April Attachment 1029910 Awards Batter of the month AL: Paul Goldschmidt (2013 Diamondbacks) Batter of the month NL - Dots Miller (2014 Cardinals) Pitcher of the month AL - Bryn Smith (1985 Expos) Pitcher of the month NL - Virgil Barnes (1924 Giants) Injuries Fran Healy (1975 Royals) - Hip (5 weeks) Brian Lawrence (2002 Padres - Ankle (3 months) Adam Eaton (2013 Diamondbacks) - abdominal (3 weeks) American League East 1999 Chicago White Sox - Frank Thomas and the Chicago offense came out hot as the Big Hurt is hitting .400 with good support from Magglio ordonez and Ray Durham. Keith Foulke has 6 saves already as Chicago doesnt seem to be sheepish on their chances in the East. 1975 Kansas City Royals - The Royals lost their starting catcher til likely the All Star Break and the offense has been slow to rise. The Royals are last in OBP but they are first in steals with 33. Early signs in the Royals pen are not good with no one taking the initative. 1985 Texas Rangers - Good hitting and terrible pitching is already the hallmark of this club. A 5.22 team ERA in April lead to the 16 losses as the team will likely lean on 37 year old Charlie Hough. Oddibe McDowell and Buddy Bell have combined for 7 HR and 27 RBI. 1969 Pittsburgh Pirates - The slowest starters of the contenders is surely the Bucs. Jim Bunning and Doc Ellis have been blasted in the rotation and the loss of Steve Blass to injury keeps the pressure on. After sweeping the 2002 Padres on the road to open the season, the club went 6-17 the rest of the opening month. American League West 2013 Arizona Diamondbacks - Paul Goldschmidt is on fire and won player of the month honors hitting .375 with 25 RBI. The DBacks are determined to be a factor in this division and the start shows it. Ian Kennedy is 4-1 and Brando McCarthy 4-0 while they are supported by Eric Chavez and a stellar defense. 1985 Montreal Expos - Last in home runs and last in average may have had you think the Expos started terribly, but a 14-13 record has them relevant. Bryn Smith was a big bright spot winning pitcher of the month with 4 wins and a 2.37 ERA. As expected, the Spos have looked much better at home early on. 1919 Chicago White Sox - They were having a good month until they lost their last four as all eyes remain on the 1919 Sox. Joe Jackson revives the legend hitting .371 with 8 home runs making it all look easy. They Sox pen is a problem as expected but the starters, Eddie Cicotte and Red Faber keep the scores down and the games close. The Sox should have a much better record. 2002 San Diego Padres - Jake Peavy is looking fresh and throwing hard and Trevor Hoffman has 8 saves as the Padres don't expect to be anyones pushovers. Still, hitting for average will be an issue and waiting on home runs seemingly the only hope on offense. The injury to starter Brian Lawrence until the All Star Break is not a good development. National League East 2018 New York Mets - Wow! The Mets came out of the gate flying and at one point won 10 in a row including a 21 run outburst against the Astros. Still the Mets did lose four in a row to end the month but still have alot to build on. Jacob DeGrom already has 5 wins and looks great while Jeff McNeil batting fourth has 27 RBI. Can the Mets keep it going? 1954 Detroit Tigers - Solid pitching and nothing spatacular have the Tigers off to a decent start. Bob Nieman is hitting .346 with 5 HR but Al Kaline is off to a slower start with only 8 RBI ; remember he is only 19. The Tigers are 0-5 against leftys which is a concern. Dick Donovan looks like the real deal as the closer of this club early on. 2015 Pittsburgh Pirates - No 4th starter was an issue for the Pirates in April as the club struggled after their big three lead by Gerrit Cole were resting. Andrew McCutchen has been super early on as has Starlin Marter both in the field and at the dish. On the down side Francisco Cervelli went 3 for 38 to end the month and Gregory Polanco went 2 for 27. Some real holes for a team that won 98 games for Clint Hurdle to deal with. 2008 Houston Astros - Jose Valverde was lit up late in games as the Astros found their bullpen and then some to be an issue in only an 8 win month. The team ERA is 5.51 as the club went 0-7 to start the year and lost 6 of 8 to finish it. The Astros are also last in home runs and dont pick it on defense very well. This could be a long hot summer in Houston. National League West 1924 New York Giants - A sweep of the Tigers to start the season and the Giants were on their way to an 18 win month. John McGarw has told his team he has only the pennant on his mind. George Kelly hit .372 and Travis Jackson drove in 21 while Hack Wilson hit 8 long ones. The Giants are first in almost all offensive catagories, it is early but still.. 1914 St. Louis Cardinals - Dots Miller was batter of the month hitting an eye opening .425 as the Cardinals has a good start. Bill Doak is 4-0 and Slim Sallee also looks good giving St. Louis a very good 1-2 punch. The Cards did lose the last two games of the month badly at the Polo Grounds, they will have to show more against New York if they expect to really compete. 1944 Chicago Cubs - The Cubbies took 16 games in April as the likes of Andy Pafko had a read hot start. Hank Wyse was hit hard with an ERA over 6 but the rest of the Cubs rotation was steady with Paul Derringer and Claude Passeau tough cookies to break. Chicago is poised to be one of those teams that is better then most people expect. 2021 Arizona Diamondbacks - Last in OPS and average it was no suprise that this team won only 10 games. The Arizona pen is good lead by Joakim Soria but along with the weak bats the snakes rotation has not pitched well as Luke Weaver and Merrill Kelly have been murdered for the most part. Trayce Thompson hit .175 for the month at the top of the lineup and Daulton Varsho with Carson Kelly also finished April under the Mendoza line. |

May Attachment 1030652 Awards Batter of the month AL: Joe Jackson (1919 White Sox) Batter of the month NL - Andrew McCutchen (2015 Pirates) Pitcher of the month AL - Dicke Kerr (1919 White Sox) Pitcher of the month NL - Claude Passeau (1944 Cubs) Injuries Brian Moehler - 2008 Astros - Tommy John (Season) Jeremy Beasley - 2021 Diamondbacks - Elbow (Season) American League East 1999 Chicago White Sox - Frank Thomas has upped his game and is hitting .370 as the Sox look to maintain their slim lead in the East. Mike Sirotka is 8-2 and the Chicago rotation has held its own while the offense sizzles. Along with Thomas, Paul Konerko and Ray Durham both hit over .400 for the month. 1969 Pittsburgh Pirates - After a slow start, the Bucs mean business winning 19 games in May and making a move for the top. Willie Stargell is hitting .333 and Roberto Clemente is a clutch man at the plate with 36 RBI. Bob Veale and Bob Moose both caught fire at the end of the month as the Pirates lead the league in FIP at 3.51. 1985 Texas Rangers - The Rangers pen has been a headache but Bob Sebra stepped up as a stand in ace keeping an 1.87 ERA in his last 6 starts. Gary Ward has 10 home runs and is hitting .330 while Buddy Bell is making a case for an allstar season. Still it is a bit of a Texas stretch to think this team can compete. 1975 Kansas City Royals - The Royals are suppose to be much better then this but they honestly haven't hit the way they should; even George Brett is under .300 as of June 1st. John Mayberry is making the case for the home run crown with 20 already but the club remains last in runs and is hitting .229 collectively. American League West 2013 Arizona Diamondbacks -Quite the ride in the desert for the snakes as they win 19 games in May and seem to be much more confident then the favored Black Sox. Aaron Hill and Paul Goldschmidt have both driven in over 40 runs each while David Hernandez and JJ Putz have made a formidable combination out of the pen. Arizona is first in OPS and runs scored. 