Hmm, is it possible one of you doesn't have the patch, while the other one does? |

Quirky things always seem to happen with the friends list. I have all three of your team's covered, even with my two non-OL teams. And the thing is, you have to check it every Sunday night, because it has happened that a team preference gets missed after weeks and weeks. Just hang in there. Hopefully you got into some leagues you can bang for points, by setting up your team for offense. See you next week. |

bad news for me, Syrups go 1-2 in first series against Port Ruppert... good news, Ethan Allen is on pace to get 432 hits this season  |

That is very possible. I have been waiting for my tournaments to end before doing the update. Not sure if that would mess things up or not for me, so I figured I'd better play it safe. |

so, I have taken out the offending player. Luckily, he didn't play in two of my first three OL games. He only played in the second one vs. ANN.

Hooterville's perfect season is no more.
After starting the season 2-0, the Haymakers are in the middle of a 5 game skid and are trying to regroup after the devastating realization that they will not go undefeated in their inaugural season in the Grand Our League.

Logged in to my team for the first time today. Coney Island is sitting at 6-5 and just dropped 2 of 3 to the Puppies in its it first OL series of the season. Two games prior to the series I had my longest game that I can remember on any platform winning a 23 inning game 5-4. I lost the following game 3-3 but at least got a complete game out of Ed Figueroa to spare the bullpen.

I'm assuming, like in the past, since Annandale won the game, we'll just count the game for OL. By the way, those of you who see something amiss, don't be shy about binging it up. With the nature of so many small moving pieces in the game, things get overlooked. It helps make it easier when we catch them early. So, please, if you see something, mention it. In the four or five times it happened over the first two seasons, I think it was the manager who caught the mishap in all but one case. Luckily only one went for more than a few days. One of the great thing about OL is we watch out for each other. |
I'm alone in an Iron league...:(

I Think the Freedonia Liberation Front is Haunted
1 Attachment(s)
I can still remember the wondrous surprise of the biggest moment in Port Ruppert's PT 20 adventure in OL. It was the during the Winter Meetings after the 2031 OL season (Sunday morning). A fateful decision was made. I pulled a 100 Cy Young, and, rather than use it to finance the build of the Mundys' OL roster, I convinced myself that it would be disrespectful of baseball history and anger the baseball gods to sell it. Just didn't feel right.
So I decided to pay homage to their great bestowal by selling a lot my players to retool Port Ruppert as an "olde tyme" team (except for Willie Mays, of course). I think the baseball gods were pleased. At least I hope that's why they were laughing so loudly. It turned out that I couldn't afford to get enough of the better "olde-tymers" to compete well against the other OL teams. After several of weeks, I gave it up and tried to regroup and catch back up, but still couldn't get myself to sell Cy. With his point producing aplomb he helped the team get better. I went back into OOTP 20 to check his start date (No, I really don't remember the "wondrous moment that clearly. Or anything else these days.). It was 2032. I looked up his history and saw he had a little over 135,000 PP through 2070. He probably got at least 70,000 of those in his 19 OL seasons, as he had 4 no-hitters (one a perfecto) and 7 one-hitters in OL, and probably 30 or more various post season awards. That's because had 7 silver, a gold, 9 diamond, and only two perfect seasons in OL. After the OL era, he had 7 diamond and 15 perfect seasons, so I figure he earned less. He did have another no-hitter and 8 more one-hitters, but not nearly so many awards. I guess 65,000 or so seems right. You're probably asking yourself, "What the hell does all this mean? Where the hell is he heading with this crap?," and most importantly, "Why the hell am I still reading it?" First, it means that I could have likely tripled the amount of his earnings, got some really nice players early enough to swim with the bigger fish. Second, my ill-fated "olde style" was a setback, because of which, for all his accomplishments, Cy never got the long sought OL crown. There were a few near misses, but there were always just enough games lost using players that the Young PP would have replaced. As for the third question, I can't answer for you. Perhaps you think I'm now going to explain how this ties into the headline on this drivel. Sadly, that will have to wait for an hour so in part two.I noticed there were like 15,000 PP hanging in PT 20 and I wanna rip some packs. Unless, of course, I just made you a too little peeved with the cheap cliffhanger. Oh, by the way, I never regretted not selling him. The weeks of old timer chasing were nostalgic fun, and I loved having the guy they named the award for. Besides, without having kept Cy, I wouldn't be having the fun I am right now writing this crapola. His very basic stats: |
Why I think the Freedonia Liberation Front is Haunted

