Trying to even up the series in New York. Today the Mets are pitching Sid Fernandez (6-5, 3.27). The Giants have Frank Viola (7-7, 3.45). I have gone only 9 for 59, or .153, against El Sid. Today I am hitting sixth, moving ahead of the slumping Ryan Klesko. Mark Lewis led of the 2nd with a home run! Then I came up and hit a foul pop, caught by Gary Gaetti at 3rd. Giants lead 1-0 I took care of a Junior Ortiz grounder for the 1st out in the bottom of the 2nd. I then came up with one out in the 4th and grounded out to Joe Millette at short. In the 5th Timothy McKercher scored on a Robby Thompson single and then Ruben Sierra hit a two run homer. Giants lead 4-0 I came up with one out in the 6th and flew out to Lenny Dykstra in centre. The Mets got on the board in the bottom of the 6th when Wally Joyner crossed on a Cal Ripken Jr. single. We turned a Priske - Thompson - Davis double play to get Ripken and Gaetti to end the threat. Giants lead 4-1 Ortiz led off the bottom of the 7th with a home run. Giants lead 4-2 I made a great play on a Joyner grounder for the 1st out in the bottom of the 8th. I led off the 9th, now facing Steve Crawford. I walked. Stolen base #45. WIth one out I was thrown out trying to steal 3rd. Bobby Thigpen came in to pitch the 9th. It did not go well. The first four batters reached, though one was thrown out trying to steal. Matt brought in Darryl Scott with one out and the bases loaded. Darryl got the 2nd out but then walked Greg Vaughn, scoring pinch hitter Dave Magadan. But he got the 3rd out, leaving us with a 4-3 win. I went 0 for 3 with a walk, a stolen base, and a caught stealing. After the game they announced a trade! Two minor leaguers, including former teammate Joel Chimelis along with Mark Yockey went to the Tigers for veteran backstop, Rick Cerone. It seems odd to pick up a free agent-to-be when out by 11 games, but Rick should give us a boost. He seems like a fun guy, as well. |
July 17th, 1991
It is the rubber match in Shea and the Mets are pitching Dwight Gooden (8-6, 2.89). The Giants are going with Bruce Ruffin (10-5, 3.46). I have gone 15 for 56, or .268, against Gooden. I am hitting seventh. I caught a Lenny Dykstra fly for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 1st. I then came up with two out in the 2nd and popped up to Gary Gaetti at 3rd. In the 4th Cal Ripken Jr hit a solo homer to open the scoring. Mets lead 1-0 I led off the 5th by grounding out to Wally Joyner at 1st. I returned the favour on a Joyner grounder to end the inning. I came up in the 7th with one out, pinch runner Tim Criswell on 3rd, and Ryan Klesko on 1st. I struck out. We did not score. Tim stayed in to play 1st and Craig Greenback took over at 3rd. I took care of a Gooden grounder for the final out of the inning. Things turned around for us in the 8th. Rance Mulliniks led off with a pinch hit single before moving to 2nd on a sac bunt by Robby Thompson and scoring on a Harold Baines single. With two out, Harold scored on a single by Craig and then Ruben Sierra scored on a single by Ryan. Then I struck out again. Giants lead 3-1 Mark Ross took the ball for us in the bottom of the 8th. I handled a grounder from pinch hitter Dave Magadan for the 2nd out. Our lead vanished as Rex De La Nuez and Ripken scored on a single by Greg Olson. Then Gaetti scored on an error by Robby - his second error of the inning. I took care of a Tito Navarro grounder to end it. Mets lead 4-3 And that was then game. Two errors by Robby cost us the whole thing. He feels terrible. So do I as I went 0 for 4. On our travel day to Montreal, we found out Tim Criswell was not coming with us. He was sent to Phoenix to make room for Rick Cerone who would be joining us in Canada. I am as cold as ice. |
July 19th, 1991