1919 Chicago White Sox - People are still scratching their heads about this team. All the talent in the world but a -5 game difference from actual to pythagorean records. Joe Jackson is hitting .403 in a monumental season while Eddie Cicotte has a 2.12 ERA. Still, the Sox find ways to lose games, which opens up many more questions then answers. 1985 Montreal Expos - Last in home runs but first in steals, the Expos try and stay relevant to no avail. The offense is steady with Tim Raines and Andre Dawson producing in the middle of the order but the starting pitching has fell off for Buck Rodgers and there remain few answers. The Expos are 9-20 away from home and are the oldest team by age in this league. 2002 San Diego Padres - Ryan Klesko hit .400 in May and Phil Nevin has 35 RBI but the Padres are still scaring no opposing pitcher with their lineup. Jake Peavy is looking strong with a 2.39 ERA but that's where the good news ends for Padres pitching. The Padres have surprised by losing 14 one run games already with the strong pen the team has on paper. National League East 2018 New York Mets - The Mets still hold a healthy lead in the east as Yoenis Cespedes has 12 home runs and is hitting .337 as the Mets are hitting .284 as a team. JaCob DeGrom has 9 wins and Zach Wheeler is coming into his own as New York starting pitching is their strength. Amed Rosario is batting .343 at the top of the order. 1954 Detroit Tigers - Finding themselves in second place, the Tigers feel like there is a summer run in them to make this a true race in the East. Bob Nieman leads most offensive categories and Al Kaline has fit in well in the leadoff spot. The Tigers have only 2 wins against lefties, making them vulnerable, especially to the first place Mets. 2015 Pittsburgh Pirates - A team that lost its confidence and its way completely losing 14 games in a row and digging a hole deep into the season. Bad defense was a big culprit and little support on offense other then Andrew McCutchen who did his all to turn things around winning hitter of the month honors. The season is still early but the pen is disheartened and the Bucs will need a complete change in approach if they are to turn this around. 2008 Houston Astros - Miguel Tejada and Lance Berkman and that is all for this Astros team that is in between winning generations and isnt competing on the pitchers mound. Already 16 games out, it could be a very long season deep in the heart of Texas. National League West 1924 New York Giants - Steady as can be the Giants are sailing finally reaching in first place. It does appear that they will have a fight on their hands all season from the 1944 Cubs. Frankie Frisch is a managers dream hitting .322 and Hack Wilson has 15 home runs and 36 driven in. The team is first in home runs with 96. This club can also pick it leading in defensive efficiency and double plays. 1944 Chicago Cubs - The Cubbies mean business winning 19 games in May. Bill Nicholson and Andy Pafko are driving everyone in while Stan Hack and Phil Cavarretta get it done at the top of the order as Chicago leads in OBP. Claude Passeau and his offspeed stuff is playing well while Hy Vanenberg has settled in as closer with 10 saves. The Cubs believe they can win this. 1914 St. Louis Cardinals - Quietly playing well, the Cards are only 4.5 games back, right where they want to be after two months. Bill Doak is an ace no one has heard of but has won 8 of 10 starts. Dots Miller is chasing Joe Jackson with a .381 average and 44 driven in. The Cards have stolen an even 100 bases and are a fun group to watch. 2021 Arizona Diamonbacks - Slight improvement from the Dbacks but they are still lagging in the NL West. Their starting pitching seems like it has lost its way as the team ERA is at 4.78. Much more is needed from Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly. Katel Marte is having an allstar season but the power isnt really present and thats bad news in this division. Madison Bumgarner has a 7.62 ERA and lost his job in the Arizona rotation. |

Season 4
June Attachment 1032069 Awards Batter of the month AL: Paul Goldschmidt (2013 Diamondbacks) Batter of the month NL - Hack Wilson (1924 Giants) Pitcher of the month AL - Bob Sebra (1985 Rangers) Pitcher of the month NL - Virgil Barnes (1924 Giants) Injuries Jimmy O'Connell (1924 Giants) - Fractured Finger (2 weeks) American League East 1969 Pittsburgh Pirates - The favored Pirates finally take over first from the White Sox but know that this race will likely last all season. Jim Bunning has turned it on for the Bucs with a 2.18 ERA over his last 12 starts while Matty Alou has paced the offense hitting .342 from the top of the order. The Pirates defense as expected has been excellent. 1999 Chicago White Sox - A losing month coming back to earth, Jerry Manuel needs to get his team focused again. Chris Singleton has helped pace a good offense supporting Frank Thomas and Mags Ordonez hitting .307 from the three slot. The Sox defense however leads the league in errors while the starting rotation has been hit hard as Mike Sirotka and James Baldwin are showing they may not be up to leading this group. 1985 Texas Rangers - Fortunate to be only four games out, the Rangers will not go away. They beat the Pirates twice and swept the 1924 Giants showing everyone they can compete. Bob Sebra stepped up and won pitcher of the month honors while Toby Harrah has hit .448 over his last 10 games. Texas has a real opportunity to push a division that is wide open. 1975 Kansas City Royals - Still a dark horse, these Royals have the talent to still make a run. A better month for the offense but statistically they are still way behind other clubs. They do have 93 steals and Dennis Leonard has pitched well with a 1.84 ERA his last two starts. The pen has also showed life as Bob McLure seems to have the closer role as KC is only 16-17 in one run games. American League West 2013 Arizona Diamondbacks - There is no fluke in this team as they continue to roll with the best record in the league. Paul Goldschmidt won player of the month acclaim again in his terrific season already with 76 RBI. Ian Kennedy is 13-3 as a starter and Patrick Corbin is at his best with a 0.77 ERA over his last three starts. The DBacks lead the league with 88 home runs and seem to be having fun along the way. It seems to be a rare dominant team for the franchise. 1919 Chicago White Sox - Three crucial games to open July in the desert against Arizona. The Sox need to prevent falling behind farther and hurting their confidence even more. As expected, the team from this era has no pen but the starting pitching has been could but has been wasted. Joe Jackson cooled off a bit but Eddie Collins has really gotten hot hitting .522 in the last week of the month. Can the Sox make a consistent run, the month of July should tell us alot more. 2002 San Diego Padres - The Padres have fallen off likely too far as we hit midsummer, and finishing the season could be a formality. Jake Peavy has looked awesome with his 2.68 ERA and 93 strikeouts. The hitting has not showed up with a .319 team OBP and a .247 team average overwhelming no one. Trevor Hoffman remains untouchable with 23 saves but the pen behind him has not followed suit. 1985 Montreal Expos - Andre Dawson had a strong June hitting .417 while Tim Raines is hitting .311. Beyond the Expos stars however there has been little to be excited about. The pitching has allowed the most runs in the league and it has been the starters that cant seem to keep games close. The Expos are only 12-29 away from home and have the worst defensive efficiency in the league. Still be sure that Montreal will support and love their team. National League East 2018 New York Mets - The Mets have cooled off a bit since April but with this division playing so poorly, they have the most comfortable lead of all teams. Ahmed Rosario has set the table all season while Cespedes remains hot with 21 home runs and 63 RBI. Jeff McNeil has also driven in 63 but in the end it has been the bog guns in the rotation that identify this club. jacob DeGrom has struck out 125 batters while Noah Syndegaard and Zack Wheeler have helped the Mets hold the best FIP and pitching WAR in the league. Its a fun season for Mets fans with no slowdown in sight. 