Season 6
April Attachment 1044053 Awards Batter of the month AL: Dave Kingman (1979 Cubs) Batter of the month NL - Whitey Kurowski (1946 Cardinals) Pitcher of the month AL - Alex Wood (2016 Dodgers) Pitcher of the month NL - Deacon Phillipe (1906 Pirates) Injuries Cliff Chambers (1948 Cubs) - Quad (3 weeks) Charlie Case (1906 Pirates) - Groin (4-5 weeks) American League East 1985 St. Louis Cardinals - Whitey Herzog and the Cardinals have started their position well enough at the top of the division. Jack Clark is the power in the lineup having driven in 28 runs while the club of course leads the league in steals. Joaquin Andujar ended the month well with three straight wins and his performances bode very well for St. Louis. 1930 Pittsburgh Pirates - The Bucs have made the fewest errors in the league to help their pitching. They have real belief they can win this division and ace Larry French adds to that belief with a 5-1 record and 2.41 ERA in April. Paul Waner is mashing at .373. 1960 Chicago Cubs - Ron Santo and Billy Williams have proved vital as the two young sluggers have allowed the Cubs to stay close. Cub pitching however has been ugly, the biggest evidence being the 0-6 record Bob Anderson has with an ERA over 6. Why is he still in the rotation? Ernie Banks has 9 home runs. 1974 Boston Red Sox - A difficult start for Boston who only won 9 games. Fred Lynn has been hot but the Sox batters have struggled with Carlton Fisk hitting .202 and the team last in runs. The 5.48 ERA for Boston starters has also been hard to watch, the Sox better have a good May planned or it will be a long hard season. American League West 2016 Los Angeles Dodgers - Tops in OPS and not lacking in confidence, the Dodgers are playing well to start. In a suprise, Clayton Kershaw has been roughed up a bit but Alex Wood has been brilliant going 5-0 and winning pitcher of the month. Yasiel Puig is hitting .350 and is now performing as a lead off man. 1979 Chicago Cubs - Dave Kingman won batter of the month honors with 13 home runs and some of the tape measure variety. Bill Buckner is hitting .343 but beyond the two starts Chicago cant do much as a team .244 average shows. Bruce Sutter has also been a bit erratic as closer with a 5.00 ERA. Chicago will need to be better. 1994 San Diego Padres - Can Tony Gwynn hit .400? Well he ends April at .387 so stay tuned. The Padres have been running alot and manufacturing runs while Joey Hamilton has been their best starter winning 4 games despite an abdominal injury. Trevor Hoffman has a 4.75 ERA in another example of a good closer struggling. 1988 Detroit Tigers - The Tigers are expected to compete in this division but havent showed it yet. Alan Trammell hitting .320 and fielding like gold has been dependable. The Tiger pitching however has been in the dumps as Jack Morris has a 6.81 ERA in 6 starts and Doyle Alexander has been just as bad with a 10 ERA in his last two starts. National League East 1910 Boston Red Sox - An impressive start in Boston. Tris Speaker and Smoky Joe Wood have had very good opening months as the Sox won 8 of 11 at home. Team FIP leads the league and Boston has stole 58 bases already and are on a manic pace. Boston has played the perfect dead ball style and could really be poised for a big season. 1946 St. Louis Cardinals - Whitey Kurowski won batter of the month honors and leads in almost all offensive categories The clun is first in runs and the offense is scary as Stan Musial is hitting .379. The pitching needs to be better as it appears the Red Sox arnt going anywhere in this division. Its tough to be favorties. 2002 Chicago Cubs - The duo of Kerry Wood and Mark Prior have not lived up to their potential in the first month as Cubs pitching in general has been poor. The offense however has hit with everyone in the first month, Moises Alou leads with a .423 average and Sammy Sosa has a .983 OPS. Can the Cubs hang in the division? 1909 Philadelphia Phillies - It appears the Phils will have an uphill battle but the team did sweep the 1960 Cubs to end the month and provide some optimism. The team does not get on base but Earl Moore and George McQuillan have pitched well. Of course there is no bullpen to speak and many fear they are one of those clubs that could be overmatched. National League West 1906 Pittsburgh Pirates - The Pirates lead the NL in most all offensive categories and are doing quite well to set the tone of thee type of baseball this season will showcase. Deacon Phillipe is 5-1 and was dominant winning pitcher of the month honors while the great Honus Wagner has 15 RBI and hit .364 in what appears to be his prime. The team did lose outfielder Charlie Case for a couple of months but the feeling is by manager Fred Clarke that this team will stay the course. 1985 Detroit Tigers - Lou Whitaker finished the month on fire with 4 HR and 11 RBI in his last 10 games; seems the second baseman has alot to prove. Kirk Gibson has drove in 19 and is hitting .382 and remains the heart of the club. The pitching seems to be up and down as Juan Berenguer has struggled but Jack Morris has been good. Sparky Anderson is still looking for a dependable closer and Willie Hernandez has not had a defined role. 1948 Chicago Cubs - Chicago tries to do all the little things to win but the lack of offense and power makes it tough to win at Wrigley Field. Andy Pafko is making a name for himself in the middle of the order and is a fan favorite but Bill Nicholson is past his prime and Phil Cavaretta has been forced to be a leadoff man. Hank Borowy has been killed as the team closer and the starting rotation is being pushed to close out games as much as possible. 1921 Cincinnati Reds - Only 95 runs for the Reds and 8 home runs has made scoring runs a chore. The Reds are lead by Ed Roush who hit .354 in April but it is becoming apparent that this team will need exceptional pitching to compete. Dolph Luque and Eppa Rixey have been good as the top two but the remainder of the rotation has been bad. The Reds may find themselves in a fight with the Cubs for last place in the division as winning it likely is out of the cards. |

Season 6
