Some Offseason Organization
This is my offseason to-do list. I'll add to it as necessary.
In no particular order: 1. Make a backup and copy of the league. Prepare to fuse the league. 2. Create a schedule that meets my needs. 3. Remember to change the draft order before the draft. 4. Curse at the things the association will do before I change it to a league on 1 January 2298. Ponder why I have to wait until 1 January 2298 (I know = History recording purposes). 5. Roll dice for October-March for random events. 6. Work on (and possibly post) stories around the Commonwealth. Introduce some new characters. Maybe finally tease the storyline, "A Hubflower for Magnolia" (working title). 7. Work on banners for Oberland and the minor league ballparks. 8. January 1 - Choose Egret's new team nickname with accompanying logo and uniform. Change Shaw HS to Roxbury. 9. Check that awards are being populated. Post those. 10. Check my disorganization of notes, including my 17-sheet Excel file and my 176-page Word document. Yikes! Make sure I did not miss anything with my plans. For example, the Corvega situation. |
September 2297 - News and Notes - September 18
OOTP decided Irish Cait was going to sell Starlight to some dude from Montana. Curious about that epic failure for the team during the season. That wasn't happening for her not to be the owner, so I made this a random event. Cait got back control of her team but decided to be ruthless with the failures that happened. Methinks there is more to this story!
https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1586093507 Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kowalski 18 September 2297 - Starlight Wastes No Time, Cleans House Disappointed by her team's epic failure from battling for the top record in the CBO to missing the playoffs altogether, Starlight Lady Killers' owner Irish Cait decided the entire major-league staff had to go. Of course, the two to take the most blame were general manager Bobby Childress and manager Tick Raid. "I talked with Bobby and Tick and the first thing that kept coming out of their mouths was that they don't know," Cait said. "I told them I paid too much of me money for don't knows. I was apt to lop their ****ing heads off, but instead I let them go. I mean, our team became the hot tato." The Lady Killers started the season 21-9, which was just one game back of Oberland at that time for the best record in the CBO. Lacking that killer instinct, they finished the season 7-23 to drop all the way into a fourth-place tie in the Institute League. "I learned me lesson about the boys club," Cait said. "I would do it meself, but I don't want the boys to get their knickers in a bunch. So I'm going to hire some people with brass balls instead of eggshells." The list of fired staff are: GM Bobby Childress DOC Dr. Soop Grinch MGR Tick Raid BC Adam Fields PC Sam Sellers HC Holger Fleming Scout Josh Vandoor "I was so frustrated," Cait said. "I wanted to sell. Hell, I wanted Jet. Then I just got angry. Tears rained." 18 September 2297 - Skipper Monitor Cut by Dwellers A team source leaked the news to the press early this morning and it was confirmed in an afternoon press release: Vault 81 manager Crow Monitor has been fired. Several analysts in the sports media have commented on the Dwellers lackadaisical play of late and it is widely expected that the team will hire a take-charge firebrand as Monitor's replacement. One of the biggest issues was that Vault 81's two best players, power hitters Erns Gold and Deer Quickwalker, were critical of the small-ball mentality of Monitor. They were reportedly unhappy that the team led the CBO in sacrifice bunts in situations that did not call for it. Also hitting coach Menace Merwife was relieved of his duties. Vault 81 GM Mike McGuire released a statement: "In a discussion with team owner Dr. Jacob Forsythe, and as a result of a players-only meeting, we came to an agreement that it was in the best interest of the Dwellers' future success to move on from Mr. Monitor and find a manager and hitting coach to fit the current makeup of our team. We look forward to becoming a winning organization." 18 September 2297 - Staff Retirements and Hirings A few staff have retired, so teams were busy hiring replacements or in the process of doing so on the first day of the offseason. The following were hired today: Easy Town - HC Bobby Lemus - replacing Dave Kibler County Crossing - BC Jason Personhood - replacing Ron McCarthy Jamaica Plain doctor R.J. Norton and Diamond City bench coach Mike Birtwell retired. Those teams have not yet replaced them. |