1954 Detroit Tigers - Only 10 wins for this club in June as the team looks slow and old on the bases and in the field. Dick Donovan has been hammered as a potential closer with a 7.63 ERA in the month while the rotation has been erratic other then Billy Hoeft who has 125 K's and has looked very good. This Tiger team just does not have the depth of the ability really to have a winning record and to chase down the Mets. 2015 Pittsburgh Pirates - Trying to figure out what is wrong with this team is quite a task. A 98 win team can barely get 10 wins in a month. Gerrit Cole has been beat up with a 5.53 ERA and the rest of the team has followed suit only with Charlie Morton looking good of late. The Pirates run the bases worse then anyone else while they love to strand hitters on base. This team has the talent, but it is about as big a hole as you can dig for yourself heading into the Allstar break. 2008 Houston Astros - Continuing their trend as the worse offense in the entire league, the Astros do deserve credit for staying in game and fighting to avoid a last place finish. Michael Bourn has only 10 RBI on the season while Geoff Blum is hitting just .206. Jose Valverde has kept his closer job by default, but he has blown the few chances he has seen. The worse FIP in the league at 4.66 and a pitching WAR at only 5.0 National League West 1924 New York Giants - New York is playing very good baseball but they just cant seem to shake the Cubs in what is becoming a fin battle. Every Giants starter has won over 10 games and the team ERA is best in the league. The hitting has also stood tall for John McGraw with Hack Wilson staying focused and contributing a solid season in the middle of the order. The .283 team average as well as the 138 home runs makes many wonder how this team can only be a half game up. Closing close games could be a real challenge for this team. The Giants are 28-13 at the Polo Grounds. 1944 Chicago Cubs - Chicago means business and the fans at Wrigley believe this team can do it. Andy Pafko and Bill Nicholson both have over 60 RBI while Eddie Stanky and Stan Hack provide excellent defense for the club. Chicago leads the entire league in strikeouts but the starting rotation has shown some tear during the year. Almost everyone would expect this Cubs team to start to fade, but the team seems to find a way to win and produce when the game is on the line. 1914 St. Louis Cardinals - The Cards have begun to tread water and it has been tough for them to keep pace with the top two. The injury to Dots Miller really hurt the lineup as he was having an allstar season but his return in imminent. The Cards have the most steals in the league and their staff has also done a surprising job second in the league in strikeouts. They were swept by the lowly Tigers to end the month and actually lost 5 of seven to them. They also took a 12-0 drubbing from the Giants at the Polo Grounds. They do still hold a winning record and everything to still play for in July. 2021 Arizona Diamondbacks - Nothing really going good for this Arizona team although Katel Marte is playing well as he went 15 for his last 30. The pitching all around has been a mess and the pen especially has the worst ERA as a group in the league. The club has played better away from home then in the desert and they will need that trend as they play only seven home games in all of July. |

August Attachment 1034308 Awards Batter of the month AL: Eric Chavez (2013 Diamondbacks) Batter of the month NL - Andy Pafko (1944 Cubs) Pitcher of the month AL - Jake Peavy (2002 Padres) Pitcher of the month NL - Mark Melancon (2015 Pirates) Injuries Ned Garver (1954 Tigers) - Ankle (3 weeks) Jordy Mercer (2015 Pirates) - Hamstring (2 weeks) Pennant Race Updates American League East The 1969 Pirates have left everyone in the division in their wake since the end of spring. The 1999 White Sox had a terrible June Swoon as the help around star Frank Thomas hasnt come from anywhere. Bob Veale has won 18 games for the Bucs with 198 K while Roberto Clemente looks as good as ever with 93 RBI. The 1975 Royals saw George Brett finally get hot and is now batting .310 but Royals bats overall could not keep them in the race. The Pirates now have their sights clear on the pennant. American League West The best and only race still remaining it would seem in season 4. The 1919 White Sox turned the corner and started playing great ball again overtaking the 2013 DBacks but then falling off late in August to now sit 2.5 games back. Happy Felsch has picked up the slack for a slumping Joe Jackson while Lefty Williams has 19 wins. First in home runs and first in relief pitching the Arizona teams seems determined to finish strong knowing very well the legend of their opponents. Can the Sox stand up to the late season pressure and avoid missing their chance at redemption as a club. The tension should be high in September with the teams meeting three more times at Comiskey in the final week. The 2002 Padres still sit a relatively distant 8.5 games back in third. National League East It has been the 2018 Mets all season long and there is no reason to dou t that they will finish the job with a 9.5 game lead over Pittsburgh. Mets pitching has been good with Jacob DeGrom having 19 wins in a healthy 249 innings pitched. Seth Lugo has 36 saves and the Mets are 44-26 at home. The 2015 Pirates are playing a bit better but it is coming much too late. The team found its stroke in August but Gerrit Cole sits at a shocking 10-19 with a 4.82 ERA. The Mets have lead this division since April 17th and now also have their eyes focused on the pennant. National League West The 1924 Giants sure know how to turn it on and finish strong. John McGraw lead his team from what was a division race to a sort of runaway from the 1944 Cubs as New York won 19 games in August. The Cubs who were the darlings of the season and leading the race at the all-star break couldn't back up player of the month Andy Pafko and fell victim to some rough patch pitching. Chicago still has the second best record in baseball but it doesn't look like it will be enough. Hack Wilson continues to tear through the league with 38 HR and 105 RBI while Art Nehf has won 18 games and Kent Greenfield was won 17 throwing in 252 innings. The 1924 Giants are likely to be the only team to win 100 this season. |

Arizona played much better then anticipated as star Paul Goldschmidt hit 39 home runs and he and Aaron Hill both drove in over 100 RBI. The team was also best of the bases and were tops in defensive efficiency. David Hernandez and JJ Putz made what was likely the best pen in the league. Arizona proved that they really dont have a glaring weakness. On the other side are the 1969 Pirates who were lost for most of the early season but after the all star break really turned it on and ran away with things in their division; in fact they were the very fist club to clinch. Bob veale went 22-8 in an outstanding season while Bob Moose won 18 games and was almost just as good. Dock Ellis actually moved to the pen and looked competent while the Pirates offense was middle of the road but seemed to get the big hits when they need them. The above all star for the club is Roberto Clemente who had 115 RBI and a knack to do it all on the field. Two unheralded franchises get a chance to play it out for a chance to advance and win the pennant. National League Championship Series https://cdn.ssref.net/req/202411081/...r/NYM-2018.pnghttps://cdn.ssref.net/req/202411081/...r/NYG-1924.png 1924 New York Giants (99-63) vs 2018 New York Mets (81-81) It will be the battle of modern New York with the glory of its past in the NLCS. The 2018 Mets lead from wire to wire in the East as their three headed monster at the top of their rotation was lights out. Jacob DeGrom won 21 games