We are in Montreal and I am hoping our trip to Canada will help me jumpstart my slumping bat. Also, Rick Cerone has joined the team. Today the Expos are pitching Alex Fernandez (3-14, 4,48). The Giants have John Burkett (6-11, 5.33). I have never faced Fernandez. I am slumping so much Matt has moved me down to the 8th spot. I am not okay with this, but it is on me. I made a routine play on a Billy Hatcher grounder for the 1st out in the bottom of the 1st. I came up in the 2nd with two out, Mark Lewis on 2nd, and Ryan Klesko on 1st. I legged out an infield single to load the bases. We all moved up, including Mark scoring, on a wild pitch by Fernandez. Ryan and I were left on. Giants lead 1-0 I took care of a Chris Sabo grounder for the 1st out in the bottom of the 2nd. I took care of a Fernandez grounder for the final out in the 3rd. (9 up, 9 down.) I came up in the 4th with two out and Rick Cerone on 1st. Alvaro Espinoza at short caught my pop. The Expos tied it up in the 4th when Milt Cuyler scored on a Sabo double. Game tied 1-1 They then took the lead in the 6th when Hatcher scored on a Cuyler single. Expos lead 2-1 I came up with one out in the 7th and grounded out to Espinoza. We got the lead back int he 8th when Ruben Sierra launched a two run bomb! Giants lead 3-2 With one out in the bottom of the 8th, Matt brought in Darryl Scott. I came up in the 9th with pinch hitter Bryce Bernadin on 3rd, Ryan on 1st, and Tom Henke on the mound. I grounded out, moving Ryan to 2nd. Bryce ended up scoring when Harold Baines walked with the bases loaded. Giants lead 4-2 Bobby Thigpen and Timothy McKercher took over as our battery for the bottom of the 9th. Things did not go well. Michael Urzendowski and pinch hitter Sammy Sosa both scored on a one out double by Jose Offerman, tying the game back up. Then Offerman scored man two out single by Shane Mack, giving the Expos the 5-4 win. I went 1 for 4 with a single. Better than nothing, I guess. |
July 20th, 1991
After a disappointing loss yesterday, we are it again. Today the Expos are pitching Scott Erickson (4-6, 3.46). The Giants have Rick Sutcliffe (4-6, 4.43). I have gone 2 for 9 against Erickson and am still hitting eighth. We opened the scoring in the 2nd when Mark Lewis crossed on a Ryan Klesko sac fly. I came up with two out and lined out to Andres Santana at 2nd. Giants lead 1-0 We got another in the 3rd off a Robby Thompson home run. Giants lead 2-0 I came up next with two out in the 4th and grounded out back to the pitcher. In the sixth Ruben Sierra scored on an error and Alvin Davis scored on a single by Ryan. While I was at the plate, Ryan was caught stealing to end the inning. Giants lead 4-0 The Expos got on the board int eh bottom of the 6th when Shane Mack hit a solo homer. Giants lead 4-1 I led off the 7th by dumping one into left for a single. Stolen base #46. I went to 3rd on a sac bunt by Rick. I was left there. I caught a Michael Urzendowski pop for the 1st out in the bottom of the 7th. Then Santana scored on a double by James Aylward. I took care of a Billy Hatcher grounder for the 3rd out. Giants lead 4-2 Mark Ross took he ball for us in the 8th. I handled a Mack grounder for the 2nd out behind him. But then Chris Sabo scored on a double by Alvaro Espinoza. Giants lead 4-3 I came up in the 9th with one out and Mike Henneman pitching. I grounded out to Aylward at 3rd. Bobby Thigpen took the bottom of the 9th. He successfully closed it out. I went 1 for 4 with a single and a stolen base. |
July 21st, 1991
It is the rubber match against the Expos. Montreal is throwing Chuck Finley (8-9, 3.51). The Giants have Frank Viola (8-7, 3.38). I have gone 7 for 36, or .194, against Finley. I am hitting eighth. Robby Thompson kicked things off for us with a solo homer in the 1st. Giants lead 1-0 I came up in the 2nd with one out and Rick Cerone on 2nd. I grounded out to Jose Oquendo at 2nd, moving Rick to 3rd. He stayed there. We got a couple more runs in the 3rd when Harold Baines and Robby scored on a Ruben Sierra double. Giants lead 3-0 I came up in the 4th with Ryan Klesko on 1st. I reached on an error by Alvaro Espinoza at short. Frank laid down a sac bunt that left both Ryan and me in scoring position. Harold walked, loading the bases. Harold was thrown out on a fielder's choice by Robby that scored Ryan and moved me to 3rd. I scored on a single