Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kowalski 21 August 2297 - BL: Caliman Throws 2-0 Shutout, Forces Play-in Easy Town Assaultrons pitcher Smoker Caliman did his job to perfection today, blanking the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys at Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium. He scattered 5 hits while striking out 7 in the 2-0 shutout. "All I did was not allow any runs," he joked after the game. "I mean, technically, that's what they pay me to do, right?" This year Caliman has a 9-5 mark in 20 starts with a 4.66 ERA. He has given up 143 hits in 127.1 innings, struck out 97 and issued 33 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .278 batting average against him. With the Assaultrons' win, the two teams will face off one more time again tomorrow in Slocum's Joe Seaside Stadium. The winner of that game represents the Brotherhood League as the wildcard team. Other Scores: County Crossing 1 at Finch Farm 7 Finch Farm beat County Crossing on the strength of starter Josh Dude's fine effort. The right-hander led his team to a win, 7-1. In 9 innings, Dude surrendered 9 hits, while striking out 6 and walking 0. He allowed 1 run. Finch Farm goes to 28-32, County Crossing to 27-33. Peter Tatoeater, the Finch Farm third baseman, contributed a 2-run single in the bottom of the first inning to make the score 2-0, Four Leafs. For the game, Tatoeater went 2 for 3 with 2 singles and a walk, while adding 2 RBI. Salem 5 at The Slog 4 Boots Yellowhair did all he could to help his team win. In the end, though, it wasn't enough to keep the The Slog Ghouls from losing, 5-4, to the Salem Witch Hats at Tarberry Field Forever. Yellowhair was 2 for 5 with a home run. He drove in 4 runs and scored once. Dan Beantown converted his 13th save in 15 tries. The winning streak has now reached 4 games for the Witch Hats. Chris Treestump, the 19-year old right fielder , had a direct impact on the outcome. Treestump contributed a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning to put Salem up, 5-4. 21 August 2297 - DHPL: General Atomics Galleria Wins Dark Hollow Pond Series! With a 9-8 win over the Greentop Nursery Night People at General Atomics Galleria Park today, the General Atomics Galleria Robotics Experts wrapped up their 1st title in team history. The Robotics Experts left little doubt who was the better team. Celebrating a banner year, "team" was the word of the day in the victorious clubhouse after the game. "Hitting, pitching, fielding; those are all things you need to win, but most importantly you need a team, a team that works together toward the same collective goal," said General Atomics Galleria manager Alfredo Barios. "Our players felt that way all year, and they played that way. When one guy had an off day, 24 others stepped up their game and filled the void." A jovial mood filled the air as General Atomics Galleria celebrated into the night. The city's mayor said parade plans were underway and a "huge celebration" would be in order. "I hope they have a big celebration," Greentop Nursery manager Jimmy Combat said. "They deserved to win this series and they deserve to celebrate it." 21 August 2297 - IL: Synths Top Chemists, 10-6 The performance of Greg Macn proved critical in helping Lexington beat Sunshine Tidings, 10-6. The Synths second baseman was 4 for 5 with a home run and 3 singles, while scoring 2 runs. Doug Dee El earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed 1 run on 4 hits in 2 innings. His record is now 2-0. The win gives Lexington a season record of 36-24. Swat Diamond, who finished 3rd in the IL in home runs with 13 last year, contributed to the Lexington win with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, the first baseman had 2 hits in 5 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 2 runs scored, and 2 runs batted in. "One win at a time, one game at a time. We try not to get too far ahead of ourselves," Macn told WRVR. Based on the results of the first game of the day, the Chemists are remaining home for the playoffs. Other Scores: Fort Hagen 6 at Concord 1 The Fort Hagen Silver Shroud beat the Concord Radstags, 6-1, at Nuka Park. Starting pitcher Oscar Chekhemani was a big reason why. He held his opponent in check all game. Fort Hagen has now won 4 straight. Fort Hagen relied on the hitting of Seth Dungan to pick up the win. The shortstop clubbed a run-scoring single in the top of the second inning to put the Silver Shroud on top, 2-1. For the game, Dungan had 1 home run and 1 single in 5 at-bats. The Silver Shroud now await the results of tonight's Lexington-Sunshine Tidings game. If the Chemists win, the two teams will face off in a play-in game tomorrow. If the Synths win, the Shroud will represent the Institute League as the playoff team. 21 August 2297 - CL: Cambridge League Championship to College Square The College Square Nerd Ragers pulled out all the stops tonight, winning the Cambridge League Championship in a hard-fought series with the Bunker Hill Gun Fu. It was a seesaw affair, but with a 9-4 victory at Nuka Cola Square, College Square lay claim to the franchise's 1st championship. "There's no denying we faced a tough opponent," said Jason Love. "But as the old saying goes, 'when the going gets tough, the tough get going,' and that's what we did today." The champs finished the regular season 27-23 and claimed second place in the Cambridge League. A victory parade is set to be schedule in College Square in the days to come. Phil Cecil was set to start the game after suffering a dog bite earlier in the week. Unfortunately, he was experiencing pain when throwing and was a late scratch. Still, his teammates came through in his stead. 