May Attachment 1045018 Awards Batter of the month AL: Dwight Evans (1974 Red Sox) Batter of the month NL - Honus Wagner (1906 Pirates) Pitcher of the month AL - Scott Sanders (1994 Padres) Pitcher of the month NL - Charlie Smith (1910 Red Sox) Injuries Smoky Joe Wood (1910 Red Sox) - Elbow (4-5 weeks) Dave Geisel (1979 Cubs) - Hamstring (7 weeks) American League East 1985 St. Louis Cardinals - Not running away with anything yet, the 1985 Cardinals are holding on to the lead in the division. Willie McGee is having a great start hitting .374 and John Tudor has already logged over 100 innings on the young year. Ken Dayley has 11 saves with a 0.98 ERA as the Cards as expected play in a lot of low scoring close games. 1960 Chicago Cubs - Ron Santo finished the month on a 3-23 slide but Ernie Banks has driven in 40 runs with 15 homers and the offense has continued to out perform. Dick Elsworth has been a true ace but behind him the rest of the rotation falls off a cliff. The Cubs overall are playing much better ball then anyone expected them too, we will see if it can last into the summer. 1930 Pittsburgh Pirates - Some feel that this is the team that can put together a run to challenge St. Louis. The team just hasn't hit as of yet last in almost all categories including a .625 OPS. Lefty Larry French has picked up his game with 7 wins and a 2.50 ERA but the arms have had to log stressful innings as any runs scored on them could mean a loss. Pie Traynor needs to be especially better batting only .220. 1974 Boston Red Sox - After a horrid April, Boston had a better month and seems to be having some confidence return only 8.5 games back. Dwight Evans was batter of the month while Carl Yastrzemski is hitting .330. The offense is doing ok but the starting pitching has been in a funk all season long with the team ERA of 5.10 and confidence lacking greatly. American League West 2016 Los Angeles Dodgers - The Dodgers came to earth a bit in May and made it a conceivable race again in the division. Dodger bats remain on fire as five of their players have eclipsed the 30 RBI value already. Joc Peterson has hammered 12 home runs and the club has a ,781 OPS. Alex Wood is 8-1 with a 2.99 ERA but Clayton Kershaw and the rest of the Dodger rotation has not been up to par. Kershaw is average with a 3.85 and some real trouble getting out of jams. Still Dave Roberts shouldn't be particularly nervous even as rumors of a rocky clubhouse begin to emerge. 1994 San Diego Padres - Beyond Tony Gwynn hitting .393 and having all the attention on him league wide, San Diego has played some good baseball and is only 3.5 games back of the lead. Padre starters have the best ERA in the AL at 3.47 as Scott Sanders and Joey Hamilton have but together two solid months each. Trevor Hoffman is doing his thing in what has been a bevy of close games as the team offense seems to be banking on timely hitting instead of the big inning. 1988 Detroit Tigers - Detroit has struggled in one run games and other then Mike Henneman, the rest of the pen has been a task for manager Sparky Anderson. Jack Morris has an ERA of 5.65 making everyone wonder where his season is heading. On offense Allen Trammell and Lou Whitaker continue to do their thing combining for 19 home runs and 85 RBI. This Tiger team really should be better, and to tje press the manager seems confident enough that things will turn around. 1979 Chicago Cubs - Dave Kingman continues to have the bleacher bums attention with his 19 home runs and almost 50 RBI. Kingman should be a site at the HR derby this summer. Overall of course this Cubs team isnt doing enough especially away from home where they have won only 12 games. Getting on base and playing solid defense is hurting this team. even as the pitching has been better then expected especially in their bullpen. National League East 1910 Boston Red Sox - Boston has continued to pace the NL East with another big month. The month however did cost them significantly as ace Smoky Joe Wood was lost to injury for at a minimum 5 weeks. Wood was the anchor to a rotation that has been good, but now will be stretched. Tris Speaker could be the best all around player this season has seen and his teaming with Duffy Lewis has been fun to watch including both of them combining for 24 home runs. Boston has stole 108 bases and is an aggressive team that wont let a pitcher rest. They seemed starved to win this division. 2002 Chicago Cubs - Leading with 72 home runs and alot of optimism, this Cubs team is still in the middle of the race. Mark Prior has struck out 104 batters and Kerry Wood has won 7 games as the dynamic duo has stayed healthy and thrown well. Sammy Sosa has hit .330 with 12 home runs and looks happy on the field. Corey Patterson has been a nice spark as the leadoff man and speedy centerfield man. The Cubs pen has been an issue, Tom Gordon has faltered and it seems Joe Borowski will soon play the closer role. Chicago talent and this group should not be overlooked. 1946 St. Louis Cardinals - Languishing at .500, this great Cardinal club has been a mystery and a good couple of months has turned into a must. The offense has been consistent all season as expected as few teams generate as many runs as these birds. Enos Slaughter and Stan Musial are as good as advertised but it remains Whitey Kurowski who is having an MVP like season. St. Louis pitching has been in a funk as Harry Brecheen and Howie Pollett have not produced leaving Max Lanier as the only dependable option. Will pitching do in this legendary club? The summer months will tell us alot in a division that still has alot to show us. 1909 Philadelphia Phillies - Likely the most overlooked club this season the Phils lack the big stars and come right out of the deadball era. Still the Fighting Phils have competed and are just 7 game under for a club that was expected to be lousy. Kitty Bransfield and Mickey Doolin are making names for themselves with good starts to the year while Sherry Magee with hitting .325 and will likely be an all star. This is also the best baserunning team in the NL. The pitching will likely have the final say for this team, as the quality just isn't there and any consistency could be a really tall order. National League West 1906 Pittsburgh Pirates - Here come Honus Wagner who has tore the league up after a slow April. Wagner hit .522 in his last 10 games and now is sitting on 40 RBI after two months. Of course this club is more then just their star, Ginger Beaumont is a proven bat and manager Fred Clarke leads the team in runs and steals while hititng .303 at the top of the order. Deacon Phillipe and the Pirates rotation has been average, but a league that seems to lack pitching could work in favor of the Pirates. More work to be done for the Bucs, but their great star has awakened. 