I was kidding about the hour wait. I will rip those packs later, though.
The attached chart shows the details of the kind of pack ripping dumb luck I've read about on the forum, usually doubting it. These are the top 50 rated lives and OL cards after the 50th pack was ripped earlier today. The only thing I did with the team was, 2 or 3 times a day, spend 10-15 minutes to rip packs, sell off doubles, click the AI to organize. That would cover both Freedonia and the Memphis Chicos, my other auto-pilot OL team-in-waiting. One other thing. On Sunday morning, I notice that Freedonia had a bunch of Orioles, so I spent 300-400 PP for the Harold Baines. I had to buy only like eight cards. I would then spend another hour tweaking Port Ruppert, checking the AH, and entering each of the teams in tournaments, probably getting them each into about a hundred from the start until now. I also took off a day from it and gave each of my team's around a hour at Challenge mode. They each got one. Of course, and trust me, I am not making this up, Freedonia's was a gold, which turned into my only gold double, so far, a live 88 that sold for 1600 PP. With the current state of the pandemic, my other pursuits that took me from OL will be temporarily away, so I'll have way more time than I thought for OL (and, sorry in advance, per chance to write). That being the case, Freedonia might not be more than another week away. Unless this dumb and dumber luck doesn't stop. That I'll ride. It crossed my mind for a split second that I could just make Freedonia my main team, or even exchange the team names, but it just didn't sit right. Port Report is the only remaining original team name, and it would have felt false to "not dance with one that brung me." Besides, for me this is more about the nostalgia of building with players I watched and read about growing up, until I lost interest in baseball in the early 2000's. I don't even know who these guys are today, although Freedonia's changing that a bit for the good guys. I like winning, but I love bad puns, making hideous and silly graphics, and interacting with the great bunch we have here. Poor Memphis. I felt bad for them this morning. and spent over an hour and simmed the '27 Yanks to four straight titles with nothing getting awarded. I finally got frustrated and stopped. In the afternoon, I did a quick maintenance on PT to get the teams into their allotment of tournaments. I had a half hour to kill before a late lunch, so I fired up a new historical, switched to the '08 Athletics for variety. They finished 7th the first year, and in 3rd, 15 games behind in '09. Wonder of wonders, the game still kicked out a pack. I felt better for the Chicos, I think you can guess what's coming next. I had left the computer to get a drink, just after I finished signing the Athletics a few free agents. I truly did not notice that I had never logged onto the Memphis account, and, of course, the pack went to Freedonia. They only got a live silver, a live bronze, an OL bronze, and an OL iron, though. Poor, poor Memphis. They have had much more typical pack luck, and will clearly be the runt of the litter when they finally show up. |
Sorry, didn't go rip the packs.
I got called away for a bit and forgot to hit reply. Well, at least I didn't re-hit preview and kill it like I too often do.
By the way, perhaps one of the AH mavens can check my math, but I think the Liberation Front has got about 35,000, maybe 40,000 coming from the sale of the lives I've pictured. I may save the other bronze and iron to pop into a tournament now and then. If that's the case, they'll stay on auto pilot and until they can land me a Willie Mays. |
I said I wouldn't, but ...