by Ruben. Giants lead 5-0 In the bottom of the 4th I started a Priske - Thompson - Davis double play to get Bully Hatcher and Milt Cuyler. After that tough, Shane Mack scored on a Chris Sabo double. I took care of an Espinoza grounder to end the inning. Giants lead 5-1 I came up in the 5th with one out, Rick on 3rd, and Ryan on 1st. While I was at the dish, Ryan stole 2nd. After that, they gave me an intentional walk. Frank hit into a double play. I took care of a Hatcher grounder for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 5th, but James Aylward scored on the play. I caught. Cuyler pop to end the inning. Giants lead 5-2 Robby hit his second solo homer of the game in the top of the 6th. Giants lead 6-2 I next came up with two out in the 7th, now facing Wally Whitehurst. I grounded out to Espinoza. I made a nice grab on a liner by pinch hitter Sammy Sosa for the 1st out in the bottom of the 8th. After that, though, Sabo hit a three-run triple. Matt brought in Darryl Scott after that. Ac couple of batters later, Thomas Howard scored on a throwing error by Ryan in centre, and the game was tied. I caught an Aylward pop to hold it there. Game tied 6-6 I came up with one out in the 10th, now facing Tom Henke. I grounded out to Jose Oquendo at 2nd. Bobby Thigpen took the ball for us in the bottom of the 10th. I took care of a Mack grounder for the 2nd out. Bobby gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the 11th and Matt went to Mark Ross. I led off the 13th against Mike Henneman. I flew out to Cuyler in centre. Scott Service took the mound for us in the bottom of the 13th. With one out, Russ McGinnis hit a pinch hit, walk off home run. We lost, 7-6. I went 0 for 5 with a walk, a reached-on-error, and a run scored. We have a travel day to head home to face the Mets. ```````````````````````` After they are we got word that Joe Boever was back from AAA. Bryan HIckerson was sent down. Apparently both he and Bruce Ruffin are being shopped around. That's what happens when you are four games below .500. |
July 23rd, 1991
Home to face the Mets. They are pitching Dwight Gooden (9-6, 2.92). The Giants have Bruce Ruffin (10-5, 3.34). I have gone 15 for 60, or .250, against Gooden. I am hitting eighth. We opened the scoring in the 2nd when Alvin Davis scored on a Rick Cerone groundout. I came up with two out and Mark Lewis on 2nd. I grounded out to Gregg Jeffries at 3rd. Giants lead 1-0 In the 3rd, Harold Baines slugged a two run dinger. Giants lead 3-0 In the top of the 4th, Cal Ripken matched that, hitting his own two run blast. Giants lead 3-2 In the bottom half, Mark scored on a sac fly by Ryan Klesko. I then came up with two out and hit one down the right field line for a double. I was stranded. Giants lead 4-2 I took care of a Jeffries grounder for the 1st out in the 6th. With one out and one on in the 6th, Matt brought in Mike Scott. With two out, Chet Lemon singled home Lenny Dykstra. Giants lead 4-3 I led off the bottom of the 7th by flying out to Lemon in right. Joe Boever took the ball for us in the 8th. We widened the lead in the 8th. First Ruben Sierra scored on a single my Mark and then Mark scored on a single by Rick. Giants lead 6-3 Joe closed it out for us. I went 1 for 3 with a double. |
July 24th, 1991
We came him to win. Let's keep it going. Today the Mets are pitching Kevin Appier (11-5, 2.32). The Giants have John Burkett (6-11, 5.14). I have gone only 1 for 10 against Appier. I am hitting eighth. I came up with one out in the bottom of the 3rd and flew out to Lenny Dykstra in centre. Things went south in the 4th when John walked Junior Ortiz with the bases loaded. Then Greg Vaughn scored on a wild pitch. Mets lead 2-0 I came up with two out in the 5th and walked on four pitches. Stolen base #47. Rance Mullininks hit a pinch hit home run to tie the game. Game tied 2-2 Darryl Scott took the mound for us to start the 6th. The Mets got the lead right back when Dyksrta and Ortiz scored on a Tito Navarro single. Mets lead 4-2 Mike Scott took over for us in the 7th. I came up in