while Zack Wheeler made a great number two with Syndegaard and Matz adding more depth. Seth Lugo saved 41 games and the Mets as a unit lead the league in FIP. Yoenis Cespedes was worth all the hype with 36 HR and 112 RBI. Jeff McNeil hit .321 and Brandon Nimmo blasted 21 home runs. This Mets team did only win 81 games and isn't seeming to get the respect they deserve, but here they are trying to make a miracle of a post season pennant run. The 1924 Giants learned the hard way not to take anything for granted as the 1944 Cubs were on their heels all season long. Still the Giants found a way as John McGraw often does and the famous club ended with the best record in the league with 99 wins. Virgil Barnes won 23 games and the staff held its own but it was Giants hitting that shined this season. The club hit 256 home runs and big Hack Wilson had 44 of them while the club .277 average was also tops. New York did lead the league in errors but many say that is just a result of their aggressive style in the field. The series should be a fine one in the biggest stage of them all. Many feel however that the Giants can only beat themselves and should lift the flag. The Playoffs American League Championship Series Clemente Shines As Bucks Fly Pirates Look Miles Ahead Of Nervous DBacks https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-con...o-clemente.jpg Playing in the regular season is one thing, but when the bright lights of the postseason come on, certain teams and stars seem to steal the limelight. Roberto Clemente is such a player who is at his best on the big stage and in this ALCS, he was brilliant. Clemente went 10 for 18 and played great defense even as the series stood in the balance after the two teams split the in Arizona. The 1969 Pirates took all three games at Three Rivers Stadium including game 5 where Bob Veale threw a three hit shutout and Pittsburgh fans celebrated their pennant. MVP Candidate Paul Goldschmidt did not have a single RBI in the series while Aaron Hill went 1 for 21 as the 2013 Arizona stars fell right out of the sky. Confident and playing some of their best baseball at exactly the right time, the Pirates now look for their grandest moment in the World Series where the best team in the league, the 1924 New York Giants await them. National League Championship Series A Giant Comeback Truly Excellent Giants Refuse To Lose As Shock Haunts Mets https://www.sportsofyore.com/wp-cont...series_mob.png The 1924 New York Giants, who had the best record in the league for season 4, played their best baseball with their backs against the wall in the NLCS to eliminate the 2018 Mets and make it to the World Series. Game Seven was one for the ages, but before we get there, the 2018 Mets looked to have everything in their favor jumping to a convincing 3 games to 1 series lead. Jacob DeGrom pitched a shutout in game one and at CitiField the Mets carried the momentum to get to just one game from the clinch. Virgil Barnes had other ideas and was excellent in game five allowing no runs in 8 plus innings to beat Noah Syndergaard and send the series back to the Polo Grounds. With new life the Giants made an example of the Mets and had the kind of win in game six that losing teams cant recover from. The Giants won 18-4 as George Kelly had 8 RBI and the club ended with a historic 26 hits. The Mets surely felt that the Giants and John McGraw had run up the score and tensions were high anyway for game seven. Jacob DeGrom was the perfect man for the moment. DeGrom held the Giants hitless for five innings but his opponent, Art Nehf, also refused to budge and the game was scoreless in the 8th. Amed Rosario came to the dish and hit a home run almost out of the stadium. Rosario hit it 479 feet and the Mets closed out the 8th and needed three outs to win it. Seth Lugo, the Mets closer who had 41 saves allowed a single to Ross Youngs and with one out faced hank Gowdy. Down two strikes, Gowdy hit a towering fly to left that swayed just fair and changed the entire narrative as the Giants walked it off and Giant fans stormed the field. The Mythology of this one and New York baseball will not be lived down forever. Now the Giants move on to face a rested 1969 Pirates team for the right to win it all. |

Pittsburgh does fight back to make it a game but Rosy Ryan closes out the ninth. George Kelly drives in four and Ross Youngs scores 4 runs off 4 hits. Game 2 - A much closer game as Jack Bentley held a slight lead over Bob Veale and the home team after a Frankie Frisch RBI single in the 5th. The Giants extended their lead in the ninth before Bentley closed it out despite a late home run by Carl Taylor. Hank Gowdy goes 4-4 and after this game it felt there was no way the Pirates could survive and bring the series back to Pittsburgh. Game 3 - The hammer came out for the Giants at the Polo Grounds as their offense swelled including an 8 run sixth inning that put the game away. Art Nehf sailed along for the complete game win while Hack Wilson hit a three run home run and Jim Bunning had nothing in a crucial start foe the Pirates. Wilson had 4 home runs and 12 RBI in the post season. Game 4 - Game 4 was a formality as the Giant fans celebrated a title for season four with an easy 7-1 clinching win. Virgil Barnes pitched well in the win while Frankie Frisch had four hits and a home run to earn MVP honors and Travis Jackson added a two run single. It was a culmination for the Giants who sweated out an ALCS win only to have it their way completely in the World Series. Season 5
April Attachment 1036858 Awards Batter of the month AL: Harmon Killebrew (1964 Twins) Batter of the month NL - Ken Boyer (1960 Cardinals) Pitcher of the month AL - Zack Greinke (2022 Royals) Pitcher of the month NL - Steve Carlton (1977 Phillies) Injuries Bob Kuzava (1949 White Sox) - Tommy John (Season) John Eubank (1906 Tigers) - Tommy John (Season) Bob Rush (1960 Braves) - Back (8 weeks) George McConnel (1912 Highlanders) - Hip (4 weeks) American League West 2022 Kansas City Royals - The Royals find themselves on top of the division very early winning 15 games behind the strong pitching of veteran Zack Greinke. Greinke went 5-0 in the month with a 1.83 ERA while his battery mate Salvador Perez hit .333. Drew Waters has driven 1in 18 runs and Scott Barlow has converted nine saves. It is early, but quite a quick start by a club no one sees competing for a title. 1998 Cleveland Indians - The backend of the rotation has been ugly for the Tribe as Jaret Wright and Charles Nagy may lose their place. The pen has not been better and as expected the Indians have needed to depend on their bats. Travis Fryman is on fire as in David Justice while veteran Shawon Dunston has driven in 14 runs. Cleveland is hitting .280 as a team and sit at .500, they will need pitching if they truly are to compete. 1916 Boston Red Sox - Dutch Leonard has been roughed up and Babe Ruth just average as the favorites got off to a slow start. Ruth did hit a home run on opening day but the club remains last in runs scored early. They are not running much either and all of a sudden a club that was highly favored has created more questions then answers early. Ruth isnt playing at all on his off days. 1906 Detroit Tigers - Nineteen year old Ty Cobb is hitting .349 and shows no signs of slowing down. Still the Tigers are going no where as their offensive WAR as a team is under zero and the team average is .244. Bill Donovan is 0-5 and George Mullin has an ERA over 7. The Tiger s lost 13-2 on opening day, setting a bad omen for the season. American League East 1964 Minnesota Twins - What a start for the Twins who won 19 games and hit .299 as a club for the month. Harmon Killbrew had 40 RBI in the month with 11 home runs while Tony Oliva is hitting .356 in the lead off spot. The offense is really a well oiled machine. Lee Stange is 4-0 and along with Jim Perry has looked sharp. Jim Kaat on the other hand has a 5.84 ERA early and hasn't look comfortable at all. It could be quite the summer at the Land of 1000 lakes. 