October 2298 - News and Notes - October 31
Forgive me for this one!
https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1586093507 Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kawolski 31 October 2298 - Lacy Considers Post-Baseball Career Diamond City Swatters all-CBO right fielder Wayne Lacy took a diplomatic trip on behalf of the CBO to assist in the Nuka World League tryouts. Upon his return from tryout clinics at the various parks around Bradberton, Lacy came back with one park on his mind: Kiddie Kingdom. "I could see myself working there after I retire," Lacy said. "I had more fun at the Kiddie Kingdom than anywhere else." Asked what was most appealing about the park made for youngsters, Lacy had one response: the clowns. On a day devoted to dressing up, Lacy said he already purchased his costume for a party at the Dug Out Inn: one of the painted clown costumes of Kiddie Kingdom. "I would love to be a clown," he mused. "I mean, I know I have killer good looks, but seeing the kids laughing at the sight of clowns gave me more joy than I can know. They have great names, too. Just at Kiddie Kingdom I met two guys who moved from Diamond City to be clowns there at the park. They didn't tell me their real names, but their clown names were Pogo and Patches. I see myself as a wise old clown with a pocket full of old-world change. I could be something like 'Pennywise.' I'll think about it, but that sounds like a clown with a real hunger for entertaining children." Lacy has no current plans to pursue his clown-wearing future other than tonight's Swatters-centric Halloween party in Diamond City at Scarlett Miles' Dugout Inn. "Don't get me wrong," Lacy said. "I'm only 20, so I hope to have a lot more baseball in me. I'll probably end up settling down at some point, too, so there may not be much time for honking my horn and taking perfectly preserved pies to my face. There are a few championships to win in Diamond City." Asked what his teammates would think about his future career, Lacy said if they disapproved he would just squirt them with a lapel hubflower. |

2298 CBO Rookie Draft - Analysis
Top 5
1-1 Roxbury - SP Eugene Gym Skills: 3-pitch repertoire, with his fastball able to overwhelm hitters when matched with his changeup and knuckle curve. Needs to work on his movement on his off-speed pitches, but in time he will be able to place those pitches anywhere he wants to. Will be on a fast track towards being an ace in the CBO. Personality: Dedicated teammate, willing to take on a leadership role. Takes responsibility for his own mistakes. Doesn't get down on missed pitches. May need a good coach to help his progression since he can get locked in to bad habits if not corrected. 1-2 Atom - SP Scruffy Taguchi Skills: 4-pitch repertoire. All of his pitches have movement, so he needs to work on getting that movement above average to be successful in the CBO. His movement in youth league play led to lots of ground balls, so he needs a solid infield behind him. His splitter will help him strike out lots of batters. Needs to work better on placement to increase those possibilities. May become an ace, may become a #2 pitcher. Likely to succeed. Personality: Wants the ball. Will work harder than almost anyone else. Takes charge and pushes people to get better. Highly coachable and likely to add more pitches to his repertoire through a desire to learn. 1-3 County Crossing - 3B Ajani Peacock Skills: Considered the most talented player in the draft. Listed as a third baseman, but limited side-to-side agility may make him a 1B in the CBO. Strange thing is he is one of the faster straight-line runners in the draft, so he could be a base stealer. Great eye and bat control means that he will eventually find himself batting 2nd or 3rd in a CBO lineup. Personality: Workout warrior-one of few players looking to build strength over agility. 1-4 Jamaica Plain - LF Gunner Eyesocket Skills: Great bat that could make him a future Triple Crown prospect. Puts the bat on the ball, but sometimes refuse to wait for the right pitch. High power potential, hitting a lot of homers and deep balls in youth league action. Good outfielder with a strong arm but slow. Will play in the corner outfield only, but should be on the field. Catches everything in his range and keeps runners from advancing when the ball comes his way. Personality: Introverted and keeps to himself. Off-putting to teammates sometimes with shrugs and short answers. Coaches do not give him a lot of one-on-one attention because of their own discomfort around him. 1-5 Vault 81 - 1B Chase Doctorman Skills: Great bat, liability on defense. One of the most patient batters, will not swing at a pitch not in his zone. Sometimes that means watching third strikes, but often it means tearing the cover off the ball. Has the highest power