21 August 2297 - ML: Gunners Shock Warwick, Earn Wildcard The Quincy Gunners topped the Warwick Mirelurks, 4-3, in Minutemen League action at The Homestead. The game was highlighted by the performance of Quincy pitcher Ray Human. Human got the win, improving to 10-4. He allowed 7 hits and walked 1 over 8 innings. Human allowed 2 runs. Goodneighbor used the clutch hitting of Zachary Utsinger to capture the win. The left fielder drilled a 2-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to put the Hancocks ahead, 7-5. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a big one. 21 August 2297 - DBL: Cabot House Rayguns Win Downtown Boston Series in Extra Inning A celebratory mood filled the air as the Cabot House Rayguns closed out the season with a 4-1 victory over the Trinity Plaza Snipers in 10 innings at Memory Den Field to capture the Downtown Boston Series, 2-1. Giving the Snipers credit for a hard-fought series, Rayguns players said they believed throughout the postseason that their "destiny" was to be crowned Downtown Boston League champions. "We felt like this was our year all season long," said second baseman Tony Sanchez, who was named series MVP. "It was our destiny to win it and we did." It was the 1st in franchise history. During the Downtown Boston League regular season Cabot House put up a 37-13 record and finished first. "They're the champions and they deserve it," said a dejected Trinity Plaza manager Bill Pinkerton. "We played good ball, they just played better than us." 21 August 2297 - RL: Mustang Lifts Dwellers to Win The Vault 81 Dwellers and starting pitcher Josh Mustang stifled the Fairline Hill Estates offense en route to a comfortable 10-1 win at CURIE Inc. Field. Vault 81 is now 29-31. Mustang scattered 4 hits over 9 innings for the Dwellers. With the win, Mustang goes to 8-7 on the year with 87 strikeouts. "In baseball, you have your ups and downs," said Fairline Hill Estates manager David Meatcook. "You just try to stay level-headed the whole time." Other Scores: Oberland 4 at Diamond City 8 Good production from first baseman Jeffrey Curatolo helped the Diamond City Swatters topple the Oberland T-51s, 8-4. Curatolo had a big at-bat with runners on 1st and 3rd in the bottom of the third inning, when he hit a 3-run home run. The Swatters went on to win. Egret 5 at Shaw 9 The Shaw HS Knuckle Punchers picked up a win at Atomatoys Stadium at Roxbury, taking down the Egret Scrappers, 9-5. Starting pitcher Kyle Clevinger was a big reason why. The victory gives Shaw HS a record of 30-30. Matt Ratican hit a 2-run double off Ronnie Gipper in the bottom of the second, which put the Knuckle Punchers in front, 5-3. In addition to the double, Ratican had 1 single and 1 walk, while going 2 for 4. 21 August 2297 - Playoffs Mostly Set Except for the Brotherhood League result to be decided tomorrow, the rest of the 2297 CBO playoffs are now set. Here are the matchups: #8 Fort Hagen (IL) at #1 Oberland (RL) #7 Fairline Hill Estates (RL) at #2 Goodneighbor (ML) #6 Brotherhood League Wildcard at #3 Lexington (IL) #5 Quincy (ML) at #4 The Slog (BL) 21 August 2297 - Draft Order There is still some juggling in the order, but here is the 2297 draft order as we know it. The 2nd and 3rd place slots are still to be determined in the Brotherhood League. Here are the top 10 picks: 1. Diamond City 2. Jamaica Plain 3. County Crossing 4. Concord 5. Atom 6. Egret 7. Finch Farm 8. Abernathy 9. Starlight 10. University Point |
I hope Diamond City can put that draft slot to good use. As I've said, it's a shame a team that should have such prestige is languishing at the bottom of the pack. I'm surprised there's not fan protests. I mean, even if Moe just made some trades using a dart board, surely he'd get some better performance out of the team.

The playoffs somehow got scheduled without this game being scheduled, which I assumed was automatic since the playoffs call for a wildcard team.
You know what, I am tired of the association. I was planning to get through 2298 and maybe 2299 with the association still intact, but I am tired of fixing things now, so I am just going to go ahead and fuse the leagues all into one giant league. Other than the unique league logos and such, I suppose there is no reason to keep the association when it causes me more trouble than the vanilla league setup. With that said, after realizing that the play-in game was not scheduled, I had to dissolve and rebuild the association because the playoffs were scheduled without the actual second place Brotherhood League team being known. I just scheduled that for Monday instead of Sunday and I may have to reseed the playoffs based on OOTP's rules rather than mine. |

Yes, Oberland definitely looks like the team to beat but, as StLee says, they did last year, also, and didn't make it out of the first round.
I'm just hoping the Party boys have hit their stride at the right time, because there are no easy match-ups from this point. |
