with the Royals choosing to promote vastly experienced Luis Garcia (2031 MiL FA) to fill in, and he had a 5.2-inning, 5 Hit no decision first outing.

The Royals decided to take no chances with 3B Jeremy Rogerson when he strained his forearm, sending him to the IR and taking the chance to recall Hunter Owen from his rehab assignment.

Backup Catcher Holcombe’s fragility was exposed as he sustained an injury running the bases. Experienced Miguel Palma (2031 MiL FA) came up and appeared in 3 games.

After going 9-19 in April, Dominic Fletcher went 3-35 in June which was more aligned to his 2031 bat. His glove was still trending in the wrong direction (a -2.3 ZR over two months) and the Royals decided to get out of his $2m contract. The Blue Jays were willing to take all of his contract and an additional $500k in cash, which the Royals happily accepted.

The Red Sox had a stellar month, going 18-8, to lead the AL with 49 wins, 5 games ahead of the Yankees for the division lead and 6 games ahead of the Royals as best of the American League. The Phillies have the best record in baseball though, at 49-30; with the Pirates one game back joining the Red Sox and Phillies as the only three teams with a winning record above .600.

Kansas City Results

Kansas City has another average month, a 14-14 record leaves the Royals clinging on to the division lead thanks to their fast start to the season.

While the AL Central is tight, the divisional results have gone the way of the Royals; a 2-1 series victory on the road over the White Sox, coupled with a split 4-game series in Minnesota leaving Kansas City at 14-8 for the season.

The Royals claimed three of four series against AL teams, home victories against the Avalanche and the Red Sox and an on the road 2-1 victory over the Rangers. The good work was somewhat undone getting swept in Los Angeles, the 36-46 Angels winning all three.

Kansas City lost both inter-league series, at home to the Padres and on the road to the Rockies, before splitting two games against the Braves to finish the month, series they will finish in July.

The Royals remain middle of the pack for hitting, with a less than stellar pitching performance and defence. For the first time, it is power (gap specific as the Royals are 4th in extra-base hits) rather than average (8th) that is keeping the Royals above water; similarly, the starting rotation (4th - 3.99 ERA) is out-pitching the bullpen (6th - 3.78).

Billy Mumaugh (157 wRC+) had a strong month, although his 4 HR ranking 3rd on the team is more a reflection of the team than his performance, which was based on his .400 OBP. On the basis that the Royals go as Bobby Witt Jr. (114 wRC+) goes, there was general happened from fans and front office as he had a good month with the bat and a positive (0.4) month of Zone Rating. He also won AL Player of the Week for the week of 7-13 June.

Luis Garcia (98 wRC+) has done a solid job stepping in for Marcos Paz (on rehab assignment in Omaha) and has likely ensured he will be retained to cover for J.J Paniagua as well. Cade Townsend (217 ERA+) went 3-1 over his 6 starts, striking 30% of the batters he faced although Mason Barnett’s (60 ERA+) challenging season continued with a second poor month, although a .341 BABIP suggests some unluckiness (or weak defence support).

Jonathan Fleri (149 ERA+) had a solid month on his call up, although the rest of the bullpen struggled. Wen-Hui Pan (27 ERA+), in particular, had a rough month with a 2.19 WHIP and a FIP over 6.00. Both he and Jim Porter struggled with long balls, as each gave up 5 HRs in 17 innings of work. The upcoming trade deadline puts some pressure on both to improve in July.

The midpoint of the season came in June with owner John Sherman reviewing Stewart’s performance against his set goals:
  • Team Record: Ok
  • Improve team stats: Poor
  • Extend your player: Achieved
  • Improve your fan interest: Failing
  • Improve your intl. amateur finds: Failing

The final news came on June 27th as Wyatt Langford came to Stewart asking about an extension. He is looking for 4 years with a total of $66m. That is a going to be too rich for the Royals, especially with Goodman and Mumaugh locked down long-term; an upgrade at 1st Base may in a Trade would be considered as the deadline approaches.