potential, but likely to be a .300 hitter, too. Personality: Steely personality. Does not stand out in a crowd and will not commit to anyone. He is cool, slow, and methodical, which keeps him neutral on the emotional scale. Nordhagen Beach Draft Grade: D Analysis: There were better players to take at every pick. We don't understand two catchers in the first two rounds when one of those would have been more than enough. First-round pick Dopey Meanie is the only one with legitimate future talent to make the CBO. The others are probably career BMUers. Rd 1 (#22) - C Dopey Meanie Skills: Good bat control and avoids strikeouts. Puts the bat on the ball, but does not have a lot of power. Decent catcher skills, though needs to work on throwing out more runners. Has potential to be a future starter but more likely to be a career backup in the CBO. If they needed a player with potential only, David Yellowsky picked behind him and Bottlecap Go could have a steadier path to the CBO despite a different position. Personality: Introverted and hesitant to call pitches. Needs to work on confidence when wearing the catcher's gear. Not going to take responsibility for mistakes but will take credit when things go right. Rd 2 (#22) - C Benji Masterson Skills: Waits for his pitches, but swings for the fence too often rather than adjusting for situation. Has plus-power potential which could make him a good pinch hitter in key situations. Not likely to be a top catcher in the league. Has a decent arm but not from a squatting position. Not likely to be CBO quality. Strange choice since two catchers taken just three and four picks later--Press Earthquake and Rumple Skinstilt--have much more potential. Personality: Daydreams too often, sometimes while on the field. Coaches moved him to catcher to keep his mind on baseball when playing. Often responds that he is imagining what will happen. Needs coaches to push him to improve, won't do it on his own terms. Rd 3 - No pick Rd 4 (#22) - SP Lackadaisical Macnamara Skills: Was not expected to be drafted. Has three pitches, two of them fastballs. May need to switch to a relief pitcher to have a shot at the CBO. However, unless he has the right coaching, his pitches may not get much better than they are now. Gave up too many home runs, even in youth leagues, because he often pitches the ball right down the pipe. Personality: Questions about his love for the game. Willing to step on the mound but complains about other workouts like running and weightlifting. Needs an in-your-face coach rather than a hands-off one. Nicknamed "Lackadaisical" by his coaches for a reason. Rd 5 (#11) - SP Jaden Chavis Skills: Has three pitches but relies on fastball more than others, making him likely to move to the bullpen as a setup man or closer. Best ability is keeping runners close to the base to prevent stolen bases and extra bases on hits. Needs a lot of work on how he delivers pitches at a higher level. Not likely to make it to the CBO. Personality: Even personality that does not have ups and downs. Strikes out a batter and then waits for the ball from the catcher. Gives up a home run and then waits for the ball from the umpire. (#22) - 2B Paul Warwick Skills: Potential lies in his defensive skills, which is his only path to the CBO. Does not have a strong enough arm so bound to be a 2B or switch to outfield. Has raw speed that helps him on the base paths. Not a good hitter but can work a walk. Does not swing at poor pitches but not likely to do much with good ones. Will have to fight for his life to get any play time at the BMU level. Could benefit from a second level of minors. Personality: Not related to Wally Warwick but does try to copy him, including adopting Wally's family name. Changed name when he was playing youth league ball and Wally was his mentor at a baseball camp. Kind of a follower but will stick to the rules when pressed. Studies the game but needs to improve physically. Fort Hagen Draft Grade: B+ Analysis: No top talent but good picks in the first round, third round, and fourth round. Whether or not any of their picks make the CBO, they have multiple players that could make it in time on a talented team that may be the favorites to win the NCA in 2299. Draft picks definitely restocked the CIT Ruins Refractors roster in 2299 and beyond. Rd 1 (#16) - RF Gargoyle Falcone Skills: Taken where projected. Good bat potential and already ready for playing outfield in the CBO. One of the best defensive players in the draft. Not quite fast enough to play CF but has the tools to be a defensive player of the year in RF. Energetic both in the field and at the plate. May not have all the tools to be a great hitter. Won't be a home run hitter which is considered a plus at RF. Likely to be a career backup but his defense will get him in games often in low-scoring affairs. If