1966 Detroit Tigers - More was expected from this Tigers club but it has been their bullpen that has been a disaster as the club tries to stay close to .500. Mickey Lolich has been lights out with a 1.98 ERA but too often leads have been blown late forcing Tiger pitching to go deeper into games. The offense got hot near the end of the month and hope the better weather can produce more damage. The team is slow on the bases and in the field but Bill Freehan is a gem behind the plate. 1927 New York Yankees - Rogers Hornsby is hitting only .293, an unthinkable number for him, as the Giants offense has struggled early. George Harper is the exception hitting .379 in the middle of the lineup. The rotation has done its best but Burleigh Grimes has had nothing early on with an 6.96 ERA. It hopefully will get better all around for this team as John McGraw looks for answers into May. 1970 Chicago White Sox - Dennis O'Toole has 7 saves and an ERA at 1.04 but it has been the Sox starters that are struggling sporting a 5.30 ERA as a unit; Tommy John is especially getting hit hard. Luis Aparicio still has all the tools at 36 years old hitting .340 while Ken Berry sits at .378 after one month. The Sox cant complain too much as the entire world has them finishing last in the AL for this season, and the play of the team has not been all that bad, especially on offense. National League East 1918 New York Giants - It should a tough fight all summer long between these Giants and the 1977 Phillies. The Giants lost two out of three to them this month but finished well and hold a half game lead into May. Ross Youngs is hitting .408 and Slim Sallee is 5-0 as the attitude of winning seems obvious for this club. Benny Kauff hit 5 home runs in the final 9 games of the month to help fuel the first place finish of April. 1977 Philadelphia Phillies - Steve Carlton looks to be at his absolute best with a 5-1 record and a 1.04 ERA with 45 K in April. Jim Lonborg has almost been as good with a 1.52 ERA but Tug McGraw has blown a couple of games and Mike Schmidt is hitting only .247. Greg Luzinski has 9 home runs and 28 driven in and the club did finish second in runs scored. The Phils look dangerous and most fully expect them to take off to the top of the league. 1988 Chicago Cubs - Don Zimmer had the Cubbies start hot and even now they are 3.5 games back after the opening month. Ryne Sandberg has been brilliant hitting .340 and playing great defense. Greg Maddux gives any team a shot and has started well with a 2.41 ERA but Rick Sutcliffe among others have struggled, and the Cubs are falling back down to earth quickly, getting swept by the Giants as the month came to a close. 1949 Chicago White Sox - Bob Kuzava went down early this year stealing a major piece to this already undermanned team. Billy Pierce and the rotation has been hit hard as the team ERA is bottom in the league. Only Jerry Scala has over 10 RBI on offense and the 87 runs scored for the entire month speaks for itself. The Sox need answers from somewhere, but the need isnt likely to be met. National League West 1960 Milwaukee Braves - Hank Aaron is pacing the Braves early to their first place lead. Henry has 20 HR and is hitting .364 in what is sure to be a big year. Braves pitching has been stellar also as Joey Jay is 4-0 and Warren Spahn at 39 seems to still have it with a 2.68 ERA. The Braves will look to build on their division lead in May as they are clear favorites for a post season place. 1912 New York Highlanders - Not a bad start at all for the lowly Highlanders who won 16 games. Jack Lelivelt and Roy Hartzell have hit well in the middle of the order and Hal Chase is hitting .303 while flashing some great leather. The rotation also has looked better then expected as New York swept the 57 Giants and took three out of four from the mighty Phillies in the month. Dont expect this to last. 1957 New York Giants - Willie Mays is of course playing well but has been pitched around and isnt playing as big as his rival Aaron. Mays has a .323 average but the lineup is hitting .245 with only seven stolen bases combined. Johnny Antonelli is the only bright spot on the mound as the Giants have struggled. Marv Grissom does have 6 saves without allowing an earned run. The Giants really need a good May to build up hope for contention. 1960 St. Louis Cardinals - Bob Gibson has inflammation is his elbow and Curt Flood has been battling injuries as the Cardinals look to stay in the race. Without Gibson the rotation cant find footing but Larry Jackson has pitched well. Ken Boyer hit .458 in the last week of the season and the St. Louis offense has really produced leading the NL in runs scored. The diagnosis of the Gibson injury is what this team awaits and surely their fate along with it. |

Season 5
May Attachment 1037721 Awards Batter of the month AL: Al Kaline (1966 Tigers) Batter of the month NL - Eddie Mathews (1960 Braves) Pitcher of the month AL - Dutch Leonard (1916 Red Sox) Pitcher of the month NL - Steve Carlton (1977 Phillies) Injuries Bart Johnson (1970 White Sox) - Forearm (6 weeks) Daniel Lynch (2022 Royals) - Elbow (Tommy John) American League East 1998 Cleveland Indians - The Indians were on fire in May winning 20 games and it isnt as easy to see how they are doing it. Their offense has cooled off with Kenny Lofton hitting only .225 and Jim Thome at just 5 home runs. The starting pitching and defense has remain solid as Bartolo Colon continues his strong season and Charles Nagy was pitched better winning his sixth game this month. Cleveland is in a good spot up 6.5 games without playing their best baseball. 1916 Boston Red Sox - Dutch Leonard won the pitcher of the month award really pinning down hitters while Babe Ruth is also very much on point now with 7 wins and a 2.83 ERA. The Red Sox are still looking for offense as they remain last in runs scored. Del Gainer leads them in most offensive categories but there is a real lack of slugg and big innings in this group. Boston will need to keep pace the hard way and may want to think about putting Ruth in the lineup everyday. 2022 Kansas City Royals - Salvador Perez hit .435 for the month and Zack Grienke is still pitching very well despite his age. Daniel Lynch was lost for the season straining the Royals pitching as finding a 4th and 5th starter has been a chore. KC is last in regards to getting on base and are leaning on Bobby Witt Jr who is too young and hitting just .241 at the top of the order. It will be difficult to see any consistency from this team going forward. 1906 Detroit Tigers - Detroit pitching has fallen way off the deep end and now is the worst in the league. Bill Donovan is in for a long season now sitting at 1-10 as a starter while the team ERA is still a high 5.88. The club is 7-23 on the road and are plying worse ball then anyone really could have expected. Lead by Ty Cobb, the club is fun on the bases leading the league with 88 steals and countless extra bases. American League West 1964 Minnesota Twins - Still a winning month even as the Twins cool off a bit. Harmon Killebrew has not cooled off with 18 home runs and 55 RBI heading in June. Bob Allison also has driven in over 50 runs as the Twinkies lead in most offensive categories, not something we generally expected from them. Three starters have seven wins already and Camilo Pascual is stepping forward in a big way at the top. Its still a real race in the West but the Twins are surely the most talented bunch, and with the Killer hitting everything, they look good going into the summer. 1966 Detroit Tigers - Al Kaline was player of the month in the AL and when Kaline is playing well, you know things are going pretty good for Detroit. The club won 18 games in the month to get back into the race as the entire offense has come to life. Mickey Lolich is having a banner year now 6-0 with a 2.45 ERA but the job of relief has been a nightmare for this team with no real closer and a 5.38 bullpen ERA. The Tigers can fine tune some things and give the Twins everything they asked for in what should be a fun summer in the midwest. 