Story

The Tourists responded at their home stadium by winning the second and deciding game of the Cola Cup, 4-0. Orange's 35-year-old pitcher Mike Ratliff pitched a complete-game three-hitter, striking out three. The Tourists' biggest boost came on a three-run 3rd inning. After Ratliff walked to begin the innings, Jake Beech tripled him in for a 2-0 lead. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Cherry pitcher Justin Hodges threw a wild pitch to score Beech and move Mike Pattison to 2nd. After a ground out moved Pattison to 3rd, Josh Parr hit an RBI groundout to score the final run of the game. Justin Hodges suffered the loss for the Ghoulrillas, allowing four earned runs on two hits with three walks and three strikeouts. He threw one wild pitch and hit a batter.

28 March 2299 - Diamond City Swatters Ship Curatolo to Lexington

In a hastily called press conference, Diamond City announced today a trade with Lexington that will send 20-year-old 1B Jeffrey Curatolo, 21-year-old LHP Justin Chryslus, 19-year-old minor league 2B Otto Krappe and 19-year-old minor league C Engle Abyss to the Synths in exchange for 25-year-old 1B Crater Landlubber and 21-year-old LF Tyler Ross. All players are expected to be in their respective new cities in time for today's games.

Curatolo played in 108 games in 2298 with a .279 batting average and 122 hits. He also scored 60 runs and drove in 80 runs with 20 home runs. He should immediately improve the 1B position in Lexington.

In 108 games Ross hit .296 with 131 hits, 23 home runs, 59 RBIs, and 67 runs. He is expected to improve the starting LF position for DC.

Landlubber appeared in 63 games in 2298, batting .310 with three home runs, and 12 RBI.

Speculation was that Diamond City was ready for rookie Oren Gep to take over at 1B and wanted to improve some other positions to get Gep on the field. The 1st overall pick in the 2297 Rookie Draft, Gep batted .271 with 23 home runs and 69 RBI while scoring 59 runs with Naticks Banks in 2297. He has shown good bat control and the ability to drive the ball. Big Leaguers hitting coach Tony Strickland has called Gep "the best bat in the BMU."

Krappe and Abyss were both recently taken by the Swatters in the 2298 Rookie Draft. Krappe was the 14th overall pick. His glove and speed will help him one day become a decent defensive shortstop in the CBO. He has the ability to hit for power, but he needs to work more on making contact with the ball rather than trying to knock its cover off.

28 March 2299 - CBO Begins Final Week of Preseason

The gates will soon be lifted and Commonwealth Baseball Organization Spring training facilities will be in business once again. At this time of year, the grass is always greener. Optimism abounds. And everyone is thankful to be back playing baseball. Opening Day is not far off.

The CBO will begin five day's worth of Spring Training games today to prepare teams before the season begins. Teams track the stats of these games to give them an idea of which players may need to start in the CBO and which teams are ready for the BMU.

Good luck to all the players in 2299. Last year was great, but we here at Publick Occurrences look forward to an even better 2299 season.

29 March 2299 - Salem Activates Catman

The Salem Witch Hats announced today that 1B Dan Catman would be activated after suffering as what was diagnosed as Cat Scratch Fever. The injury was sustained by one of his cats. Catman has been cleared to play and should no longer suffer ill effects of the disease.

31 March 2299 - Corvega's Stamey Injured by Radscorpion

Corvega Flamers (Sunshine Tidings) 1B Tom Stamey was injured by a radscorpion just north of Jalbert Brothers Disposal last night.

Following a team practice with the Flamers, Stamey and some teammates went for a swim in the Cambridge Reservoir, swimming the width of the waterway on a wager.

After crossing the reservoir, a nearby radscorpion attacked the group. No one had a weapon at the time, so the cut and stung group had to escape via the reservoir.

Stamey suffered the most severe of injuries with a laceration to his hand that may force him to miss some time from the start of the BMU season on April 11. No one else had any other injuries in the dangerous encounter.

31 March 2299 - Salem-Finch Farm Trade

The Salem Witch Hats traded 21-year-old minor league reliever Malden Roberts and 20-year-old minor league second baseman Kidd Hinojosa to the Finch Farm Four Leafs, getting 20-year-old minor league starting pitcher Jamie Brenner in return.

