VIPERS, WOLVES STAY ALIVE IN IPA PLAYOFFS
In the first round of the Islandian Pro Alliance playoffs, the defending champion Rolling Hills Racers and the St. John Crusaders couldn't sweep the Midway Wolves and the Valmara Vipers... both clubs stayed alive in the postseason... the Wolves trimmed the Racers 3-1 and the Vipers nudged the Crusaders 2-1... but both Midway and Valmara are just hanging on by their fingertips... both trail three games to one in the best-of-seven Division Championship Series.

The other two series are also just about wrapped up, too... Volusia took care of Wynnamac 7-1 and Oxford tamed Turon 4-3 in game four of the series... the Vigilantes and Red Caps are in front three games to one.

ROLLING HILLS, ST. JOHN ADVANCE IN PLAYOFFS
In the Tycobbian Union first round, the defending IPA champion Rolling Hills rolled over the Midway Wolves in just five games... and the St. John Crusaders bashed the Valmara Vipers four games to one in the Ruthlandian Union... both clubs will now advanced to round two, the League Championship Series... Rolling Hills will meet the winner of the Oxford-Turon series and St. John will tangle with the Volusia-Wynnamac series winner... the Red Caps and Vigilantes have 3-2 leads in those best-of-seven affairs.

In the Tycobbian Union Division Championship Series Rolling Hills slammed Midway 10-6 to take the series and send the Wolves home for the winter... Turon stayed alive with a tense 6-5 decision over the favored Red Caps.

In the Ruthlandian Union St. John eliminated the Valmara Vipers by shutting them out 7-0 in game five... in the other contest it was Wynnamac whipping Volusia 4-1 to cut the gap to three games to two in their series.

OXFORD, VOLUSIA ADVANCE TO LEAGUE FINALS
Highly-ranked Oxford and underrated Volusia have taken giant steps toward the IPA Pro Cup trophy... the 3rd-ranked Red Caps finished off the 8th-rated Turon Typhoons in six games... and the 7th-ranked Volusia Vigilantes upset 2nd-ranked Wynnamac also in six games.

Both clubs will advance to the IPA League Championship Series... In the Tycobbian Union, Oxford will have to get by the current champion of the IPA and this year's Pro Cup favorite, the Rolling Hills Racers... the Racers eliminated 4th-ranked Midway in just five games... in the Ruthlandian Union, Volusia will be challenged by 6th-rated St. John... the Crusaders got the best of the 5th-ranked Valmara Vipers in a five-game series.

IPA PRO CUP SEMI-FINALS
The time has come... the Round of Four... all across the Islands baseball fans are addressing the prime issue at hand... there are four teams left in the running for the cherished IPA Pro Cup, which is presented to the team that survives postseason pressures and three rounds of intense baseball competition... the time is here for the Ruthlandian Union and Tycobbian Union League Championship Series... the winner of the Ruthlandian Union and the winner of the Tycobbian Union will meet in the Islandian Pro Alliance Pro Cup Series for the baseball championship of Islandia.

The challengers are the St. John Crusaders and the Volusia Vigilantes representing the Ruthlandian Union... the contenders representing the Tycobbian Union are the Oxford Red Caps and the Rolling Hills Racers... the Crusaders will open up in Volusia at the Jailhouse tomorrow afternoon in the first game of the series... and the Red Caps will be playing in Rolling Hills at Winchester Park taking on the defending Pro Cup champion Rolling Hills... Volusia and Rolling Hills will have the homefield advantage in the best-of-seven series... three of the clubs were in the playoffs a year ago and will get another chance at the Islandian crown... Rolling Hills has captured four Pro Cup trophies in its history... they are the odds-on favorite to make it an unprecedented five... Volusia has one... Oxford has one, too... St. John is seeking its first Pro Cup... in last year's postseason playoffs St. John and Oxford lost in the opening round... the Ranford Bulls defeated the Crusaders in five games and the Ginza Ninjas whipped the Red Caps in a hard-fought seven-game series.

Ruthlandian Union League Championship Series
Volusia really looked good knocking off a very good Wynnamac club in six games... St. John took care of a good Valmara team in just five games... and who will prevail in the RU title series?... it's tough one to call... the Crusaders and Vigilantes are fairly evenly matched... the St. John pitchers Mark Faber (15-7, 3.17 ERA), Teddy Howell (13-7, 3.16 ERA) and Teddy de Grom (12-7, 3.56 ERA) shut down a very good-hitting Valmara squad and more than matched the Vipers at the plate with the likes of Matt Sliverman (.331 BA, 22 HR, 69 RBI), Mark Warner (.289 BA/25 HR, 82 RBI), Ozwaldo Romero (.295 BA, 31 HR, 110 RBI) and Freddy Woodruff (.303 BA, 12 HR, 73 RBI)... the Crusaders are a very impressive team... good solid pitching with a 3.50 team ERA (2nd), good solid hitting with a .283 BA (3rd), good scoring with 803 runs (4th), good power with 163 roundtrippers (7th) and very good defense (.978 FA).