1927 New York Giants - A winning month for the Giants but still a big climb for them to get back in the thick of things. The club is first in home runs with 101. Bill Terry has 16 home runs and George Harper 17 while a mature Rogers Hornsby is hitting "just" .289. Burleigh Grimes has struggled with a 5.77 ERA Virgil Barnes has 7 wins and Freddie Fitzsimmons has a nice 3.38 ERA giving this staff some hope. The Giants will have to play much better against the teams in front of them, they are showing signs as they remain over the .500 mark. 1970 Chicago White Sox - These Sox are exactly who we thought they would be as they struggle at the bottom of the division. The club lacks power with only 32 home runs and cant make the most of their .281 team average. Bart Johnson was hurt and the rotation is really keeping this team back. The staff as a whole does lead the league in strikeouts with 283. There really just isnt enough to work with on this roster, but a hot summer at Comiskey should be all fun just the same. National League East 1918 New York Giants - A 19 win month with Larry Doyle hitting .500 in his last 10 games has the Giants ready for a fight in the east. Heinie Zimmerman has driven in 46 and Ross Youngs has set the table well hitting .319 from the top. Jesse Barnes has struck out 84 men while Slim Sallee has his win total up to nine games; 20 looks like a real possibility. Still the Giants are making too many errors and most feel the Phillies will be too much for them in the end. 1977 Philadelphia Phillies - Steve Carlton won pitcher of the month acclaim for the second month in a row and with a 10-2 record and 94 K, he is the front runner for the Cy Young, Greg Luzinski continues his hot hitting and finally some life from Mike Schmidt who now has 15 home runs and 42 RBI. The club is tops in OPS as well as baserunning and Tug McGraw had a better month as they will need him to win the close ones in what has become a very good early race in the East with the Giants. 1988 Chicago Cubs - The Cubs are doing their best to be relevant but sweeps in Detroit and Atlanta really hurt them this month. Don Zimmer has the club playing hard and Greg Maddux has teamed well with Mike Bielecki in the rotation even if both have losing records. The Cubs are second in stolen bases but they dont have much power as slugger Andre Dawson has played in only 45 games with 5 HR. Rafael Palmeiro has really heated up hitting .524 in his last 7 games. 1949 Chicago White Sox - The worst record in the league with only 15 wins this team can brace itself for 100 losses. Bob Cain has a 3.25 ERA but cant win to save his life with a record of 1-9 because the Sox really can not get on base and score runs. The club has also hit only 27 home runs in two months and the likes of 42 year old Luke Appling hitting .333 to lead the team. The Sox have only one 8 times at home and teams are looking forward to playing them on the schedule. Forty losses on June 1st is not where anyone wants to be. National League West 1960 Milwaukee Braves - Another winning month and playing especially well at home the Braves are looking to race to a pennant. Henry Aaron is in his prime here hitting .335 with 17 home runs with Eddie Mathews right behind him adding to pitcher heartache. The team is first in batting WAR as well as home runs and young Joe Torre hit .400 to end the month at 19 years of age. The pitching needs to do a little more to really differentiate this team and the pen especially has had its share of rough ones thus far. Still the Braves can be content where they are heading into the summer months. 1912 New York Highlanders - Sitting at .500 the New York club can be quite proud of itself as they came in with no real aspirations to compete. They have played hard and Hilltop Park is a tough place to navigate for opposing teams. The pitching has stood up well with Ray Keating and Ray Caldwell making parents rethink naming their children. The club has 109 steals to pace the entire league and the forementioned pitchers lead in strikeouts. No one is going crazy thinking all this can last, but the story out of New York is a good one for this team, competing well despite the odds. 1960 St. Louis Cardinals - Stan Musial and Ken Boyer look like what you would expect from this team but the club overall has been average and is at risk of losing sight of the Braves. The team is first in batting average but has not pitched well and the defense other then Curt Flood in center has been quite poor. Bob Gibson is 2-2 with a 3.49 which isnt great but is better then anyone else on the staff but he has only made 6 starts all year. Many feel this St. Louis team will eventually make a run, but there are few signs of that happening on the field at the moment. 1957 New York Giants - A division with Mayes, Aaron, and Musial has lived up to the hype as all three men are playing well. Mays is at .335 and as always is showcasing himself in center. Gail Harris is benefiting from Mays and has driven in 35 runs behind him but the Giants are slow and do not hit for enough power. Marv Grissom has been good as a closer and the pitching has been decent all the way around. The Giants record should be better then what it shows as their PYTHAG has them at .500. The season is not lost yet, but this New York team will need to get hot quickly to save their season. |

Season 5
June Attachment 1038584 Awards Batter of the month AL: Mel Ott (1927 Giants) Batter of the month NL - Larry Doyle (1918 Giants) Pitcher of the month AL - Burleigh Grimes (1927 Giants) Pitcher of the month NL - Tom Underwood (1977 Phillies) Injuries Paul Assenmacher (1998 Indians) - Bicep (3 weeks) Ray Caldwell (1912 Highlanders) - Bone Spur (4 weeks) Slim Sallee (1918 Giants) - Elbow (Season) American League East 1998 Cleveland Indians - Finishing off the first half strong, Mike Haegrove and the Indians are holding off the Red Sox well. Brian Giles is the heart of the team in the middle of the order with 48 RBI while Travis Fryman has 52 RBI and is hitting .326. Jaret Wright has been way off in the rotation and may lose his place while the Indians pen has held its own with Jose Mesa now in a setup role. The loss of Paul Assenmacher will be a concern. 1916 Boston Red Sox - There is still belief that there is plenty of time for Boston to win this. Sixteen wins this month were there most and the hitting has come around just a bit. Babe Ruth is now 12-5 and looks really on his game as the team ace, he also has 8 home runs. Vean Gregg has 18 saves but of course is used sparingly. The team is second in steals and does not score many runs; Boston is notorious for low scoring games. Dufffy Lewis leads the offense with a ,299 average and 37 runs scored. 2022 Kansas City Royals - After a very good April, things could not have gone south faster for this club. The lowest batting average in the league and a starting rotation in shambles along with a lengthy injury list, this isnt going to get any better. Andrew Bennentendi has lost his starting job but a lack of much depth is preventing any real options. Luckily for the Royals, the 1906 Tigers are flaying as well in the division. 