bat improves, definitely CBO material. Personality: Curious person who bombards coaches with questions. Bugs coaches but also makes them happy to know he appreciates their knowledge. Seems like a future coach. Unassuming. Rd 2 - No pick Rd 3 (#16) - 3B Yip-Yip Author Skills: Defensive skills are pretty good with a good glove made for being a corner infielder. Bat control is not very good. Will wait for his pitches but swings and misses way too much. Despite being a big guy, not good power which makes him a liability at the plate for his team, probably preventing him from being CBO-ready anytime soon. Personality: Extremely confident, sometimes to his own demise. Unwavering in his position. Stubborn which puts his coachability into question. Approaches life in an all-or-nothing manner. Lots of friends, lots of enemies. (#19) - CF Beachy Masters Skills: A 3rd-round steal--was expected to go in the middle of the 2nd round. Needs to work on his bat, but he will be a good OF at whatever level he plays at. Should focus all energies on bat control and seeing off-speed pitches. Had high number of hits in youth league play but almost exclusively on fast balls. On the base paths, he can pick up a few steals and extend the bases on singles and doubles, making him a good top of the order player in his future if he can improve his contact potential. Does sometimes take too many risks on extra bases and misses the coach's stop signal sometimes. Personality: In control of his own destiny. Seems destined to succeed, though that depends on if potentials increase. Never greedy. Shares everything with friends and strangers. Rd 4 (#2) - SP Joe Hanson Skills: 3-pitch repertoire but more confident in only two of them, which means he will likely move to the bullpen exclusively. Could be a middle man in the bullpen and emergency starter if necessary. Stuff is decent but pitches lack movement, even his slider, and he misses the strike zone too often. Will have to see how he fares against BMU batters to better project his future. Best guess is BMU reliever at best. Personality: Moved a lot with his family makes him adaptable to different places. WIll adjust well if circumstances change. Should fit in most organizations without issue. Won't be a character concern. (#10) - SP Unrivaled Grossman Skills: Another steal, but will change position. Highly confident in slider and fastball, but changeup is seldom used. Will be moved to the bullpen unless he develops more pitches. If a bullpen, potential future closer in CBO due to great stuff, high-speed pitches, and the ability to paint the corner. A bit on the lanky side, so needs to put on more weight. Some teams passed probably for long-term durability concerns since he had a few arm problems in youth leagues that limited his time two out of the last three years. Personality: Feels alive in pressure situations. Considered joining Brotherhood of Steel but wanted to try out baseball first. Mental fortitude. 5 (#16) - RF Ian Motherson Skills: Has the potential to develop a decent .250/15/50 bat but not at all likely. Needs some kind of deus ex machina to make it happen. Lucky to be picked at all because there are some slightly less talented players that are hungrier than he is. Does not have the glove to give coaches excuses to play him in the outfield or first base. Likely to be a pinch hitter in the BMU at best for at least a few years unless his bat booms. Personality: Clowns around too much and wants to be the center of attention. Annoys coaches because of his low work ethic. Might not have the drive to ever thrive in his life. Doesn't ask much of others but also doesn't ask much of himself. |
Nordhagen Beach looks like they struck out with their draft. Yeesh. GM Brendan Kneecapped is young and foolish, I suppose. Based on potentials, I just don't understand any of their picks! There was much better potential talent at every pick. Oberland and Goodneighbor benefited from the strange picks.
On the other hand, Fort Hagen won the 3rd and 4th rounds based on player potential. None of their guys are guaranteed to make it, but I would bet on five of their guys over any of the Party Boys' picks. In case you two who follow most closely want the competitive angle, the Silver Shroud look to be building for the long-term. Nordhagen Beach may still be more talented at the CBO level, but Fort Hagen may be there to stay at the top. |
Nice draft overview, I always appreciate the level of detail. Games are important, but stuff like this is arguably more important.
|
Ouch, doesn't look like Kneecapped's finest hour! I believe there is still significant improvement in a number of the players already on the Party Boys roster, so I'm hopeful about the coming season, but we need to be looking a little further ahead. Maybe Brendan has some juicy trades up his sleeve???