Given the current situation, other responsibilities and avocations have been locked down and out. Therefore I had the time for this. Hopefully, when I again lose the time for it, someone else will be so used to seeing it they'll pick it up.
It would also be nice for other members to know that anyone who wants to, can do them. If there's a volunteer, I will gladly step aside. All that said, the Asheboro Road Dogs, an original member from year 2, set the early pace in OL R92. The PT standings are also attached. |
I’m no math wizard, but I find it difficult to believe Annandale can be 8-9 in OL play when our record is 20-7 overall!

This is why OL is so nice. I did indeed leave in some of last year's losses on the books (and they were from a different team that had been in that cell). These are now updated through the first sim of the day.

I've got stone standings at the end of the day.

The Seniorist of Moments
If I had any shame I wouldn't tell this story on myself, but it's too damned funny not to share.
As I've too often said, nostalgia is something that draws me into PT. Now, I didn't bother with the collections at all last year, didn't even give 'em a look. I was too busy trying to fix my Mundy mess. Well this time, when I saw that two of the players were Eddie Plank and Chuck Klein, I decided that the first mission to pull ten cards with Port Ruppert was the one I would sort of chase as I built the team. For the Mundys, it turned to be the old Philadelphia Athletic, Ed Plank. So, whenever I finished a non-live AH scan, I'd do a quick AH for the Oakland Athletics, for quick ending auctions, but mostly using buy now for the cheaper cards, and, if the end time was no more than 10 minutes, throwing in a last minute bid for a pricier card. I knew I was overpaying a bit, but I figured I might be able to get it for 5,000 or so, and I would be happy to pay a 20% mark-up for Eddie Plank. A little back story is needed here. Back in the mid-60's, and even into the 70's, when were "too hip" for it, a group of us would play stickball nearly every day when we were kids to adolescents, and then on week-ends into our late teens. One guy had a big picnic table in his backyard and we'd play his Strat-O-Matic baseball game. After a year, we all pitched in to buy some Strat-O-Matic oldtimer sets. After that, we'd draft the cards onto teams and play out a few seasons a summer, even keeping stats for many of them. There were always at least four of us, but we had gotten as high as 8 league members on occasion. My, did those cards get dog-eared. Two players I always drafted first, and I could always get them, were Eddie Plank and Chuck Klein. We lived in New York, and of course, the Babe always went first, with Walter Johnson second, and Cy Young third, with Cobb or Hornsby or Gehrig, etc. No matter when I picked I took Plank first,, even skipping Ruth, and because we reversed the order each round, get Klein after him, but usually in a later round. His card was not in the top ten, so there were some I wouldn't pass up for him. It struck my funny bone that they played for different Philadelphia teams, which I didn't know ever had two teams, and that helped spark my love for reading baseball lore. Back to the main story. When I saw that they both were in collections, I decided on the race to ten, and then a slow, couple of week addition to the team. Yeah, right! I was happy that Plank's Athletics won the race to ten. In retrospect, that set the stage for tonight's sad senior-itis saga. It was pure nostalgia-driven excess that got me to the point where I lost my patience and was around 4,000 PP into it with three cards in the 70's to go. You should see what those cards go for. I set a strict limit of 1500, then 1800, and finally 2000 for the three. Until this afternoon, I couldn't budge on any of them. The cheapest combined price was always 2400 or more. And, for the past three or four days, I've showed the same steely discipline I showed last year with the Cy Young card. Time for a brief turn in Chuck Klein's direction. If you read last night's tale, you know how sorry I feel for the terrible pack luck of my Memphis Chicos. I wanted to something nice for them because they are on the Asylum Keepers log-in name, who were my only team to win an OL crown last year. This year, their one piece of really good luck was to pack an Aaron Nola card. That was a sign (to me) that the baseball gods were smiling down in the Memphis sky. They had also pulled two of the 70's and three 60's Phillies. I was actually disciplined this time and got the card for around 4200, and still was able to save the Nola to sell. Chuck Klein joined the Chicos for this season. Just one more tiny bit of set up. For the more than a week, I would type both the city and nickname together in the search box. Why? I dunno, for some dumb old man reason? Finally, I got smart to myself and just started typing in the city alone. For the past three days, I got continually disappointed by the numbers that typing "Oakland" was getting, and raising my budget, yet still not able to buy any of the three I lacked. Typing "Philadelphia" brought such joyful numbers and I even saved the Nola. Which brings us to this afternoon. I was just ending a brief PT session and was going to head downstairs to play a board game with the family. I clicked on "2010 Live" in the drop down, typed in "70" as the low price, typed in the city name, clicked "end time asc." and hit search, just as one of my sons called to me that they were ready. I walked to the top of the stairs called out, "Be right there!" I walked back to the computer, intending to just exit the game and go play. Then I saw the screen full of names in white, with buy now prices I couldn't believe! Without a second glance I bought three cards for a total of 1750 PP (!), 250 (!) under my budget at close to the 20% mark-up I could live with! And the Port Ruppert Mundys got - three Philadelphia Phillie cards to use in silver tournaments. Because the only player that will appear as a duplicate on one of OL teams is Willie Mays, the best ever. Just feels right. |

