man...reading this....bringing back memories.
Steve Busby was one of my favorites, no-hitters in consecutive years....it looked like he could be an all-time great....then injury ruined his career... In fact...Fran Healy has stated more than once...Busby was the best pitcher he ever caught. Fun stuff here! |
That is exactly why I am doing it, I appreciate your feedback
Hope to keep you interested for some time |

milestone update
Joe Torre (BALT) picked up #2000
Al Kaline (PITT) got hit #3000 Dave McNally (BALT) picks up his 200th win, will he win 20 for the 7th year in a row? It looks like he will with 3 more to go Fergie Jenkins (TEX) throws a no hitter against Cleveland The Royals are awful. Brett, Bench and Cowens continue to hit the ball fairly well, but the pitching is brutal. Dennis Leonard seems to be on a roll, while all other starters toil. Steve Busby has been very hittable as his ERA nears 5. The bullpen has been pretty solid, however, they are rarely given leads to protect. With the rotation now being in a full fledged "youth" movement, the team is clearly looking to next year. Busby, Gura, Splittorff, Fitzmorris and Leonard along with Mike Torrez need to determine who wants to step up and help lead this team into the 2nd half of the decade. Leonard appears to be the frontrunner. |

man....that team has a serious power shortage
|
That is for certain, but, until FA kicks in I am not sure what else to do. I do not really have a strength from which to attempt to trade. The White Sox actually have 25 fewer HR than we do. I wonder if '74 was a particularly bad year for HR, that perhaps brought on a juiced ball.
Not that MLB has ever done that. |

HELP on NL MVP vote

|
I would choose Ryan because Morgan, Stargell, and Johnson didn't have any seasons that were SUPER special. Ryan was most valuable because he won 25 games.
|
I'll vote Cliff Johnson...that's a "Johnny Bench" season....great production from a catcher. Ryan can win the Cy Young...
|
So who won game 7, Wood vs Ellis?
|
Game 7
Well the finale was everything you could want, over 46,000 fans crammed their way into the Oakland-Alameda Coliseum.
Wilbur Wood and Dock Ellis were both up to the task going the distance Richie Zisk and Willie Stargell got the scoring started with a pair of homers to set the Pirates out to a 3-0 lead after 3 The bottom of the 4th started the activity for the A's Claudell Washington and Reggie Jackson each singled and were followed up by a walk to George Hendrick, loading the bases. Dock Ellis got Tommy McCraw to ground out bringing in 1 run. Ken Boswell then popped out to third. That brought up Tommy Helms with 2 down, he doubled into the lf gap tying the game at 3. Wood was in and out of trouble the rest of the way leaving 6 men on base over the next 3 innings. The game would remain tied into the bottom of the 7th inning, when Bert Campaneris singled and stole 2nd, he was later driven in by a 2 out single by Claudell Washington, who was later thrown out attempting to steal 2nd, leaving a very disgruntled Reggie Jackson in the batters box. Heading to the 8th Oakland 4 Pittsburgh 3 The Pirates went in order in the 8th, and the A's mini rally was ended when Tommy McCraw was thrown out at the plate by RF Roberto Clemente. The 9th began with 2 up and 2 down for the buccos, when Miguel Dilone reached on an error and was then singled over to 2nd by Dave Cash. This brought Richie Zisk to the plate and Wood got a routine grounder to second to end the game, and the series. Game 7 Oakland 4 Pittsburgh 3 1974 World Series Oakland 4 Pittsburgh 3 League MVP goes to Wilbur Wood who won 2 games, including the game 7 complete game victory. The Oakland Athletics have now won 2 consecutive World Championships and 3 straight AL West titles The Athletics are managed by Lum Harris, Harris who won a division with the Braves in '69 has now won 4 division titles and 2 World Championships, certainly off to a stellar career as a manager. |

Dave McNally (BALT) was injured, missing his final 3 starts. He finished 19-14, falling just short of his 7th straight 20 win season
The first BIG trade of the offseason Oakland sends CF George Hendrick to Cincy for 3B Richie Hebner The Royals must now face their one time MVP candidate regularly, but, that Bench guy is pretty good as well Jim Kaat (MINN) has suffered a fall from his roof, and is in critical condition in a Minneapolis hospital. His playing career is the least of their concerns at this point. Here is a look at the '74 Royals, Brett missed the final week leaving him in pursuit of another 200 hit season, he also fell short of the 50 double plateau with 48 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...1&d=1341412098 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...1&d=1341412100 |