Hinojosa was the 3rd round pick and Roberts was the 5th round pick of the Witch Hats in the 2297 Rookie Draft.

Brenner was a free agent acquisition in 2298 by the Four Leafs. He played mostly with Galleria in the BMU but did start one game for Finch Farm. In that game, he allowed three earned runs on nine hits with a walk and five strikeouts in 7.0 innings in the win.

2 April 2299 - Exhibition Season Standouts

Here are a few players that stood out. Apologies that stats only were calculated during the official Spring Training Week, not the entire exhibition schedule, which included exhibition games vs the NWL and the Battle Tournaments.

Diamond City's rookie 1B Oren Gep had perhaps the biggest standout performance this week in preparation to being the Swatters' starter in 2299. The young Gep batted .526 with a CBO-leading 13 RBI to go along with two home runs.

2299 - CBO Preseason Predictions

1 Attachment(s)
Now that Spring Training is complete, teams can turn their attention to the regular season, a 98-game affair from April through early-September.

For the 2298 season, P.A.M., or the Predictive Analytic Machine, has returned to offer her deep dive into the world of Commonwealth baseball.

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1588040782

P.A.M. is a master of predictive analysis. Running the numbers, here is what P.A.M. had to say about the 2298 season.

"I was, am, and will most likely be P.A.M. Predictive Analytic Machine. All systems fully functional. Baseball token recognized. I provide first order approximations of the behaviors of all residents of the region designated Commonwealth. Rephrasing. I predict the future.

Rephrasing. I also provide first order approximations of the results of baseball of the league designated CBO. Commonwealth Baseball Organization. Nate Howard has reprogrammed this unit's new primary goal. He calls it the B.P.M. Baseball Prediction Model.

Processes reaching maximum capacity. Output only. User must fill in own conclusions. Data sustained. Accuracy is expected to reach better than 80%. Results printed. Recharge in progress. End transmission."

Predictions

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...1&d=1611459594

Analysis

The North Charles Association is expected to be tight with PAM placing defending NCA champion Easy Town, Abernathy, and Starlight at the same 64-44 prediction, with 2298 BL champions, the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys, picked to finish one game back. PAM has three of the same four teams in the playoffs with the Lady Killers replacing Fort Hagen as the IL wildcard and the BL champions and wildcard swapping spots. County Crossing and Finch Farm are tied for the prediction for the CBO's worst record.

Despite his team not expected to make the playoffs, Concord's Dan Erb is PAM's pick for the top hitter in the league, with six outfielders expected to battle for the award. Last year's winner, Jarrett Metalbox of Easy Town, is expected to finish sixth with a better than 40-point difference in his batting average last season. Metalbox's teammate, CF Sean Samuels, is expected to earn the top average. The Party Boys' 1B Dustin Mart is expected to win the home run crown.

At pitcher, Abernathy's Brad Westing is predicted to win a whopping 22 games and win the ERA crown. Nordhagen Beach's Tommy Beach is predicted to finish second, as well as strike out more batters than anyone else in the NCA.

In the SCA, the defending CBO champions Goodneighbor Hancocks look to repeat as the best team in the CBO. Like the NCA, PAM predicts three of the same teams to be in the playoffs in 2299 with Jamaica Plain replacing Warwick as the ML wildcard and a surprise prediction of Diamond City to win the RL over Oberland. The Red Rockets would show the biggest improvement to earn the CBO's second-best record after their league rivals. Like last season, Atom and Roxbury are expected to be in the running for the CBO's top draft pick.

One reason why the Rockets are expected to rise has to do with PAM's prediction that RF David Seaweed will win the top hitter award, including the expectation that he will have the top average in the SCA. The Swatters' RF Wayne Lacy is expected to win the home run crown. Last year's top hitter, the Hancocks' Bryan Assman, is picked to finish third. The 2296 CBO MVP, Egret RF Paladin Danse, is picked to finish second behind Seaweed.

PAM picks Jamaica Plain to make the MVP sweep with pitcher Chris Teddybear chosen as the preseason favorite to win the pitcher award. Teddybear and Diamond City's X10-44 Mannson each expected to tie with 20 wins. Teddybear is expected to have the most strikeouts, while Mannson is expected to have the SCA's best ERA. Last year's winner, the Swatters' Tim Fusion, is not predicted in PAM's top ten.