1921 Cincinnati Reds - A winning month and only 4.5 games back, things could be alot worse for these Reds. The club has won 15 one run games and seem to find their best self in the late innings. Ed Roush is having a big season but there is very little to build around him. Dolf Luque and Eppa Rixey is where the strength of this team lies as the rotation has been solid and Bob Geary has been lights out as the club closer. The Reds to have a winning mindset and no one is going to tell this team they wont be able to catch the Pirates. They better score more runs to do so. 1985 Detroit Tigers - Sparky Anderson also has his club in a decent spot only 5 games out of first. Darrell Evans however finished the month on an 0-23 slide but the Trammell/Whitaker combination is also working for this team and Kirk Gibson continues to play hard and well with 15 home runs and 40 RBI. Juan Berenguer has pitched better then his 1-10 record as Tiger pitching hasnt been bad at all. Dan petry did lose his rotation job with an ERA over 6 to Randy O'Neal who is now 5-1 in his place. A very interesting team to watch in a division that can go a number of ways. 1948 Chicago Cubs - After a 20 loss May, the Cubbies look like one of the weakest teams in the NL. Last in runs and OBP the team needs to thank Andy Pafko who is the only player keeping the offense respectable. The Cubs are 11-20 away from home and have been terrible at night. The team does not run the bases well even when they do get on, and they are dead last in steals with only 8. Bob Rush and Johnny Schmitz have been good starters but the pen has been bad and options are very thin. The brand of baseball this team is playing, very few people would want to watch. |

Season 6
June https://i1.wp.com/www.retroseasons.c...-ATb-152-0.jpg Attachment 1046108 Awards Batter of the month AL: Dwight Evans (1974 Red Sox) Batter of the month NL - Tris Speaker (1910 Red Sox) Pitcher of the month AL - Kenley Jansen (2016 Dodgers) Pitcher of the month NL - Ed Karger (1906 Pirates) Injuries Pep Deininger (1909 Phillies) - Elbow (6 weeks) Accomplishment Kitty Bransfield (1909 Phillies) hits for the cycle against the 1906 Pirates. American League East Things have gotten very tight and very interesting in this division. The 1985 Cardinals slumped all month long losing 17 games while the 1960 Cubs made up some ground playing at about .500. The biggest gainers were the 1974 Red Sox who won 17 games and are now just two games back. Dwight Evans won player of the month honors for the second straight month and is hitting .337 while Bernie Carbo hit .522 in his last 1 games. Danny Cox and the Cardinals pitching had a rough patch and the offense cant get on base to utilize its speed. Even the 1930 Pirates still have alot to play for just 8 games out. The darlings of the division have to be the Cubs, who without a star are 18-9 in one run games and sitting tied on top of the division. American League East Twenty one wins in the month of June including a 10 game winning streak and the 2016 Dodgers are running away with things heading into the break. Kenley Jansen had 12 saves in the month without allowing a run while Clayton Kershaw threw 17 scoreless innings in his last 2 starts. The 1994 Padres saw Tony Gwynn cool off and they took their lumps getting swept at Dodger Stadium. Lou Whitaker has heated up and the 1988 Tigers have played better but are still a game under .500. The 1979 Cubs keep showcasing the power of Dave Kingman who now has 26 HR with 61 RBI but the club is going nowhere as team defense and overall pitching hasnt shown up. It really does appear that no one in the end will be able to keep pace with the rolling Dodger machine. National League East After some harsh words and a team meeting, the champion 1946 Cardinals woke up and seem to want to put up a fight in the East. A good series win in Boston gave them confidence and Stan Musial has been incredible ending the month with 77 RBI already. Tris Speaker was player of the month as he is hitting .372 with 24 RBI but the rotation is really missing the injured Smokey Joe Wood. Sammy Sosa has 22 home runs and Carlos Zambrano is 10-2 but the Cubs are prone to mistakes and are haven't played well since April. The 1909 Phillies had a winning month and have been a pleasant surprise. Kitty Bransfield is a fan favorite with 57 RBI while Sherry Magee is hitting .327. Still Boston has a good grip on things heading into the break but if the Cardinals remain hot, we could have a very interesting race to the finish. National League West The 1921 Reds catch and pass the 1906 Pirates to end the month and look like they have no intention of looking back. Their play stunned Pittsburgh as the Reds are an amazing 27-10 in one run games with Bob Geary becoming a very good closer with 15 saves and a 0.84 ERA. Edd Roush leads a modest offense that hits when it needs to. The 1906 Bucs had a losing month and the pitching has been the reason. Vic Willis and Sam Leever need to be much better in the rotation while any thought of a Pirate pen has been a disaster. The 1985 Tigers had a very rough month but Sparky Anderson says he still believes in this bunch as they sit 8 games behind the lead but with plenty of season ahead of them. Finally the 1948 Cubs looked much better in June but no one really is taking them seriously. Can the Pirates punch back after the Reds big June surge? These two midwest rivals will be going at is all season long. |

Season 6