But the Vigilantes are solid, too... they put it to the strong Wynnamac Sundowners... the Macs were rated the second-best team in the Pro Cup playoffs this year... Volusia hit their vaunted pitching staff hard... but the V's don't hit homers like the other Pro Cup challengers... and their pitching might be a little suspect... Volusia does hit very well with a .287 BA (2nd), scores pretty well with 740 runs (12th), but lacks home-run power...the V's only hit 95 out of the park (30th)…the top bats are Bandy Barnwell (.344 BA, 6 HR, 58 RBI), Ellie Hudgins (.334 BA, 15 HR, 79 RBI) and Carlos Silva (.348 BA, 8 HR, 69 RBI)… the team ERA is 3.74 (13th)… Lonny Rinehart I(18-7, 3.62 ERA), Tomaz Meza (16-4, 3.04 ERA), Reynaldo Medrano (14-7, 3.32 ERA) and Gerry Moyer (11-7, 3.54) are quality starters... not a lot in the bullpen... but veteran Dan Hunt (17-12, 3.70 ERA, 17 saves) and Ron Beeman (7-3, 3.33 ERA, 12 saves) are dependable relievers... Hunt is also fairly good starter.
Ruthlandian LCS Outlook: St. John in six games... better pitching will decide this series... starters Mark Faber, Teddy Howell and Teddy de Grom will be the difference makers... more home-run firepower could be a factor, too.

Tycobbian Union League Championship Series
Can anybody beat the rampaging Rolling Hills Racers this year?.. they couldn't do it last year... and they are even better this year with the terrific rookie first baseman Mark Carmickle (.304 BA, 24 HR, 38 doubles, 8 triples, 109 RBI, 91 R)... in the first round the Racers handled a very good Midway team pretty easily, eliminating them in five games... Oxford defeated Turon the lowest-rated team in the playoffs in six games... the Typhoons only had two good starters and little else.

Rolling Hills had the best offense in the IPA... they have hitters galore in the lineup... 7 players batted .300.. 3 players drove in 100 runs: Mulbert (.341 BA), Brandini (.311 BA), Teddy Stonich (.320 BA, 34 HR, 129 RBI), Jean-Luc Roubique (.333 BA, 33 HR, 122 RBI), Mark Carmickle (.304 BA, 24 HR, 109 RBI), Gil Arthur (.319 BA) and Emile Robicheaux (.318 BA)... they hit an out-of-sight .300 (1st) as a team... scored 894 runs (1st) and hit 153 out of the park (11th-tied)... with excellent fielding (.979 FA)... however, they are not the perfect team... the starters are just fair... no real stoppers in the rotation... veterans Vance Dillaway (18-6, 3.85 ERA), Tommy Otis (7-6, 3.81 ERA), Audie Stafford (11-9, 4.07 ERA) and Bob Corcorane (12-10, 4.61) are the probable rotation... there's a chance P. J. Dunham (7-1, 2.40 ERA) might be in the rotation mix, too... the bullpen is headed up by Rob Gates (13-6, 3.80 ERA, 17 saves) and Donny Joe Nelson (12-7, 3.58 ERA, 5 saves).

So how can the Oxford Red Caps compete with such a powerhouse?... well, the Red Caps can hit pretty well with a .269 BA (14th), scored 753 runs (9th)... can really go deep with 216 HR (2nd)... they have perhaps the best starting foursome in the IPA with Pat McFarlane (20-7, 2.27 ERA), Rico Alessi (15-7, 3.25 ERA), Maury Statler (19-7, 2.78 ERA) and Tony Eaton (17-8, 2.34 ERA)... plus a reliable bullpen... defense is just average (.975 FA)... but on closer look, Oxford depends too much on two superstuds for offense: Buddy Blackford (.307 BA, 47 HR, 128 RBI) and Showboat Lynn (.283 BA, 46 HR, 116 RBI)... they will have to have a super series to upset the Racers... or get plenty of help from others in the batting order like Roland Latimer (.258 BA, 28 HR, 57 RBI), Scott Schneider (.271 BA, 13 HR, 65 RBI) and Raylan Theodore (.276 BA, 16 HR, 64 RBI).
Outlook: in the playoffs last year, the Ginza Ninjas edged Oxford in seven games... Ginza then gave Rolling Hills its toughest series... the Karate Kids pushed them to seven games before losing out... so the Red Caps could be trouble for the Racers... might be able to take them to seven games... but Rolling Hills will win... the Racers are a dynamite ballclub.