the bottom of the 7th with one out and Ryan Klesko on 1st. I walked again. We tied it back up by both scoring on a two out double by Robby Thompson! Game tied 4-4 Joe Boever took the ball for us in the 8th. With one out in the 9th, Matt went to Bobby Thigpen. I led off the bottom of the 9th, now facing Rick Aguilera. I grounded out to Jeffries, now playing 1st. I caught a Rex De La Nuez pop for the first out in extras. I made a GREAT play on a Shawn Abner grounder to get Ortiz trying to score. Mark Ross took over on the mound for us in the 11th. I came up in the bottom of the 11th with two out, Craig Greback on 2nd, and Kevin Brown on the bump. I was given the intentional walk. It worked. We were left on. Scott Service took over for us in the 12th. In the bottom of the 12th, Craig led off with... a HOME RUN! WALK OFF! I went 0 for 2 with three walks, two runs scored, and a stole base. After the game, Joe Boever and Steve Stanicek were sent to Phoenix and Bryan Hickerson and Luis Medina were called up. |
July 25th, 1991
We are trying to finish the sweep. Today the Mets have Andy Benes (11-6, 2.47). The Giants are going with Rick Sutcliffe (5-6, 4.31). I have gone 4 for 16 against Benes. I am hitting eighth. Greg Vaughan led off the 2nd with a home run. Then Lenny Dykstra scored on a Tito Navarro single. I handled a Chet Lemon grounder for the 2nd out. Mets lead 2-0 I came up in the 3rd with Ryan Klesko on 1st. I walked. Rick laid down a sac bunt to move both of us up. Ryan tried to score on a Robby Thompson fly but was thrown out at home. I took care of a Dykstra grounder for the 2nd out in the 4th. In the 5th, Navarro scored on a Benes single. I took care of a Cal Ripken grounder for the 2nd out. Mets lead 3-0 In the 6th Wally Joyner and Dykstra scored on a Junior Ortiz double. Matt went to Scott Service after that. I took care of a Navarro grounder for the (what else?) 2nd out. Mets lead 5-0 I led off the bottom of the 6th by grounding out to Ripken at 2nd. Robby hit a solo homer that inning. Mets lead 5-1 Bryan Hickerson took over for us in the 8th. I made a really nice play with the bases loaded to gun down Vaughan at the plate for the 2nd out. But then Ortiz and Navarro scored on a Benes single. Mets lead 7-1 I came up in the bottom of the 8th with one out and Ryan on 1st. I singled up the middle, moving Ryan to 3rd, and going to 2nd on the throw. With two out we both scored on a single by Robby. Mets lead 7-3 Mike Scott was next on the mound for us but not he first play of the 9th, he left the game with a hamstring strain. Mark Ross was brought in to replace him. Mark gave up a double to Vaughan, scoring Mike Gallego. Mets lead 8-3 In the bottom of the 9th, Ruben Sierra scored on a sac fly by Ryan, but then I grounded out to end the game and we lost, 8-4. I went 1 for 3 with a single, a walk, and a run scored. A trade was announced after the game. We sent minor leaguer Rudy Pemberton to Cleveland for veteran swingman arm Don Robinson. He is another free agent after the season, like Rick Cerone. Management is treating us like we are still in this. We are two games blow .500 and 11 games back of the Reds. |
July 26th, 1991
The Phillies are in town for three games. They are pitching Orel Hershiser (8-11, 3.26). The Giants have Frank Viola (8-7, 3.52). I have gone 14 for 68, or .206, against Hershiser. I am hitting sixth. That is better, I suppose. Now to prove it is earned. I took care of a Bernard Gilkey grounder for the 1st out in the 2nd. I came up in the bottom of the 2nd with one out and Alvin Davis on 2nd. I flew out to Gilkey in left. I handled a Bo Jackson grounder fielder's choice ball for the 2nd out in the 3rd, but Randy Milligan scored on the play. Phillies lead 1-0 I came up in the 4th with Alvin on 2nd and Mark Lewis on 1st. I grounded one to Jose Vizcaino at 3rd. He got Mark at 2nd but Alvin was safe at 3rd and I was on with a fielder's choice. Stolen base #48. Alvin scored and I went to 3rd on a Timothy McKercher sac fly. I scored on a Ryan Klesko double. Giants lead 2-1 I next came up