July Attachment 1047281 Awards Batter of the month AL: Joc Pederson (2016 Dodgers) Batter of the month NL - Kitty Bransfield (1909 Phillies) Pitcher of the month AL - Alex Wood (2016 Dodgers) Pitcher of the month NL - Eppa Rixey (1921 Reds) Injuries Dick McAuliffe (1974 Red Sox) - Tricep (3 weeks) American League East Quite the story is emerging in Season 6 as the 1960 Cubs, whom no one expected to compete, continue to hold the top spot in the division. Chicago refuses to swoon and even swept the 1985 Cards at Wrigley Field. Billy Williams and Ernie Banks have combined for 53 home runs and Ron Santo is hitting .311 with 58 RBI. The Cardinals have not seen the great starting pitching which they depend on as their offense often times scraps for runs. Jack Clark does have 19 home runs and 72 RBI but there is real concern by Whitey Herzog as two months remain to make things right. The 1974 Red Sox are not completely out of it but close, The pitching, especially the pen has been horrible while Bernie Carbo is 1 for his last 22 to end the month. The 1930 Pirates have checked out for the season and the club should have been better. Last in FIP and pitchers WAR has made it tough to watch. Can the Cubs really do it? American League West Just cruising, the 2016 Dodgers will likely have no more competitive baseball until the playoffs. Dave Roberts has this tesm playing exceptional ball as Alex Wood wins pitcher of the month and is thinking Cy Young with 17 wins and a 2.14 ERA. Joc Pederson won hitter of the month nad has 23 home runs with 71 RBI. The 1988 Tigers saw Lou Whitaker win the home run derby and the team has played winning baseball but no where near good enough. Allan Trammell has 75 RBI and the team is first in home runs at 137. Tony Gwynn is back at it with his average now at .385 after a big month and dreams of .400 resurface. San Diego sits around .500 and is a club that can run but the run production and slugging isnt there. For the 1979 Cubs, all eyes remain on Dave Kingman who has hit 37 home runs with 85 RBI which is even more impressive on a last place team. Bruce Sutter and Willie Hernandez do make one of the best pens in the league, that is the few times they play with a lead. National League East Spring has turned to late summer and it looks as if the 1946 Cardinals will not find their championship form. The favorites have been a stern disappointment thus far and now the hill may be too tall to climb. Stan Musial is having a great season with 102 RBI and a .343 pace but the St. Louis offense has been middle of the road. The Cards are just 27-32 on the road. At the top remain the 1910 Red Sox who are lead by the uncompilable Tris Speaker who already has 9.1 WAR on the season. Speaker is a real triple crown candidate and the Sox have ridden his wave. The team has stole 210 bases while hitting an impressive 135 home runs. This may be their season of destiny as the tunes of Tessie are sung loudly in the fairgrounds. Kerry Wood has been hit hard of late for the 2002 Cubs and his ERA is now 5.00. Sammy Sosa has 27 home runs but the Cubbies although with over 700 strikeouts as a team, cant keep pace in the race. The 1909 Phillies were having a respectable season but won only 9 games in July and the next two months can simply be played out for pride. National League West The other great race of this season is in the NL West where the 1921 Reds and the 1906 Pirates continue to slug it out. The Reds lost two out of three in Pittsburgh but rallied for a good month to stay in first. Eppa Rixey has 16 wins and Bob Geary has 22 saves with a miniscule 1.93 ERA. The Pirates are riding a hot Deacon Phillipe who had a good July but there is not pen on this deadball team and late leads are a problem. The offense is first in average and OBP. The two teams meet 3 more tines in Pittsburgh. The 1988 Tigers should not be ignored and could sneak their way to the top only 5.5 out. Sparky Anderson had this team surge to 17 wins in July and belief is growing in MoTown. Jack Morris and Lou Whitaker have been carrying the load. The 1948 Cubs will be spoilers for the final months. Andy Pakko continues his fine season but Chicago is last in almost all offensive areas. The race in this division should be fun and wide open as we get into autumn. |

August Attachment 1048530 Speaker Lost For Season https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...is_Speaker.jpg Awards Batter of the month AL: Dwight Evans (1974 Red Sox) Batter of the month NL - Ginger Beaumont (1906 Pirates) Pitcher of the month AL - John Tudor (1985 Cardinals) Pitcher of the month NL - Dolph Luque (1921 Reds) Injuries Tris Speaker - (1910 Red Sox) - Broken kneecap - Season Jon Lieber (2002 Cubs) - Torn rotator cuff - Season American League East It was time for the 1985 Cardinals to turn it on and that is exactly what they did in August winning 19 games and overtaking the 1960 Cubs. John Tudor won pitcher of the month throwing two shutouts while Willie McGee continues a big season hitting .315 and Jack Clark has 26 HR and 91 RBI. The Cubs still had a good month and enter the final month with all to play for only a game out. They remain first in home runs with 171 and can score but it will be the pitching that will need to stand tall for the miracle to happen. The teams play three times at Wrigley in the last week of the season. The 1974 Red Sox had a big month winning 17 lead by Dwight Evans who couldn't be put out. The Sox are 7.5 games back and would need a real act of God to finish top; still their emergence to end the season is notable. The 1930 Pirates limp to the finish line in a terrible effort in Season 6. A club with abundant talent was never in it from start to finish. Larry French will come close to winning 20 games. American League West The feeling in LA is great as the 2016 Dodgers should wrap up the division with weeks to spare. Corey Seager has his average up to .344 and leads a depedable offense but it has been Dodger pitching that has taken the league by storm. Alex Wood won his 20th game in August while Clayton Kershaw and Kenta Maeda have helped the staff strikeout 912 batters. The Dodgers are thinking of only a championship now. The 1994 Padres sit at .500 with Tony Gwynn now at .375. Trevor Hoffman adds 34 saves but the backend of the pen and a lack of almost any real power to the lineup have cost this team dearly. The 1988 Tigers have packed it in and Jack Morris is ending a nightmare season with 