Sounds like heads deserve to roll, though also kinda funny that first on the chopping block is not the staff over at the Swatters

Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kowalski 19 September 2297 - Oberland GM Retires "I helped build a winner," Oberland GM Tyler Hinson said. "Now it's time to sit back and watch how they develop." Hinson retired from the Oberland T-51s franchise just three days after his team won the CBO Sole Survivor Series. Hinson stated that he wanted to stay in Oberland and would attend every home game while he enjoyed his twilight years. The T-51s will need to seek a GM to maintain a team that looks to be in good shape in the near future. Team owner August Oberland stated that he was in no hurry to seek a replacement. "We'll find the right person when we're ready," Oberland said. "Right now, we're more interested in our title and parade next weekend." 19 September 2297 - Starlight Hires Replacements The Starlight Lady Killers have begun to build their 2298 staff just one day after firing everyone in the organization. Hired today were team doctor Chase Mash and hitting coach Ryan Johnson. Johnson is considered a run manufacturer. He believes in using fast players to steal and take extra bases on base hits. He thinks being thrown out when being aggressive is a better approach than being stranded. "Score, score, score," Johnson said. "I teach players to put a bat on the ball and then run until they get tackled or tagged." 19 September 2297 - Tick Raid Finds Job Just one day after being fired from Starlight, Tick Raid was quickly scooped up by Diamond City to become their bench coach to replace retired Mike Birtwell. Raid is probably a victim of the Lady Killers' Irish Cait's wrath after Starlight folded in the second half of the season. League officials feel Raid is a good coach and that Swatters' owner Moe Cronin probably followed CBO Commissioner Nate Howard's advice in scooping up Raid. According to Diamond City GM Tommy Doddy who is close to Cronin, "We know that Tick is a good coach. He's used to coaching in a stadium similar to ours, and we hope his experience can help our team get better." 20 September 2297 - Red Rockets Choose Doctor The Jamaica Plain Red Rockets have signed talented Dr. Chris Pittman to join the team staff. Pittman has served as one of the top injury surgeons at Milton General Hospital. He has agreed to join the team and open an injury treatment clinic in Jamaica Plain. Pittman does not have as much experience with aerobics, which may affect the team's pitching staff with the expanded schedule in 2298. That was one concern the team expressed with hiring him, but they feel he can work miracles when it comes to on-field and off-field injuries. "We'll try to find someone to help with getting our team in good shape and recover," GM Jason Walenga said. "We do know that if any player gets hurt on the field or attacked by a stingwing or something that Dr. Pittman is one of the best. That gives us confidence in the hire." 21 September 2297 - Vault 81 Finds Its Hitting Coach The Vault 81 Dwellers hired Murder Downey to take over from fired hitting coach Menace Merwife. Downey was a head coach for the Concord-Lexington Minuteboys of the Boston Youth Travel League. 22 September 2297 - County Crossing Makes Moves The County Crossing Bloodbugs decided to move on from GM Mike Pieface, expressing a need to sign better players at all positions. In addition, the Bloodbugs decided to part ways with newly-hired bench coach Jason Personhood, citing an "incident." Multiple anonymous sources have indicated that incident has something to do with team owner Doc Weather's 20-year-old daughter seen leaving Personhood's room last night. Weathers did not make a statement. From his office at the former National Guard Training Yard, they released a simple message: "We are moving on from GM Pieface and BC Personhood. We will seek a GM better at signing players for all positions throughout the franchise. We will also seek a bench coach that fits our team's integrity philosophy." 22 September 2297 - Monitor Signed by Starlight Dropped by Vault 81 as the manager just four days ago, Starlight has signed Crow Monitor to be their bench coach in 2298. Monitor was 29-31 as the Dwellers' manager, good enough for 4th place in the Railroad League. However, top hitters on the team was unhappy with his management style and petitioned to have him removed. Monitor's appraoch to hitting meshes well with newly-hired hitting coach Ryan Johnson. It is yet to be seen who will be hired as manager for the Lady Killers, but it appears that the team is gearing itself to be a small-ball type team. One interesting aspect is the set up of Valentine Detective Agency Field. With a short left field wall, it seems the team would want more right-handed power hitters and fast players who can pepper balls off the movie screen for doubles. It will be an interesting dynamic since players tend to get thrown out more often in Starlight than some other deeper fields. |

Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kowalski 23 September 2297 - County Crossing Signs GM Stating that he already had someone in mind for the position when he fired GM Mike Pieface, County Crossing owner Doc Weathers announced that the team had hired Dan Dall to be the team GM. Dall has not previously worked in baseball, but he was an operating manager for Fallon's Department Store and recently ran a successful political campaign for Dr. Stanley Carrington's mayoral push in Malden. Per a release from Weathers' office: "Dan Dall is sucessful at everything he does. He is loyal to both his superiors and inferiors. He will fight for those beneath him, which raises morale all around. We believe he will help improve our team chemistry and find the right fits in the organization, from coaches to the 30th man on the minor league team. We are pleased he is joining our team." 25 September 2297 - Easy Town Assaultrons Ship Libow to Abernathy The players apparently knew they were on the trading block, so it did not surprise one of them when he learned that he had been traded to Easy Town. "Got my bags packed already," Looter Knol said when reached for comment. The Assaultrons will receive 19-year-old minor league 2B Knol, while 31-year-old SS Lucky Libow will go to the Abernathy Adamantium. Libow played in limited action with Easy Town in 2297. He was 1 for 13 on the season with a run and an RBI. Knol played 13 games with the Bunker Hill Gun Fu before moving up to Abernathy. There he played in only 10 games, going 0 for 8 in 11 plate appearances (.273 OBP). 25 September 2297 - Bloodbugs Sign Fields at BC Former Starlight Lady Killers bench coach Adam Fields is moving east to County Crossing. Fields takes over for recently fired Jason Personhood who allegedly had a compromising situation with County Crossing owner Doc Owens' daughter, leading to his firing. Fields was a part of the Starlight Lady Killers' staff that started the season 21-9 but ended up at just 28-32 on the season. |
News of the end of the Sole Survivor Series came too late on this side of the water for me to comment last night, but I just wanted to say what a great season it has been, really interesting across the leagues, across the Commonwealth - and especially as the Boys got off their butts and made a real fight of it against probably the best team the CBO has seen in it's short existence. Sometimes you just have to tip your hat and say, "Well done" and the T51s were the class of the league throughout the season and really deserved their success. Given the late surge and the more consistent performances across the board from members of the Party Boys squad I am quite optimistic as we move on towards the third season.
Well done, StLee, for presenting what seems to me the most imaginative dynasty on the boards. We really appreciate the hard work that goes into it and I hope the changes you are making in the set-up will allow you to get closer to your vision of the perfect league. Go Boys! |

I try to make this interesting for the readers, but also for me to want to continue on. I look forward to where the future takes this league. As far as perfection, I seek not that lofty goal! There will always be tweaks, always changes, always ways to make things different. At perfection, it is complete! :D |

I am not even checking if rookies are correct here. Whoever OOTP picks, that person is the top rookie, even if he played 60 games in 2296. With the change next season by creating a new league and putting all teams there, the rookie factor will probably be messed up again.

September 2297 - News and Notes - September 30
BOOOOOOOO!!!! on the BL manager choice. It was oviously the Boys' Craig Robinson. I mean, Salem didn't even have a winning record. What are these shenanigans? Recount! We want a recount!