with one out in the 6th and I snuck one through the right side for a single. I went to 3rd on a two out single by Ryan. We were left on. I came up next with one out in the 8th, now facing Hector Fajardo. I dropped one into centre for a double. Timothy drew the intentional walk. Double steal! I was thrown out trying to score on a fielder's choice by Ryan. Bobby Thigpen took the 9th, looking to save the game for us. He gave up a two out single, but that was all and we had the game. I went 2 for 4 with a double, a single, a run scored, and two stolen bases. After the game we found out that Darryl Scott was being Designated for Assignment to make room for Don Robinson. We also found out that Robinson was taking Tom Kramer's spot in the rotation. Tom was moved to the bullpen. |
July 27th, 1991
It is time for a debut as the newest Giants is starting today. The Phillies are pitching Joe Hesketh (4-1, 2,39). The Giants have Don Robinson (4-4, 4.09). I am a perfect 1 for 1 against Hesketh. I am hitting eighth. Grr. I got the 1st out for Robinson as a Giant as I handled a John Finn grounder. Then Harold Baines led off the home side with a home run! Giants lead 1-0 I came up with two out in the 2nd and popped out to Craig Paquette at short. I caught a Joe Girardi liner for the 3rd out in the 5th. I then led off the home half by flying out to Juan Gonzalez in centre. Don gave up his first hit in the 6th. I took care of a Bo Jackson grounder and a Jose Vizcaino grounder for the 2nd and 3rd outs in the 7th. I then led off by flying out to Luis Salazar in left. Salazar then led off the 8th with a home run. It was only the 2nd hit given upon by Don, but it tied the game. I caught a Paquette pop for the 2nd out. Bobby Thigpen took over for us in the 9th. Don pitched a great game but he got the no-decision. Things did not go quite as well for Bobby as he allowed Gonzalez to score on a wild pitch. Then Tino Martinez scored on a Jackson single. Phillies lead 3-1 I came up with two out in the 9th, now facing Michael Jackson. I did my bit, driving a single to right. But that was it. I went 1 for 4 with a single. |

July 28th, 1991
We split the last couple and really want to take the series. Today the Phillies are pitching Erik Hanson (9-8, 2.88). The Giants have Bruce Ruffin (11-5, 3.38). I have gone 9 for 32, or. 281, with a home run off Hanson). I am hitting eighth. The bottom of the 1st gave us quite leg up. Robby Thompson led off with a home run. Two batters later, Ruben Sierra hit a two run homer. I came up with two out, Rick Cerone on 3rd and Ryan Klesko on 2nd and I hit a two run single. Giants lead 5-0 We widened that lead a little in the 2nd when Harold Baines scored on a Mark Lewis single. Giants lead 6-0 I came up with one out in the 3rd and hit one to the wall in left-centre for a double. I scored on a double by Bruce. Giants lead 7-0 The Phillies got not he board in the 4th when Darrin Fletcher crossed on a Dave Hollins double. Giants lead 7-1 I came up with one out in the 5th, now facing Mike Moore. Another hit - this time a line drive single to right. Stolen base #50. With two out I scored on a double by Robby. Giants lead 8-1 With two men on and one out in the 6th, Matt brought in Mike Scott. He got the next out but then walked two, forcing in a run. I took care of a Jose Vizcaino grounder to leave them loaded. Giants lead 8-4 I came up with one out in the bottom of the 7th, now facing Turk Wendell. I grounded out to Hollins at 3rd. Mark Ross took the ball for us in the 8th. July 29th, 1991