15 losses and a 5.63 ERA. Despite fine defense behind them, the pitching just never showed up allowing the most home runs in the game; no one can catch them there. Dave Kingman continues his effort to hit 50 HR as he sits on 44 but also has 104 RBI. Cubs pitching and defense has let them down even with Bruce Sutter and Willie Hernandez anchoring a strong bullpen. National League East A tragedy what happened to Tris Speaker when he went down on the 28th against the Cubs to suffer a gruesome knee injury and end his season. Speaker was clearly the MVP front runner for his first place 2010 Red Sox. He had a 11.4 WAR with a month to play and had an outside shot to win the triple crown. The Sox should be able to hold on for the division win, but their morale and viability just went crumbling down. The 1946 Cardinals now have to suffer the distinction of being a world champion club that wont be moving on. Stan Musial couldn't carry the Cards despite hi excellent season. The Cards are minus 8 in their pythagorium record and should have been much better. As expected the 2002 Cubs saw a load of Sammy Sosa home runs but their pitching couldn't stay healthy with Mark Prior and Jon Lieber calling it an early season. The 1909 Phillies had heads turning early in the season but they have won 20 games in 2 months anc could not get over spotty pitching. Sherry Magee should finish off a nice season with a .942 OPS. National League West The race in the West is far from decided and should take things to the wire. The 1906 Pirates go 18-10 in th. e month as Ed Karger has won 21 games over 248 innings. Ginger Beaumont may be the hottest hitter in the game now batting .325 with 95 RBI and poised for a strong finish. The 1921 Reds saw the Bucs surge past them but they intend to turn the tide. Reds pitching and defense remain elite as no one threw the ball better then Dolph Luque in August. The offense is the key for this team to end strong. The two clubs end the season with 4 games against eachother at Exposition Park. The 1985 Tigers fell out of the race with a tough 18 loss month. Jack Morris on this team hasn't been good either losing 17 times meanwhile Sparky's pen has been in shambles most of the season. Finally the 1948 Cubs were never really in it but can play spoilers to end the season. The Cubs barely have 500 runs on the season and the team pitching, even though it has been decent, could not make up the differance. |

Whiteyball lead to 175 steals, tops in the league, and the big bat of Jack Clark hit 32 bombs with 111 RBI. John Tudor won 24 games while Ken Dayley and Todd Worrell worked as a fine tandem in one of the better pens in the game. Still the 2016 Dodgers fear no one and finished off their season with the best record in the game topping at 100 wins and a 17 game division win. Three 20 game winners make this rotation the most feared in the game and Kenley Jansen had a historic year as closer saving 42 games with a 1.11 ERA. Jansen allowed 10 earned runs all season long! Corey Seager hit .340 and had a slick glove as LA hit 195 home runs to lead the league. Joc Pederson drove in 98 runs and Trayce Thompson hit 27 home runs. These two franchises have a long and bitter rivalry between them and had to feel this matchup would eventually happen. It the biggest contrast of styles one can find in a series, but many feel the Dodger pitching will simply be too much. National League Championship Series https://cdn.ssref.net/req/202502101/...r/PIT-1906.pnghttps://cdn.ssref.net/req/202502101/...r/BOS-1910.png 1906 Pittsburgh Pirates (89-73) vs 1910 Boston Red Sox (96-66) A perfect deadball era matchup to determine the pennant in the National League. The 1910 Red Sox lost their superstar in Tris Speaker and no one man can replace his 11.4 WAR; however the club has vowed to win it for him. Ray Collins won 24 games like a meteor and Frank Arrellanes found a way to save 42 games. Still Smoky Joe Wood remains the ace of this team and his stuff will go a long way in this series. Duffy Lewis ened the year with 126 RBI while the team hit a remarkable 206 home runs proving that they found a modern way to play this game. The way this team simply ran away from the 1946 Cardinals this year proves their guile as a club. The 1906 Pirates spent all season holding off the 1921 Reds and they did so with a strong finish. The Bucs lead the league in runs and hit .282 as a club with a .340 WoBa. Honus Wagner ended with a cool .350 mark while leading the league with 53 steals. Surely Honus will be the centerpiece of this series. Ed Krager also won 24 games and overall one can say Pittsburgh pitching should have an edge with Deacon Phillipe and Vic Willis expected to play a big role. With the pennant up for grabs, the games should be tight and warlike ij this series. The team battled to an even 8-8 record during the season. Post Season American League Championship Series Cardinals Peak At Perfect Time They Wrestle Pennant From Dodgers In Seven https://www.biglumberbaseball.com/up...jpg?1576551529 Often times it is the team that has a fight to even get to the post season to is better prepared from it then the side that coasted on its way there. The 1985 St. Louis Cardinals shook off underdog labels and overcame the 100 win 2016 Los Angeles Dodgers in 7 hard fought game to take the American League flag. St. Louis took the first two games of the series on the West Coast and took a commanding 3 games to 1 lead in game 4 aftet they hammered Alex Wood for the second time. Clayton Kershaw brought the Dodgers back holding off the Cards in game five and preventing a home celebration. In game six it even looked like the Dodgers were going to make it all the way back as they took game six with a two run eighth inning and a Kanley Jansen save. Game seven was the crossroads for Whitey and the Cardinals. Did they have enough resolve to win a tough series like this one? A five run third inning saw Alex Wood once again fall victim to St. Louis while Danny Cox and an array of Cardinal arms made sure game seven had no drama at all and in the end this St. Louis team had their crown. Andy Van Slyke had 10 RBI in the series and hit .520 while unheralded bat Mike Spanky Lavaliere had 9 RBI