As with Marcos Paz the Royals took no risk with J.J. Paniagua when he strained his bicep, shutting him down for two weeks. Colin White was called up to the Starting Rotation to cover the few weeks before Marcos Paz returns.

Royals Reach All Star Break at 54-44, lead AL Central

Kansas City Team Statistics

Attachment 1022217

Leading the AL Central puts the Royals in a strong position at the All Star Break but they have some clear areas for improvement. OF Will Gasparino (26 wRC+) has struck out almost 40% of the time and could do with a reset in Omaha although a 40 rating for Avoid K’s puts his long-term viability in question. Likewise, DH Hunter Owen’s (88 wRC+) scouted rating has dropped to a 40 and his strikeout rate is 5% higher than any other season. A power-bat 1B will be something the Royals explore in the run up to the trade deadline.

At the other end of the scale, Tim Storer (117 wRC+) has provided elite defence at 2B while hitting 14 HRs and getting on base at a .346 rate. Surprisingly, this wasn’t enough for an All-Star nomination, but the Royals did have two bats selected, outfielders Wyatt Langford (127 wRC+) and Billy Mumaugh (126 wRC+). Langford is having the a contract year, on pace for 4.4 WAR and potentially pricing himself out an extension with the Royals while Mumaugh is justifying his contract extension in his 2nd season in the league.

Aiden May (202 ERA+) has been the standout of the starting rotation, earning himself his first All-Star selection behind a 2.89 FIP. Mason Barnett (75 ERA+) has struggled with hits with what is a weaker Royals defence, a profile similar to 2030 giving up an ERA 2 runs (from 2 hits) higher than that year. Injured in his final start before the break, it is tough to see the Royals sticking with him this season, let alone picking up his Team Option for 2033.

The bullpen has settled down, anchored by 1st time All Star William Schmidt (135 ERA+) with only fellow stopper, and reigning AL Reliever of the Year, Wen-Hui Pan (83 ERA+) struggling. Pan’s workload over the last two seasons (268 innings over a MLB-season 162 games) may be catching up with him and T.J. Brock will step up to the Closer role for the next month, at least. As always, elite relief arms will be looked at ahead of the deadline.

The American League defeated the National League in the All Star Game, Billy Mamaugh going 0-2, but William Schmidt getting the win, pitching a one-hit innings in the 3rd. May and Langford did not appear in the game.

International Amateur signings Juan Zubia and Edgar Mir highlighted a strong batting performance from Royals prospects, with Zubia earning a move to AAA for the rest of the season. He is joined in promotion to AAA by Chris Maguire, Ian Gordon and Enny Van Dyke, creating something of a logjam at that level.

Further down 2031 3rd round pick Toby Demkowski moved up from A to High-A after batting over 1.000 with the Fireflies.

The pitching side is highlighted by the full AAA starting rotation pushing for promotion to the Big Leagues. Mike Hoffer won June AAA Pitcher of the Month to lead the charge and will be waiting patiently to hear the news on Mason Barnett’s injury.

Further down, 2030 3rd round Jb Jointer won the ACL Pitcher of the Month and may soon be ready for the move to A ball.

2032 Draft

The Royals ascent to be an annual competing team has made finding quality college players a harder challenge in the draft. As a result, for the second year Kansas City prioritised potential with High School picks making up most of their draft class.

With the 31st pick, the selected 21-year-old TCU outfielder Panthea Theothanou. A weak defender, Panthea has potential to display plus contact and gap power, with above average power and eye. He will start in A ball, which will challenge him.

The rest of the Royals picks in the first 5 rounds were:
  • Round 1 (Suppl.), Pick 6 - SP Devin Cooper, age 18 out of high school – throwing 93-95mph Cooper has potential to have two plus-plus pitches, along with an average third pitch, as part of a potential 85-50-55 profile.
  • Round 2, Pick 28 - C Andy Alexander, age 18 out of high school – plus-plus power, with a plus eye to couple with average contact would be a great DH profile for someone who defensively will be a bat-first Catcher at best.
  • Round 3, Pick 23 - SP Jeremy Miller, age 17 out of high school – three plus-plus pitches for this 93-95mph pitcher who profiles to have 80-55-55 potential.
  • Round 4, Pick 23 - C Markas Huffman, age 18 out of high school – plus-plus contact with an above average eye and average power, Huffman will move to 1B and was considered a stretch by many in the 4th Round but was high on Stewart’s board.
  • Round 5, Pick 23 - LF Kevin Davis, age 18 out of high school – plus power and eye with above average contact, with plus stealing ability, gives Davis a great shot at success, especially with a high work ethic.