The family is in town. We have two games with the Expos and then a day off at the Trading Deadline. The front office has made a couple of additions in Rick Cerone and Don Robinson. I wonder if there is anything still to come. Today the Expos are pitching Alex Fernandez (4-14, 4.24). The Giants have John Burkett (6-11, 5.08). I have faced Fernandez once and went 1 for 3. I am hitting sixth. The Expos struck right away as a Chris Sabo doubled followed a Shane Mack double in the 1st inning. I took care of a Butch Huskey grounder to end it. Expos lead 1-0 We got it right back when Robby Thompson led off the bottom half with a home run. Game tied 1-1 Mark Lewis led off the bottom of the 2nd with aa double but then had to beheld off the field. He hurt his leg and to looks like it could be serious. Craig Grebeck pitch ran for him and then I came up and was hit by a curveball, Certainly no intent. I was erased on a Timothy McKercher fielder's choice. We were unable to score. Tim Naehring replaced Craig and took Mark's spot at 3rd. I led off the bottom of the 4th by lining out to Andres Santana at 2nd. I took care of a Fernandez grounder for the 2nd out in the 5th. Harold Baines led off the bottom of the 5th the same way Robby led off the bottom of the 1st - with a home run! Giants lead 2-1 I came up with one out in the 6th and struck out. But then Timothy and Ryan Klesko walked, setting the stage for a three-run homer by... John! Giants lead 5-1 With two out int he 7th, Sammy Sosa hit a solo homer. Still with two out and now with two on, Matt brought in Scott Service. He got the out. Giants lead 5-2 In the bottom of the 7th, Harold scored on a sac fly by Tim. I came up with one out, Ruben Sierra on 3rd, Alvin Davis on 1st, and Roger Pavlik pitching. I dumped one into right for an RBI single. Alvin went to 3rd. Stolen base #51. Timothy singled, scoring Alvin. I went to 3rd. We were left. Giants lead 8-2 Mike Scott took the ball for us in the 8th. In the bottom of the inning, Robby scored on a groundout by Alvin. I grounded out to end the inning. Giants lead 9-2 I handled a Michael Urzendowski grounder for the 2nd out in the 9th. We wrapped things up shortly after. 49-49 back to .500. I went 1 for 4 with a single, a hit-by-pitch, an RBI, and a stolen base. |
July 30th, 1991
Trying to sweep the mini-set against the Expos. Today Montreal is pitching Trevor Wilson in his first appearance this season. The Giants have Rick Sutcliffe (5-7, 4.50). WIlson did have five appearances last year but I have never faced him. I am hitting fifth! I took care of a Butch Huskey grounder for the 1st out in the 2nd. I came up with one out in the bottom of the 2nd and grounded out to Chris Sabo at 1st. I handled a Milt Cuyler grounder for the 3rd out in the 3rd. Then I took care of an Alvaro Espinoza grounder for the 1st out in the 5th. I led off the bottom of the 5th by grounding out to Espinoza at short. That inning, though, Tim Naehring launched a solo home run! Giants lead 1-0 I took care of a Billy Hatcher grounder for the 2nd out in the 6th. We ended the top of the 7th by turning a Thompson - Priske - Davis double play to get Shane Mack and pinch hitter Jose Oquendo. I came up in the bottom of the 7th with Alvin Davis on 1st. I hit into a fielder's choice, replacing him on base. I was then thrown out trying to steal 2nd. The Expos pulled even in the 8th when Russ McGinnis homered. Game tied 1-1 Bobby Thigpen took the ball for us in the 9th. I led off the bottom of the 10th, now facing Tom Henke. I flew out to Cuyler in centre. Tom Kramer relieved for us in the 11th. I got the 2nd out behind him off a Mack grounder. The Expos broke the tie in the 12th with a Jose Offerman home run. Expos lead 2-1 I came up with two out and Alvin on 1st. Mike Henneman was pitching. I swung at the first pitch and grounded out to Andres Santana at 2nd. We lost and I went 0 for 5. After the game we found out that Alan Cockrell was being activated off the IL, but was sent to Phoenix. Now we have a travel el day where we will be watching the news to see if anybody else is heading somewhere else. ```````````````` The trade deadline came and went without us making a another deal, BUT we got word that Mark Lewis has torn his hamstring and will be out for 2-3 months. He was put on the 60-day and Fran Mullins was brought in. |
August 1st, 1991