including a 4-4 game 2 performance stunning the Dodgers. "All that matters is who is standing there in the end" said Van Slyke, who saved his very best baseball for the perfect time. National League Championship Series Red Sox Singing Tessie In Five Game Victory Pirate Bats Silenced To Tune Of Boston Arms https://keepingscore.blogs.time.com/...0&h=320&crop=1 Still missing their best player in Tris Speaker, the 1910 Boston Red Sox looked like a team with no other alternative then to win. Boston overwhelmed the 1906 Pirates and march into the World Series as the favorites to take it all. The series was suppose to be a close one between two teams from the same era. Smoky Joe Wood set the tone in game one going nine innings and striking out 8 in a 9-1 win. Bill Carrigan lead the charge in a game two win to the singing voices of Huntington Grounds. And in game three, the Red Sox took the life out of the Pirates as they beat them at home to take a 3-0 lead embarrassing them in the process winning 13-3. The Bucs did show some pride in avoiding the sweep and pitching themselves up in game four with a win. In game five however Ray Collins displayed his best stuff going the full nine innings and not allowing a single earned run as the Red Sox closed things out on their opponents field. Carrigan ended with 8 RBI while Jake Stahl hit two home runs. Still it was Boston pitching that frustrated and set the tone for the easy series win. Confidence for them is at its peak as the World Series beckons. Honus Wagner and the Pirates lacked the extra glitz that they needed. Manager Fred Clarke admitted in the end that the Sox were more inspired and were more prepared to play and more prepared to win. |

Larry Gardner drives in three runs and Harry Lord hits a ninth inning home run as Ray Collins gets the win striking out eight. Game 2 In St. Louis - Danny Cox and Elmer Steele battle neck and neck to the late innings in a pitchers duel. With the game tied at 1 in the 8th, Tommy Her breaks the knot with an RBI single before Todd Worrell logs two scoreless innings to tie the series before it heads east to Boston. Game 3 In Boston - It is all St. Louis in game three as Charley Hall has little early surrendering 4 runs in the first inning. Cardinal starter Joaquin Andujar would hold the lead the rest of the way going seven strong as the visiting side pulls away for a crucial win in the series. Game 4 In Boston - Mike Lavaliere who has become the darling hero for the Cards in the post season hits a three run home run in the 8th inning off Ray Collins to break the game wide open. John Tudor gets the win and Ken Dayley gets the save as the Cards pen continues to impress. Game 5 In Boston - Boston refuses to go down quietly and pulls of a good win in game five scoring 8 times. Larry Gardner and Bill Carrigan each drive in three runs and a very young Eddie Cicotte closes out the game to send the series back to St. Louis. Game 6 In St. Louis - Tommy Herr clears the bases in the first inning and the Cardinals score four times off Charley Hall to set the tone in their clinching win. Joaquin Andujar pitched well with the lead once again but a tense ninth inning kept everone on edge until it was Ken Dayley again closed the series off leaving the tying run 90 feet away. Tommy Herr is the MVP of the series. Attachment 1051132 Attachment 1051134 Attachment 1051135 MVP Attachment 1051133 |

April Attachment 1053835 Awards Batter of the month AL: Mike Sweeney (2003 Royals) Batter of the month NL - Elmer Smith (1919 Indians) Pitcher of the month AL - Orel Hershiser (1986 Dodgers) Pitcher of the month NL - Bill Castro (1979 Brewers) Injuries Bill Melton (1972 White Sox) - Ankle (3-4 weeks) Jeremy Hill (2003 Royals) - Shoulder (3 months) American League East No one is over the .500 mark in the division as the competition has opened in full parity. The 1921 Red Sox are being carried by their starting pitching with a 2.81 ERA for the starters as Allen Russell has allowed 2 earned runs in 42 innings. The Red Sox however are last in offense in the opening month. The 2006 Athletics are tops in defense lead by Eric Chavez and his mastery. Mark Kotsay has knocked in 19 and is hitting .330 early but Oakland has not differentiated. Mike Sweeney was AL player of the month after driving in 25 with 9 home runs. Royals pitching however could be in for a long year with a 5.30 team ERA. Finally the 1933 White Sox won only 11 games as Red Faber has been drilled late in games but Al Simmons and Luke Appling are both hitting well in the middle of the Chicago lineup. Ted Lyons deserves better losing four games with a 2.12 ERA. American League West Unlike the East, every club in the West has opened with a winning record in what could become a really intriguing group. The 1963 White Sox are out to make a statement as Gary Peters leads a good rotation and Pete Ward has been blasting pitching hitting .380 early on. The Sox have the best team ERA in the league. The 1974 Twins have rode their luck winning 15 when their Pythag says otherwise. Craig Kusick has seven home runs and Bert Blyleven has 68 strikeouts and leads the rotation. Bill Campbell has 12 saves with a 0.79 ERA as closer. Orel Hershiser leads the 1986 Dodgers to a surprise start. The bulldog is a perfect 5-0 even as the arms behind him have struggled a bit. Mike Marshall has 11 home runs and 27 RBI and along with Pedro Guerrero have LA tops in most offensive categories. With a strong pen, the 2009 Orioles are starting to believe in themselves as Adam Jones is at .365 and Luke Scott has 20 RBI and has proved a good early power bat. The Orioles have played in a bunch of close ones thus far, and will lean on their pen pead by Koji Uehera and Phil Hughes to win them. National League East No club has come out of the gate like the 1919 Indians who are already over 10 games up in the race and won 20 games in April. Elmer Smith has 29 RBI and Smoky Joe Wood has hit .500 over the past week. Cleveland is 10-3 at home and look like a runaway early in season 7. The 1967 Senators are struggling with depth even early in the season. Frank Howard looks as good as ever with a .973 OPS in April and the club is tied for first in home runs. The starting pitching