Showing the youth of this Royals draft class, only Theothanou will start in A ball, although 18th round pick reliever Andy Schmeltzer will start in High-A. The rest of the class will start in Rookie ball.

Neither 14th round pick CF Eric McDonald nor 18th pick RP Pat Robin will sign with the Royals, both prioritising school with the Royals unwilling to match their $11m+ requirement to sign.

Overall, this may be the least inspiring class of Stewart’s tenure with only Cooper and Miller really bringing much excitement and they have a long road ahead. The biggest disappointment for the Royals was missing out on reliever Pat Black, a knuckleballer Kansas City were tracking for their third-round pick. The Blue Jays took him with the 13th pick of the second round, scuppering Royals knuckleball fun plan.

The top five picks of the draft, headlined by two developed college infielders, were:
  • Round 1, Pick 1 - Pittsburgh Pirates: 3B Ismael Betancur, age 21 out of college
  • Round 1, Pick 2 - Cleveland Guardians: SS Eric Rose, age 22 out of college
  • Round 1, Pick 3 - San Antonio Avalanche: 3B Luis Castro, age 18 out of high school
  • Round 1, Pick 4 - Philadelphia Phillies: 3B Dan Crowell, age 22 out of college
  • Round 1, Pick 5 - Toronto Blue Jays: SP Jeff Williamson, age 19 out of high school

MLB Standings

The Royals (59-46) use a strong July to extend their leaf in the AL Central to a season-high 5 games. They trail only the Red Sox (62-43) in the AL standings while the Mariners (57-47) lead the AL West. It’s the Astros (55-48), the Yankees (54-49) and the White Sox in the Wild Card places {wild card} although there are six teams within ½ a game.

In the National League, the Padres (62-44) are a ½ game behind the Red Sox for best record in baseball, with The Phillies (60-43) the third team with 60 games, and the Pirates (59-44) close behind. The Wild Card race isn’t quite as close with the Brewers (59-45), the Giants (58-47), and the Rockies (57-48) taking the three spots.

Kansas City Results

The Royals had their best month of the season, going 16-7, winning five series out of eight. In the AL Central, they split a four-game home series against the White Sox and swept the Tigers 3-0.

They won both AL series, 2-1 against the Rays, and a sweep of the Orioles. Interleague play saw their only series loss of the month. Having beaten the Braves to clinch the series at the start of the month, they then went on the road and beat the Diamondbacks 2-1 and split a two-games series against the Cardinals before dropping a home series against the Dodgers 2-1. They finished the month taking the first game of a home series against the Brewers.

Will Gasparino (-120 wRC+) was not getting enough bats, and not doing enough with the ones he received, to justify a place on the roster. Tim Storer (119 wRC+) carried on where he left off after his All-Star snub, recording almost 3 WAR for the month. Luis Gotay (100 wRC+) continues to provide solid offence with elite outfield defence.

Aidan May (210 ERA+) has been the star of the starting rotation this year, putting together another strong month. Cade Townsend (85 ERA+) gave up 5 HRs in his first two starts of the month but finished with a 7.1 inning, one hit outing against Detroit which he will hope to carry into August.

Transactions & Injuries

Friday, July 23rd , 2032Sunday, July 25th , 2032
  • Traded 24-year old minor league LF Pamphile DeCaro to the San Antonio Avalanche, getting 36-year old RHP James Karinchak (retaining 40%) and $1,000,000 in cash in return.
  • Optioned LF Will Gasparino to Triple A Omaha.