Offseason news
The Royals made a move today in hopes of shoring up their 1B problem for the near future.
The Angels were showing some interest in the teams all time save leader, Monty Montgomery. They were offering up Lee May. However, once the GM had committed to moving Montgomery, we shopped him around a bit. Enter the Red Sox, who had an aging Yaz and a very impressive young OF. With Reggie Smith, Fred Lynn, Jim Rice and Dwight Evans fighting for AB's Talks went back and forth for quite some time before a deal came forth. The deal has KC sending Monty Montgomery (CL), Felix Millan (2b), Rodney Scott (2b)-rookie and Joe Keough (LF) throw in, (who was subsequently dealt to Atlanta for Max Leon (MR)) The Red Sox parted with Cecil Cooper (1b) The teams tried to add to the players and include a ss for KC but were unable to agree. It appears as though the Royals will give rookie Jamie Quirk the opportunity to win that position out of spring training. Jim Kaat (MINN) has been released from the hospital with no time-table for his return to the field. Just prior to opening day the Royals were dealt the news that Amos Otis would be lost for 5 months with a concussion, they were forced to act quickly. They did not have a competent player in the minors to start the season in CF. They then struck a deal with the Twins, normally trading within the division is against GM Lasher's wishes. However, this was a desperate situation, especially when you consider the amount of time Otis has missed over the past few season The Twins found themselves in a bit of a financial crunch and were in need of some cash and an arm in the pen, the Royals sent Jim York (MR) and Bob Oliver (1b) along with a player to be named later and $75k in cash in exchange for rookie Lyman Bostock (CF). Bostock will be reporting to LA in the morning as the boys in blue will open the season against the Angels The Angels have sent young 1b Bruce Bochte to the Mets in exchange for ss Bud Harrelson 20 game winner rundown 15 20 game winners 8 1st timers 6 2nd timers including 3 back to back, Gaylord Perry (SF), Ron Reed (ATL) and Jon Matlack (NYN) 1 4th timer Fergie Jenkins (TEX) Nolan Ryan (NYN) won the pitching triple crown and Wilbur Wood (OAK) won an incredible 29 games |

Better power so far too...Bench is helping there. |
Yeah, all are performing better this year so-far. It will be interesting to see if Busby and Bostock perform long term. Also, going to be interesting to see how FA affects the league.
Thanks for checking in on the blog, I appreciate the input. |
Royals claim Lerrin LaGrow off of waivers from the Braves, designate Chris Zachary for assignment.
Royals are also the hottest team in the game, having won 8 in a row over the top teams in the AL. Larry Gura has now won 9 games while Busby continues to heat up as well. The strong start combined with solid timely hitting has the team within 4 games of the A's |

Willie Stargell (PITT) hit HR #300
In a couple of surprising trade deadline deals: Minnesota dealt Chris Chambliss to Atlanta for SP George Stone and the Dodgers dealt Ron Cey to Milwaukee for Jim Slaton. I find it interesting how Chambliss, who has put up good numbers, is now on his 4th team in 3 seasons. At least he is on a team that he actually did play for in real life. Which I cannot say about Ron Cey, this move will probably play out much like Bando in Milwaukee, it does make a pretty strong left side along with Yount. However, when Molitor comes around things could get interesting. The Royals were quiet at the trade deadline, they attempted on several occasions to move pitchers, Al Fitzmorris and Carl Morton. Both of which have decent upsides but no room in our current rotation. A rotation that is plugging along quite nicely, the Royals have won 7 in a row and 9 of their last 11. Many of those games have been of the CG variety. They have welcomed back Amos Otis and Tom Poquette from the DL and the offense seems to be clicking on all cylinders. Now for a look at the best of the month that was: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...1&d=1342269438 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...1&d=1342269438 http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...1&d=1342269438 |

Drago and Bird strong out of the pen.
I always liked Dick Drago...always felt he was under-appreciated... |
Royals actually pushed their winning streak out to 14 before splitting their last 6 games. They have pushed their lead out to 4.5 over the Angels
Bird has been very solid and Drago is definitely settling into the setup role. I was thinking of trying to move him since he was no longer a starter, but may hold onto him for awhile now. btw, will be heading to Chicago for a week, therefore, there will be a lull in updates Will be at Wrigley on Tuesday night as they host the fish |

Yeah not so good, his ab's will be reduced by Poquette and Bostock and Otis all being healthy, however, he is a pretty good bet on the basepaths. When he gets there. Should be interesting to see if the Royals can hang on, the A's will be tough as will the Angels. Need to capitalize on the big season from Poquette and Quirk has been a help at SS as has Alley