has been bombed with Pete Richert already sporting 6.32 ERA nd Camilo Pascual showing his age. Henry Aaron is batting only .206 to start the campaign and is a big reason why the 1969 Braves are no competing. Felix Milan and Felipe Alou are making up for it with good starts but the team is slow and the starting pitching has been underwhelming. Milt Pappas has been chosen as the early season closer. The 1969 Expos have scored only 89 runs and hit .246 as a team which keeping them from competing as their 19 losses show. The rest of the division better wake up in May or the Indians can start coasting by the All Star Break. National League West The 1979 Brewers have already built up the excitement at County Stadium as they surge out to the early lead in the West. The lineup is first in home runs and Paul Molitor is hitting .324 out of the leadoff spot. The offense hasnt even hit its stride yet but ace Moose Haas sure has going 4-0 with a 2.62 ERA to start; he Brew Crew are surely for real. The 1972 White Sox lost slugger Bill Melton to a bad ankle but still remained at .500. as the likes of Buddy Bradford held the fort along with Dick Allen who drove in 20. The tailend of the Sox rotation is an issue with no proven arm pas the top three guys. The 1975 Expos are also at .500 and played some good ball to open the season. Gary Carter hit .400 for the month and was his usual excellent self behind the plate. Montreal leads the league in steals and they have been a team that has held leads well in the early going; Dale Murray has 8 saves. Finally the 2005 Dodgers are realizing they dont really have the arms to win as Odalis Perez and Derek Lowe both have ERA's around 6 to start the season. The offense is not nearly as strong as it needs to be a an older Jeff Kent is hitting only .217 out of the gate. |

May Attachment 1055115 Awards Batter of the month AL: Brian Roberts (2009 Orioles) Batter of the month NL - Hank Aaron (1969 Braves) Pitcher of the month AL - Joe Horlen (1963 White Sox) Pitcher of the month NL - Woodie Fryman (1975 Expos) Injuries Jose Valentin (2005 Dodgers) - Neck (5-6 weeks) Bill Castro (1979 Brewers) - Forearm (3 months) American League East The 2003 Royals had two losing months but are still hanging on to first place which will tell you the flux of the division. The Royals lost reliever Jeremy Hill for three months but Jeremy Affeldt is doing his best as a closer with 8 saves. Mike Sweeney has a .940 OPS in his hot start. The 2006 Athletics are leaning on starting pitching as Rich Harden has won 7 games already and on offense the team is first in home runs with 56. The team has had some bad luck and should still remain the favorites for the top. The 1953 White Sox did provide a winning record and are in the thick of things, better then many expected going into June. Al Simmons is a terror at the plate with 40 RBI and a .361 average while the club defense has supported a shaky pitching staff that allows a lot of hard contact. Ed Durham is the only Sox starter with a winning record. Despite their very underwhelming start, the 1921 Red Sox are only 2.5 games back but the Babe Ruth less offense is last in the league despite Del Pratt hitting an eye opening .380 so far. The analytical numbers however do not bode well for this team. Does anyone want to win this division? American League West Proving to everyone just how good they are the 1963 White Sox have the best record in the game after two months. Gary Peters is thinking Cy Young with an 11-3 record while Hoyt Wilhelm has been the best closer in the league with 14 saves and a 1.74 ERA. The Sox are first in runs with Pete Ward hitting .374 with 46 RBI. The Sox are 18-5 at home and could be riding a season of destiny. Brian Roberts won hitter on the month honors for the 2009 Orioles who are fighting to keep pace with Chicago. Roberts hit .550 over the closing week of the season while Adam Jones is hitting .325 and has also been excellent in the middle of the order. Koji Uehera is a capable closer but the rotation is where the team has its warts. David Hernandez had an ERA over 10 in May for a sinking staff. The 1986 Dodgers wish they were in another division as another winning month still sees them 9 games back. The rotation has been very good with Orel and Fernando leading the way. Closer Alejandro Pena has blown one too many games and likely wont be the closer in June. Mike Marshall continues to sizzle with 15 HR. Finally the 1974 Twins are getting a good run out of Bert Blyleven and Rod Carew is hitting .305, this division however just may be too much for them to compete. National League East Days have been good for the 1919 Indians even if they didnt play as well in May. They hold a 11.5 game lead and seem just too talented to expect to give it up. Elmer Smith still is thinking MVP with 16 HR and 53 RBI. The team has a 13.9 hitting WAR and leads in almost every NL hitting category. The pitching has been uneven at times, but there will be plenty of time to fix those things before October. Henry Aaron had a big month but the 1969 Braves havent done much better. The Braves pen is among the best in the league lead by Milt Pappas but the offense is slow and makes a ton of mistakes on the bases. Orlando Cepeda hit .136 in the month seeming to lose all his confidence. The 1967 Senators improved their play and can have their sites on trying to catch the Braves. The club is last in average and OPS and the pitching staff is barely respectable with a 4.77 ERA. Frank Howard and Ken Harrelson have combined for 28 HR and do intimidate when they step to the dish. For the 1969 Expos the season never really started as they have won 15 games in 2 months. The offense has tried to stay afloat with Manny Mota hitting .319 and Mack Jones having a good year. The pitching, especially the pen has been a mess and as with all bad teams, this Expos team seems to always find a way to lose a game. National League West The race remains tight in the West and three teams are poised for a fight through the summer. The 1975 Expos have excited their fans as they sti in first after two months. Ellis Valentine is proving to be a star while the young Gary Carter is hitting .338. The Expos are second in the NL