I suppose it was a quiet and slightly disappointing pre-season for the Party Boys. As I have said previously, I think there's enough talent on the roster now to ensure a decent season this year - i.e. making the play-offs. The hitting lineup still looks strong, but I wish they could beef up the pitching somewhat [but that has always been the case.] The problems come down the line, when the fact that drafting has been so poor will come back to haunt them, unless they can pull off some great trades - which, to be fair, they have done at times up to this point.
Even in my own games, I'm always glad when pre-season is over and I can get on to games that "mean something", so I'm really looking forward to another excellent season of CBO baseball.

They most certainly have a currently good team and should compete again for a title, or, at least an NCA title. After a few trades to get better, the cupboards are bare at the moment for further improving their squad. I am attaching the position rankings of all teams here. I hope I captured them all! You can see that the Party Boys currently are pretty good at most positions, but they are 21st at shortstop and 20th at closer. They are also in the top 5 at four positions, including starting pitching. Therefore, they are likely to win a lot of games, even if the league overall is evened out more. I love that no team is predicted to win 70 or more games, and I would love if 60-something wins is the standard for good teams and 60-something losses is the standard for bad teams.

4 April 2299 - CBO News: Opening Day

4 April 2299 - Howard Introduces CBO History Policies

CBO Commissioner Nate Howard announced today that the "official" start to the CBO and BMU will be considered 2298 when the four faction leagues merged into one league.

According to Howard, "We programmed our BNN system to count the statistics, records, etc. on a league designation. Therefore, for the sake of not having to hack our programming, we will consider only the beginning of the 2298 season for generating statistics, league records, service time, and any other factors that must be considered for the official CBO's start."

Statistics from 2296 and 2297 will still be kept on player cards, but those are separate statistics since the leagues were their own unique entities except for the postseason. CBO-based stats will be counted as the official stats, while the BL/IL/ML/RL stats will be considered for heavy lifting in overall career accomplishments.

(StLee's Note: If I had to do it all again, the leagues would have been merged from the start! Anyway, I am annoyed every time that there is a trade that I have to completely edit the story to reflect "2298" versus "career," so this story solves that BNN-generated story problem.)

4 April 2299 - BNN Top 100 Prospects List Published

4 April 2299 - Arcade Owner Marketing Baseball Board Game

Colt Crackerjack, owner of Alley Arcade in Easy Town, has petitioned for an official license for a new board game in the Commonwealth: Luckball.

According to Crackerjack, the game will feature a playing board, player cards, score sheets, four dice, and an action card. Players will roll the four dice in different combinations of 1, 2, 3, or 4, indicating different actions to take.

"We have been testing the game in our board game room," Crackerjack said. "We are getting realistic results similar to the CBO scores, so we're really happy with the game. All we need is a license and we can make the CBO even more popular in the Commonwealth."

Crackerjack has invited people to Alley Arcade to try out the game. Sales are dependent on the licensing contract so that real CBO teams and player cards can be used.

"Right now we have fake teams and players," Crackerjack said. "So, for instance, in our sample games we have the Queasy City Sharebeths against the Badfamily Manrocks. The Sharebeths have a star player, Jared Plasticplate."

The Assaultrons are on the road during the week but return home this Sunday and Monday. Crackerjack said that he would set up a few demo tables outside Easy Town Field to show off the game.

The Commonwealth has a limited number of boardgames. Many people own two of the more popular pre-War games, including Checkers/Chess and Blast Radius. While they are not easy to find, some people own a few of the Don't Be Bored Company's other board games: Autopsy, Catch the Commie, Rad Poker, The Legendary Run, and Unstoppable Shindig!

4 April 2299 - Adamantium Westing Tames Easy Town

Brad Westing kept the opposition off the scoreboard and the Abernathy Adamantium were all smiles after winning 3-0 against the Easy Town Assaultrons at Tato Field today. The left-handed Westing gave up no runs in his start, permitted 6 hits and had 13 strikeouts.

"If there was a stat for 'team shutout,' this would be it," Westing said later. "My catcher called a great game, guys delivered at the plate and when I messed something up the guys behind me were where they needed to be."

4 April 2299 - Nordhagen Beach Decked by Nuka, Silver Shroud

The Fort Hagen Silver Shroud began the 2299 season with a convincing 9-3 win over the Nordhagen Beach Party Boys at Hubris Comics Park. Most impressive was Fort Hagen left fielder Andrew Nuka, who went 4 for 5 with 2 home runs and 2 singles, while adding 6 RBI and scoring twice.