Starting August at 49-50. For me personally, July was my worst month of the season. I hit only .230 for the month when my season average is .283. We are in Cincinnati to start a four game set. Today the Reds are pitching Kirk McCaskill (5-7, 5.83). The Giants have Frank Viola (9-7, 3.40). McCaskill just came to the Reds at the deadline from the Angels, so I have never faced him. I am hitting sixth. To say we got off to a good start would be an understatement. In the top of the 1st, Robby Thompson scored on a single by Harold Baines (with a little help from a throwing error by Eric Davis) . Harold scored on a single by Alvin Davis. Ruben Sierra scored on a wild pitch (with me at the plate). I subsequently flied out. Alvin and Rick scored on a single by Craig Grebeck. Giants lead 5-0 In the bottom of the inning, Carlos Baerga scored on a Dave Staton groundout. Giants lead 5-1 In the 2nd, Robby scored on a single by Ruben. Giants lead 6-1 I came up with one out in the 3rd and snuck one up the middle for a single. Stolen base #52. Ryan Klesko reached on an error by Mark McGwire. We both scored on a double by Frank! Frank scored on a single by Robby with help from another throwing error by Davis. Giants lead 9-1 In the bottom of the 3rd, McGwire hit a solo homer. He hits lots of those. Giants lead 9-2 I led off the 5th, now facing Joe Turek. I grounded out to Baerga at 2nd. After that, though, Craig scored on a single by Frank. Then Frank scored on a single by Harold. Giants lead 11-2 In the bottom of the 5th, McGwire went deep again - this time a two run shot. I finally made a defensive play, handling an Eric Davis grounder for the 2nd out. Giants lead 11-4 I came up with two out in the 6th and grounded out to Baerga again. I took care of a Mike Mordecai grounder for the 1st out in the bottom of the 6th. In the 7th Craig hit a solo homer. Giants lead 12-4 I handled a McGwire grounder for the final out in the 7th. Bryan Hickerson took the ball for us in the 8th. I grounded into a double play. Mike Scott took the mound for us in the 9th. He only needed eight pitches to end the game. We were back to .500 I went 1 for 5 with a single, a run scored, and a stolen base. |

We got a big win yesterday. Let's keep it going. Today the Reds are pitching Jack Armstrong (9-5, 3.07). The Giants have Bruce Ruffin (11-5, 3.38). I have gone 5 for 25 against Armstrong. I am hitting sixth. I took care of a Carlos Baerga grounder for the 1st out in the bottom of the 1st. I came up with two out in the 2nd and struck out. Dave Staton led off the bottom of the inning with a home run. Reds lead 1-0 I handled an Armstrong grounder for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 3rd. Then I got Baerga again for the 3rd out. In the 4th Alvin Davis and Rick Cerone hit back to back doubles to tie the game. Then I came up with one out and Rick on 2nd. I walked. I was erased on a fielder's choice by Ryan Klesko. Game tied 1-1 I caught a Kal Daniels pop for the 2nd out in the bottom half. But then Staton scored on a Tom Brunansky single. Reds lead 2-1 I got Daniels on a grounder for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 5th. Unfortunately, Baerga scored on the play. Then Mark McGwire scored on a Staton single. Reds lead 4-1 I came up in the 6th with one out, Alvin on 2nd, and Rick on 1st. On the first pitch both runners moved up on a wild one. I hit it into the right field corner for a two run double! Ryan walked. I stole 3rd. We were left on. Reds lead 4-3 Scott Service took the ball for us in the bottom of the 6th. I took care of a Brunansky grounder for the 1st out behind him. Mike Mordecai and pinch hitter Shawn Twillie scored on a Baerga double. Reds lead 6-3 In the top of the 7th, Ruben Sierra scored on a single by Alvin. Reds lead 6-4 I led off the 8th, now facing Larry Andersen. I walked. I went to 2nd on a ground out by pinch hitter Bryce Bernadin. I scored on a Craig Greenback single. Reds lead 6-5 Tom Kramer relieved for us in the bottom of the 8th. We were unable to get the last run back and lost. I went 1 for 2 with a double, two walks, two RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. |

