Detmers struck out Liover Pegiero, got Oneil Cruz to pop up to shallow RF, and struck out Henry Davis to end the threat and preserve the scoreless tie.

The Angels took the red eye to return home to face the Royals. The Halos got on the board first in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Westburg led off with a double and, after Neto was retired, Velazquez doubled high off the LF wall (missing a HR by inches) to make it 1-0. The Angels added to their lead when Trout doubled to lead of the bottom of the 6th and Westburg singled through a drawn in infield. Neto broke out of his slump with a single which sent Westburg to 3B and Velazquez followed with a sacrifice fly to deep RF to make it a 3-0 lead.

Christopher Sanchez navigated his way through 6 scoreless innings. Robert Stephenson relieved him. He pitched a scoreless 7th but the Royals got to him for a run in the 8th. Luis Garcia came on to record the final out of the inning and get out of a jam.

Robles doubled home 2 big insurance runs in the bottom of the 8th. Gonzalez singled later in the inning to score a run, and Trout followed with a RBI single to make it 7-1. Schanuel’s double to the RCF gap scored 2 more. Garcia stayed on to pitch the bottom of the 9th to record his 1st save.

TRADE
: The Angels completed a trade, sending Luis Rengifo and minor leaguer Matt Coutney to Pittsburgh in exchange for pitchers Luis Ortiz and Carmen Mlodzinski.

The two teams had been working on the deal for several days, but could not conclude it before the Angels left Pittsburgh.

Mlodzinski emerged as a high-leverage bullpen option for the Pirates in 2023, and the Angels expect him to strengthen their bullpen. Ortiz has an intriguing arm. He will report to AAA Salt Lake. The Angels optioned Jose Soriano to Salt Lake to make room for Mlodzinski on the active roster and recalled Ernie Clement to replace Rengifo.

Ernie Clement made his Angels debut, and Mike Trout made his first start in LF.

The Royals jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a Vinnie Pasquantino double, but when Salvador Perez followed with a single to RF, Hays threw a strike to the plate to throw out Pasquantino and end the inning.

The Halos took the lead in the bottom of the inning against Brady Singer. Edwards continued his hot hitting by leading off with a single to LF. After Hays walked, Trout doubled down the RF line to score both runners. Trout then scored on a Schanuel sacrifice fly.

The Royals got a run back on Freddy Fermin’s 2nd inning home run. The Angels answered with O’Hoppe’s bomb in the bottom of the inning. A single by Clement and a Robles double put runners at 2B and 3B, and Edwards hit a sacrifice fly to make it 5-2. Hays then singled to CF to score Robles. Trout singled, and an error by Hunter Renfroe allowed both runners to advance. Schanuel singled to score another run and Westburg walked to load the bases. Luis Cessna retired the next 2 batters to end the inning.

Back to back to back singles by Robles, Edwards, and Hays added another run in the 3rd.

The Royals scored twice in the top of the 4th and threatened to score more, but Clement made a sensational diving catch on a Massey line drive to end the inning.

Nick Mears pitched 2 scoreless innings, retiring all 6 batters he faced. The Royals scored a run off of Jose Suarez in the 7th.

TRADE
: After weeks of negotiations, the Angels traded Anthony Rendon to Atlanta in exchange for OF J. P. Martinez and INF/OF Eli White. The Angels will retain 100% of Rendon’s massive salary.

The Angels were considering giving Rendon his outright release, and gaining 2 players for him seemed to be a better option.

White is no longer a prospect and has a reputation as an excellent defender with plus speed who can play multiple positions wwll but not hit.

Martinez was once a top 100 prospect whose career has stagnated in the high minors (he played a few games for Texas in 2023). He has power and speed.

White was assigned to AAA Salt Lake and Martinez to AA Rocket City.

Connor Joe was recalled from AAA Evansville to take Rendon's place on the roster.

The Season at the Quarter Pole

The Angels are clearly in rebuild mode now and are staring youngsters at all 4 infield positions, catcher, and Velazquez in the OF. They also have acquired a core of young starters. There are few veteran trade chips left, mostly in the bullpen.

After a brutal start, the team has been playing better in the past couple of weeks. Time to sit back and let the young guys play and see what they can do. Some of them will be long term answers, and some will not develop the way we hope.

Nolan Schanuel has been impressive, and we really like what Jordan Westburg has been doing so far. Zach Neto shows promise but has been in a horrible slump. Logan O'Hoppe's slump has been even worse, although he was a force in the last series vs. the Royals.

Dairon Blanco went over the top of the wall to rob Trout of a 1st inning HR. The Halos took the lead in the bottom of the 3rd when Edwards hit an infield single and scored on Marlowe’s double. Marlowe hurt his knee while running the bases and had to leave the game.