With Fort Hagen leading 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, Nuka hit a changeup from Tommy Beach (0-1) for a 3-run home run. It was his 1st home run of the season and put the Silver Shroud ahead, 5-0. He added his second in the 8th off Mike Waterdrinker.

"I'm not out there for personal accomplishments," Nuka told a Fort Hagen Gazette reporter after the game. "I'm out there to help the team win, and that's what we did today."

Brent Hooker (1-0) earned the win, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with four walks and seven strikeouts in 8.0 innings.

Nordhagen Beach was held to one extra-base hit on the day, a 9th-inning RBI double by Mike Swift. Dustin mart singled twice.

4 April 2299 - Rome, FHE Prevail in Pitchers' Duel

The FHE Yao Guai satisfied the home crowd at BosCom Circle, treating them to a season-opening win, 2-0, over the Quincy Gunners. Starting Pitcher Bow Rome was the standout performer for FHE.

Rome, the FHE right-hander, went 8.2 innings, allowing no runs on 4 hits. He collected 9 strikeouts.

"I made some pitches when I had to," said Rome.

4 April 2299 - Swatters Deal Hancocks 3-1 Loss in 11 Innings

Opening day festivities have begun throughout the league. Fans of the Diamond City Swatters were eager to watch X10-44 Mannson square off against Quincy Eloquent of the visiting CBO champions, the Goodneighbor Hancocks. In the end, the Swatters won the game, 3-1, in 11 innings with X10-44 Mannson leading the way. Diamond City reliever Mark Stuhlsatz picked up the win, raising his record to 1-0. Bus Paula was tagged with the loss.

Diamond City won the game in the bottom of the 11th inning. With one out and Bus Paula on the mound for Goodneighbor, right fielder Wayne Lacy hit a dramatic 2-run home run, bringing Swatters fans to their feet.

"It was a tough night at the plate," said Goodneighbor manager Jeremy Whiteplate. "It was also a tough way to drop our first game of the season."

5 April 2299 - CBO-NWL Has First Cross-League Trade: Sunshine Tidings-Quartz

It's all done except the paperwork. The Sunshine Tidings Chemists and the Quartz Star Force have agreed to a trade that will send 27-year-old minor league C Kyle Hodges to Quartz, while 30-year-old 2B Colin Staunton and 24-year-old SS Chris Perez will be shipped to Sunshine Tidings. A top front office executive with the Chemists described the trade talks as "quick and easy. . . . We're glad to get this deal done. We think it's something that helps our ball club and it didn't take too long at all to sort this one out," he said.

5 April 2299 - Easy Town Shut Out Again

Bad Company Grognak of the Abernathy Adamantium mixed his pitches well and fashioned a 7-0 shutout today. The 33-year-old hurler shut down the Easy Town offense, holding them to 4 hits. He struck out 8 while walking 1.

"This was brahmin**** offense to start the season," Assaultrons manager Graham Route said. "You win the association, you expect to come out and beat other good teams. Getting shut out two times in a row is unacceptable. Our guys had better go out and score 10 each game at Concord, or they're swimming sewers home."

5 April 2299 - Hancocks Blanked by Fusion, 6-0

Sometimes even Tim Fusion of the Diamond City Swatters isn't sure which pitcher will show up when he takes the mound.

"I've been good sometimes and bad sometimes," he said.

He looked good this time and made the Goodneighbor Hancocks look bad, blanking them by the score of 6-0. Fusion tossed a 1-hit shutout, totaling 7 strikeouts and giving up no walks. He had a no-hitter heading into the 9th inning before Hancocks' catcher Stephen Brewster hit a one-out single.

The 2298 SCA Pitcher of the Year was predicted to regress in 2299. However, a one-hitter is about as best as can be expected by someone "regressing."

"If Tim pitches half as good as this all season, we'll win a lot of games," Diamond City manager Bucky Bachelor said.

In 20 innings to open the season, the usually explosive Goodneighbor offense was held to one run and eight hits.

"It's not often we get shut down this bad," Hancocks manager Jeremy Whiteplate said. "Tomorrow is another day, and we'll go out and swing the bat like it's a regular Thursday."