I know. I, the proprietor of this dynasty, get to choose the all-CBO team. Guess who is getting CBO Manager of the Year? ;) https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1586093507 Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kowalski 30 September 2297 - Best Managers Named BL Best Manager, Lighthouse of the Salem Witch Hats: The Salem Witch Hats called a press conference to announce that field manager Proper Lighthouse had been named Brotherhood League Manager of the Year earlier in the day. Staffers congratulated the 38-year-old baseball guru as he approached the podium. "This city has allowed me to craft a winning ball club," said Lighthouse. "When you take on a new job, there's always some adjustment period, but everyone here has been cooperative. From the bat boys on up. Here's to many more successful seasons for the Salem Witch Hats!" Lighthouse led Salem to a 29-31 record this year and a 4th place finish in the Brotherhood League. IL Manager of the Year Award Given to Races: Sprole Races, skipper of the Lexington Synths, was voted 2297 Institute League Manager of the Year and accepted the award earlier today. He guided Lexington to first place in the Institute League with a 36-24 record. "I'm very happy about this," he said at the press conference. "But I'm more happy about what my boys did on the field. They battled their butts off for me all year. They should get the credit." ML Top Manager is Whiteplate of Goodneighbor: Jeremy Whiteplate has molded the Goodneighbor Hancocks into a top-flight Minutemen League team. The 2297 Skipper of the Year came into spring training with a commitment to getting the most out of his Hancocks. "I told them I had no preconceived notions about them, that all of them were blank slates as far as I was concerned. I told them to learn my system and we would win. I told them all the spots on the roster were open, that the best players would play -- young or old, rookie or vet -- and that I expected them to hustle, to work hard, and play as a team. They bought into it and made me look good." And Jeremy Whiteplate certainly got the most out of his ballclub. The Hancocks wrapped up the season in first place in the Minutemen League with a 38-22 record. Steadyhand of Oberland Named RL Best Skipper: Club officials have reported seeing Dirk Steadyhand at the ballpark as early as 7 am. His dedication, coupled with a shrewd management style and a knack for knowing "who's hot and who's not" earned Steadyhand the Railroad League Manager of the Year Award for 2297. "I guess you could say I pushed all the right buttons at the right time for the T-51s to have the season we did. But keep in mind, too, that I also had a group of dedicated ballplayers who played their hearts out. I thank them for winning this award for me." There was much joy in Oberland this season. Their beloved T-51s took first place in the Railroad League, rounding out the year with a 43-17 record. |

More shenanigans in the BL! How did someone who started 8 games win the award?!? Next year, I am king! Nate Howard needs to launch an investigation. I will definitely blow up if a Salem player is named MVP, too!
I don't like the IL choice, either. At least the ML and RL got this one right. https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1586093507 Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kowalski 1 October 2297 - Top Starting Pitchers Salem's Cartrette Elbows His Way to BL Award: The Salem Witch Hats have a rising superstar or maybe even a budding Hall-of-Famer in the making. It's Mike Cartrette, this year's Brotherhood League Sentinel SP Award selection. This blossoming hurler wowed fans, peers and sportswriters with a fabulous performance. Cartrette compiled a 5-1 record in 8 starts, tallied 81 strikeouts in 60.2 innings and recorded a 2.97 ERA. Other clubs managed only a .208 batting average against him. He received 5 first place votes out of a possible 6. Edwin Mass of the The Slog Ghouls finished second in voting with 1 first place vote, while Josh Dude of the Finch Farm Four Leafs finished third. The Radstags ace fashioned an ERA of 3.32 as he won 6 games, dropped 5, fanned 104 and gave up 21 walks in 97.2 innings of work. He received 3 first place votes out of a possible 6. In 20 starts Eloquent had a 13-5 mark with 106 strikeouts in 153.1 innings. He received 6 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. What a 2297 season he had! A fine 11-3 won-lost record, 3.27 ERA, 20 starts, 151.1 innings and 109 strikeouts -- a season good enough to earn him the RL Desdemona SP Award. Being a little short on caps, Storts decided to go beyond sports and invest in Emperor's Shorts Company run by an escort he met in a Fort Hagen alley. Unfortunately for Storts, the Emperor's Shorts are short on comfort, support, and material and high on fraud, bunching Storts' shorts in knots, as well as his tongue. He had no comment. Storts invested in the company and sold stocks of sorts to the unsuspecting. Sorts went to airports, carports, forts, to sell imports and exports of Emperor's invisible (non-existent) shorts. Despite the CBO's fraud counterefforts, Storts' shorts never sorted themselves out, so Storts will sacrifice his comforts and learn not to consort with an escort in selling shorts or anything else. He will live for about two months in a work prison, cracking rocks and eating nothing but razorgrain and liverworts. |