1906 Detroit Tigers - Watching a young Ty Cobb hit is always a pleasure as he fights for a batting title now at .363. His influence on the club however isnt there and the Tigers continue to play losing ball. Everyone in the rotation has over 12 losses and it is by their own doing and the loss of John Eubank for the season has made things much worse. The Tigers lead the league ins steals but are last in most other categories across the board. Sam Crawford is another nice player to watch, but the holes and the lack of any pitching wont mean much as far as relevance for this team. American League West 1966 Detroit Tigers - With a roar and 20 wins the Tigers surged into first place. Now a heated race is surely ahead with the Twins and even the 1927 within reach. Denny McLain and Mickey Lolich have lead this charge with their performances on the mound; Lolich has a 13 inning scoreless streak going. Al Kaline is leading the line again with 66 RBI and a .320 average while Norm Cash has belted 19 HR. The Tigers do have the makeup of a pennant winning side. 1964 Minnesota Twins - The Twins are still playing winning baseball but did drop two of three to the surging Tigers. Panic will not set in but Minnesota knows they will have a real fight within the division. The team is an impressive 27-14 on the road and has an .827 team OPS with 23.8 batting WAR. Lee Stange has turned up his game and the Twins defense has always been on point. Harmon Killebrew is up to 80 RBI and is making his continual case for MVP, he should be the favorite in the derby next month. 1927 New York Giants - Belief is growing in the Giants camp that they are legitimate. Rogers Hornsby hit over .400 in the month while starter Burleigh Grimes went 3-0 with a 2.00 ERA to finish the month. An 18 year old kid named Ott has 12 home runs and 48 RBI and has become a fan favorite. Travis Jackson has also turned things around with 55 RBI from the bottom of the lineup and a litany of great plays and support. Three game to start the month in Minnesota and then 4 at Detroit will tell us alot about the intentions of this side. 1970 Chicago White Sox - There is no magic wand to get this Sox team to start pitching and some are calling for Wilber Wood to join the rotation as he has been great late in games. Bill Meton hit .450 in his last 11 games and Carlos May is hitting .331 in the three hole as the Chicago lineup has done some damage. The team is tops in average in the AL at .278. Still the Sox will be nothing more then spoilers this season but no one really expected much from them anyhow. National League East 1918 New York Giants - A 21-6 record for John McGraw's team but they still couldn't really shake a very good Phillies side in the standings. The biggest jolt cam in the loss of team ace Slim Sallee who blew out his elbow and leaves a gaping hole in the rotation. The offense will really need to step it up and they have leading the league in homers and batting average. Even Jim Thorpe has been contributing hitting .409 in his last 14 games while Larry Doyle has hit .500 in his last seven. Is it just a matter of time before this team flinches, or can they remain tight with belief despite some really bad luck. 1977 Philadelphia Phillies - Like a lurking predator the Phillies kept on winning to keep pace with the red hot Giants. Steve Carlton is now 15-4 with his 2.65 ERA and 132 strikeouts; a Cy Young is likely in the cards. The Phillie pen is back on track anchored by Tug McGraw but supported by Warren Bruster and Gene Garber. The offense has been fire as Davey Johnson has set the table for the lethal tandem of Schmidt and Luzinski that have combined for 46 home runs. This club has few if any weaknesses and some real star power. Veterans Stadium will be living hell for most visitors this summer and the Phils are determined to regain the top of the division. 1988 Chicago Cubs - Don Zimmer has had this Cubs team playing hard all season long but they still are under the .500 mark. The main culprit is a poor bullpen even while the starting staff lead by Greg Maddux and a resurgent Mike Harkey have looked good. Andre Dawson has lost his starting job in a very down season and Chicago has only 69 home runs on the season. Darrin Jackson leads the side in RBI while Mark Grace and Ryne Sandberg sit right around their expected .300 range. The Cubs are 21-21 away from Wrigley. 1949 Chicago White Sox - The worst record in the league, the Sox have yet to record 10 wins in a single month. They have so many issues it is hard to find any bright spots. The club has hit just 36 home runs all season and their defense rates last in the league. On player has over 40 RBI in Herb Adams and Luke Appling is a fine talent and should be commended for playing so well over the age of 40. The team is 13-29 at home and is putting together one of the very worst seasons we have seen in the Excellence Project. National League West 1960 Milwaukee Braves - The Braves had a trying month and almost lost their lead in the division but finished strong. The Phillies swept them at home and they lost 4 games in New York but rebounded with a series win against their rival 1960 Cards. Warren Spahn and the pitching staff has kept the team in games but the trend has been to throw around Hank Aaron as the rest of the offense hasnt held their own. Even Eddie Mathews is hitting just .250. Still the Braves are quite optimistic on the second half of the season, and with a 6 game lead and the most talent, are the team to beat. 1960 St. Louis Cardinals - Young Bob Gibson has struggled a bit and the team hasn't found a mix for late game pitching as St. Louis suffers another losing month. It will be very hard to keep pace with the Braves with an ERA that is 7th in the league as well as a team that is second in errors. Stan Musial has hit out 14 and batting .279 at 39 years old in the middle of the order while Bill White and Ken Boyer are both having good seasons at the plate; White has been among the best leadoff men in the league. Still the Cards are just 14-28 on the road and 2-7 in extra inning games; they lose the close ones. 1912 New York Highlanders - After a great April, the New York side has been taking on water but are still just 5.5 games out of first, somewhere no one thought they would be in July. The bats are dead last in the league not withstanding a fine lead off man in Ray Hartzell but it has been the 166 steals that have helped the team as they really do a good job manufacturing runs. Ray Fisher had been lights out going 4-0 with an ERA under one for the month and Ray Keating has kept up the trend including throwing a shutout. The Highlanders are a classic example of a team that knows what they do well, and do exactly that on the diamond. 1957 New York Giants - The Giants also are not completely out of it but dont seem to have the makeup to win regularly. Mike McCormick was the best starter in June having a 1.21 ERA in his 30 innings of work but Ramon Monzant among others have been a weakness in the pen that has a 4.88 ERA. Gail Harris and Willie Mays are up towards 50 RBI but Whitey Lockman has hit about .150 in the month and the bottom of the lineup is really futile. It would be a real shame to waste a fine season from Mays who is up at 5.2 WAR already. |

August Attachment 1040422 Awards Batter of the month AL: George Harper (1927 Giants) Batter of the month NL - Stan Musial (1960 Cardinals) Pitcher of the month AL - Freddie Fitzsimmons (1927 Giants) Pitcher of the month NL - Bob Gibson (1960 Cardinals) Injuries Andre Rodgers (1957 Giants) - MCL (3 weeks) Tommy Thompson (1912 Highlanders) - Forearm (8 weeks) Pennant Chase American League East The race has come down to two teams that are now separated by only a half a game. The 1998 Indians have lead the way the entire season but this month they won only ten games and finally the 1916 Red Sox are on their heels. The Sox took three out of four against the Tribe in a series this in August as Cleveland slipped to only a 10-18 record. Boston has been lead by Dutch Leonard and Babe Ruth who have been dynamite on the mound even as the hitting for the team remains last in the league. The opposite being true for Cleveland who has scored runs in bunches but has seen its pitching sour of late. The two clubs meet for one more series in September but there is everything to play for in a month long sprint to the finish. American League West What a run by the 1927 Giants who surged past the competition in the second half of the season and now hold a clear advantage to finish top. New York went through a stretch of winning 11 of 12 games in August as the offense has cooked with George Harper and Jack Cummings both driving in 100 runs while Mel Ott and Rogers Hornsby also