The Memphis Chiccos are actually the progeny of the Terra Incognita Rustlers, which is rather serendipitous since the Rustlers really had by far the worst luck of the three last year.
It is those currently prodigious pack pullers, the Freedonia Liberation Front who are using the log-in for Kid_Heckett, the director of the Asylum Keepers. I changed because I had just watched Duck Soup and happened across the Marxian logos when looking through the folder for the Rustlers and Keepers. I'm beginning to lean toward bringing them back with new logos, a la Port Ruppert. With all the gaming going on around here today, there wasn't much pack earning or opening. Memphis won two and bought one, pulling two OL bronze and an OL iron. Getting swept by the Transylvania Impalers at home didn't help their earnings. Freedonia had almost 5,000 PP and 2 packs, but I'm gonna let the PP build up until I can get a decent estimate of how close they are to a Willie Mays. I'm going to sell only the silver and above, so it's gonna take a few more weeks until they get the 100,000 in value it will take to get the only one I've seen. If they get any kind of Willie, even last year's New York Mutts one, they'll join. Of course, if they pack one, they're in. Speaking of their two packs from today. The first was a live bronze and 5 live iron. Their second is attached. It's almost freaking me out. |
And one more time...
Port Ruppert bought three live silver Phillies, but at a good price.
|
Whalers start off with a scorching 10-0 record, then settles down to an 18-25 record since. Picked up 84 Tony Oliva on Monday and has been paying dividends. My pitching needs attention. With points dribbling slowly in, will have to stair-step with 1-2 player upgrades at a time per week.
BTW: anyone know how to change my banners to the PT21 teams? |

Decided to stay with last year's names for my two other teams, for their return to OL. The cruise-control, pack pull approach seems to be working out, in terms of avoiding buying packs for Port Ruppert. Only gave in once. Of course, there's no cure for dumb stuff I do, and have chronicled here a little.
I've decided that if one them pulls, or can afford, a Willie Mays, I'll make them compliant that week. Of course, I hope Port Ruppert gets the first. If the pack mania continues for Asylum, who knows? Hmm, wait. Just for the heck of it, I stopped typing and checked for a Willie Mays. The only one extant in the game was a 99 with an opener of like 199,000. I clicked back here and realized I forgot to check the buy now. When I clicked back it was gone. So I guess you have to be well-laden with PP, and have good timing. So please welcome back, eventually, the Asylum Keepers and Terra Incognita Rustlers. |

