What do you think of Bannister? Is there anything that you would correct?

Thanks,

Alan Bannister

This is a good image. These yearbook style photos never turn out perfectly. I downloaded your picture and did just a couple tweaks. I made the Phillies 'P' a little whiter (I cut and pasted the 'P' from the black and white image into your artwork) and colored the eyes blue after looking at a real color image of Alan Bannister. The eyes are usually the hardest thing to get right for me, they always turn out sort of unnatural. You did a particularly nice job on the pinstripes and the background.

Thanks for the help! As far as the eyes, how do you know what color they are?

Here's a pretty clear view.

It's impossible to tell from a black and white pic. If possible I use another photo as reference, in fact I used that self-same image of Alan Bannister TNFOTO posted directly above. If no reference is available you just have to presume or infer. Accurate is best but sometimes there just is no way to know.

Need Help with these.

I need some help with these. I tried the Joe Hague, but it seemed kinda light. If you don't think that they will work don't worry about it. Could you email me specific instructions of how you did Roger Metzger so I can try it myself?

Thanks,

BRobby05

Roger Metzger 1974

Roger Metzger with the 1974 Astros. These last images you are working with are going to be tough to do a great color-job. Images that are too light or too dark will be the bane of your existence when colorizing. I haven't tried the Joe Hague image that you are struggling with, but all of those images are very light. I will experiment a little to see what, if anything, can be done. The Metzger image you posted is grainy as you know. I haven't found a lot of options to repair or "fix" this issue. About the only technique I have had any luck with is the "gaussian blur" which can be found in GIMP's "filters" tab then go to blur, then gaussian blur. I did this selectively after coloring the face, the hat, and then the uniform. the H logo was last (after cutting and pasting a black and white version of the logo onto the hat) and the darkened the black areas. It looks very.... weird when it is large sized, but not so bad at smaller versions. You might also try the "soft glow" option which can also be found in the filters list under "artistic". Soft glow can be faded by an option in the edit menu.

I am sorry to say that I have not had any luck with these images either. I experimented a lot with the Joe Hague image and wasn't able to improve much on the base image. The thing I was thinking about with these Reds images is that there isn't a lot of variety in the seventies Reds uniforms. I know you have pretty specific requirements for the images you want to use, but perhaps you might consider some alternatives. These Reds baseball cards have pretty accurate Reds uniforms for Joe Hague and Tom Hall.

Angel Hermoso, 74 Indians

1 Attachment(s)
Here is Angel Hermoso of the 74 Indians. There were 2 pics...the other one is more of a portrait like the Phils that I want to tackle. Could you tackle this one and email me a detailed "play-by-play" so I can do the other one. Again, I need a detailed explanation emailed to me so that I can understand the precedure. I have some 1971 A's ones that I want to tackle. There's a 1972 Indians yearbook that I want to get but they also have b & W pics for me to work on. You don't see many of the 72 Indians since they only wore that uniform 1 year like the 72 Twins.

Thanks in advance!