OK, so my organizational skills are suspect. Combed through almost every page of my dynasty and cannot find the original story I am looking for. Did I never post and it is all in my head as a memory? Is Ug-Qualtoth affecting my mind in the real world? What if I am not even in the real world? I mean, with all the advances in civilization, a worldwide pandemic is impossible, right? This is not possible!

Your organization skills are probably still better than mine. My Dynasty info sheets are inside my Football Manager Folder, which is inside my Star Trek Folder, which is inside my Dungeons and Dragons Folder, none of which are actually labeled as such but with cryptic acronyms that I'm sure made sense at the time but I no longer recall what they stand for now :D
But hey, if you can find some more writing you missed, I'm sure we'll all welcome it, even if it is a bit late in the timeline ;) |
Mysterious Stranger's Cache
A few months ago, Piper showed me an interesting feature in the Gunners Plaza (Galaxy News Network) that had a tracking system for all intraweb terminal transmissions. I have been monitoring a few "spots," including the Mysterious Stranger's bunker. It's obvious he has not been there for awhile because when I went to retrieve the holotape, I saw that the entry was still on the terminal. That means the Stranger would download the terminal entry onto a holotape and then put them into one of his lockers: 4 NEC, 3B SWCNV, 3A CC, 2 NWCNCR, 1 SWCNCR. That means he used to come here a lot. Where did he go? There were a few transmissions, but the one that arrived on his terminal most recently was dated 11.11.98. And it mentioned baseball. There is some strange coding, so I will translate it here as I understand it. I left symbols where I do not understand or know the correction:
Date: 11.11.98 Things are getting worse and worse with the NC%. People are being taken away for insurrection. Is this what they promised? There are desert troopers everywhere, but pockets of resistance are starting up. Baseball is happening but you can tell a few of the players are going through the motions. Some are just getting old, like La#ue. He had a down year. Gooseprings Prospect*&s in last place. No more Lucky. N% won it this year. The Scorpions beat the Mutants and N##ac beat the Bombers. Then Veg@s beat the Dinos in the final. It was a good series. 7 games. Khans missed this year. They were G!mo*rah before. Made playoffs 5 years before, won 3. Listened to recordings again. Had a dream last night and saw a calendar, 2021. What can it mean? What happened then? I must know! |

Mysterious Stranger's Cache

What is it about these random terminal entries at the Mysterious Stranger's bunker (lair???). I have no idea if I shared this one before, but it seems so familiar. So deja vu. And then the second one I downloaded onto my own holotape mentions Nate directly. What the hell is this all about? I don't know if I should be concerned or not. Dates are long ago, so time to investigate or entries of the log dead? Why are they in the Stranger's terminal now? Where are they coming from exactly?
Who is Jenny Murphy? 2080? She must be long dead now, right? But the iceman. It sounds like Nate. I mean, he was frozen in Vault 111 in 2080. Strange. Strange. Strange. What am I getting myself into here? Who is Minnie the Ghoul? I wonder if I nonchalantly visit The Slog and drop that name to Wiseman what his reaction would be. I'd better make a team, maybe get some bad*** to question Wiseman on my behalf. Don't want to get beat up and cast into a firepit at Saugus or something. |

Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kawolski 12 November 2298 - Assaultrons Hire OSA Scout from CBO Office The Easy Town Assaultrons have announced that they have hired 38-year-old Kyle Verrecchio as hitting coach. Verrecchio had been working as a scout for the CBO's OSA scouting department since late 2295. He is credited with finding Assaultrons' shortstop Matt Stoops, among other hitters outside the area south of Boston. Verrecchio had indicated he was interested in getting into coaching with a few ideas for changing the approach to hitting. It is yet to be determined if his approach will result in boom or bust results, but it is helpful he is coaching on the defending North Charles Association champions. 