Love your new Asylum Keepers logo  |
Stanley thanks for sharing those great stories about your baseball heroes.
I'll just share a little bit : my first and fondest baseball memories when growing up were playing Strat-O-Matic. I grew up in Northern Va and rooted for the Senators (briefly). I first purchased SOM in 1970 - the reason I know this is 100% accurate is that I still have some of the 1969 cards with me. I recally having the best time with the '69 Senators and my favorite player, Frank Howard. 69 was the year he hit 48 homers but finished second to Killebrew for the homer race. I played that game so much I wore those cards down. I purchased the cards again in 71 but I believe that's the year they added the lefty/righty splits on the back of the card. That was a great new addition. I loved SOM so much I took a 2x3 poster board and made a standings board for my league - the teams, their records, and the games behind values were all on little pieces of posterboard that I'd insert into slits in the main poster. So I'd update the poster every day after playing the games. I'd play every game by hand, more or less fairly, recording the game on the scoresheets. Once a week I'd collate the stats for each team on a sheet of paper. I'd then go through the stats for the teams and hand assemble a leaderboard page. It was a crazy amount of work. That was before calculators too, so I had to do all the calculations by hand. Nothing taught me how to estimate fractions like doing all those baseball stats week after week after week... Those were great days of a more innocent time, to be sure. Not sure I'd want to go back there but it's fun to think about them every now and then. |
Whilst editing signature, I also was able to link last year's team onto there for the "Banner on the wall"

Great stuff Charlatan! Remember the Dierker card, and the Belanger at short? Eddie Watt in the bullpen? Wasn't Messersmith's card sneaky good? The '69 set was the first I bought from my first real paycheck. The first season we played was earlier and was my friend's. Remember doing averages with a slide rule? Gotta run. Another lockdown board game marathon awaits. By the way, I'm using my Maury Wills as a "get tired" utility at second, so he stays trained and he's gotten up to 101. |
Night Owl Edition On Newstands Soon!
We finished up game play early tonight, so I checked in, to see there was one game left, I think. So I'll wait, put up the standings, and sleep in again. The Mundys cling to second in their division, despite a rough month, including 4-9 in the important race, with one home game against the Palolo Puppies, who greedily gobbled game one of the two-fer, 8-1, with Mike Morgan firing a complete-game gem, allowing a lone Mundy tally, just 4 hits, fanning 6 and no walks.
Should be playing the last one now. Update soon. By the way OMGpuppies, I notice that your abbreviation is now AH. Is that a kind of a nod to Aina Haina, or did you consider going with the 'Keets? |

Sierra leads the way in OL R92 as the All Star break is on the horizon. A little tired, so I didn't scan the schedule for highlights. Others are, of course, invited write stories in later editions.
One score that hit me as soon as I logged in was Palolo sweeping the second game of their short road series at Glorious Mundy Stadium, in dramatic fashion, pushing across four, 9th-inning, runs against Port Ruppert reliever Dyar Miller, winning 6-4. The Puppies became the first team to score against Miller this season, ending his streak of 31 straight scoreless appearances, and pinning him with his first blown save, after 20 straight successes. |
I noticed the Stone OL league is also with the BFF league this week. That's kind of fun; the two popular F2P leagues uniting for a bit.