For his spectacular campaign, the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys star has been named the 2297 Brotherhood League Steel MVP Award recipient. "To be considered amongst the best in the league is overwhelming," said the second baseman. On the season he compiled a .412 batting average to go with a .472 on-base percentage. The native of Holyoke, Massachusetts also added 23 doubles, 4 triples, 8 home runs, 39 RBIs and 68 runs scored. He received 6 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. At the age of 20, many players are still trying to find their way in Institute League. Erb has not only found his way, he's already established himself as one of the game's brightest stars, today being named the winner of the Institute League Father MVP Award. "I didn't expect to hit .392 this year, that's for sure," the left fielder said. The Concord Radstags star also put up a .462 on-base percentage this year, with 93 hits, 23 doubles, 9 triples, 8 home runs, 40 RBIs and 59 runs scored. He received 6 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Micah Morals of the Fort Hagen Silver Shroud finished second in voting, while Jim Waples of the Abernathy Adamantium finished third. It's a startling thought when you consider the year he had in 2297 was good enough to win the center fielder the Minutemen League Minutemen Honorary MVP Award. "See the ball, hit the ball," he said. "That's my basic approach." The top hitter put up a .401 batting average this year, as well as a .442 on-base percentage. He played 60 games and racked up 99 hits, 6 doubles, 6 triples, 14 home runs, 52 RBIs and 50 runs scored. He received 6 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Vault 81's Deer Quickwalker and Fairline Hill Estate's Hose Wallcrawler finished in a dead tie, resulting in both receiving the second and last Alpha Award. The new manager of the Vault 81 Dwellers, Jason Personhood, said he thinks Deer Quickwalker is only going to get better as he gets older. He may only be 19, but it will be hard to top the right fielder's 2297 campaign, as he has been named the winner of the Railroad League Alpha Award. His winning campaign featured a .424 batting average and a .484 on-base percentage this year. In 60 games he piled up 104 hits, 22 doubles, 2 triples, 15 home runs, 44 RBI and 49 runs scored. He ended up tied with Hose Wallcrawler with 69 total votes and 69 first place votes. Wallcrawler finished the season with a .365 batting average and a .450 OBP. He played all 60 games, leading the RL in WAR at 4.4. He had 91 hits, 20 doubles, 4 triples, 19 home runs, 61 RBI, and 62 runs scored. Godlike becomes the first synth in a personnel role in the CBO. The Vault 81 Dwellers hired Jason Personhood as their manager on Wednesday, September 29. Personhood was recently fired just four days after being hired in County Crossing. The Dwellers are happy for the change since Personhood is a manager who preaches the long ball. If Deer Quickwalker and Erns Gold do not like his style, they will like no one's style. |

2297 CBO Rookie Draft - Analysis
Top 5
1-1 Diamond City - 1B Oren Gep Skills: Controls the strike zone well. Decent power with the chance to be a mid-range power hitter. Needs to stay consistent in approach to be a good all-around hitter. Personality: Sticks to routine but will sometimes get into bad habits. Needs to work on adaptability to emerge. 1-2 Jamaica Plain - SP Digger Vadim Skills: 4-pitches all good, but curveball could use work. Changeup is his best pitch. Forces a lot of groundballs, so opponents cannot depend on the long ball. Has all tools to be a future ace. Personality: Has been described like a "dog"--loyal, works hard, not going to ever be institute scientist material. Cares more about playing than making caps. 1-3 Atom - SS Jake Doucette Skills: Defense is his strong suit, but he could become a good hitter. Has decent contact but needs to drive more balls to the gaps. He has decent speed but will never lead the league in stolen bases. Personality: Highly adaptable player who is willing to adjust to any situation. Open to position changes. Will fight for his team and teammates. Considers the jersey he is wearing his allegiance. 