The hunt for a power hitting first baseman took the Royals to Washington where Luis Zesati had struggled in his first season in the Major Leagues but ratings of above average contact and a plus power bat with plus defence at 1B suggest he is positioned for success. The Royals had to retain 75% of Owen’s contract, as well as giving up plus contact 1B Sergio Perales and two organisational pieces but hopefully the added power will give the Royals the extra offence they need through October.

The second trade the Royals made was to secure an elite reliever. The Avalanche are out of contention and looking to ship payroll. The Royals played hardball, requiring the Avalanche to retain 40% of salary, and to add $1m to the deal. Karinchak, although now 36, still has plus stuff, with a plus fastball and plus-plus curveball. He had added almost 2 WAR in a closing role with the Avalanche, a role he will take as a secondary for the Royals. De Caro was an organisational piece the role were happy to part with to secure the Karinchak. The addition of everyday 1B Zesati had freed up Goodman to play in the outfield, making Gasparino a luxury for the Royals; he has been sent back to Omaha to try to turn his season around.

A 17-10 month showed more Royals success as six series victories were secured.

It was tougher going in the AL Central as they went to Detroit and were swept 0-3 before splitting a 4-game series in Cleveland. A trip to Minnesota and a 2-1 series victory steadied things but they dropped the first game of a three game series in Chicago to finish the month.

In American League play, it was two out of two with home series wins against the Orioles (2-1) and the Mariners (3-0). Interleague play brought more success – two wins against the Brewers to start the month and complete a three-game sweep, before spltting home games against the Cardinals. A 2-1 victory in Chicago against the Cubs came before the Phillies visited Kansas City and were swept 3-0.

Steve Carter (9 wRC+) has really struggled over the season and may be at risk of a demotion as the season enters its final regular season month as his mediocre glove requires a strong bat for him to be of value. Bobby Witt Jr. (182 wRC+) could be rounding into form at the right time, a .629 SLG% and a 10% walk rate making him a risk in every at-bat.

Aiden May (259 ERA+) continues to dominant in every outing, another 1.2 WAR this month taking him to 5.0 for the season with a month to go. Cade Townsend (270 ERA+) had a 1.67 ERA over his 5 starts, earning the Pitcher of the Month Award, with pitched almost 100 pitches a game, on course for 190 innings for the season.

The bullpen was generally strong and with William Schmidt (145 ERA+) taking 17 and Wen-Hui Pan (77 ERA+) taking 12.1 innings of work during the month, generally rested as September begins.

Colin Stewart also recorded his 500th win in MLB on the 1st day of the month.

The Royals relief depth is being put to the test with Jake Early and T.J. Brock both missing the rest of the regular season with strained hamstrings.

The Royals are a ‘best in baseball’ 94-64 with just four October regular season games to play. They will finish with the best record in the AL, with the Rangers (84-74) just about having wrapped up the West and the Red Sox (85-73) looking to hold off the Yankees (83-75) in the East. The East’s runner-up will earn a Wild Card alongside the White Sox (86-73) with the Mariners (80-78) and the Astros (79-80) fighting for the final spot.

Over in the NL, the Brewers (93-66) have the best record but haven’t sown up the division yet although the Cubs (90-69) trail by 3 games; both teams have locked up post-season berths. The Phillies (90-69) are the run-away winners of the East while the Padres (90-69) and the Giants (90-69) are locked in a battle for the title but both teams will make the playoffs. The defending Champion Rockies are locked in a three-way tie with the Pirates and the Cardinals at 84-74 for the final wild card spot.

The Royals are 40-20 since the All Star Break after an 18-8 September that saw them wrap up a third AL Central title in a row (equalling the record of the 1976-78 squad) and secure a fourth consecutive postseason berth (a Royals record).

They won six of eight series, including sweeping all AL series. They opened the month taking both games in Chicago to take the series 2-1, and home a home series against the same opponents by the same score. In their two final home divisional series they beat the Twins 2-1, before sweeping the Guardians, the first win (21 September) securing them a Wild Card place.

They had two series against AL opponents, both on the road; they beat the Astros 3-1 and then the Red Sox 2-1. National League opposition gave the Royals their two series losses as they travelled to Pittsburgh and lose 2-3, before the Giants came to KC and won two games to take the Series. The Royals weren’t too sore though, as they smashed 19 runs in the final game of the series to win their 3rd consecutive pennant at home. They finished the month taking both games in Washington in a series they will complete on October 1st.