Finally in the Fold

Sometimes you just gotta get off the damned treadmill, especially when your aging, nostalgia addled noggin keeps giving you foolish and impulsive schemes...and you keep jumping right on board with them.
I did it again. In a brand new dumb, no dumber, no dumbest way. Yesterday morning, I finally decided I was going to go 1700-1800 as the total outlay for the last two Oakland 70's cards to get the Eddie Plank I had turned into an obsession. I realized, after all my missteps, I was gonna have about 7,000 PP as my my final price (It's probably closer to 8,000, but I'm too embarrassed to figure it out. :o) Of course, I had a plan to make sure I was disciplined this time. I would be a bit more patient and check the AH, find a card with an end time at least a couple of hours away, and a buy now price 100 more than I wanted to pay, say 800 for a card I would pay 700 for. Then I would bid 799, and go about my day. I told myself that I would not be tempted, and vowed not to check on the card until the next day. I kept that pledge, setting in motion an event of the like that has been the hallmark of this twisted tale. I checked the AH and saw the cheaper of the two 70's left going off in like 6 hours, so I bid 799 on it and switched over to Terra Incognita to open a pack they'd won, before going to play board games with my two sons. I pulled an 80 Pete Ward, let out a whoot (!), and went to play. Later, when I logged back into Port Ruppert, I just wanted to see if sims were done for the day, thinking I'd get the standings done before turning in. It was starting in a minute or two, so I quick checked the AH, saw a decent price, and put in a bid on the second card, proud I had put my clever plan of self discipline into action. I figured that, even if I lost one or both, I'd could just rinse and repeat, and over the course of a few days, I'd finally have my pitcher. While I was going through the team by team, I got the pop up that said I'd won the auction, Awwrright! The other auction still had hours to go, so I called it night. When I next logged into Port Ruppert, my PP were less than 100, which excited me! I was happy and relieved when I clicked on the collections tab, scrolled down to Oakland and WTF?? How could there be 25 of 26 cards? Damn, I figured, just my luck. Something went wrong with the server, and now I would have to wait for the card. I was pretty sure that I could put it in on the bug report forum and they could fix it. You probably have already figured out what I saw when I check my transactions. Yes, I did it. Bid twice on the same card. And won them both. It was so ridiculous, I couldn't do anything but laugh at myself. I put the double up for auction, with the buy now set to cover the cost of the more expensive bid. Thankfully, it sold in less than an hour, while I was still playing. I immediately went to the AH to find a buy now that my 987 PP would cover, and, thankfully, found a player name that was NOT in red, plunked down 900, vowing never to chase the AH again. At least not without adult supervision. I doubt I'll forget this hilarious fiasco. Think about this. How well do you remember the details of a long ago trip or event where everything went smoothly? Then think about the times when something went humorously haywire. I bet if you try, you can remember the smallest things and you'll be smiling. Thank you if you have read this far. I hope you enjoyed a look at the inner workings of the Port Ruppert brain trust. Just don't begin to expect any further secrets on player acquisition to be revealed. I can't imagine I could be this scatter brained again. Or could I? |

Coney Island sits barely atop the tight bunch, that's wide open. With two more days of sims to go, you can probably extend the list of contenders to an even dozen.
Aside to Edster. Your team name gave me a chuckle because it made me think of a particular species of fish one might see back in the old days of fishing off the jetties, or the beaches in the polluted waters off Brooklyn and Staten Island. |

Just to clarify I did name the team (which is a carryover from an APBA league) for the cult classic movie-not the infamous white fish :) |
Boomerangs had some decent pack luck this week. Got a challenge pack which included a diamond Aroldis Chapman. Sold it on the AH for about 5K.
Used a couple K to get Bullet Joe Bush (87), sank the rest into some packs and got Historical Legend Corey Kluber Peak (96). Gave the all Bronze starting rotation some much needed support! |
It’s a whole new year however Annandale has started their traditional late season swoon right on schedule! I want to murderate everyone of those bozos.
Ironically, the worst thing they did was start out super hot. Because it gave me high expectations. However, even though this is the rookie league, many OL teams are pretty stacked so nobody should have expected an easy go of it.. |
Hartford Ct: The Whalers are pleased to announce the addition of 82-rated Gold Max Scherzer. As a result, Johnny Antonelli was sent to the minors. "It was a tough choice to send down a great pitcher who gave the fans their first ever no-hitter," the Whalers manager was quoted saying. This should solidify a promising rotation, joining Tom Seaver, Teddy Higuera, ace Rick Waits and Dennis Rasmussen.

I'd like to join back up after a fun run in PT20 with this group. I'm in rookie on the two teams i'd like to join with, and will be promoted on both. The team names are Kansas Rangers, and Kansas Bombers. The usernames are Maxfire5_ and Maxfire5__ respectively.
