Gil Stafford

From Topps, Gil Stafford, a career minor leaguer for the Astros (71-72), and the Brewers (73-75). Although being primarily a catcher, he played every infield position except SS in the Brewers minors...also saw some action in the outfield, and even pitched in one game. Makes me think of John Fogerty's song Centerfield..."Oh, put me in coach, I'm ready to play today" ;)

Larry Staab

Also from Topps, Larry Staab, career minor lefthander pitcher for the LA Dodgers (61-67 & 69-70).

Pitcher Steve Williams was a non-roster invitee with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1972. He is shown here in the uniform of the 1976 Charleston Charlies. He died on February 4, 2011.

Bobby Moegle

Bobby Moegle played for three years in the Cardinals system, advancing from D to C to B. His numbers show good power and an ability to draw walks at these levels, but his batting average steadily dropped off. In 1960 he accepted a position to coach high school baseball at Lubbock Monterey High School where he stayed for 40 years and became one of the winningest coaches in Texas High School baseball history, winning several state championships. He was the brother of Dicky Moegle, a college football All American with a six year NFL career.

Bill Stearns 1971-77

Attachment 410731Despite the original caption line, this isn't Sheldon Gill - it's Bill Stearns, brother of John, and Gill's contemporary in the Yankees' farm system in the '70s who never reached the majors. My apologies for the goof. The "card" reference below was to Topps swapping Sheldon Gill for Gil Patterson in a '77 Rookie card and here I swapped Stearns for Gill!

Repeating: it's Bill Stearns:

Wayne McCauley

1 Attachment(s)
Pitcher Robert "Wayne" McCauley was a non-roster invitee with the Chicago White Sox in 1973. His claim to fame was that, while with the Appleton Foxes of the Midwest League in 1972, he struck out 20 batters in one game (but lost it 2-1). Six days later, he threw a 7-inning no-hitter. Now that's quite a week! He is shown here in the uniform of the Appleton (Fox Cities) Foxes.

Roger Alexander

1 Attachment(s)
Pitcher Roger Alexander has the distinction of having been traded for Hank Aaron. I'm exaggerating here, as the trade was Dave May plus Roger Alexander from the Brewers on November 2, 1974 in return for Hank Aaron's moving from the Braves to the Brewers. Roger is shown here in the uniform of the Richmond Braves during the 1977-79 period. He was a non-roster invitee with the Brewers in 1973.

Dave Steffen 1977-81

Pictures of Tigers farmhand Dave Steffen from Topps Vault
Dave Steffen Minor League Statistics & History | Baseball-Reference.com

From Dave Steffen - Find Email Address, Phone Number & More.

"Dave Steffen of Flat Rock, Michigan was inducted in the ISA HOF (Independent Sports Association-Softball)) into the Player Category in 2004 in Ft. Myers, Florida. Nicknamed "The Daffy One" for his colorful antics on and off the field, the 6'4 300 lbs plus, Steffen was an all around athlete earning all state honors in baseball, football, and wrestling at Flat Rock High School. He spurned a football scholarship at the University of Michigan to sign with the Detroit Tigers as a high draft pick. The fire balling right hander made the Major League roster only to suffer an arm injury in Spring Training. His last ditch effort with the Chicago White Sox also failed and he turned to softball."

Here's a photo of a lefty pitcher in camp with the Senators, presumably in 1932, and distributed by the American League "Service Bureau" - the predecessor of the Public Relations Department and up on eBay from seller sfxarchive.

Charles "Buzz" Bower

2 Attachment(s)
Pitcher Buzz Bower was on the Philadelphia Phillies' spring roster in 1950 and 1951. After his playing career ended, he became a scout. He spent over thirty years scouting for the Phillies, Dodgers, and Red Sox. He is in the Professional Scouts Hall of Fame. He died on July 31, 2015. I couldn't find a photo of him in a baseball uniform, but here is one of him in college and one at Age 82, when he was still scouting players.

Delbert "Deb" Blondin Minor League stats

Considered one of the finest athletes ever in Saginaw County, MI, Blondin excelled in baseball, basketball and football while in high school. Signed by the Red Sox, Deb played third base for the Waterloo Hawks in 1960, batting .282 in 36 games. Released, he was offered contracts by the Indians and Tigers but, instead, chose to serve with the U.S. Army in Korea. He served as a police officer in Detroit and then as a police officer and investigator in Arizona and worked with kids in youth baseball leagues. Deb passed away in May of this year. These pictures of Deb accompanied his obituary.

Dyar Miller Minor League stats

There was a request for Dyar Miller Mets images in the major league thread recently, which caused me to find this image on my hard drive. I grabbed it off eBay some time ago, though I apparently didn't make any note of the seller. Still...nice image.