A couple of players will be hoping they have got a slump out of the way with both Jonathan Gerew (27 wRC+) and Tim Storer (31 wRC+) having difficult months. Both struggled with Strikeouts, Gerew over 10% up on his career average and Storer 5%. They will hope to turn that around heading into the post season.

Bobby Witt Jr. (171 wRC+) did not have that problem as he slugged a .611 for the month to take his WAR above 5 for another season. It has been an incredible second half for a player who had a 0.2 WAR contribution at the end of June.

Mike Hoffer showed off his potential, a Pitcher and Rookie of the Month winning performance across 5 starts in which he struck out over 35% of batters he faced across 33 innings.

The bullpen was up and down and with T.J. Brock and Jake Early on rehab assignments in AAA the postseason roster of arms will involve some interesting decisions.

The Brewers win their first-ever World Series, joining National Leagues teams the Padres and the Rockies in winning their first-ever title since 2023. The Seattle Mariners and the Tampa Bay Rays are the last remaining World Series-less teams in Major League Baseball.

Owner Goals Review

Attachment 1023649

The Royals achieved three of the four owner goals over the season – they reached the playoffs, with an extended Mason Barnett and improved their stolen bases from 12th to 11th. Edgar Manzo (2026) was the first International Amateur promoted to the Big Leagues, contributing 0.1 WAR as a September call up, but he was signed the year before Stewart arrived.

Fan Interest has increased to 81 so is on track for a 2035 goal, while reaching the World Series shows progress towards the ultimate World Series-winning goal for that year.

2032 Year End Player Evaluation

The Royals fell just short for the second year in the row but in reaching the World Series again proved themselves as one of the elite teams in baseball.

Catchers

Jonathan Gerew (67 wRC+) wasn’t able to match his 2031 All-Star season as his line declined by .060/.036/.098. He continues to provide above average defence but as he enters his arbitration years, the Royals must decide his future.

Dave Holcombe (112 wRC+) missed 7 weeks across 3 injuries in the regular season and all of the post season with a 4th injury. The Royals will see what interest there is in the market for an elite defensive Catcher.

Miguel Palma (44 wRC+) covered limited plate appearances during Holcombe’s injuries while Walt Day (78 OPS+ AAA) struggled with the bat but put up 15 WAR with his defensive ability to pass his audition to back up Gerew next year if Holcombe is traded.

Infield

Midseason acquisition 1B Luis Zesati (106 wRC+) was above average in 62 games for the Royals and lit up the post-season to prove a valuable acquisition who will earn the league minimum next year. With some development in his eye and gap power available the Royals will hope for even more from him in 2033.

Tim Storer (97 wRC+) didn’t quite show the power he had at the end of 2031 but 18 HRs is a solid return from 2B. He had the 6th highest wRC+ of second baseman to provide 5+ Zone Rating. Storer will return at 2B in 2033.

Jeremy Rogerson (116 wRC+) produced a very similar, well above average, season to 2031. The highest wRC+ of all third baseman to offer over 2 ZR, Rogerson is the third baseman the Royals have been looking for since Stewart arrived.

Bobby Witt Jr. (118 wRC+) turned his season around after a torrid start to remain in the elite echelon of Major Leagues SS. Of players to produce more wRC+ at SS, only Rusty Kopp and Masyn Winn had a better ZR. His injury has seen him return to fragile and he will spend the offseason on a strength and conditioning programme to try to reverse that. Three seasons left under contract, Witt Jr. is now 13.1 WAR behind George Brett (71.7) for the Royals record. Taking that record, and securing a World Series, would but Witt Jr. at the front of the conversation for greatest Royal ever.

Steve Carter (87 wRC+) did not play to his ratings as he struggled with the glove throughout the season. Plus contact and gap power should be enough to secure him another season as a back-up infielder for the Royals. William Bergolla (90 wRC+) was a competent back-up infielder in very limited opportunities but the Minor League Free Agent has work to do over the Spring if he is to retain a spot on the roster.