14 November 2298 - Howard Delegates Duties Nate Howard is hiring presidents for each of the associations of the CBO and BMU in case he needs to take a leave of absence. Howard has the ability to use the relay to travel around quickly using the Institute relay, but he has indicated he may need to leave the Commonwealth soon for various reasons. Howard named the following: Tyler Hinson – NCA President – formerly Oberland GM Tommy Lonegan – SCA President – Minutemen League Advisory Board Jun Long – CA President – Institute League Advisory Board Amelia Stockton – MA President – Bunker Hill Marketing Director Howard also appointed two daughters of owners to replace Lonegan and Long. Lucy Abernathy, daughter of Abernathy Adamantium owner Blake Abernathy, will take Jun Long's place on the Institute League Advisory Board. June Warwick, daughter of Warwick Mirelurks owner Roger Warwick, will take Lonegan's place on the Minutemen League Advisory Board. |

Today in the CBO News and Notes - Reports from around the Commonwealth by Nat Wright-Kawolski 23 November 2298 - T-51s Cut Pitcher After Money Scheme The Oberland T-51s have announced that minor league pitcher Josh Bum was cut today after discovering a money scheme that stole hundreds of caps from fellow teammates and people around the Fiddler's Green Trailer Estates settlement. He has also been arrested and ordered to pay back all victims over time. The caps were not recovered. Bum joined the T-51s organization in February of this year after a CBO-led player tryout. With the Fiddler's Green T-60s, he was 4-13 with a 7.73 ERA in 20 starts. He appeared in 21 total games, allowing 81 earned runs and 151 hits with 71 walks and 29 strikeouts in 94.1 innings. Bum will need to serve a 50-day sentence, and then he will need to donate 75% of all income to Fiddler's Green mayor Marryat Gaiman, who will distribute the money to all those who signed a victims' agreement. If Bum cannot find work in the CBO, he will be assigned to a job at one of the quarries around the Commonwealth so that his caps earned can be tracked. 27 November 2298 - Shroud's Miller Wants More Responsibility Fort Hagen Silver Shroud 2B Mark Miller was ecstatic his team made another step towards a championship, but he is still hungry for a title. Miller today announced that he would be spending his winter with a travel team looking to up his skills. Miller always had the reputation for being a player with a high work ethic who puts in the long hours necessary to succeed. In 2298, he hit .356 (7th in the NCA), going 154 for 433 in 109 games with 27 doubles, six triples, six home runs, 58 runs, and 57 RBI. He also stole nine bases. "There are players you worry about if they're going to 'get' it," Shroud manager Mark Andersen said, "and then there's Mark. He not only gets it, but he puts it to use. I don't know if we would be nearly as good without him." Chosen in the 4th round (#95 overall) in the 2296 Inaugural Draft, the 19-year-old won't make OSA's Top 20 Position Players list, but he has had a stellar three-year run. He has a career batting average of .346 with a career WAR of 6.2. "Mark's got a lot of friends around the organization," Andersen said. "Everytime he's up to bat now, everybody shouts out, 'It's Miller time!' I think that's pretty catchy." 27 November 2298 - Noob Arrested in Easy Town Participating in a Zeta Invaders tournament in an arcade near Easy City Downs, Sunshine Tidings Chemists' Josh Noob was not happy with his loss. The Chemists 2B apparently snapped, screaming, "I'm a winner! I'm tired of losing! Why all the losing?" before destroying several terminals in the Alley Arcade. Noob was promptly arrested and ordered to purchase replacement terminals for the business. Because the rest of the tournament was canceled due to lack of available terminals, Noob also owes every player's entry fee as compensation to the arcade. He is booked in East Boston Police Station. Said Alley Arcade owner Colt Crackerjack, "He wasn't that good. I don't know why he would get upset. I could understand being in the final and a mistake costs you the championship, but this guy lost in the first wave of the first round. I mean, it was like he never played Zeta Invaders before. "I know one thing for sure. He's lucky he did that at my place and not at the Downs because he might be wearing a lead necklace right now instead of handcuffs." Noob had a down year in 2298, losing his starting position with the Chemists. He had started in 108 of 112 games going into 2298, but started only 11 of 61 total appearances. On the season, he batted a career low .220 with five doubles, two home runs, 13 runs, and 13 RBI. Rookie 2B Justin Zent took over the second base duties due to better defensive skills, starting 97 games and batting .219. Noob was not available for comment. |