1-4 Egret - 3B Dog Prairie Skills: He has a good eye and power. Needs to work on defense to be a regular, but he will help a team generate runs from the middle of the lineup. Personality: Some questions about his character. He has some natural instincts but does not show desire to improve, stating he already knows a lot. Could spell trouble for manager if he or his team struggles. Needs guidance. 1-5 County Crossing - SP Dobbie Radoncis Skills: Super fastball with a great ability to place it where he desires, which could get him on the CBO team soon. Had a 4-pitch repertoire but needs to work on improving his forkball, slider, and changeup to be a star. Personality: Likes to learn about the game but does not have the competitive edge some players have. Will enjoy successes but mopes when he struggles. Nordhagen Beach 1 (#18) - 3B Er Temptation Skills: Strong arm that will make him a solid defensive third baseman. A little light, but he makes hard contact and will hit his fair share of homers. Has the ability to improve his eye to draw walks and have a better OBP than other middle-of-the-lineup hitters. Personality: Some question his temper for being such a high pick. Considered a sore loser and often reverts to sour melons excuses. Will need to learn how to lose and not lash out as teammates and coaches. 2 - C Josh Sisco Skills: Has good contact and the abilty to produce extra-base hits. Tends to swing early in the count even against struggling pitchers unable to find the strike zone so grounds out and pops out a lot. Not a particularly talented catcher, so may need to consider another position. Personality: Well-liked. He comes from vault stock--intelligent and well-spoken. 3 - 2B Austin LaFleur Skills: Above average all around makes him a mid-round pick. Struggles a lot against lefties, which will limit his chance to progress to the CBO. Much better numbers against righties could make him more of a situational player. Personality: Leader personality. He leads by example, not by words. Willing to teach teammates and offers encouragement. Future manager. 4 - SP Adoptee Packwood Skills: May end up grading out as a relief pitcher. Has 3 pitches but only his curveball is CBO-level. Needs to throw fastballs at a higher velocity to ever progress. Personality: Giving. A creature of habits. 5 - CF Muddy Barbano Skills: Fast. Can cover a lot of ground in the outfield and steal bases with success. Not a good hitter, especially against righties. Best chance in CBO is as a defensive replacement. Personality: Cares about fitting in makes him change masks depending on company. Purely a follower. Fort Hagen 1 (#16) - CF Organizae Brown Skills: Surpising drop in the draft since he is a three-tool player. Fast to steal and cover a lot of ground in the outfield. Can hit for consistent power, which will make him more likely to be a high average cleanup hitter. Personality: A natural-born leader. Studies the game and shares flaws in opponents with his teammates. Knows his stuff. Highly intelligent. 2 - RF Chris Knickerbocker Skills: Has hard contact when he hits but tends to be a straight pull hitter which can give opposing defenses an advantage. Needs to work on his swing and patience at the plate. Not interested in defense, so he needs to show the willingness to field the ball more than hit it. Personality: Needs to work on focus. Has had balls hit to him where he did not realize the ball was in play. Daydreams on the field. Does work hard for his team. 3 - LF Cheeky Winder Skills: Not very fast, but he has a good glove and arm which will make him a decent fit in either left field or right field. Can have a good average in the league if he ever learns to take balls. Wants to swing at every pitch. Will be a singles hitter if he develops. Personality: Likes to work out. Will run extra laps to stay in shape. Loves being an athlete more than a particular interest in being a baseball player. 4 - SP Jason Lichner Skills: Not a good velocity in his fastball means he relies too heavily on his curveball. Has 3 pitches, but he will probably end up being a 2-pitch reliever stuck in the BMU. Personality: Puts in effort every time he gets his chance to pitch. Not a leader but not a problem either. Willing to be coached. 5 - CF Cuss Rankin Skills: Relies on bunts to generate his hits. Will not get many out of the outfield. Has great speed which is his only redeeming quality, but not expected to come close to a promotion to the CBO. Personality: Private person. Does not hang around with teammates nor talk unless he has no choice. Tends to wander away from post-game festivities. Not going to initiate a conversation or handshake. May not fit into the cult of personality of the CBO. |
Fitting that a guy named Church was taken by Salem? :D