Outfield

Only 13 outfielders produced more ZR than Luis Gotay’s (113 wRC+) 9.0 and, of those, only 6 had a higher wRC+. Gotay is nailed on in CF for the Royals in 2033.

Wyatt Langford (114 wRC+) earned his first All Star nomination while offering a solid bat in LF. However, the post season was a disaster for the two-time ALDS MVP winner, and this may have cost him an extension with the Royals, although the Qualifying Offer is an attractive option.

The acquisition of Zesati allowed a shuffle in the outfield; firstly allowing Jimmy Goodman (110 wRC+) to move to RF to offer above average defence. This allowed Billy Mumaugh (121 wRC+) to move to the DH role in which he excelled, leading the team in HRs (25) and RBI (95). The Royals will challenge him to record a 30-100 season in 2033.

Sheng-En Lin (72 wRC+) was the 5th outfielder for most of the season, offering an acceptable glove, especially through his primary role as a reliever. He is eligible for arbitration for the first time and the Royals will likely come to terms with him, but they may explore the market before and after the deal is signed. Edgar Manzo (104 wRC+) was a September call up who performed well in very limited at-bats who will look for a bigger role in 2033.

Starters

Mason Barnett (95 ERA+) was one of only five Royals pitchers to be below league average in the first year of his new contract. This was mainly from a lack of defensive support as his FIP (3.68) was over a run lower than his ERA. An increased strikeout rate gave him his most Ks (181) since 2025 and helped take him to 3rd on the all-time Royals list. His experience and consistency should ensure the Royals pick up his 2033 option at $11m

Cade Townsend (138 ERA+) stepped up to lead the rotation and more than did his job, 3.7 WAR and a 17-5 record reflecting a solid season. Underpinned by the 6th most strikeouts in a Royals season (217) and the 5th lowest Opponent Average (.210). At a league minimum salary, Townsend is a safe bet to return in 2033.

Aiden May (174 ERA+) was the star of the season for the Royals pitching staff. As well as receiving his first All-Star nomination, May cracked the Royals Top Ten season lists for OAVG (1st – 0.189), WHIP (2nd – 0.94), K/BB (2nd – 4.6), ERA (6th – 2.59), and Strikeouts (9th – 207). Entering his first year of arbitration, May’s trade stock may never be higher and the Royals will consider offers for him.

J.J. Paniagua (125 ERA+) was solid in his first full season in the rotation; his 8.4 K/9 rate marking him out as offering something different for the Royals.

Marcos Paz (94 ERA+) struggled in 12 starts before a torn rotator cuff ended his season. A walk rate of 6.1 is unsustainable and Paz may be a casualty of the logjam of pitching the Royals face from prospects this offseason.

Mike Hoffer (126 ERA+) is leading the list of those prospect, having come up to the rotation August and earned 2.4 War in only 11 starts. A potential 60-60-60 profile with five pitches, a long-term contract is being considered by the Royals.

Bullpen

There are few hard decisions to be made for the Royals in a bullpen, which was solid but possibly slightly down on previous years.

David Hagaman (114 ERA+) and Wen-Hui Pan (89 ERA+) are arbitration eligible, while James Karinchak (245 ERA+) is a free agent and T.J. Brock (133 ERA+) has a Team Option. Sheng-En Lin (185 ERA+) was discussed above with the outfield.

Hagaman continues to provide above league average relief and, while not a high leverage or stopper candidate, is value for money in his first arbitration year. Pan, however, struggled in 2032, with a drop in his command seeing his BB/9 rate increase by over 2 walks per nine to 5.0. A arbitration of over $6.5m is too rich for the Royals and he will not be offered arbitration.

Karinchak remains an elite reliever but at 37 years old is not someone to whom the Royals will offer a multi-year contract (he is looking for 4 years at $10m+), especially with his stuff having dropped by 15 points in less than 12 months.

T.J. Brock’s option is for $1.7m and, despite his fragile conditioning, provides value for money for a popular player.