We split the first two games. Today the Reds are pitching Dave Stieb (3-8, 3.43). The Giants have Don Robinson (4-4, 3.81). Stieb just came over from the AL this year so I haven't faced him. I am hitting sixth. I came up with two out in the 2nd and flew out to Kal Daniels in left. The Reds opened the scoring in the 2nd when Beau Allred scored on a sac fly by Stieb. Reds lead 1-0 In the 3rd Mark McGwire hit a solo homer. Reds lead 2-0 In the 4th Allred scored on a sac fly again - this time by Carlos Baerga. Then Mike Mordecai scored on a Brian Harper single. Reds lead 4-0 I came up with one out in the 5th and hit one up the middle for a single. I moved to 2nd on a groundout by Ryan Klesko, but was left there. I took care of an Allred grounder for the final out in the 5th. In the 6th, Mordecai scored on a Baerga single. Reds lead 5-0 I led off the 8th by flying out to Allred in centre. With one out in the 8th, Matt brought in Mike Scott. I caught a Baerga pop for the 2nd out. Then I dealt with a Harper grounder for the 3rd. We were shut out. I went 1 for 3 with a single. |

It is the final game of a four game set against the Reds and we need to win just to break even. The Reds are pitching Mike Bielecki (5-3, 3.03). The Giants are going with John Burkett (7-11, 4.95). I have done well against Bielecki, going 9 for 30, or .300. I am hitting sixth. I came up in the 2nd with Rick Cerone on 1st. I flew out to Beau Allred in centre. I took care of a Carlos Baerga grounder for the 1st out in the bottom of the 3rd. I came up in the 4th with one out and Alvin Davis on 2nd. I grounded out back to the pitcher. I caught an Allred pop for the 1st out in the bottom half. We turned a Thompson - Priske - Davis double play to get Tom Brunansky and Mike Mordecai to end the inning. Tim Naehring led off the 5th with a home run. Giants lead 1-0 I handled another Baerga grounder Der for the 2nd out in the bottom of the 5th. I led off the 7th by flying out to Allred again. I then took care of a pinch hit grounder by Mariano Duncan to end the inning. Baerga led off the bottom of the 8th with homer, tying the game. I got the 1st out after that, off a Brian Harper grounder. With one out, Tom Kramer took the ball for us. Game tied 1-1 I came up in the 9th with John Franco pitching and Rick on 1st. I struck out. The guys took care of things after that, though, as Rick scored on a Ryan Klesko double and Ryan scored on a Craig Grebeck pick hit single. Giants lead 3-1 Bobby Thigpen came it to close things out. He walked one but that was it and we had the win. I went 0 for 4. Now we head to Atlanta. Ugh. |

We are in Atlanta, my least favourite place to play in the league. The Braves are pitching Tom Glavine (7-11, 3.08). The Giants have Rick Sutcliffe (5-7, 4.28). I have gone 18 for 63, or .286, with a home run against Glavine. I am hitting sixth. I came up in the 2nd with Alvin Davis on 1st. I hit one down the left field line for a double, moving Alvin to 3rd. Alvin scored and I went to 3rd on a one out single by Ryan Klesko. Rick bunted Ryan over to 2nd but we were then both stranded. Giants lead 1-0 The bottom of the 2nd saw a single, an error on Robby Thompson, a walk, and a grand slam by Terry Kennedy. Braves lead 4-1 I led off the 4th by dumping a single into left. Stolen base #54. With one out I went to 3rd on a groundout by Ryan. I was left on again. I caught a Jerome Walton pop to end the inning. In the 5th, Gary Sheffield scored on a Ron Gant double. Mike Scott took the ball for us after that. Braves lead 5-1 I came up with one out in the 6th and singled again, this time to right. That was my 100th hit of the season. Followed by my 55th stolen base. Alas, I was stranded for the third time. Bryce Bernadin led off the 7th with a pinch hit home run. Braves lead 5-2 Scott Service took the mound after that. I came up next with one out in the 8th and grounded out to Sheffield at 3rd. After the Braves loaded the bases with none out in the bottom of the 8th, Matt brought in Bryan Hickerson. Jim Thome welcomed him with a grand slam. Braves lead 9-2 And that is how it ended. Brutal. I went 3 for 4 with a double, two singles, and two stolen bases... but no runs scored. |
