Like his better known father, Bill Jr. was a pitcher. Junior appeared in the 1959 Cleveland Indians' spring camp as a non-roster invitee.
This photo (apologies for its quality, but I couldn't find any other for him) is from the Greensboro (NC) Record of August 8, 1956. It shows him with the Winston-Salem Twins. http://www.baseball-reference.com/re...d=dietri002wil |

Sometimes it pays to be a catcher. Though you won't find Ron Witucki in the annals of regular major leaguers, he made it close many times. He was a non-roster invitee with the Detroit Tigers four times -- in 1955, 1956, 1959, and 1960 -- helping to meet the need for extra catchers to be around for spring training. He was also the Tigers' bullpen catcher during the 1962 regular season.
Unfortunately, Ron died last year on September 7th. The photo on the left is from the Arkansas Democrat of March 27, 1955. It shows him in a Detroit Tigers uniform during spring training. He was receiving instruction from HOFer Rick Ferrell. The photo on the right is from the Arkansas Gazette of April 10, 1954. It shows him with the Little Rock Travelers.