found their form. The 1964 Twins are looking for answers especially on the mound as a 9-18 month has come at the worst time. Harmon Killibrew did hit four home runs in one game for a high point. The 1966 Tigers also have not done themselves any favors as they had a real chance to close the gap in the division but also won only 10 games the entire month and really need a miracle to have a real chance. It is up the the Giants now to cruise and finish things out. Their last 6 games are against the Twins and the Tigers which they hope wont be consequential. National League East The hottest team in the land in the 1918 Giants who refuse to listen to the pundits tell them how the 1977 Phillies will catch them, and have responded with the best record in the league. Heinie Zimmerman has been on fire and now has 99 RBI and Larry Doyle has hit 34 home runs and has 32 doubles; not bad for a second baseman. Yes the Phillies are only three games out and still seem poised to put up a fight to the end. Greg Luzinski is having an MVP type season and Steve Carlton has already pitched 267 innings and isn't slowing down. The teams have three more games at the Polo Grounds but Philly has 7 games with the 35 win 1949 White Sox which bodes well. Both of these clubs could very well end up with over 100 wins. It just feels like the Giants are the team of destiny. National League West It is what everyone wanted in the NL West as the three mega stars of Mays/Aaron/Musial will battle it out into the final month. Musial has been an inspiration winning batter of the month and spearheading and 18 win month for the 1960 Cardinals who are in it to win it. The 1957 Giants have found a way to also keep pace as unlikely stars like Al Worthington and Marv Grissom are pitching this team into contention. The leaders remain the nervous Braves as Joe Adcock has heated up at the right time hitting .360 in August and the old guard of Lew Burdette and Warren Spahn have found their form and are ready to finish strong. It should be a lively and dramatic finish for the division win. |

Now the tasks get even more crucial as the 1927 New York Giants await who had quite the division race of their own but held off the 1964 Twins by two games. David Justice had a stellar season for Cleveland hitting .322 and driving in 108 runs. The offense was tops in batting but also leaned on their defense with Omar Vizquel and Shawon Dunston teaming for a good DP combination. Bartolo Colon and Dave Burba lead the Indians staff who had to battle through some tough losses from the bullpen but did enough. The 1927 Giants were lead by Rogers Hornsby who had a 27 game hitting streak but the real MVP like star was lefty George Harper who hit 49 home runs and drove in 119 runs. Eighteen game winner Burleigh Grimes lead the staff that was good with a 4.11 FIP. The Indians took 9 of 16 games in the head to head series this year. Jessen Barnes won 21 games and Pol Perritt had 49 saves in what was the best bullpen in the league. Heinie Zimmerman and Larry Doyle made a great duo in the middle of the New York order and lit up the Polo Grounds with over 225 RBI between them. The team ended first in the ML in home runs and could kill you in a number of ways. Most of all the confidence of this team all season showed as they head to the post season as the favorites. The party in St. Louis was unexpected as the Cards were in last place in the division as late as July. They stood their ground and are a testament of what a pennant race is all about lead by their star Stan Musial. Musial drove in 114 runs while Ken Boyer hit 31 home runs and drove in 108. Unfortunately Bob Gibson will miss the LCS with a bad shoulder but Ernie Broglio and Larry Jackson came through in a pinch when it mattered most. The matchup with the Giants seems lopsided, but the teams battled each other hard over 17 games this season with little to seperate them. One thing for sure, there is not quit in this club whatsoever. Attachment 1041002 Season 5 Batting Champion https://www.cooperstownexpert.com/wp...0059524974.jpg Ty Cobb (.370, 230 Hits) |

Post Season American League Championship Series A Determination To Win Carry New York Indians Frustrated At Hands Of Red Hot Giants https://www.fineartstorehouse.com/p/...50745.jpg.webp When the stakes are raised and the time comes to win championships, some teams just seem to have what it takes while others do not. The 1998 Indians came into the ALCS with as much talent as the 1927 Giants but it was clear that the New York team had that extra intangible that would allow them to smash their way to the pennant in five games. Names like Terry, Harper, Hornsby, Lindstrom, and especially Mel Ott demonstrated class and set the tone from the opening game in which they won 13-5. Ott would hit four home runs in the series and drive in 8 runs while Travis Jackson hit a cool .500 and Rogers Hornsby .435. Cleveland had no answers and surrendered the series in a 9-1 loss at home in game five. The Tribe did have their one moment in game three where they won 10-0 behind four home runs and Jared Wright. Kent Greenfield won two games for New York while Burleigh Grimes looked good in his game four win. Cleveland were anemic for four of the five games and need to wonder why they couldnt sustain any success even on their home field. National League Championship Series Cards Make Upset Look Easy St. Louis Stuns 107 Giants To Make World Series https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-b247...831843.jpg?c=2 Playing good baseball at the right time is exactly what the postseason is all about. Not caring about their opponents record and acclaims, the 1962 St. Louis Cardinals looked like a super team in their five game assault of the 1917 Giants. Ken Boyer was magnificent for the series winning MVP honors hitting three home runs and driving in eight. Even with Bob Gibson missing from the rotation the Cards saw Larry Jackson and Ernie Broglio win two games a piece in complete control of the Giants bats. New York looked like a different team misplaying balls and leaving pitches over the plate. They lost a tight one in game one but in game two Larry Jackson shut them out and the pressure seemed to mount as the series moved to Busch Stadium. There seemed to be some hope of life in a game three win but Broglio was excellent in game four and Jackson would come back to close things out. St. Louis that won only 84 games and was left for dead for most of the season, now carries the flag into the World Series and the biggest story of season 5 of the Excellance Project. |

Burleigh Grimes goes seven strong and the Giants open the World Series exactly how they wanted. Mel Nelson takes the loss. Game 2 - Ernie Broglio strikes out 15 Giants in a great effort but the Cardinals had to rally late with Bill White tying the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the ninth and finally pinch hitter Daryl Spencer drives in the winning run in the 10th with a sacrifice fly. A good fight by St. Louis to even the series. Game 3 - The Giants put four runs on the board in the first inning and would have a big day at the plate scoring 11 runs in the win. Rogers Hornsby drove in two and scored two as he kept hitting everything in this series. Ray Sadecki was a parade of poor St. Louis pitching allowing 4 runs without registering an out. The Polo Grounds enjoyed the day. Game 4 - Hornsby did it again slamming a three run home run in the third inning off Mel Nelson and the Giants would hold on for the one run win. Grimes was not as sharp as he was in the opener but Flay Thomas came on in relief to secure the win even as ole Stan Musial plated three runs hitting a long ball in the 4th. Game 5 - Kent Greenfield was given a lead and held on to it well for seven innings behind two RBI from Travis Jackson. The Cardinals facing elimination rallied in the 9th scoring three runs and with the tying run on second, Bill White struck out swinging and the New York celebration began with a deserved title.