Among the remaining bullpen arms only William Schmidt (123 ERA+) and Jonathan Fleri (194 ERA+) are locks for 2033 having offered solid contributions through the year.

At risk from internal promotions and any free agent signings will be Nicanor Berns (80 ERA+), Eric Cook (92 ERA+), Jim Porter (114 ERA+), and Colin White (112 ERA+).

2032 Front Office Review

3 Attachment(s)
Owner Goals

As always, a new offseason came with new goals.

Attachment 1023760

Two long-term goals remained for Stewart to work towards, improving fan interest and winning the World Series. Both remain on track for a 2035 deadline.

Fresh in 2032, was the challenge to win the Championship in 2034 (a year earlier than the long-term goal), to improve Stolen Bases in 2033 (2032 was an increase from 12th to 11th) and to acquire a Great Glove winner by 2035.

None of these challenges are insurmountable although how active the pursuit of stolen bases and Great Glove winners will be remains to be seen.

In fact, at the start of 2033, Stewart would speak to Sherman and suggest changing the Stolen Bases goal to an upgrade at Catcher, reflected above.

Finances

Not for the first time, Royals owner Sherman reflected on a successful year by cutting budgets. Having originally forecast a budget of $212m back in November 2030, the announced budget was only $166m, with player payroll of $55m. This is clearly unviable with Bobby Witt Jr., Jimmy Goodman, and Billy Mumaugh earning $49m between them. The final player budget, therefore, will be higher than $55m but it is clear it will not be a year of spending during Free Agency.

Attachment 1023761

This is despite another year of high attendances (21% higher than when Stewart arrived) and fan loyalty that has now increased to Average {insert fan interest link}.

Personnel

There was only one staffing departure at the end of the season; Rookie Pitching Coach Andy Altemus not receiving an extension to his contact. He was replaced by Jay Rainville who arrived on a one-year contract.

Colin Stewart was rewarded for reaching the World Series with another one-year contract, increasing his salary to $1.9m although the lack of stability from single year extensions is a challenge.

Minor Leagues

Awards

Amongst award winners, particular highlights were Dan Jones winning his 5th consecutive Manager of the Year Award at AA while Josh Olaniyan (2026 2nd Round pick) made it back-to-back drafted players winning the Outstanding Pitcher Award at AAA.

Rookie (ACL) Mathew Figueroa Manager of the Year
Rookie (DSL) Jason Flach Manager of the Year
AA Dan Jones Manager of the Year

Rookie (DSL) Sa-yoon Kim Outstanding Pitcher Award
AA Vince Baron Outstanding Pitcher Award
AAA Josh Olaniyan Outstanding Pitcher Award

Notable Retirements

The 2026 draft class saw 10th round reliever Shea Wendt retire having reached the AA level.

The 2027 class (Stewart’s first) had five retirements, including two former minor league Outstanding Pitcher award winners:
• 11th Round: AA 2B Manny Marin
• 12th Round: R-ACL CF Braylon Payne 2028 ACL Gold Glove CF
• 16th Round: A+ RP Billy Turner
• 17th Round: AAA RP Jorge Lucino 2030 A+ Outstanding Pitcher Award
• 18th Round: AA RP Mike Woods 2029 A Outstanding Pitcher Award

The 2028 class lost 10th round pick Haywood Brushett, who never got out of Rookie Ball.

2028 trade acquisition from the Yankees, reliever Nate Brittain also chose to retire from AAA.

KC Top 500 Prospects Performance

Attachment 1023762

Mike Hoffer was the pick of the prospects, as he graduated to the starting rotation and is primed for a big extension in the offseason. However, it wasn’t isolated success as Eddie Baquerizo, Curt Bogans, and Josh Olaniyan all had strong AAA seasons.

On the batting side, Enny Mijhail Van Dyke continues his improvement and will be looking to force his way into the big leagues at Spring Training, while Juan Zubia is ready and almost certain to start on the big-league books in some role. Edgar Mir spent the year in the DSL but looks ready to graduate while Chris Maguire put up 5 WAR in AAA and provides a good riddle for Stewart to solve at 2B.