in runs and do it without the long ball but with gritty complementary baseball. The Brew Crew still feel they are the best team in the division but they suffered a losing month including losing 2 out of 3 to Montreal. The pen has fallen apart in alot of ways as the injury of Bill Castro has stung. Moose Haas is 6-1 and has taken the role of ace while Gorman Thomas and Ben Oglive are pacing the offense that should get better a the weather heats up. The 2005 Dodgers believe in themselves sitting 2.5 games back in this open division. Brad Penny has 8 wins and is showing off excellent control while Jonathan Broxton leads the league with 18 saves and has been lights out in close games. The offense needs work as Milton Bradley has struggled and JD Drew has only seven home runs. The injury to Jose Valentin will making scoring runs even more of a chore. Finally the 1972 White Sox have been too close to average to improve their chances in the West. Dick Allen does have 18 home runs and 51 RBI and is playing with great determination. Likely however, this Sox team will not have enough. |

June Attachment 1057022 Awards Batter of the month AL: Adam Jones (2009 Orioles) Batter of the month NL - Tris Speaker (1919 Indians) Pitcher of the month AL - Bullett Joe Bush (1921 Red Sox) Pitcher of the month NL - Steve Renko (1975 Expos) Injuries Dioner Navarro (2005 Dodgers) - ACL (Seasom) American League East The worst division we have seen in 7 seasons has to be this AL as every club still has a losing record. The 2006 Athletics took over the top spot with a decent month lead by Rich Harden who pitched big and now has nine wins with 139 strikeouts. The starters are tops in strikeouts but is the Oakland offense that is unspectacular and holds this team back. The 2003 Royals finished June losing nine of ten as other then Carlos Beltran, the defense has been amateurish. Runelys Hernandez is 2-11 and Royals pitching has been hit hard; its a miracle this club is only a game and half out. The 1921 Red Sox saw Bullett Joe Bush heat up and win pitcher of the month the the Sox are last in the league in scoring runs and are last in home runs and steals. Del Pratt continues a good season hitting .359 but the club will need to ease the pressure on the Boston starters. The 1933 White Sox won only nine times in the month but only six games back just cant throw in the towel. They are 14-29 away from home and other then Ted Lyons, the pitching on the Chicago staff has been puddy in hitters hand and things look to likely get worse. American League West The club making the biggest statement thus far this season has to be the 1963 White Sox. Playing high level ball the Sox won 19 games in June after 23 in May and now have run away with the west. Every starter is over 10 wins and the offense is tops in the league in just about everything. Pete Ward has a 182 OPS+ and the team is hitting .281. Never has a group of unspectacular hitters looked so good. The 2009 Orioles had a winning month and a solid record but the heat has just been too much. Adam Jones really is a star hitting .344 with 54 RBI while the Oriole pen is best in the league supporting an overachieving staff lead by 11 win Brian Matusz. The 1974 Twins are five games over but over 13 back as they have leaned on pitching as Bert Blyleven has struck out 181 and Bill Campbell has 19 saves. Craig Kusick is having a nice season hitting .310 with 14 HR already. The 1986 Dodgers have faded away losing 17 games in the month as Alejando Pena and the pen have struggled. Mike Marshall has 18 home runs and Franklin Stubbs one better at 19 as the club has played in bad luck with their Pythag record 5 games better then what it is. National League East The 1919 Indians continuie their sprint to the division win with another big month and a 12 game lead. Tris Speaker has once again come to the forefront winning hitter of the month and holding steady with a .380 average tops in the game. Johnny Enzmann has become one of the best closers in the game with 18 saves. The 1967 Senators have held their own for a nice season so far even if they cant really hope for a top spot. Ken Harrelson and Frank Howard are ll muscle in the middle of the order even if they miss too much. Camilo Pascual had a good month for a overachieving staff and the Senators really will fight to finish at .500. Falling like a lump of coal are the 1969 Braves who lost 18 games in June. The Braves have allowed the most home runs in the league so far and overall team speed is lacking both on the bases and on defense. Rico Carty is having a nice season but this club has been a major letdown. Up in Montreal the 1969 Expos are 40 games under .500 but will play out the rest of the season looking to take small steps. Bob Bailey and Mack Jones have both driven in over 50 runs but Expos pitching have been deplorable and the club just doesn't have nearly the talent to be competing. National League West On the very bright side for Canada are the 1975 Expos who have also taken the league by storm winning 9 out of 10 to end the month and hold a 3 game lead in the division. Ellis Valentine is hitting .351 in the cleanup spot and the club is tops in the game with 121 steals. Steve Rogers was on point in the month with a 2.25 ERA and now has 12 wins. The 1972 White Sox won 20 games and really believe they can make a run at glory this year. Dick Allen has 22 home runs and most pitchers in the league are shaking in their boots. The rotation has been steady with Wilbur Wood 11-6 with a 3.05 ERA. Terry Foster has earned 21 saves as closer and looks like a revelation. Injuries continue to hurt the 2005 Dodgers but they are still playing good enough ball to hope. Brad Penny has been a good leader for the rotation but Dodger bats are not as consistent as they need to be. Jeff Kent is stuck on 8 home runs and the club doesnt run well. Jonathon Broxton however has 28 saves and really has been unhittable. The 1979 Brew Crew have broken hearts falling to last place losing 19 times and seemingly losing their confidence. With their closer hurt, the Brewer pen has been a bad puzzle and the starters ERA ballooned to 5.46. Milwaukee is now over 10 games and now can officially start to worry. |
